A sudden, strong urge to pass urine, urinating eight or more times per day, and getting up at least twice each night to go to the bathroom can be symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). OAB occurs when a miscommunication between the bladder and the nervous system causes the bladder muscles to contract at a time other than when one wishes to urinate. It’s Time to Band Together In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Best Self Atlanta has partnered with Kaiser Permanente to raise funds for Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta by selling pink headbands. Our Band Together Against Breast Cancer initiative comes to a close this month at our photo shoot and networking party hosted by Concourse Athletic Club on October 9. As this initiative wraps up, we turn our attention to “Movember” next month, which invites men worldwide to grow moustaches to raise awareness for prostate cancer. To support this movement, Best Self Atlanta will hold our second annual Moustache Dash 5K on November 16, stepping off from New Balance Buckhead.

The whole family is welcome at this fun-filled race, which includes a 5K or one-mile fun run option. We’ll have stick-on moustaches, temporary moustache tattoos and even face painters for your upper lip. Wear your moustache with a smile and spread the word about men’s health issues that need our attention and support.

For better or worse, our mothers have a profound impact on our lives. In Kiera Palmer’s case, her mother’s influence is undoubtedly positive, though bittersweet. Palmer’s mother passed away at age 40 from breast cancer, inspiring her daughter to raise money and awareness to combat the disease. What are some common foundation trends people get stuck in?

People think more is better when it comes to foundation, but using too much can lead to an unnatural look and even cause the skin to produce more oil in some cases. Start with a very small amount and build the coverage only in places where you really need it.

What blush trends do people get stuck in?

Using the same color until it runs out and even longer.

Also, always sticking with powder instead of creams or sticks.

What lip color trends do people get stuck in?

I see too many women still wearing a glossy pink that is out of 1987.

What eye makeup trends do people get stuck in?

The most common one would be the smoky eye with lots of eyeliner, which will close in the eyes. Instead, use a nude or flesh tone color as a liner on the bottom inner part of the eye to make eyes appear open.

Why should women update their hair color and style?

Any lifestyle change that necessitates a new wardrobe also necessitates a new hair style. A subtle transformation can yield as much impact as a total makeover.

How should someone update their foundation for the fall?

Often, people need two foundation colors: one for summer and one for winter. As people’s summer tans fade, mixing the summer and winter colors often gives the right transition color for fall.

What are the most important factors when selecting a foundation?

Ingredients and color. Choose a foundation with ingredients that will improve the health and vitality of your skin, such as plant-based oils and antioxidants. Avoid ingredients like parabens, mineral oils, talc and synthetic colors that can clog pores and irritate skin.

What styles of foundation are best for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond?

Typically, skin loses moisture as we age, so a moisturizing foundation with a plant oil base, such as coconut oil, will improve skin condition while promoting a youthful appearance. www.bestselfatlanta.com

What is the most important factor when selecting a blush?

Your underlying skin tones and your hair color will affect the blush color and application you choose.

Also, consider how much time you want to spend on application. Do you want to dab some cream blush on with your fingers and go, or spend more time highlighting your cheeks and creating dimension?

What blushes are best for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond?

Always use mineral makeup.

I have been using Jane Iredale Skin Care Makeup since I was 25! Women in their 40s will also benefit from a cream to add moisture and radiance. I like to think at any age you can wear any type of blush as long as you know how to use the product you have.

What blush do you recommend this season?

Jane Iredale’s PurePressed Blush in color “Whisper” and In Touch Cream Blush in color “Connection.” The cream blush makes it dewy and radiant on the skin.

What are the current trends for fall lip color?

Deep red or chocolate brown lips that are primarily matte. There are a lot of options, but the common denominator for fall is richness of color.

What is the most important factor when selecting a lip color?

The only real rule of thumb is to balance out your look.

Make sure that if you have a bold mouth, you have softer eyes. When trying a new lip color, give yourself time to let it grow on you. We are creatures of habit, and it can take two hours or longer to get used to a different lip color.

What styles of lip color are best for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond?

In your 30s, this is the time to have fun and play with some trends! Then as we age, we tend to lose color in our skin, so the lips will appear stronger. A little more color makes us look brighter and a bit healthier.

Just remember that if you haven’t changed your makeup, people can tell exactly how old you are by the way you wear it.

How can someone get a dramatic look with their eye makeup this season?

Start with a volumizing mascara, and top it off with a bold black liner on your lash line. If your lashes are still not getting the length and thickness you desire, you can add eyelash extensions.

What is the most important factor when applying eye makeup?

First determine the shape of the eye, which will help you decide whether or not a bold, smoky eye or a natural, nude eye will be best suited. For close-set eyes, stay away from dark colors on the lid area, which can make the eyes appear closed. With deep-set eyes, use darker colors in the crease area and more soft nudes or vibrant colors on the lid.

What styles of lip color are best for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond?

At any age, the best style is soft and natural because it’s classy and timeless.

What are the most important factors when selecting a hair color and style?

Your hair type, meaning hair texture (coarse, medium or fine), density (the number of individual hair strands on one square inch of the scalp), porosity (the ability of the hair to absorb moisture) and elasticity (the ability to stretch and return to its original length without breaking). Also consider the pH levels required for your hair type, the growth pattern of your hair, your facial features and your skin tone.

What hair colors are best for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond?

If you’re thinking red, go blond. Red hair is tough on mature skin tones, but a honey blond with golden tones works every time. If you’re a brunette, shifting from espresso brown to a softer shade like maple or chestnut can erase years.

If you want to show off your gray, use cool, ashy highlights to improve the color. They are one of the best kept secrets of stylish, gray haired women.

Great Life Giveaway Winner Meets Oprah!

Ingredients: Vegetable cooking spray 1½ cups finely crushed pretzel sticks ½ cup butter, melted 3 tbsp. sugar 1 large egg white 40 caramels 1 tsp. vanilla extract ¾ cup finely chopped pecans ¼ tsp. sea salt Method: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line bottom and sides of an 8-inch square pan with aluminum foil, allowing 2 to 3 inches to extend over sides. Coat foil with cooking spray.

Stir together crushed pretzels, melted butter, sugar and egg white. Press mixture on bottom of pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 11 minutes.

While crust is baking, combine milk and caramels in a medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes or until caramels melt. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Remove crust from oven. Pour caramel mixture over hot crust.

Sprinkle with pecans and salt.

Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes. Chill at least 30 minutes.

Lift mixture from pan, using foil sides as handles. Cut into 20 bars.

Store in refrigerator up to one week.

Explore new ways to get more out of life Fun and Fitness at Gran Fondo

By Lizzy Stroud Italian culture has made its way across the pond in food and fashion, and now it’s here in fitness too. The City of Roswell, the Southern Bicycle League and Bike Roswell! have partnered to bring Gran Fondo Italia to Georgia on October 19. This international cycling event is the first of its kind in the South, blending recreational cycling with the flair of Italian culture.

The Gran Fondo Italia ride in Roswell is modeled after the popular Italian style of long-distance group rides that offer amateur riders a recreational ride with some competition thrown in. This particular event offers ride lengths of 34 miles, 63 miles and 106 miles, as well as a Gran Premio della Montagna challenge. This timed climb section lets riders compete against each other or themselves for their personal best times. No matter your skill level as a rider, everyone begins this ride together at a combined start with a police escort, contributing to the sense of fun and camaraderie that makes the event famous.

And your Italian cultural immersion doesn’t end with the ride. After the cycling is done, the Gran Fondo Italia Expo will be held at Roswell City Hall. The expo features the best products Italy has to offer, with merchandise ranging from cycling nutrition, wine, travel packages and clothing.

The City of Roswell, the Southern Bicycle League and Bike Roswell! hope to get Atlantans riding bikes more often for fun, fitness and friendship. The Grand Fondo Italia Atlanta-Roswell ride is the perfect way to get everyone up and riding, with some Italian style to boot! Registration starts at $90 and varies based on course length.

This month, try pairing your favorite wine with spirits of a different sort. Ghosts of Marietta offers a Spirits and Spirits Tour, combining fine wine and good scares for a tasty, spooky gathering. Marietta’s long history holds plenty of frightening tales, from Civil War soldiers to mysterious residents of Marietta’s older homes. You will hear about all of them on this tour, which begins at the Marietta Wine Market with a glass of wine and a few ghost stories. Then the tour takes to the streets for a lantern-lit one-hour walking portion. Ghosts of Marietta also offers a haunted pub crawl, a ride on the “Scaryetta” trolley, and private tours. Tickets start at $17 for adults but may vary based on the chosen tour.

Enjoy the whimsy and beauty of Cirque du Soleil right here in Atlanta. One of their newest touring shows, Amaluna, will be performed under the blue and yellow big top at Atlantic Station starting October 3. This show, the group’s 33rd production, celebrates the power of women by transporting the audience to a mystical island governed by goddesses and the lunar phases. Plus, the cast is 70 percent female and is accompanied by an all-female band. Tickets start at $35 for adults.

Ingrown toenails curve and grow into the skin, which can be caused by trauma such as stubbing the toe or running or walking in a tight toe box shoe. This can create pain, redness and swelling in the toe. You should seek professional treatment if you have pain lasting longer than 24 hours, signs of infection such as nausea, vomiting, chills and fever, redness, swelling, drainage or pus at the toe, or if you have a high-risk medical condition such as diabetes, nerve damage or poor circulation.

What can be done to fix a botched injection of Botox or another filler?

Depending on the filler utilized, we actually have a “cure.” Vitrase is an injectable that degrades hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm, Restalyne and Voluma.

Unfortunately, non-hyaluronic fillers such as Radiesse and Sculptura can’t be removed as easily, and one has to wait for them to degrade over time or address the outcome with a more invasive option. With Botox, if there is a significant asymmetry, the doctor can likely do additional injections to create a more aesthetic, symmetric appearance.

Can anything be done for cancer survivors experiencing

chronic problems from radiation?

Depending on the location of their radiation treatment, cancer survivors may experience poorly healing wounds, pain or bleeding with urination or bowel movements, among others. Fortunately in Atlanta, hyperbaric medicine (HBO) programs are widely available, including in the suburbs. ith the rapid progression of diagnostic technology, the Internet, social media and awareness campaigns in the latter half of the 20th century, it may be hard to believe that the topic of breast cancer was once taboo in America.

But until the 1970s, it was not a disease that women discussed publicly.

Then several famous women including Betty Ford, Happy Rockefeller and Nancy Reagan began to discuss their experience with breast cancer, and by the 1980s, many other organizations sprang up to support education, research and treatment.

The amount breast cancer incidence rates dropped from 2002 to 2003 alone

“One theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002,” says Dr. April L. Speed, CEO and owner of Just Breast, LLC. “These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased breast cancer risk.” Many experts believe that another factor influencing these numbers could be prenatal hormone levels. “Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen, was widely used by pregnant women in the 1950s and 1960s. Women who took the drug had an increased risk of breast cancer.”

In 1984, Massachusetts cancer survivor Margery Gould Rath wanted to celebrate fellow cancer survivors by raising funds for the American Cancer Society. With a committee of fellow survivors and other volunteers, Margie created a “move-along-a-thon” called Making Strides Against Cancer. The first event, held in Boston, drew 200 participants and instantly became an annual city tradition. In 1993, the event officially became known as the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, attracting 4,000 walkers at events in Boston and in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Since then, Margie’s vision has inspired 10 million walkers to participate in Making Strides events in more than 300 communities across the country, raising more than $594 million to fight breast cancer. Margie remained a dedicated Making Strides volunteer until she lost her battle with cancer in 2001. This year, Atlanta’s Making Strides walks take place at Centennial Olympic Park on October 25 and in Marietta on November 1.

Raise It Up Local activist launches The Pink Agenda in Atlanta to raise money, raise awareness and raise hell about breast cancer

At first glance, Kiera Palmer seems like an unlikely breast cancer activist. She spreads awareness and raises research funds for this disease that traditionally affects women twice her age. She works long hours in the insurance industry, which doesn’t seem like it would allow much spare time for fundraising. She hasn’t had the disease herself. And yet, an activist she is. “I did the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk four times,” she remembers. “I would have a fundraiser every fall for people to donate to the walk.” In 2013, she took her passion to the next level by spearheading the launch of The Pink Agenda in Atlanta, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to breast cancer awareness and fundraising.

“It’s like a second full-time job, for sure,” she says with a smile. But, she points out, “I’m so passionate about what we’re doing that it’s not work.”

Where does that passion come from?

Like many things in life, it started with her mother. When Palmer was just 16 years old, her mother passed away from breast cancer. Cindi Ranke was only 40 at the time, which spurs her daughter’s activism today: she works to include young women in the awareness of this disease, knowing that they may be at risk just as early in life as her own mother was.

Staying true to The Pink Agenda’s desire to cater to young breast cancer supporters and victims, a portion of these funds were awarded to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Program for Young Women with Breast Cancer in the form of a direct care grant. Increasingly, those young women seem to be all around us. Palmer says, “We have two women on our board of directors who are 31 and 29 who are both breast cancer survivors. We actually have a young woman coming to speak at [Toast to a Cure 2014] who is 30, and she is a three-time breast cancer survivor.”

And of course, Palmer’s mother is never far from her mind – Ranke, passed away from the disease at just 40 years old. “We want people to know that it’s not just your grandmother,” Palmer says. “This is affecting people you are hanging out with every single day.” And unfortunately, according to a study of more than 200,000 women in the SEER database, under-40 women with breast cancer are 39 percent more likely to die from it than their over-40 counterparts.

And The Pink Agenda’s answer to that frightening fact is, as they say, to “raise money, raise awareness and raise hell.” Bringing this feisty spirit to their important work helps pull in the younger crowd at events like Pink Your Drink, which they held in May at a local bar, or the annual Toast to a Cure, which will be held for the second year on October 16. “If you’re going out and you’re going to have a good time, come have a good time for something good,” Palmer says. To that end, this year’s Toast to a Cure includes a DJ, an open bar, a silent auction and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

Cleanse. It seems basic, but cleansing twice a day, every day is a must. Sally Larsen from Sally B’s Skin Yummies says, “Dirt and debris clog pores and cause your skin to appear dull.” Keep your glow going by cleansing regularly.

Exfoliate. Spa Sydell’s Elisa Townsend says, “A basic exfoliant will help to remove superficial dead skin cells and make 5:31 PM pores appear smaller.” When you select a scrub, Larsen says, be sure to evaluate your options. “Abrasive scrubs, like those containing apricot pits, can create tiny cuts in the epidermis.

Scrubs with plastic beads are gentle on your face but hard on the environment.” Instead of those, she recommends exfoliating with a toner with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA).

Rejuvenate. Leslie Brothers, owner of Health & Beauty Boutique, suggests a photofacial, or laser facial, to rejuvenate skin in fall and winter. It works by boosting collagen production in the dermis. “Skin thins as the aging process occurs, but the photofacial helps to thicken and tighten the skin,” Brothers explains. This noninvasive treatment can lessen age or sunspots and redness with no downtime.

Protect.Your skin needs year-round protection both from the sun and from harmful ingredients that fill many skin care products. Townsend says, “Use a daily moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF of 25.” When evaluating a sunscreen’s ingredients – or the ingredients of any skin product – use your resources.

Larsen recommends, “Use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep online database or their free app to identify and avoid toxic chemicals in your personal care products.”

besthealth The Facts on Shingles Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a disease caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). Dr. Angelica De Lisa from Piedmont Physicians at Roswell Road explains the risks, causes and symptoms of this disease.

VZV is the same virus that causes chicken pox, so logically, Dr. De Lisa says, anybody who has had chicken pox may be at risk for shingles. “In fact, it is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, usually many years after the initial chicken pox infection.” Seen most commonly in people older than age 50, additional risk factors include history of cancer or organ transplant, use of medications that weaken the immune system, or a history of diseases or disorders that affect the immune system.

Symptoms of shingles range from mild pain, itching and tingling to severe pain, numbness or burning sensations in specific areas of the body. “Fluid-filled lesions or blisters can appear at the same time or several days later,” Dr. De Lisa adds. If they appear on the face, these lesions can affect the ability to hear and see. The disease is usually diagnosed based on a history of pain in a specific area of the body along with the appearance of this characteristic rash.

Currently, no cure exists for this condition.

Though it sounds frightening, this disease is usually not life-threatening for people with a normal, healthy immune system.“With proper treatment, lesions clear and pain improves in most cases,” Dr. De Lisa says.

That treatment typically includes antivirals.“If used as soon as symptoms start, [antivirals] can decrease the duration and the intensity of the episode of shingles.”

“But for people who have conditions that affect the immune system, shingles could represent a serious threat,” Dr. De Lisa continues. If you want to reduce your risk, opt for the shingles vaccine called Zostavax. Even people who have had prior episodes of shingles can benefit from the vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend for most people 60 and up. Check with your doctor to ensure that you are eligible.

Answers to Your Questions About Lower Dose 3D Mammography The American Cancer Society says that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.1 3D mammography is an advanced, clinically proven screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection.

With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of the breast in one image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of an abnormal area; or hide a small cancer.

During the 3D mammogram, the X-ray arm sweeps over the breast taking multiple low dose images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image in one millimeter slices, decreasing tissue overlap. With the new C-View™ software, the 3D data is used to create the 2D images, eliminating the need for an additional X-ray exposure.

Researchers are finding that Hologic breast tomosynthesis combined with 2D mammography provides: • Greater than 25% improvement in overall cancer detection rates, finding 40% more invasive cancers than conventional 2D mammography alone.3-5

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What should I expect during the 3D mammography screening exam?

3D mammography is performed at the same time as the 2D mammogram with the same system. There is no additional compression required and the exam time may be just about the same or shorter than a 2D exam.

Is there more radiation dose?

With the lower dose 3D mammography, very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same as a standard 2D digital mammogram, and lower than a traditional film mammogram.

Who can have a 3D mammogram exam?

It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings.

What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?

A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year.

Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images,

called a diagnostic mammogram, to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated. Diagnostic mammogram focuses on the area of abnormality or the area of complaint.

Camp Horizon offers programs

Working with Georgia Division of Family and Children Services and private foster care placement agencies, Camp Horizon offers foster kids a full week of classic camp activities like swimming, biking, horseback riding and arts and crafts. Catering to these children’s unique needs is as important as the traditional camp fixtures, though, so Camp Horizon mixes in therapeutic support. In daily classes, kids are guided through topics like self-esteem, self-

through every age group. At age 12, campers can join the Leadership Development Program, which focuses on peer interaction, life skills and community service. At age 18, they move into the Camp Horizon Adult Mentoring Program (CHAMPs), which helps them transition into young adulthood after the foster system stops providing support. These crucial programs, along with regular outings and events throughout the year, help Georgia’s foster kids have fuller, happier childhoods.

Meredith Sidewater, a Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta board member, has relatives across three generations who experienced some form of cancer. With this strong family history, including a mother who carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, Sidewater suspected from an early age that she was also at risk. Despite that knowledge, she took a cautious approach to cancer prevention. After waiting 10 years to be tested herself, Sidewater then waited until she was almost 40 to have a preventative double mastectomy.

Today, she calls herself a “previvor.” To her, Sidewater says, the term means “empowerment through choice. A previvor is someone who chooses to take action in order to gain some level of control and comfort that she will preempt an illness that would otherwise have jeopardized her life.” And as she lives comfortably in the knowledge that she has drastically reduced her risk of breast cancer, she plans to eventually educate her two children – one of whom is a girl – about the role their genetics may play in their own health journeys.

When did you first consider getting tested for the BRCA1 gene mutation?

I learned that my mom was positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation in the early 1990s. I was in my 20s at that time. I was not yet married, and I was unprepared to take drastic measures in response to a possible positive test result. Because I didn’t want to spend years thinking about what would be inevitable surgeries, I made a conscious decision to wait to test for the mutation until I was done having children. I was 33 when my second child was born and 34 when I tested positive for the gene. I then decided to take a calculated risk and wait until I was 40 to have the surgery. I just wasn’t ready to face it yet.

How did you ultimately arrive at the decision to have a double mastectomy?

I never considered not having the surgery. Of course, I didn’t want to have it; I dreaded it. But given the statistics and my family’s personal history, I felt certain that I would get ovarian and/or breast cancer if I opted not to have surgery. In that way, the decision was easy. I believe surgery was my key to survival.

What resources and support helped you before and after your surgery?

I sought out counsel from other young women who had chosen preventative surgery, including Lindsay Avner at Bright Pink (www.brightpink.org), which is a wonderful resource for young women who are at high risk for breast/ovarian cancer. I read books written by women who had experienced the surgery – “Pretty is What Changes” by Jessica Queller was fantastic. I talked to my aunts and cousins who had experienced it. My husband and my friends were also fully supportive of my decision. I was lucky to have a huge support system.

What was the recovery process like?

From an emotional perspective, I felt a huge sense of relief and empowerment as soon as I woke up from my first surgery. I didn’t expect that. Knowing that I took control of my destiny and faced a life-changing surgery in order to ward off cancer made me feel strong. Physically, the recovery from surgery was less challenging than I expected.

What is your risk of breast cancer now, if any?

I believe my risk of breast cancer was reduced by 95 percent.

Do you plan to address the topic of genetic testing with your children?

Absolutely. My children know about my surgery, but I haven’t spent much time explaining to them why I had it or what that means for them. They are still relatively young, and I don’t want them to spend time worrying about something that they aren’t ready to address.

What words of advice or encouragement do you have for women in the position you were? What about women who are actively fighting the disease?

As a previvor and a member of the board of Komen Atlanta, I hope that National Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds women everywhere that they must take charge of their health. Be proactive and take advantage of access to breast screening and breast care. Choose knowledge over fear and stay strong. And to those women actively fighting the disease, you go girl! It’s a tough slog, but you can do it. Allow your friends and family to rally around you and provide you the much-needed support. Always stay positive.
