My Best List Bling on a Budget Who doesn’t love this? These Austrian crystal earrings add great sparkle and come in a variety of colors. I like them for two reasons: they fit flat against your pierced ear (no heavy setting that makes them pull away from the ear) so they look great and they cost $6.99 a pair so when you lose one, which happens…no stress involved. They come in a variety of colors, too! Find them at the check-out at Sally’s Beauty Supply. Details: 4920 Roswell Road Ste. 18, Atlanta, GA 30342, (404) 256-6374, www.sallybeauty.com Running/Walking Shorts I am very picky about my running shorts. Not so much how they look, but how they feel. These Nike dry-fit, mesh shorts are light-weight, super cool (temperature) and extremely comfortable. They do not have built-in underwear (I don’t like that feature in shorts). They are practical, comfortable, affordable and come in lots of fun colors. And they must look pretty cool because my 18-year-old daughter is constantly stealing them from me. Details: $19.99 at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Stock #375833 Annie’s Thai Castle Owned by a wonderful woman, mother and entrepreneur, Annie offers up fresh, delicious, healthy Thai cuisine. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I especially enjoy the number 12 mixed veggies with rice, chicken larb and beef salad. Also, the coconut soup is “therapy in a bowl,” especially on a cold, rainy day. Details: 3195 Roswell Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30305, (404) 264-9546. Open Tuesday - Sunday. Cami Top These camis are a must-have staple to your wardrobe. They are so versatile and work with almost any outfit. They come in basic colors, provide gentle support and are extra long so they don’t ride up. Details: $18, Available at Fab’rik at Shops Around Lenox, www.shopfabrikboutique.com

Rave Reviews for the Atlanta Center For Cosmetic Dentistry “I could have gone anywhere in Beverly Hills or Manhattan to get a gorgeous smile. But there’s no other dental office in the world like this.” —Toni Braxton, Grammy Winning Musician, Actress & Mother “Debra Gray King is used to TV cameras inside her Atlanta dental office. In fact, when ABC’s Extreme Makeover wanted the best female cosmetic dentist in the country, they called her.” —WSB TV “Most vacations aren’t this good.” —Time Magazine “I’m still waiting for a guy to treat me that good.” —The Wall Street Journal Dr. King’s work can be seen on many famous faces as well as the show Extreme Makeover.” —CNN “Pampering...a feel-good experience.” —CBS Morning Show “It’s like a first-class flight to Paris.” —USA Today “My New Bling...A Knock-Out Smile. “ —Big Boi of Outkast

Bella Italia Restaurant This restaurant has been a favorite of mine and a group of girlfriends since last summer. from the editor What I Know For Sure As a 10-year-old armed only with a love of storytelling and a spiralbound notebook, I penned many stories in hopes they would one day find their way to the shelves of bookstores across the city. Although I haven’t had my stories published (yet!) there is still the dream. And I still believe it will happen one day. If there is one thing we’ve learned from Oprah it is that if you believe in yourself, amazing things can happen. Even though she doesn’t visit our living rooms anymore through “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she will be paying a visit to Atlanta on October 15 at the O You! event, which may help you find that inspiration you are looking for. Here at Best Self, we strive to help people find and follow their passions because you never know where it could lead you. Whether it’s supporting an important cause like breast cancer (p. 49) or ovarian cancer (p. 30) or realizing your dream of running your own business like Carey Carter owner of Carter Barnes Hair Artisans (p. 82), the sky is the limit when you believe in yourself. Happy reading!

Explore new ways to get more out of life Blooming Good Fun By Jeyme Colodne While I enjoy the cooler weather of fall, I do occasionally get wistful for the lazy days of summer and seeing all the gorgeous flowers in bloom. This yearning and my love of crafting, led me to find Paper Flowers 101 at The Beehive, a class that teaches the fine art of making beautiful flowers using colorful paper and a pair of sharp scissors. Although this may seem easy, don’t let those innocent petals fool you – there’s plenty of gluing, tracing and wire cutting involved as well. Taught by former elementary school teacher, artist and crafter Angie Traunig, Paper Flowers 101 is a fun and relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. There is something so satisfying about creating these colorful buds, cutting through the sturdy card stock paper to make leaves, and wrapping the petals together to make a unique bouquet. After leaving this one-day class, I not only had a greater appreciation for how these flowers are created but also a strong desire to head to the nearest Hobby Lobby and stock up on whimsical paper to make my own floral creations at home. Angie is a patient teacher and doesn’t fuss over any imperfections; she’s encouraging and a lot of fun to work with. For brides or partyplanners who are looking for lasting floral arrangements, Angie also does bigger bouquets for special occasions (visit her Ferntree Studio for more information www.ferntreestudio.com). Paper Flowers 101 is available on Fridays and Sundays at The Beehive and all materials are included in the cost of the class. $45

Summer Daze

Dinner and a Movie

If you’re hankering for just one more day of summer fun, then the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, FL may be your ticket. Whether you come to play or just relax, this Florida resort has something for everyone to enjoy. Complete with seven miles of beaches, four championship golf courses, 15 tennis courts, 19 swimming pools, a 98-slip marina, a fitness center, and spa this is definitely the place to relax and get away from it all. After spending some time soaking up the rays, hit The Village of Baytowne Wharf, a pedestrian village with shops, restaurants and plenty of nightlife entertainment. Hang out the weekend of October 21-23 and check out Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival or head down on October 29 and take the family to Trick or Treat Street at Baytowne.

Looking more like a cozy yet sophisticated lounge than a movie theater, the newly opened CinéBistro in Brookhaven offers more than just your typical movie-going experience. With amenities like stadium-style seating on comfortable over-sized leather seats and full-service in-theater dining, this theater has it all and the popcorn too! Even if you’re not there to see a movie, the full bar is open to 21 and over guests who just want to have a glass of wine or a signature cocktail. Enjoy a bite to eat on the outdoor patio overlooking Town Brookhaven before or after catching a movie. Executive Chef Isaac Stewart’s menu doesn’t include your average hot dogs and nachos, but instead a selection of sandwiches, salads, desserts and more.

Q

At what age is it recommended to have a bone density screening performed?

Current guidelines recommend a bone mineral density assessment in all women over the age of 65, or women under 65 with risk factors for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis risk factors include: advancing age, parental history of hip fracture, personal fracture history, cigarette smoking, low body weight, excessive alcohol intake, glucocorticoid therapy, or “secondary” risk factors (health conditions such as early menopause). The guidelines for men are less clear. In the absence of firm evidence, male Juliet K. Mavromatis, MD, FACP screening should be considered in elderly men with the aforementioned clinical risk factors. Personalized Primary Care Atlanta

Q

As I get older, I notice I am gaining weight however my exercise and eating habits haven’t changed. What is going on with me?

It only takes eating an extra 100 calories a day for you to gain five pounds a year. Just consider a few of the many variables that promote weight gain. Here are a few: hormonal changes, medications, stress (both physical and emotional can alter cortisol levels), insulin levels and brain chemicals (neurotransmitters), food addictions to chocolate, cheese, sugar and wheat can all promote the release of opiates and drive appetite and habits like skipping breakfast and not drinking enough water. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces each day. Try to figure out which one of these variables applies to you and that will help you solve your weight gain puzzle so you can lose pounds and keep them off.

At what age should my child have their first eye exam?

The InfantSee program allows for your baby to have their first exam at six to12 months. Once it is determined that there are no glaring risk factors for blindness later on in life, their next exam should be by age three. Then age five or six (before kindergarten). Your eye care professional will recommend follow up intervals, usually, every one or two years for school-aged children. Keep in mind these are comprehensive exam recommendations done by eye care professionals, not school or other vision screenings.

Takeia Locke, OD Family Eye Care Center of Atlanta

I’ve been experiencing unexplained abdominal pain lately. Is it time for a colonoscopy?

Abdominal pain can be related to a variety of causes. The discomfort may not necessarily be related to your colon but may be associated with your gallbladder, pancreas, or even your abdominal wall. Pain associated with a change in bowel habits, blood in the stool, and/or weight loss may warrant a colonoscopy. However, it is best to discuss your symptoms with your doctor so he or she can determine the best approach to diagnose your problem. A routine colonoscopy is recommended beginning at age 50 for non-African Americans and 45 for African-Americans. If there is a significant family history of colorectal cancer, earlier colonoscopy may be warranted.

I’m experiencing joint pain, should I go see a doctor?

It is important to know when to see your doctor if you are suffering with joint pain. Any joint pain that is severe or lasts longer than three days should be evaluated by a medical professional. Other warning signs of a more serious condition include swelling, redness, difficulty walking, warmth in the joint area, loss of mobility, instability and recent unexplained weight loss. Ovarian Cycle: Riding for a Cure By Sarah E. King

Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly of women’s cancers with roughly 21,000 women in the U.S. diagnosed each year. Early detection of the disease increases the five-year survival rate more than 93 percent. Ovarian Cycle seeks to fund research for the development of a test for accurate diagnosis, as well as raise awareness of the disease. Its signature fundraising event, Ride to Change the Future, consists of six weeks of training at health clubs or gyms. The event culminates in a six-hour virtual ride with more than 200 participants riding and completing the final 100 virtual mile event.

“This ride allows families, friends and even women undergoing treatment to participate in something that raises awareness and impacts their lives, and those of all women. It is a positive step, a community of people with a common goal,” says Diamond. As Ride to Change the Future enters its ninth ride on April 21, 2012, Ovarian Cycle has grown into an event in five states, as well as raised more than $850,000 to support ovarian cancer research. “People are brought to this because they have been touched by ovarian cancer, or they just want to do something motivational to push them to a new level of fitness. It is all indoors, so anyone can do it,” Diamond explains. “Together we will make a difference.” For more information visit www.ovariancycle.org

Photos by Danyelle Williams, Your Star Peek Photography

The loss of a loved one is never an easy event to bear, but in 2004, one Marietta resident used her loss as motivation to empower people to make a change. Bethany Diamond, a fitness instructor and founder of the non-profit organization Ovarian Cycle, experienced the loss of her dear friend Debbie Green Flamm to ovarian cancer - a cancer that presently has no known test for accurate diagnosis. “I had little exposure to the disease prior and no understanding of it. But I learned,” Diamond says. “Debbie, a very health-conscious woman, had complaints that went unlinked from doctor to doctor and were considered unimportant. As a result, they were under-diagnosed. If her ovarian cancer had been diagnosed early, she might still be here with us today.”

Breast cancer had always been on Cathy Jones’ radar – her mom is a four-year survivor – so annual mammograms were a must. In April 2010, after an abnormal mammogram, a biopsy revealed cancer. During the journey from imaging and surgery through radiation, the WellStar Cancer Network was there for her. The WellStar Cancer Network provides advanced, multidisciplinary care including prevention, education, early detection, treatment and survivorship support. Each year, over 3,000 cancer patients benefit from WellStar’s compassionate, individualized care. WellStar also offers seven digital mammography locations, including one of the largest and most advanced women’s imaging locations in the country at the newly opened Kennestone Outpatient Pavilion. In addition, our breast nurse navigator provides one-on-one guidance and support to patients going through treatment. Assessing your health and getting the facts By Melody Jacone

o matter what your age, having a clean bill of health is one of the most important things you can attain. WOMEN’S Health Directory Assessing your health on a yearly, monthly and sometimes weekly basis is essential to help you live a long and healthy life. Don’t assume that a simple yearly check-up is enough. Some screenings may require more attention than others, and your current health status, age, genetic issues and diet can make a big impact on whether or not you pass your screenings with flying colors. “Women today have multidimensional and demanding lives,” says Kenneth Brigham, MD, director at Emory-Georgia Tech Center for Health Discovery and Well Being. “When a woman takes time to understand her personal health profile, she can also learn more about approaches that can help her restore, maintain and optimize health. Developing a personal health plan and setting realistic goals can help a woman find balance, including making time to relax, eat healthy and keep moving.”

Your Bones Having strong bones is not only a concern of women in their 40s and 50s. Young adults in their 20s and even teens are becoming more aware of how important bone health is through different programs and initiatives like Best Bones Forever, which was launched in 2009 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This year, a resolution in the Michigan House of Representatives was passed declaring October 20, 2011 as Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Day. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), “In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone density, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis and broken bones. Of those 10, eight million are women.”

Beyond just the X-ray, some women may be required to do a bone scan, which involves an injection before getting started. This is only necessary to detect bone cancer, infections or other abnormalities. If weak bones run in your family or you are experiencing skeletal pain, this is a test you may want to ask your doctor about. The bottom line is you are never too young or too old to improve the health of your bones.

Whether or not you suffer from osteoporosis or other bone degenerative diseases, a bone density test, also called densitometry or DXA scan, should be at the top of your list. Before the invention of this test, osteoporosis was detected only if and after you broke a bone. Today’s test uses X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other minerals are inside a segment of your bone. Besides testing for osteoporosis, these scans can also determine your risk of fractures or broken bones as well as any decreases in bone density.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density testing if: • You’re a woman age 65 or older • You’re a postmenopausal woman under age 65 with one or more risk factors for osteoporosis • You’re older than age 50 and you’ve experienced a broken bone • You’re a postmenopausal woman and you’ve stopped taking estrogen therapy or hormone therapy

One of the most important parts of a woman’s health care routine should be a self-breast exam. This early form of detection of abnormal lumps is crucial and life-saving. “Clinical breast exams begin at age 20 with followups every three years,” says Sara Mobasseri, MD, Medical Director of Women’s Heart Services at Piedmont Heart Institute. “Those with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors should get their first screening mammogram at age 35, otherwise they should begin at age 40.” Although strides are being made to prevent and treat breast cancer, it is still a prevalent disease and one that needs to be at the forefront of a woman’s mind when it comes to her health. According to BreastCancer.org, it is estimated that about one in eight women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2010, there were more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. There are many different factors that affect the chances of a woman developing breast cancer including age, genetics, (about 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, according to BreastCancer. org), being overweight and exposure to chemicals in plastic such as bisphenol A (BPA) just to name a few. With the development of BRAC Analysis, this genetic test is said to help identify your risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC), an inherited condition that raises the risk of developing certain cancers. www.bestselfconnect.com

Pay attention to your calcium and vitamin D intake. According to the CDC, if you are in the age range of 19 to 50 your recommended daily calcium intake should be 1000 mg. For women 51 or older, it is 1200 mg. Also, engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day to keep your bones strong.

With all the resources and support systems out there, women have the power to educate themselves. Being armed with knowledge and facts about breast health is the first step toward the first step toward staying healthy.

Take Action! • Limit alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol — including beer, wine or liquor — limit yourself to no more than one drink a day. • Be aware of hormone therapy. Long-term combination hormone therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer. If you are on hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, ask your doctor about other options.* *Due to a study reported in The New England Journal of Medicine that links hormone therapy to breast cancer, the Food and Drug Administration recommends that women who want to take hormones only do so at the lowest dose and for the shortest possible time.

• Control your weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause. • Get plenty of physical activity. Being physically active can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. If you’re just starting a physical activity program, start slowly and build intensity gradually. • Avoid exposure to environmental pollution. While further studies are needed, some research suggests a link between breast cancer and exposure to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons found in vehicle exhaust and air pollution. -Courtesy of Mayo Clinic

Your Pelvis Keeping healthy below the belt involves being aware of any discomfort you may be experiencing. In addition to daily exercise and a good diet, pelvic screenings, exams and pap tests are invaluable in locating potential problems. Regular pap tests can find abnormalities and early detection is key to treating issues successfully. Health concerns involving this area can vary widely. While some pelvic health issues center around problems with bladder control, www.bestselfconnect.com

urinary incontinence and bowel incontinence, others can involve cancer of the cervix. Factors that may contribute to these concerns include childbirth, obesity, menopause, stress, straining during bowel movements and older age. Half of women over age 50 experience pelvic floor weakening (urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence), according to Mayo Clinic Women’s HealthSource. Treatments for pelvic floor dysfunction include physical therapy, medical treatments, acupuncture and, in some cases, surgery. Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. Once the pap test became more commonly used, the death rate declined by almost 70%. According to the new American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) guidelines, women aged 21 to 30 years should be screened every two years using either the standard pap test or liquid-based cytology. Women 30 years and older who have had three consecutive negative (i.e., normal) cervical cytology test results may be screened once every three years with either screening test. Women older than 30 years can also be co-screened with a combination of the pap test and an HPV test. In addition to taking notice of your pelvis area, you should also be aware of your colon. “At age 50, a woman should begin regular colonoscopies and repeat every five years,” advises Mobasseri. “Again, with a family history of colon cancer or other risk factors present, these screenings should begin at age 45. Age should not be the only indicator in preventative health care in women. It’s important for all women to know their family history and risk factors and to talk about these with their doctor.” Whether you opt for the non-invasive virtual colonoscopy, a sigmoidoscopy, (a procedure in which a lighted tube and camera are inserted), or a colonoscopy, which involves a longer tube to examine the entire area, it is important to get one done.

There are approximately 40 types of genital HPV. Some types can cause cervical cancer in women and can also cause other kinds of cancer in both men and women. WOMEN’S Health Directory

Your Hormones There are many different aspects that can affect hormone health such as your diet, exercise regimen and age. Typically, the issue of hormone health comes up as a woman approaches menopause and directly afterward. Whether or not you need hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a personal decision and one that should be made after considering all the facts.

Gynecology Associates of North Georgia 475 Tribble Gap Rd., Ste. 225, Cumming, 30040 (770) 887-0559

“Starting hormone therapy requires evaluation by a physician with focus on endocrine function. Personal history, symptoms, family history, physical exam and certain laboratory tests should be reviewed, as well as extensive discussion about the risk and benefits of the therapy,” advises Ceana Nezhat, MD, FACOG, FACS Gynecologist Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Northside Hospital. “Many of the symptoms that we associate with menopause can be addressed and treated. Currently, there are many different combinations and forms of hormones and the therapy must be tailored to the individual.” Nezhat goes on to explain that there are many medical conditions that require the use of hormones such as diabetes, thyroid conditions, adrenal insufficiency, and female sex hormone imbalance due to malfunction or lack of ovarian function. Certain clues that hormone therapy might be indicated include changes in weight, hair loss, changes in mood, sexual desire, acne, fatigue, abnormal uterine bleeding, dry skin, and vaginal dryness. “When re-establishing optimal hormone levels, it is important to consider the source. Bio-identical hormones, from natural sources have the exact same molecular structure as the ones we produce, making them easily recognizable and usable,” explains Sharon Bent-Harley, MD of Harley Anti-Aging Institute. “Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, do not have this same structure and would not be expected to impact cells in the exact same manner as bio-identical hormones.” In 2002, a government-funded study called the Women’s Health Initiative did a study on HRT and found certain risks, such as cancer, to be linked to long-term use of this therapy. They advise that women with breast cancer, heart disease, liver disease, or a history of blood clots are not candidates for HRT. If you are considering HRT for yourself, make sure you check with a physician before beginning any type of treatment.

Practically every check up begins with an evaluation of your vitals, and rightfully so. Your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and other important numbers all have a monumental effect on the rest of your body. Don’t overlook these important screenings, and instead make them your top priority, even if you feel you are leading a healthy lifestyle.

Blood Pressure Screening. Ideal blood pressure for women is less than 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). Get tested at least every two years if you have normal blood pressure (lower than 120/80). Get tested once a year if you have blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89. Discuss treatment with your doctor or nurse if you have blood pressure 140/90 or higher. Cholesterol Check. Have your cholesterol checked at least every five years starting at about age 20. “It is important to note that acceptable cholesterol levels for women are slightly different than those for men. Total cholesterol count should be less than 200 mg/dl. LDL (“L” for bad or lethal cholesterol) should be less than 100 mg/dl, while HDL (“H” for good or healthy cholesterol) should be 50 mg/dl or higher and triglycerides lower than 150 mg/dl.,” explains Mobasseri. Blood Glucose Test. Have a blood glucose test every three years starting at age 45 to test for diabetes or pre-diabetes. If you are already showing signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if it runs in your family, you may want to get tested before 45. www.bestselfconnect.com

If you haven’t already, try forming a health care plan today – include an exercise program, diet evaluation and a look into your family’s health history. Need some extra help? Try talking to a nutrition coach or wellness guide who can help point you in the right direction. “On a daily basis, every woman from the teens to the 80s should be concerned about disease prevention by getting enough sleep, enough exercise and enough vegetables/fruit and anti-oxidants in their diets,” advises Eva Arkin, MD at Premier Care for Women. Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond, each stage of your life presents different health challenges. The best thing to do is meet them head on, educate yourself and maintain an active lifestyle both mentally and physically.

In the end, it’s up to you to keep an eye on the signs your body is showing you. Don’t wait for a discomfort to turn into something bigger. “Some risk factors that you have little or no control over include family history of a disease, age, ethnicity, and a health problem that can raise the risk of another problem,” says Brigham. “Some risk factors you can control include what you eat, how much physical activity you get, whether you use tobacco and how much alcohol you drink. Awareness of these factors is crucial in developing a healthy plan of action for a lifetime.”

The Makeover of Breast Cancer Survivor Sharon Hayes-Terrell Atlanta native Sharon Hayes-Terrell describes herself as “tall as a Georgia pine and bronze as a Georgia peach.” As founder of RRS Talent and Modeling Agency, she provides models for local fashion shows, ad campaigns, tradeshows and catalog photo shoots. But in April of 2007, Sharon endured a stroke that left her sight-impaired for a year. Then, at the end of 2008, she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.

BEFORE

Her treatment was very aggressive; she underwent chemotherapy treatments, a double mastectomy and radiation therapy at Emory Winship Cancer Institute. But today this wife, mother of four and grandmother is a cancer survivor. Now she looks forward to a bright, cancer-free future.

The Journey Sharon’s journey was brought to light through a non-profit Atlanta-based organization, Pink Reveal. Its founder, Saint Hilaire, has been a fashion stylist throughout his career and was inspired to begin Pink Reveal to renew and restore individuals affected by breast cancer. When he thought about how he could pair the disease with his experience, he came up with makeovers for women who have survived breast cancer. Driven by the belief that individuals who have experienced breast cancer deserve this revitalizing experience, Saint has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure in Atlanta to honor survivors and donate to the cause. Sharon’s makeover began with a personal bra fitting at Intimacy. Having had a double mastectomy and reconstruction a year ago, Sharon was in need of a new bra wardrobe. She found out during her fitting with Carrie at Intimacy that she needed to go down a size in the band, and up one size in the cup. Sharon’s reconstruction surgery left her breasts uneven in size, which is very common in all women, according to Carrie. So they added a Number Two Takeout breast enhancer in one cup, and voila! Sharon was uplifted, even and proud of her new look.

The Makeover Stop two in Sharon’s fabulous adventure was the office of Dr. Harvey “Chip” Cole, quadruple board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon, of Oculus Plastic Surgery and Oculus Skin Care Centre. After an initial consultation with Dr. Cole, Sharon wanted to look a little more rested, and opted for the non-surgical Tear Trough Rejuvenation procedure, an in-office treatment of facial fillers. Dr. Cole injected Restylane, a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, biocompatible with the human body, under Sharon’s eyes, instantly filling in the loss of volume that occurs naturally over time. Sharon can expect the results to last from 12 to 18 months. “My eyes have never looked so vibrant, thanks to Dr. Cole,” says Sharon, “I no longer wear concealer under my makeup.”

While at Oculus, Sharon met with Harvard-trained, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Connors, who specializes in surgeries of the breast and nose. Not totally satisfied with the results of her breast reconstruction, Sharon asked Dr. Connors BEST SELF ATLANTA

what could be done to improve the symmetry and overall look of her breasts. With the new Vectra 3D Imaging System, Dr. Connors took a three-dimensional picture of Sharon with Vectra’s six cameras, then manipulated the image on the computer screen to match Sharon’s wants and needs. Now armed with a realistic image of what she could look like postsurgery, Sharon is working with Dr. Connors on the Dr. Chip Cole consulting with Sharon next steps.

Trust your face to a

facial plastic surgeon.

Chemotherapy had left Sharon with total hair loss a year ago, but now with about four inches of new growth, she was a perfect candidate for extensions. Sharon consulted with board-certified stylist Moe Coles, owner of Attitudes by Moe! He recommended her natural jet black hair be lightened with a color lift by five levels, using Matrix Socolor, bringing it to a soft chestnut brown to complement her complexion. He also added extensions using 100% natural Virgin Indian Remy hair. The final touch was a master cut and style, giving her a beautiful shoulder length stack revealing her new attitude. “Color has never been added to my hair, and with the new sassy cut, I look ten years younger,” Sharon says. Ready for some rest and relaxation, Sharon spent a half-day at Spa Sydell having a signature facial by Valerie Armstrong, deep tissue massage with Tieshia Floyd and manicure/pedicure by Galina. Valerie noticed Sharon’s skin was dehydrated and sensitive, so she prescribed a hydrating facial for Sharon on a regular basis. Stress reduction is an important part of breast cancer treatment and post-treatment. Regular touch therapies, such as facials and massage, have been found to be beneficial for relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and improving immune function.

The Last Stop Feeling a bit too conservative for her inner-fashionista, Sharon turned to Crystal Rock of Authentic Beauty for a more glamorous look. First Crystal defined Sharon’s brows with Wonderbrow gel in Eva, a dark golden brown. Then she blended black pencil along the upper lashline onto the lid, and topped it off with Goddess Shimmer, a rich, warm gold, perfect for enhancing her skin tone and eye color. Next, Crystal added false lashes to open up Sharon’s eyes. To highlight her high cheekbones, Crystal used a touch of Gold Rush and Black Cherry blush on the apples of Sharon’s cheeks. On her lips, Crystal used a soft brown pencil and finished it off with a warm, coppery bronze gloss. Sharon completed her makeover experience with a shopping spree at Bloomingdale’s Lenox Square, where she updated her look in the New View department. Sharon’s innate sense of fashion and love of color mixed well with the teal silk Anne Klein pieces Bloomingdale’s Patti Batten selected for her. “This has been a truly wonderful experience, being among a fantastic group of gifted individuals who care so much,” Sharon says, “My spirit has been uplifted tremendously. My friends and family keep saying, what’s going on with you? I’ve been so excited about the transformation that it’s been difficult to sleep. I’ve been wondering, why me? It is such a blessing.”

The best retailers supplements. Over lasting customer relationships. we had were those who the next 6 years, shared our passion for the science—and applying I worked at 4 more health food stores. Through it to their customers. Greg Hynson was our first each of these years, I asked many questions, EAS retailer in Atlanta. directed to all of the managers and storeowners that I worked with. It was very rare that a real, Greg’s approach is simple: don’t sell what’s credible answer was provided. The more I learned just popular. Sell and promote products with about the real science of nutrition, the less I real science and that really work. Greg infects believed what people were telling me, what consumers with confidence, guides them to advertisements were claiming and what supposed products that will yield a benefit and inspires them “experts” exhorted as fact. to come back…and tell their friends. In a world Starting EAS in early 1993—back then we spelled out the letters as “Experimental and Applied Sciences”—and introducing much of the world to creatine, we did something that no one had done: developing and introducing performance nutrition products that had university proof of working, of being better, and of delivering real world results. We are thrilled to welcome the O You! event to Atlanta this year! Can you tell me more about it? This is our fifth one, and it really is a way of bringing O Magazine to life for the readers. People get to see Dr. Mehment Oz, Martha Beck, Suze Orman, and all of our great contributors up close and personal. They will do presentations, and then they open it up to questions and answers. People really enjoy getting to see experts and interact with them. Oprah doesn’t always speak at these events, but she is speaking this year. She will close out the program, and I think it’s going to be very exciting. People come to us for inspiration, and I think we deliver that.

Why do you feel it’s an important event for women? What can they get out of it? I always hear from people who attend that the camaraderie is amazing, and the information is great. Last year we had people from all over the world...I met people from Australia and Brazil. People came because they were excited to meet other people who read the magazine. There is something about when women get together...amazing things happen. People come with friends, relatives...a few women brought their husbands as well. It’s just a nice way to connect and reconnect.

“Live your best life” is the motto for O, The Oprah Magazine and the theme for the O You! Event. How does the event bring that theme to life? “Live your best life” is the mantra of the magazine. It’s what we said from the very beginning when we started 10 years ago. What I always

Photo courtesy of O YOU!/O, The Oprah Magazine

hear from people after they read O Magazine is that they feel better about themselves and are empowered. We meet women where they are, and that’s what I think women are most appreciative of. I don’t care who you are or what you’ve achieved, there’s always room to learn something else, and room to be better.

In addition to “The Gayle King Show” we hear you’ll be hosting “Ask Oprah’s All Stars.” Can you tell us about the show? It’s getting the best of team Oprah together, and I’m the moderator. Dr. Phil, Suze Orman and Dr. Oz bring their A game. We’ll be working with the audience and talking about the experts’ areas of expertise. We’re taking questions from the audience, telling their stories, and you get the best advice from people who are at the top of their game. www.bestselfconnect.com

Aren’t you supposed to be slowing down?’ I thought about what she said for a second, and I’m really glad to be working as hard as I am and getting to do the variety that I do. I feel really fortunate to have that. I get to play a role in many different mediums at the same time, and I can’t complain about that.

I love hanging out with my kids, (daughter) Kirby and (son) Will. I’m not really that different from anyone else in terms of what I like to do. I like to hang out with my friends and eat good food!

From Baby Boomers to Senior Boomers: 5 tips to keep you healthy and fit

What do Sylvester Stallone, Cher and Diane Keaton have in common, other than fame? They’re among the first wave of baby boomers to become “senior boomers.” This year, more than 10,000 baby boomers a day will turn 65 – that’s one every eight seconds, a pattern expected to continue for the next 19 years. Aging is different now than it was for our parents and grandparents. More people are living longer than at any other time in history. “Our generation is associated with social change, and we need to become activists in promoting healthful behaviors,” says baby boomer Carole Gardner, M.D., a geriatrician and chief of elder care for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “Adopting a healthy and active lifestyle is especially important for seniors with chronic medical conditions. Physical activity can be an effective treatment for some. However, you should consult a physician before starting an exercise regimen.” Dr. Gardner recommends 5 easy tips to help baby boomers be healthy and thrive!

1) Keep active Do something to keep fit each day—something you enjoy that maintains strength, balance, flexibility, and promotes cardiovascular health. Physical activity such as walking helps you stay at a healthy weight, prevent or control illness, sleep better, reduce stress, avoid falls, and look and feel better too. Learn more about the benefits of a walking regimen at www.everybodywalk.org.

3) Maintain a healthy weight Extra weight increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Use our BMI (body mass index) calculator to find out what you should weigh for your height. Get to your healthy weight and stay there by eating right and keeping active. Replace sugary drinks with water. Water is calorie free!

4) Get regular check-ups Check-ups for older men and women • Vision. Every year get your eyes checked for glaucoma and other age-related eye problems. • Osteoporosis. Ask your doctor if you need a bone density test to find out if you have thinning or brittle bones. Also ask your doctor about calcium and vitamin D supplements to help your bones. • Colon cancer tests. Get checked for colon cancer as often as your doctor recommends. Ask your doctor which test is best for you. • Skin cancer. Do a skin self-exam every three months, to look for any changes in your skin. Check-ups for women only • Pap test and pelvic exam. Ask your doctor how often you should have a Pap test. As

you get older, you may not need to have a Pap test as often. • Breast exam and mammogram. Have a doctor check your breasts every year. Ask how often you should have a mammogram, which is an X-ray of your breasts. A mammogram can spot breast cancer before it can be felt and when it is easier to treat. Check-ups for men only • Prostate exam. Talk to your doctor about whether you should have a blood test (called a PSA test) for prostate cancer. Talk about the benefits and risks of the test with your doctor. • Abdominal aortic aneurysm. Ask your doctor if you need a test to check for an aneurysm. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is the bulging or ballooning of the large artery in your stomach. It is caused by weakening of the artery’s walls. You may need a test if you ever smoked or if your parent, brother, sister, or child has had an aneurysm.

5) Manage stress Try exercise or relaxation techniques – perhaps meditation or yoga – as a means of coping. Make time for friends and social contacts and fun. Successful coping can affect our health and how we feel. Learn the role of positive thinking.

Carole Gardner, MD

2) Eat well

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia

Combined with physical activity, eating nutritious foods in the right amounts can help keep you healthy. Many illnesses—such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis—can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes and exercise. Calcium and vitamin D supplements can help women prevent osteoporosis.

Carole Gardner, MD is a board-certified geriatrician and chief of elder care for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. A graduate of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University, Gardner completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington, KY.

Breast Cancer Prevention

How frequently should women undergo mammograms?

What should a patient look for in an integrative medical center?

Mammogram recommendations vary depending on a patient’s risk factors. In general, baseline mammograms are done at age 40, with subsequent mammograms every one to two years. Mammogram frequency increases as a woman’ risk factors increase.

Patients in an integrative medical center receive individualized treatment plans to help assess their risks for breast cancer and prevention strategies. If diagnosed, our center plays a critical supportive role in helping coordinate conventional therapy with other modalities like acupuncture, nutrition counseling, stress management, and vitamin therapy. Integrative testing is also offered. At ACHIM, we also work with integrative specialists around the country to help patients make informed decisions. This may involve consulting with oncologists nationally and locally.

When do you recommend genetic testing for women? Genetic testing is helpful upon diagnosis of breast cancer to help determine a course of treatment and future detection regimens. Many women get genetic testing if a family member has had breast cancer to help them determine their risks.

What are the most common risk factors for breast cancer? The strongest risk factor is family history. Following that, risk factors include smoking, obesity, lack of childbearing or breastfeeding, and hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women. Hormone replacement therapy in perimenopausal women does not appear to increase risks of breast cancer. Again, it is synthetic hormone replacement therapy, not bioidentical, that seems to confer the risks.

Is there a link between estrogen and breast cancer? Breast cancer is related to a build up of estrogen in the various tissues of the body, including fat. In addition to simply withholding estrogen from women, we also need to help them understand that estrogen must be broken down and eliminated in the body to prevent estrogen build up.

What is estrogen detoxification? Estrogen detoxification involves breaking down estrogen into individual metabolites that the body can eliminate. Fiber (in the form of fruits and vegetables), low saturated fats, and plenty of healthy fats improve estrogen detoxification. Exercise is critical in metabolizing excess estrogen. Stress reduction also plays a role in minimizing hormonal variations that can trigger or activate a breast cancer gene.

Modern Rhinoplasty

Q & A with a Specialist in Facial Plastic Surgery: Dr. Marc Yune

What are the current trends in rhinoplasty? Techniques with very predictable changes. The cartilages need to be preserved and reshaped by minimal removal and maximal predictability using suturing techniques. This allows the surgeon control within millimeters.

In what setting are these procedures performed? Typically in a hospital or outpatient surgery setting. Most surgeons use general or sedation anesthesia. Occasionally local anesthesia may be used for minor treatments.

What should I expect for my immediate post operative experience? Healthy patients go home the day of surgery. There is usually an external splint that is very visible but equally important. Packing the inside of the nose is rarely needed in an educated patient avoiding blood thinners and straining as in exercise initially and in managing any problems with easy bruising and bleeding. Pain is well controlled with oral analgesics. The splint is then removed in a week and the patient’s appearance is normal by then with minimal swelling and usually no bruising.

What are my long term expectations? Although normal appearances occur immediately after splint removal, patients will notice subtle changes for several months or more. The airway also improves over the course of several weeks to months.

How does a surgeon create a natural appearance? A well trained surgeon will discuss this with the patient thoroughly. Most use numerous pictures of previous patients to demonstrate their results. Most also offer digital imaging of the patients to show predictable results that

match their techniques with the patient’s desires. It is a great communication tool that allows the patient and the surgeon to plan a procedure visually. This is an aesthetic procedure so visualizing truly matters.

So how does one choose a surgeon for modern predictable rhinoplasty? There are many surgeons who offer rhinoplasty but few who specialize in this area. This is primarily due to their training experience. Rhinoplasty is rarely offered in substantial numbers in most residencies. This is usually obtained in post residency training. This is received through fellowship programs. The highest level of training that was available to me was a fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the society related to The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The most specialized board and society as it relates to rhinoplasty. Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

SAY HELLO TO

PAIN FREE What We Help With: • Arthritic Joint Pain • Knee Pain • Degenerated Discs • Hip & S/I Joint Pain • Numbness & Radiating Pain • TMJ, Bursitis & Tendonitis

I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.

What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work

Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. Pay for college without going broke!

2:49:58 PM

Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Patti-Jo Shapiro Scholarship

LUNT EE

By Rachel Payne

Patti-Jo Shapiro was a very dear friend of mine and was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer, sinus cancer. Her courage was demonstrated with a positive attitude and she did not waste a minute of the precious time she had. Patti-Jo, best known for her dedication to the Lilburn community, was on a mission. There was a checklist of things she wished to accomplish and she shared part of that list with me. Being her personal trainer and a fellow member of the Lilburn Woman’s Club, I was well aware of Patti-Jo ‘s desire to start an educational scholarship as part of her legacy to the community. While the Woman’s Club worked on the legalities of getting the fund set up, I was approached with an opportunity to host a makeover event. We created a ‘Girls Night Out’ and used this event as a way to raise money for her scholarship fund with Trish McEvoy makeup artists doing makeovers. The girls who participated would dress up and get their photos taken on the ‘red carpet.’ At the event, we raised over $400 for the Patti-Jo Shapiro Scholarship through the sale of Trish McEvoy makeup. We served refreshments along with lots of laughs. We also learned the expert’s tricks to looking glamorous day or night and all had a great time. Patti-Jo was passionate about health, fitness, education and community. There is no better way to celebrate than to bring together all of those elements in memory of a lady devoted to giving back to others. Patti-Jo Shapiro Scholarship - a college scholarship for young women who have made a difference in the greater Lilburn community; in honor of Patti-Jo Shapiro, dedicated to community service and education. Fragile Kids Foundation

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue

The Fragile Kids Foundation assists over 400 children each year with grants of equipment by sharing items for rehabilitation and referring families to partner organizations working to meet a variety of challenges for medically fragile children. The Foundation is led by a small staff with big dreams and volunteers are a vital part of it. The volunteer projects are rewarding, stress-free and fun and can include becoming an ambassador, event planner, public speaker, bookworm and more. Contact the Fragile Kids Foundation for more information.

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in north Georgia, and operates through a network of foster homes in the north metro Atlanta area. Volunteers are an integral part of the organization and are needed to work at adoption events and foster animals. Foster parents care for the animals rescued from the shelters until they are adopted. The duration of foster care can range from a couple of days to several weeks. If you are unable to foster, donations are always welcome.

my journey Carey Carter When you’re in the business of making people look and feel their best and you’ve been around for over 20 years, chances are you’re doing something right. Carey Carter, co-owner of Carter Barnes Hair Artisans, proves how drive and determination can not only keep you in business but also make you a success. Besides his business, Carter is also passionate about different charitable organizations. Recently, he was awarded the Community Service Award by WXIA Channel 11 at the Bodies as a Work of Art event benefitting The Chelko Foundation and “The Heart of Empowerment” award from The Chelko Foundation for battered women. What charitable events are you involved with? There are so many that I can’t name them all but there are some that are very near and dear to me, and some that are very personal. They include Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home, the Chelko Foundation, Jaden’s Ladder, UNICEF, G-CAPP, DIFFA - Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, Meals on Wheels and Project Open Hand.

What are you passionate about? Success and helping under-privileged children to have a better life. Also reading and Pop-Tarts. What motivated to first get into the salon/beauty business? When you can’t afford to go to college but know that you are artistic and a hard worker, this seemed like a natural idea, plus I knew you could make a really good living. What do you love about this line of work? I love making somebody look better but I even like it better when they feel good looking. There is nothing more motivating than a great new color or cut. How has the business changed/evolved since you and your partners first opened Carter Barnes? How have you adjusted to these changes? There is no doubt that the economy has had a large impact over the last three or four years. I think we have been luckier than many retailers. We keep our prices down even when all the manufacturers are going up on prices. We go to great lengths to know what is new and what the customers are asking for. If you are one of the first anything new, you are going to come out ahead. Probably the most important thing we do is offer services a la carte. What is something that every new business owner should know before starting their venture? Make sure you have plenty of parking, a good location, don’t overprice yourself in the beginning; take it slowly. Chances are you 82 OCTOBER 2011 BEST SELF ATLANTA

will be renting your place, so read your commitment contract very carefully or have a lawyer read it. Don’t believe the old adage that, “if you build it, they will come.” Wrong. You and your staff have to get out there and network, make yourself as visible as possible. Many hair salons have come and gone – how do you account for your staying power? After being in this industry and business for so long, being able to provide a family feel to the work environment says a lot about your company. Generally speaking everyone has to go through a rigorous training period in order to be considered for a position. Afterward going through that, you are truly accepted as part of the family. We also offer great benefits and plenty of perks that are considered once in a lifetime opportunities. The Carter Barnes family is quite exceptional and we aim to provide the best for them. That is a great key to gain motivation and to account for all the years of our staying power. What or who motivates you each day? First my partners, and then my passion and will to stay at the top. But that could not happen if I didn’t have a great staff doing their jobs. They make me so very proud. What is the best piece of advice you received? When I was in my early 20s and partying a little too much, my manager at the salon told me, contrary to what I thought, anyone could be replaced (meaning me, if I didn’t straightening up). I got the message.

Why do you feel it’s important to give back to the community? I truly believe if you give back to the community, the time may come when you need help and the community will be there for you. That’s not why you do it in the beginning, but it’s good to know that you have established a bond with the community.
