Did You Know? A sudden, strong urge to pass urine, urinating eight or more times per day, and getting up at least twice each night to go to the bathroom can be symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). OAB occurs when a miscommunication between the bladder and the nervous system causes the bladder muscles to contract at a time other than when one wishes to urinate. OAB can also be associated with urine leakage. There is no known cause. OAB is very common and can affect anyone at any age. An estimated 34 million people have the condition. Many people “just live with it “ - but the good news is that OAB is a treatable medical condition. The various treatment options are highly successful and often very straightforward.

If you would like to learn more about OAB treatment options, call and schedule an appointment at one of our 30 convenient office locations.

Tens of millions of people suffer from allergies because their immune systems are overly sensitive to pollen, dust mites, foods or other substances called allergens. The good news is that you don’t have to suffer needlessly. A combination of awareness, prevention and treatment can help you enjoy life more fully. Most allergic diseases are highly treatable, and with simple lifestyle changes, you can minimize the misery and even live Allergy-Free.

Free eBook!

We’re Turning Five! Living healthy and aging well are passions of mine. I spent years developing the concept for Best Self Atlanta with the goal of creating a platform where people interested in living their best life could connect with like-minded others as well as the expert resources in Atlanta. So when I launched the magazine five years ago, I thought I was well prepared and knew what to expect. What I didn’t know was that I was about to embark on a journey that would test me as a business owner and teach me some life lessons about pushing past my limits. As the saying goes, “Anything worth having is worth working hard for.” With this business, working hard has been just the tip of the iceberg. To meet the changing needs of today’s business owners, Best Self required a complete reinvention of a business concept I had developed and perfected over the last 20 years. Thanks to that reinvention and an intense desire to succeed, we did not just survive in the worst economy since the Great Depression – we have thrived. And after five years, we are better in every way thanks to my incredible staff, our readers and advertising partners. In addition, this experience has made me a better business owner, and more importantly, a better person. I have learned so many new things and proven to myself that I can still grow, change and improve. Now, it’s time to celebrate! Follow us on Facebook to learn all about the festivities for our fifth anniversary in April. Check out the photo album of all our past covers and tell us your favorites. We may just feature them in our anniversary issue! All the best,

Selecting the right cosmetic dentist can be a difficult and confusing process,

How would you define a toxic relationship? Any relationship in which you feel increasingly bad about yourself. I define it in terms of personal perception rather than behavior because toxicity can be delivered in passive aggressive doses and is hard to recognize as destructive. Why do people allow toxic relationships in their lives? Masochism (having expectations that are pathologically low) is a major one and frequently accompanied by the misguided and delusional belief that toxic people, if sufficiently pleased, will become loving and accepting. What is your advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life? Cessation of contact: the exit review, if held at all, is best if brief and kept to statement of fact. Accusing will fall on emotionally deaf ears and leave you feeling less good. Ask for change, but if it doesn’t occur, exit rapidly. Where can people go for support? Seek out healthy people around you who have seen the relationship in action. Spiritual and therapeutic support are also good choices, as well as reading every book you can find on building self-worth.

How would you define a toxic relationship? An unhealthy situation that exists between two or more people. It has potential to cause mental, physical, emotional, financial and even sexual harm. What are the pitfalls of allowing a toxic relationship to continue? It can cause a decrease in self-esteem, turmoil in other relationships, depression and health problems. Why do people allow toxic relationships in their lives? Some people allow toxic relationships for the comfort of having someone around as a quick fix for loneliness. Some have associated toxic behavior with relationships since they were younger, due to being exposed to this behavior from their parents. What is your advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life? Make up in your mind that you really want out. Then create a plan, including a support system to remove yourself in the safest way possible. Once removed, take the appropriate time to evaluate your past and understand your pattern of choosing the partners you choose so you won’t make the same mistakes in the future.

How would you define a toxic relationship? Toxic relationships are draining, stressful and inauthentic. These are relationships that do not allow people to be truly open and honest. They sadly rob you of the freedom to be yourself. What are the pitfalls of allowing a toxic relationship to continue? By allowing a dysfunctional relationship to continue, you set yourself up to endure an ongoing series of emotionally painful experiences. What is your advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life? Begin by admitting that you are participating in a toxic relationship to yourself and to others you trust. Admitting it is the first step in taking the power away from the relationship and separating yourself from it. The next step is to create a positive plan for moving forward. Where can people go for support? Seek the help of neutral professionals like counselors, life coaches, matchmakers and clergy. Experts who do not know you intimately are able to give honest and objective advice about your situation as well as the tools necessary for change.

How would you define a toxic relationship? A toxic relationship is any relationship that is very negative in nature and drains your energy rather than boosts it. What are the pitfalls of allowing a toxic relationship to continue? The subconscious mind is always listening and recording everything, so a toxic relationship can cause you to act out negatively in future relationships. Why do people allow toxic relationships in their lives? People allow toxic relationships in their lives because of the fear of letting go of the relationship. What is your advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life? My advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life is that it is always best to deal with the problem and understand why you are attracting negative energy into your life. Where can people go for support? One of the best supports for people in a toxic relationship is prayer and meditation. Prayer affects the subconscious and allows deep emotional healing if asked for.

How would you define a toxic relationship? A toxic relationship is usually about a controller and a controllee. There is likely an unequal power dynamic that makes one party feel trapped. What are the pitfalls of allowing a toxic relationship to continue? The pitfalls of staying in a toxic relationship is that there is a daily wearing away of the soul. Why might people allow toxic relationships in their lives? When we are in the pattern, we can’t see the pattern. It’s a familiar way of existing. What is your advice for removing a toxic relationship from your life? Identifying the level of toxicity is the first step to removing a toxic relationship from your life. Are you afraid of this person? Do you lie? Does addressing an issue become a war? Is the relationship “my way or the highway”? Do you not have many friends? Does this person bring out your best self? Wheel Be Back

Since 1969, Peachtree Bikes has been providing the cycling community with services and events to keep them pedaling. In December of last year, their Buckhead location was destroyed by a fire that consumed the store. Customers have been venturing to their Sandy Springs and Serenbe stores, but this month, they are making their return at a new Buckhead location. This spot is conveniently in the same area of town as the prior location.

Pick of the Month Tea for Two I recently had the privilege of visiting our hometown tea company, Teavana, and the tasting room inside their Buckhead headquarters where I spent the afternoon learning about and tasting tea. Tea is a delicious and healthy beverage, but if you aren’t sure it’s for you, stop by any Teavana store and sample their loose tea. The multitude of tea leaf flavors and combinations offer endless choices. I recommend the Silver Needle White Tea for its smooth flavor. Also, CocoCaramel Sea Salt Herbal is the perfect no-calorie treat that will satisfy a sweet tooth and is my personal favorite. As the newest member of the Starbucks family,Teavana plans to reinvent the way we enjoy tea. It is rumored that tea will soon rival coffee and tea bars will be as popular as coffee shops. If you collect star rewards on your Starbucks card, you’ll be happy to know the card is now accepted at Teavana stores. www.teavana.com Jessica Dauler For more info visit www.bestselfconnect.com For more info on Jessica visit www.jessicashops.com BEST SELF ATLANTA

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Gearing Up to Cook Chef George Geary, a bestselling cookbook author and former pastry chef for the Walt Disney Co., is bringing his talents to The Cook’s Warehouse later this month. If you sign up for his three upcoming classes, you’ll learn how to make homemade sauces and bruschetta, French appetizers and a variety of barbecue dishes. In addition to all of those skills, Chef Geary says his students will learn how to be more confident in the kitchen. “If you mess up, we can fix it. Just don’t tell who you are cooking for – they didn’t know what you were making in the first place!” This jovial attitude keeps Chef Geary’s classes light and fun, as well as educational. He encourages budding cooks to get a good set of pans, take classes and try new recipes as much as possible. And if the recipes you try are from his cookbooks, that’s even better. Geary has authored cookbooks on everything from cheesecake to salads to biscuits, and he says, “I love seeing people come back over and over and using my cookbooks!” Sign up for any of his three classes on March 27 in Midtown, March 28 in East Cobb or March 29 in Decatur, and start honing your culinary skills. Classes are $60 to $75.

Take the Scenic Route

Star Gazing

When you’re stuck in traffic, it may be hard to appreciate the beauty and landmarks of our city. Get a different perspective by joining Atlanta Running Tours on three-mile or six-mile group runs that take you jogging past fun areas of the city. Tour guide Kristy Duckworth will point out Atlanta facts and history as you pass landmarks like the CNN Center, the state capitol, the World of Coke, the Aquarium and the Fox Theatre. Each tour includes a T-shirt, water, snack and digital photos taken throughout the tour that will be emailed to you afterward. $35 for three miles, $50 for six miles.

As the stars take the red carpet for the Oscars this year on March 2, you can feel like a celebrity yourself at the Red Carpet Gala held at Cobb Galleria Centre. This glamorous event, which benefits the Center for Family Resources, will include a live and silent auction, dancing, games, a live performance by the Male Vocalist and Crooner of the Year, Douglas Cameron and – of course – a viewing of the 86th annual Academy Awards. Single tickets are $150. Details: www.cfrredcarpetgala.com

Q

I’ve been on birth control pills for five years. How long do I have to wait after stopping the pill to try for pregnancy and how long will it take to get pregnant? The overall effect of the pill is to suppress ovulation, but the hormones in the pill don’t stay in the system beyond a day. This means you can start trying immediately after stopping the pill, but it will take about a week of no pill to allow the potential for ovulation and therefore pregnancy. If your cycle is regular after stopping the pill, your most fertile cycle will be the second one after you stop the pill. If you have six regular cycles and are not successful with getting pregnant, see your gynecologist.

Do “natural” joint supplements, such as fish oil, that are advertised and sold in stores actually work to help alleviate joint pain? Only a few “natural” joint supplements have ever been scientifically investigated. The majority of available data is on chondroitin and glucosamine. Some studies show a reduction of osteoarthritis pain with their use, while other studies show no effect. I recommend a three-month trial of chondroitin and glucosamine to my patients who don’t have certain allergies or other medical conditions.

How do you fix stretched earlobes? Decreasing the risk of stretched earlobes begins with proper piercing height. A low piercing will stretch the earlobe over time. However, a properly placed piercing with a heavy earring will also cause stretching. Tight earrings can contribute to decreased earlobe volume (there is a fat pad in the earlobe), and the earlobe stretches naturally as aging occurs. Treatment options include filler injection with Restylane or Juvederm, re-piercing higher, or an earlobe reduction procedure, also known as an earlobe lift. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia Mike Majmundar, MD where the earlobe is repositioned and a small amount of extra skin is removed. Northside Facial Cosmetic Surgery

This grounded attitude served Blais well throughout the twists and turns of his career. He graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in New York, but his first job was at McDonald’s. Then he rose from that role to become one of the most recognizable winners of Bravo’s “Top Chef AllStars” in 2010. His biggest takeaway from being on “Top Chef ” is “Improv, in anything, is a great skill to have.” Blais honed his creative culinary skills next to notable chefs such as Thomas Keller, Grant Achatz, Daniel Boulud and Ferran Adria before making his way to Atlanta in 2000 to run a seafood kitchen. Then in 2004, he opened BLAIS Restaurant. Although this venture was short lived, closing its doors after six months, Blais was undeterred and continued to forge ahead. He

went on to work in other restaurants such as One Midtown Kitchen and opened his own company, TrailBlais. This culinary consultant company allowed him to partner with FLIP Burger Boutique, for which he helped create the menu. Then in October 2012, Blais opened The Spence in partnership with Concentrics Hospitality. Blais’ culinary creativity is evident if you’ve ever dined in one of his Atlanta eateries. As each restaurant evolved, Blais learned what worked and what didn’t. “I continue to learn how difficult they are, what a hard life it is for restaurant workers, and I continue to ask ‘Why do people open restaurants?’” For Blais, the answer evidently seems to be for the love of cooking because he shows no signs of slowing down.

Get to Know Chef Blais

What advice do you have for someone who is struggling to lose weight? Have small goals and realize it’s mostly mental. Controlling what you eat or cook or buy is the first decision to make.

What is your favorite way to stay fit?

I run maniacally and recently started swimming. But right now, trail running is my jam.

Best advice for parents who need some inspiration for weekly dinners?

Cook vegetables, always make a salad, and get your family and kids involved in meal planning, preparation and cooking.

Best book you’ve read?

I’m a big Malcolm Gladwell fan. Photo by Willett Photography, Inc.

Best place in Atlanta to relax? Piedmont Park.

Favorite restaurant?

The Spence or Bacchanalia Star Provisions.

Who are the people that help you be your best self?

My wife is my consultant in all things. Mind you, she is a yoga-practicing, organic-vegetable-shopping, vegetarian consultant. www.bestselfconnect.com

In addition to another restaurant project, Juniper & Ivy, which opened last month in San Diego, Blais took on another TV gig in December 2013. Along with co-host and nutritionist Keri Glassman, Blais now hosts HLN’s Upwave network show, “Cook Your Ass Off.” This show pits chefs against each other in a race against the clock to create dishes that “balance the nutritious with the delicious” for a cash prize of $50,000. “I was stoked to hear of the premise [of the show]. Being that health and wellness have become so important to me, it was a perfect fit,” Blais says. “The message is that you can cook and eat delicious food that is still good for you. I think ‘Cook Your Ass Off’ can help change lives.” Staying fit and cooking healthy are topics that are now near and dear to Blais, who once weighed in at 225 pounds. When speaking to HLN on this subject, Blais admitted, “I just really lost control of myself because I was tasting food all day long.” Blais confesses his journey to losing the pounds started with “wanting to get a girl.” The “girl” was his now-wife Jazmin, who helped motivate him to get moving. They began running together and after several months of training, Blais competed in the Peachtree Road Race for the first time. At the end of the race, he proposed to her, and they’ve been together ever since. He also credits his two daughters for helping him stay on track. “Well, [at first] I didn’t consider nutrition or exercise, so the biggest changes were to make sure they were a part of my daily life. My kids certainly have helped too, because I want to feed them healthy meals.” Although Blais says the food he eats now is usually healthy, he does sometimes indulge in “chicken wings, cheeseburgers and ice cream like everyone else!” Blais acknowledges that it was a challenge to keep the weight off, but he learned, “It’s a marathon not a sprint, BEST SELF ATLANTA

It’s been a long journey since making Filet-O-Fish sandwiches at McDonald’s, and Blais has learned a lot along the way. He shares some advice with aspiring chefs, saying, “You will most likely make minimum money for six to 10 years, working holidays, all while spinning around in the same five-foot space for each 12-hour day. You will get burned, cut and smell like burning wood and garlic for a long time. You will most likely lose most of your existing friends and most certainly your boyfriend or girlfriend. You in?”

so once you feel comfortable with that, it’s all gravy. Mind you, it’s a glutenfree gravy!”

Meet Co-Host Keri Glassman As a nutritionist, owner of New York-based practice Nutritious Life, and co-host of the new show “Cook Your Ass Off,” Keri is passionate about teaching people to “reach beyond a healthful diet and take a whole person approach to health and wellness, both inside and out.”

Atlanta’s first meal delivery company dedicated solely to the production of hCG Meals for use on the hCG Simmeon’s Diet Protocol. We will deliver your meals the next day to your front door or you may pick them up at one of our convenient locations (below).

What was your reaction when you heard about the premise of “Cook Your Ass Off”? I thought “I love this idea! How has it not been done before?” People seek out health information everywhere, and people love cooking competitions. Yet the concept of adding the health element to the competition had never been done. My passion is teaching health, so I fell in love with this format.

What is your best piece of advice for someone who is struggling to lose weight?

I would say the thing that has the greatest impact without changing anything else is learning to listen to your body — stopping eating when slightly satisfied and eating when slightly hungry. nd eating as much real food as possible.

What is your favorite healthy dish to cook?

My go-to healthy meal that my kids can’t get enough of is baked wild salmon with sesame crust, burnt broccoli and quinoa. Super simple, super healthy, and I always know it is well received.

ome women welcome it. Some women are wary of it. Everyone’s talking about it because all women go through it: menopause. This biological change is every bit as natural as puberty, yet menopause is often misunderstood and involves more symptoms and treatment options than you can make sense of. But by educating yourself about the available treatments and some common sense lifestyle adjustments, you can make this transition more easily than you might expect. You may find out that, just like your favorite wine, you keep getting better with age.

Menopause Defined The word “menopause” comes from two Greek roots meaning “month” and “a cessation.” So in its most basic form, menopause means the ending of your monthly cycles. Allison Cochran, a physician assistant with New Vitality Medical Institute, gives the technical definition: “A woman is considered to be in menopause once her menstrual periods have ceased for 12 months.” If the process of menopause were truly that simple – no more periods, cramps, chocolate cravings or spontaneous sappy movie marathons – women would surely welcome the change. Unfortunately, menopause can bring with it a whole slew of new symptoms. “Some of the most common are hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and difficulty sleeping,” says Sheila V. Garnica, MD, a NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner with North Fulton Women’s Specialists. “However, some women may also experience fatigue, irritability, anxiety, vaginal dryness and weight gain.” Suddenly, “no more periods” doesn’t sound so fun.

Menopause Around the World Menopause symptoms vary by person, of course, but also by culture. UK-based medical doctor and public health specialist Elinor Thompson rounded up a variety of studies proving that menopause and its symptoms are different around the world.

“I’m staying 39 for as long as I can.”

YOU, ONLY YOUNGER.

Most of us wish we could slow down the effects aging has on our looks – and maybe even get a few years back in the process. Fraxel® is proven laser technology that helps reverse the visible effects of aging, naturally helping you look as young as you feel. With Fraxel, change isn’t drastic or scary – it’s you, just younger. Smoother, fresher, younger looking skin Improved skin tone & texture Erasing of unwanted brown spots

In JAPAN, women frequently attribute shoulder stiffness to the change.

Reduced fine lines & wrinkles Improved appearance of acne and surgical scars

In CHINA, women complain more of numbness in their hands than o hot ashes. In INDIA, most women report no symptoms other than menstrual changes.

JORdAnA S. GilMAn, M.d. fraxel expert Dr. Gilman is an expert in the use of the Fraxel® Dual laser and performs this procedure at Dermatology Center of Atlanta. Dr. Gilman is often consulted by local & national print and television media for her expert opinion on medical advancements in dermatology and new aesthetic trends & procedures. She has appeared on Dr. Oz, Fox News Channel, WebMD and MSNBC.

Cause of the Pause “A woman’s body goes into menopause when her ovaries stop producing estrogen, the hormone that controls the reproductive cycle,” Cochran says. The slowed production and eventual lack of estrogen are responsible for the symptoms associated with menopause. In America, the average age of menopause is 51, though women often experience changes several years before, during the years known as perimenopause. However, if you are younger than 40 and are experiencing menopausal symptoms, your body might be getting a little ahead of itself. Premature ovarian failure can occur for a variety of reasons. “Chemotherapy and radiation are common causes of toxin-induced ovarian failure. Another possible cause is an autoimmune disease where the immune system may produce antibodies against one’s own ovarian tissue,” Cochran says. She also notes, “Smoking can contribute to early menopause due to the antiestrogen effects it has.” In addition to cancer treatments and lifestyle factors, Piedmont OB/ GYN Melissa Counihan, MD, states that genetic disorders such as Fragile X or Turner’s Syndrome can contribute to premature menopause, as can surgical removal of the ovaries.

Treatment Options In centuries past, women’s physical development and changes were grossly misunderstood and were often treated as mental health issues. As medical understanding of hormones grew throughout the 1900s, treatments became more appropriate to the biological changes of menopause. By the 1960s, the go-to treatment was hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which was thought to help prevent coronary artery disease as well as help manage menopause symptoms. Today, Dr. Counihan explains, “Since the Women’s Health Initiative study was published, we have come to have a better understanding

exercise “Byintoincorporating your daily routine, natural endorphins can promote weight loss, boost your energy and improve sleep patterns.

of the risks of HRT. We believe there are risks associated with estrogen-containing therapy such as blood clots, stroke and breast cancer.” As recently as 2010, the National Institutes of Health and the Women’s Health Initiative have analyzed this type of treatment and reported “a trend toward an increased risk of heart disease during the first two years of hormone therapy among women.” To try to minimize those risks, Dr. Garnica says, hormone therapy has gone through significant changes. “The most important has been the individualization of hormone therapy and the shift to limiting the dosage of HRT to the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time.” In addition to these changes, Dr. Counihan says, “We now have medications available in various delivery systems including oral pills or patches, sprays or gels that are applied to the skin.” She also adds that another way to minimize your intake of estrogen-containing compounds is to treat symptoms with some of the same medications that typically treat depression. Sharon Bent-Harley, MD, of the Harley AntiAging Institute notes that bio-identical pellet therapy is a breakthrough for the modern woman dealing with menopause symptoms.

This hormone treatment, she explains, “is made from wild yams, and the treatment lasts anywhere from three months to one year without having to remember to take a tablet or apply a cream every day.” Though the research is not new, today’s busy women are increasingly taking advantage of this option. Make sure to discuss all of these options with your doctor to be sure you’re receiving the most appropriate treatment.

Help Yourself at Home If the medical approach is not for you, Dr. Garnica points out, “There are many non-pharmacologic alternatives and non-hormonal therapies as well.” One recommendation is to keep a close watch on your diet. “There are a few common food triggers for hot flashes that all women should avoid if hot flashes are problematic: spicy foods, alcohol and caffeine,” Dr. Garnica says. “It is helpful to keep a food diary and note if a particular food triggers a hot flash.” Fonda Mitchell, MD, Chief of Women’s Services at Kaiser Permanente agrees that diet has a large impact on your experience of menopause, as does your activity level. “By focusing on a diet high in fiber and calcium, menopausal women can ensure healthy bones and a healthy digestive system. By incorporating exercise into your daily routine, natural endorphins can promote weight loss, boost your energy and improve sleep patterns.”

Start the Conversation Dr. Garnica encourages open dialogue, especially with your doctor. “Don’t be shy about discussing the symptoms that are most bothersome, whether it is painful intercourse, dry skin, loss of interest in sex, heart palpitations, increased anxiety or fatigue,” she says. Dr. Mitchell recommends another topic to cover with your doctor: contraception. “Until menopause is confirmed (more than 12 months without a period or by a blood test), women should understand they can still get pregnant,” she says. If you don’t currently have a doctor who you feel comfortable speaking with about these topics, look for a provider from the American Academy of AntiAging Medicine. Cochran says medical providers who are board-certified from this academy have undergone extensive training in age-management medicine and will be able to address your needs. You can also find support through the Red Hot Mamas online forums, where women take to the keyboards to discuss every angle of this transition. Online resources are also available from the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the North American Menopause Society. There’s no doubt that women are all in this together. In 2001, Jeanie Linders created “Menopause The Musical” to convey just that. In this musical, an all-female cast humorously reworks familiar tunes to reflect women’s shared experiences about menopause.“Stayin’ Alive” becomes “Stayin’

Menopause The Musical stars Becca McCoy, Valerie Mackey, Sandra Benton and Rebecca Fisher

Awake,” along with “Puff, My God I’m Dragging,” and “Change, Change, Change.” Women have laughed their way through this show in 450 U.S. cities and 15 countries, proving that no one is alone on this journey. Linders says that, after watching the show, audience members “know what they are experiencing is normal. They aren’t alone or crazy. It becomes a sisterhood.” Whether or not you can look at menopause humorously yet, it’s helpful to have a positive attitude about the transition. While your body makes these changes, you can make changes of your own: make self-care a top priority by eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise and meeting with a supportive doctor who can address your needs. With all of these resources, you can start to view menopause as a new beginning and a new opportunity to make these years the healthiest yet.

besthealth Knee & Shoulder Pain: When To See Your Doctor By Evander Fogle, MD

The knees and shoulders are two very important and active parts of the body, making them prone to all types of minor ailments. If not treated promptly and properly, minor problems can turn into major ones. Make sure you know when to seek treatment for all levels of knee and shoulder pain and how to take care of these joints.

Do you really have time to wait for hours in the ER?

Shoulders can be a finicky joint. Because of the many joints, tendons and muscles involved, minor injuries can frequently cause significant pain and disability. Often, shoulder pain will respond well to a short period of anti-inflammatory medication and “shoulder-friendly” activities, such as avoiding reaching above shoulder level or farther back than the chest.

Have you ever come back from a long walk, developed pain in your knee and wondered what to do? Realizing that your knee hurts is the easy part, but determining whether you need an orthopaedic evaluation may not be as straightforward. For most sudden injuries to the 1:09 PM knee, the resulting pain can be managed with a short period of anti-inflammatory medication and RICE — rest, ice, compression and elevation. If the knee cannot RICE — rest, ice, bear your full weight soon compression and elevation after the injury, a trip to the orthopaedist’s office would be advised. Chronic knee pain, such as from arthritis, can respond well to the treatments outlined above. If it does not, a doctor’s visit with X-rays is in order. Additionally, pain that is worse at night or lasts more than a few weeks without improvement should prompt a visit to the doctor.

Why go to an emergency room and wait for hours for non-life threatening problems? At NGUC, appointments are never necessary but always welcome for routine physicals or follow-up visits. Most of our patients are those with an unexpected illness or injury.

If your shoulder pain persists more than a few weeks, wakes you up at night or is accompanied by difficulty lifting your arm overhead, your best bet would be to see your doctor for an evaluation. www.bestselfconnect.com

TMJ Jaw Pain? Popping & Clicking? Therapeutic Injection combination therapy may be your answer! Do you have Jaw pain or clicking when you chew or have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? This could be a temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) problem. Other symptoms include shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches. TMJ problems are often accompanied by cervical and TMJ ligament laxity. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Bio-therapeutic injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the TMJ joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to re-align the joints will often solve this problem. Call the offices of Total HealthCare to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced medical professionals today if you are experiencing these symptoms.

Answers for Your Allergies By Eugene S. Hurwitz, MD, FAAAAI

Make a colon cancer screening appointment today.

What key symptoms indicate an allergy? Allergies can affect the body in many ways, but a key symptom is itching. For those with respiratory allergies, they may have watery, itchy eyes and nose, as well as congestion, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Allergies can cause eczema and hives as well.

F. Edward LeVert, M.D. Dimple Raina, M.D. Long B. Nguyen, D.O. Brian Hudes, M.D. Medical Director

Why is Atlanta a hotbed for allergy sufferers? Atlanta’s climate is ideal for plants that trigger allergies, including trees in the spring, weeds in the fall and grasses in the summer. In addition, dust mites thrive in humidity, as does mold. Atlanta and the Southeast are always among the leading allergy areas in the country. How have treatments evolved in the last five years? Allergy shots are highly effective for treating allergies. More recently, allergy drops have become available, which can be given at home and are more convenient. There will soon be allergy tablets available for grass allergies; however, most people in Atlanta have multiple allergic triggers, and the tablets may not control all their allergies.

What preventative steps can you take? Avoidance of indoor allergies may include dust mite control measures, washing bedding in hot water, using dust miteproof covers for the pillows and mattress and minimizing dust-collecting items in the bedroom. Controlling mold and keeping animals out of the bedroom (or the house) may be helpful. It is difficult to avoid exposure to outdoor allergens.

What foods or vitamins can you add to your diet to strengthen your sinuses? A good diet may be helpful. There is recent evidence that people with vitamin D deficiency may have more problems with allergies. How do you choose a qualified doctor? What credentials should they have? If you are undertaking a treatment plan for allergies, it is important to see a board-certified allergist. They are the only specialists who are trained specifically in allergy care. How can symptoms be managed? Allergy shots administered by board-certified allergists can reduce symptoms by 80 to 90 percent and give patients long-term relief. www.bestselfconnect.com

besthealth Self-Care for Caregivers By David Martin, RN, CRNFA Healthcare workers usually have incredibly stressful lives, and caring for ourselves often takes the back burner. I know because I am a nurse and have been in healthcare for more than 35 years. Nurses and physicians are on our feet a lot. We work strange hours, especially emergency room, on-call and night shift nurses and physicians. Irregular sleep patterns make it more challenging for some of us to exercise and make the best food choices. A surgeon associate of mine said it best: “Just because I am a surgeon does not mean I am immune to health problems.” As he neared the age of 50, this avid runner noticed his running times were off and his legs felt heavy. He wisely chose to be tested for venous reflux disease, the condition wherein delicate one-way valves in the legs fail, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the veins. A simple ultrasound scan showed significant reflux. A series of in-office procedures soon had him enjoying his races again and gave him new insights into how easily healthcare professionals can ignore or diminish the importance of our own symptoms. As a takeaway, whether you’re a healthcare professional or a busy parent, please make time to notice how you’re feeling. Know the warning signs of stroke, heart attack and cancer, and pay attention to them for yourself as well as your loved ones and patients. You can’t be a great caregiver if you don’t first take care of yourself. www.bestselfconnect.com

An Amenity-Rich Community for Seniors Why is it important for seniors to have so many options and activities in an independent living community and/ or assisted living community? Research shows us that attitude plays a huge role in a healthy and active lifestyle for seniors. It is our goal to help our residents maintain their independence and positivity by offering numerous activities that strengthen their mind, body and spirit.

Can you describe some of the amenities you offer? Our community is much like an active cruise ship. We have the Starlight Theatre where residents enjoy live entertainment and movies. Our state-of-the-art fitness wing provides group fitness and one-on-one personal training. In addition to multiple dining options, residents enjoy our Essentials Spa/Salon, Vine Wine Bar, concierge services and private transportation via limousine, town car or luxury bus.

How do you manage to keep an independent living community “fun”? At Renaissance on Peachtree, we love to party! Our calendar stays full of fun parties, events, speakers, shows, socials and clubs. We recently had a ‘50s inspired party complete with live music, ice-cream floats and lots of dancing. We also hosted a casino night with real slot machines, authentic dealers and table games and a Frank Sinatra impersonator.

What sets you apart from other communities in the Atlanta market? We often hear from residents and family members that our staff is what makes our community so wonderful and inviting and creates a true sense of community. Several of our department heads -including transportation, housekeeping, and dining services - have been with us for over 20 years. Everyone who works at Renaissance on Peachtree has a genuine love for seniors, and it shows in everything we do.

How is the Renaissance on Peachtree different from a typical independent or assisted living community? At Renaissance on Peachtree, our residents have an abundance of choices every day. Our daily-changing calendar is full of exciting social, cultural, educational and recreational activities designed to challenge our residents in every way. We offer multiple dining options including all-day fine dining in the Brookhaven restaurant or a quick bite at Pemberton Café, so our residents can enjoy delicious and healthy food on their own schedules.

Robotic Hair Restoration Arrives in Atlanta

‘Tis the Season Important Tax Documents Arrive

Millions of Americans suffer from hair loss. Today, there are many more options for treatment of balding and thinning hair than ever before. Long gone is the “pluggy” or “doll’s hair” look, as modern hair transplantation is performed one single follicle at a time for the most natural look possible.

The documents you need to file an accurate tax return depends on your personal finances and they may vary from year to year based on life changes, like going to college, getting married and having a baby. Also, be on the lookout for emails from financial institutions, brokers and others notifying you that tax documents are available via their website.

The Anderson Hair Sciences Center is a new, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing the most natural, permanent hair restoration results to both men and women, with an emphasis on artistic concepts, patient comfort, and natural, permanent results.

Self-employment information • Forms 1099-MISC • Schedules K-1

Dr. Ken Anderson, MD, is the first and only hair restoration surgeon in Georgia to offer the very latest in cutting edge surgical robotic devices. The ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration Surgery System performs a type of hair restoration surgery called “follicular unit extraction,” or “FUE” – a technique Dr. Anderson has been performing for over 10 years. With the revolutionary ARTAS System Dr. Anderson is able to transplant hair without any linear or noticeable scarring, using no scalpels, no stitches, with a dramatically shorter recovery period than for patients who undergo a traditional linear strip method hair restoration procedure. With the sole exception of the ARTAS system, all FUE methods, using any device, are performed by hand, with all the associated variability and inherent human error. How Does It Work? Using high-tech stereoscopic cameras, and updating its coordinates 5,000 times per second, the ARTAS System’s image-guided robotics harvests hair follicles for transplant with micron-level precision, one at a time. As there is no linear incision required with an ARTAS procedure, healing time is short, and you can usually go back to your daily activities after a day or two. call for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Anderson to discuss your options, or visit us online.

The following is a partial list of tax-related documents to keep an eye out for in mailboxes – traditional and electronic – in the next couple months. Employee wages • W-2

Retirement income • Pension/IRA/annuity income (1099-R) • Social security/RRB income (1099-SSA, RRB-1099) Other income • Unemployment compensation (depending on state) • State tax refund (1099-G) • Gambling income (W-2G) • Health care reimbursements (1099-SA or 1099-LTC) Savings and investments • Interest income, dividend income (1099-INT, 1099-OID, 1099-DIV) • Income from sales of stock, mutual funds or other property (1099-B, 1099-S) Education • Tuition charged or billed and scholarships received (Form 1098-T) • Student loan interest statement (Form 1098-E) • Distributions from 529 plan or Coverdell Education Savings Account (Form 1099-Q) Itemized deductions • Mortgage interest statements (Form 1098) • Receipts for state/local income tax paid (other than wage withholding) • Receipts for real estate and personal taxes paid Need somewhere to store important tax-related documents? My H&R Block is a free, online “filing cabinet” that gives taxpayers a place to store their tax-related documents so they have easy access to them for tax prep, checkups and planning year-round. My H&R Block also makes it easy to view and print past returns, and check e-file status. For more information about filing an accurate tax return, contact a local H&R Block tax professional.

www.atlantagastro.com/pediatrics

What are the features of RLS? There are 4 cardinal features: 1. Urge to move the legs, accompanied by an uncomfortable sensation in the legs. 2. The restlessness begins or worsens during periods of inactivity. 3. The restlessness is partially or totally relieved by movement. 4. The symptoms start or worsen in the evening hours or night.

Don’t be shy, call The Renaissance on Peachtree Retirement Community now to schedule your tour. Next thing you know, you’ll be saying, “Honey, we should’ve moved in years ago!”

How does RLS affect sleep? Insomnia is a common problem. RLS may be the cause of difficulty in initiating sleep due to leg discomfort. It can also interfere with returning to sleep after an awakening during the night. Many people with RLS have frequent kicking movements in sleep, called periodic limb movements (PLMs), which can also disrupt sleep. What are the causes of RLS? Many patients have a family history. It can also be seen with pregnancy, iron deficiency or with kidney problems. How is RLS diagnosed? Diagnosis of RLS is based on clinical history. An overnight sleep study may be needed to diagnose periodic limb movements in sleep. How is RLS treated? Several medications are effective for RLS and can be prescribed by your neurologist or sleep physician. Swapan Dholakia, MD

Is Our Modern World Toxic?

EXPERT CONNECT

What is Your Number? Many people I meet have gone through the years saving what their cash flow allowed without having a goal. How much money do you need to achieve your financial independence (Achieving financial independence means reaching retirement with the option of working but you no longer have to work)? How do you figure out that number? I was at a professional continuing education seminar and the speaker said “I don’t know my number, do you?” This took me off guard. In a room full of financial planners, I would hope we all know our number. The speaker did not, do you?

The evidence is overwhelming. Toxins are everywhere, in our water, air, food, soaps, shampoos, even in the clothes we wear. We read about mercury in our fish, jet fuel in our lettuce, and heavy metals in our air. Our bodies carry a chemical cocktail of industrial chemicals, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, and residues of many pharmaceuticals, as well as toxins from alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and illegal drugs. Colon Hydrotherapy can help to minimize the effects of toxins and environmental stresses that can lead to imbalances in the immune system. The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT) protocol suggests: Week 1 & 2 = two sessions per week and Weeks 3 to 10 = one session per week. Our trained therapists can help you to determine the best number of sessions for your unique needs. We believe Colon Hydrotherapy, supported by a proper diet, water, exercise, and stress management can accelerate the healing potential of your body. In her book Detox or Die by Dr Sherry Rogers, MD says toxicity is like a one-way street leading to disease; the key to healing is to reverse the toxicity. Dr Rogers suggests some of the best ways to detoxify are through Colon Hydrotherapy and Infrared Sauna. Atlanta Colonic & Massage offers the best in Colon Hydrotherapy and Infrared Sauna Therapy in the Atlanta area. Our modern world is toxic; a problem that is not going away anytime soon. Cleansing is no longer just an option, it is a necessity!

There are certain factors that you need to include like inflation, your current spending, and extraordinary expenses (for example, if you have a special needs child that may be dependent on you for life). There are some free online calculators to help you run numbers if you do not have a financial advisor and do not wish to retain one. One website that can give you a general idea, though it is basic, is http:// www.dinkytown.com/java/RetirementPlan3.html. Fee-based financial advisors will usually run these calculations for you for a fee but they include more detail and conversation. I recommend to my clients that we run the first financial independence scenario in a conservative manner (4% inflation, 5% growth on investments during financial independence, using the same spending as they spend today). I have found that many clients do not downsize their spending, they just shift their spending from the mortgages on their homes to travel, golf, or something more fun than paying a mortgage – or sometimes they need to use it on health care). Depending on my clients’ age(s), I may exclude social security income as well, assuming it will no longer exist. Knowing your number is important so that you can see your “finish line,” or at least the line that when you cross it, you have the option to stay on course or deviate to a new course. Now, what is your number? Securities offered through Triad Advisors, Inc., Member FINRA/SIPC.

help parents save thousands!

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Patrick Dennis

my

t s e B f sel

From learning the political ropes as a lobbyist, to working 18-hour days in his own restaurant, to teaching elementary school kids, Patrick Dennis has had his share of career changes. But it was his perpetual devotion to art that led him to his current role as a prominent member of Atlanta’s art scene. As a child, he received a sketchpad and pencils from his grandmother who told him, “Try this.” And try he did, with impressive skill for a youngster without any training. Dennis drew, painted with watercolors and created collages for years before making them public at age 25, when several of them were scooped up by museums. Then, after moving from Washington D.C. to Atlanta, Dennis partnered with Randall Fox to create The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces (AFFPS). Through this foundation, they began enhancing Atlanta’s outdoor social life and art scene by organizing a dozen annual art shows such as the Chastain Park Arts Festival and the Piedmont Park Arts Festival. Today these popular events are well respected in the art world and have given exposure and grants to artists nationwide. “It humbles me to know that I have helped thousands of artists grow their artistic careers,” Dennis says. “We provide many tools that help, and it’s gratifying to watch so many succeed beyond their expectations.”

What do you most look forward to with each festival?

Our festivals have many returning artists who have become part of our crazy family. It’s like a huge reunion every month! I also love to see what happens when someone wins an award. I was lucky enough to witness the first award won by a very successful artist, Marjorie Bowers, and know that it is encouraging to be validated in this way.

How have the festivals you put on with AFFPS evolved since their inception?

We started with great sensitivity to the artist and have enhanced that. As an artist myself, I know the needs, and we are getting better at anticipating, meeting or exceeding those needs. We started a non-profit component a few years ago and even have an “Artist Assistance Fund” to provide direct financial assistance to those in need.

What local artists should we be on the lookout for in the coming years?

There are so many emerging artists I hardly know where to start. I’m excited by Jim Loftus, who does completely unique assemblages reminiscent of Rauschenberg and Nevelson, only with a wicked sense of play. He moved from Atlanta to Florida, and I know he’ll be famous someday. I truly admire Michael Zavison, a Georgian artist, for his inventive use of chemical experiments on unexpected surfaces.

Do you have a favorite artist?

Now that is almost impossible to answer! My inclination is to appreciate the modern masters such as Pisarro and Cassat, but I enjoy the discovery of the new, so my “favorite” changes. Recently it was Thornton Dial, then Jean Arcelin. Who knows what is next? That’s the exciting part.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I love the outdoors. I grew up in southern California, so I love anything to do with the ocean. I’m also an avid reader with broad interest, so I’ve got a book going every day – my Kindle is about to explode. I just finished “So Big” by Edna Ferber.

What is your favorite way to stay fit?

I work a lot, so I don’t overeat because there is no time for that luxury. Plus, I’m a vegetarian, which keeps me away from really bad foods. For years I was an avid gym-goer even while traveling. I don’t have that in my routine lately, but if there’s a project on my property, you’ll find me there with a shovel, chainsaw or ladder to take care of it. I do Tai Chi when I can too.

What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m the kind of grandfather that I know people joke about: the doting, dreamy kind. I’m putty in those kids’ hands.

I never show anyone, but I can play a mean guitar. In fact, I own about six of them!

Who are the people that help you be your best self?

I am smart enough to know that without these people in my life I would still be scratching the proverbial dirt: Randall Fox, my partner in AFFPS, Lisa Windle, our festival director (and substitute daughter), Ellen Stein, a great friend and artist with a fearless sense of direction, plus my terrific friend, artist and gallery manager Mali Harrell, who makes me feel like I never have to worry about a thing (don’t I wish!).
