Newtown Square Together Bringing People

bo rs Fri en ds & Ne igh

The first month of this new decade has passed into history for Newtown Square Friends and Neighbors. And our new year of 2020 is moving fast. It’s February and we’re weathering winter’s weather well. I’m already looking to March, with expectation to march into Spring sooner as I expect our groundhog friend to give us a win on Groundhog Day this year, which is also Super Bowl Sunday, February 2nd. This February is different. And not only because one Friday Night Date Night in February will fall on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. This year, our intentions of Valentine’s Day all month long can last an extra day, on Leap Year Day, February 29th. It’s a gift to us only every four years, so find some way to be Bringing People Together on that extra special day. This month, Newtown Square Friends and Neighbors welcomes someone who truly is an expert in Bringing People Together: Lindsey Poeth, CSA, owner of Oasis Senior Advisors - Main Line. Lindsey has agreed to serve as an Expert Contributor for our hometown magazine in print and also online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. I’m honored that Lindsey agreed to sponsor Newtown Square residents while offering her free expert consulting services to our hometown seniors and their families, to assist them in investigating Senior Living and Housing. (See Lindsey Poeth’s first Oasis Senior Advisors ad on page 14.) With Lindsey Poeth coming on as a Sponsor of Newtown Township residents, I took stronger notice of how aligned Lindsey’s expertise is with our magazine mission to be “Bringing People Together.” So, this month I’ve used my Bringing People Together feature article (on page 14), to share how I’ve come to recognize how our advertising Sponsors have been Bringing People Together for many years, by services they provide for our community. I’m no longer surprised by our business leaders who now also bring you Newtown Square Friends and Neighbors magazine, including this new February 2020 issue I know you’ll enjoy.

Bob Blaisse Publisher

Dear Residents, It’s February and Love is in the air! As you feel the love and help it keep spreading to those you love, we hope those warm & fuzzy feelings keep you cozy as we slowly inch toward Spring. How appropriate that this month’s cover story is about newlyweds! Leonard and Franca Altieri’s wedding and reception on New Year’s Eve included some surprises for their guests, and we’re thrilled to share their story and joy with our Readers. And this issue includes a Business Profile about DANJOLELL Memorial Homes, founded over 40 years ago by Robert L. D’Anjolell, Sr. At each of their five locations, they help families memorialize and celebrate loved ones’ lives with the utmost dignity and respect. Be sure to check out our Calendar of Events on pages 26-27. You’ll see opportunities to experience the many ways this great community puts its heart and soul into entertaining, educating and celebrating all the things that make this a wonderful place to live, learn, work and play!

The Altieris:

Newlyweds as of New Year’s Eve by Liz Burnett

What if you went to a New Year’s Eve Party and woke up the next morning married and heading away on your honeymoon? That’s exactly what some young Newtown Square neighbors, Leonard and Franca Altieri, intentionally did recently when they rang in 2020. We’re delighted that as they finished preparing for their wedding, they took some time to share their story with us. Leonard was 9 when his family moved to Newtown Square from Prospect Park in 1999. He attended Saint Anastasia School, and graduated from Marple Newtown High School in 2008. For all four years at MNHS, he was President of his class. He also worked part-time at the Acme, and was named “Cashier of the Year” for 2008.

Meanwhile, Franca Tavella was growing up in South Philadelphia, where she attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, and Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School. During high school, Franca wrote for the school newspaper, and was a member of the Italian Club and the National Honor Society. Franca also worked every Saturday and summers in an Italian luncheonette her mother owned (Vincenzo’s Deli in South Philly). This is how Franca learned to cook, something she still enjoys doing. Many people in Franca’s family also worked there and Franca continued working there every Saturday until her mother sold the business and retired in 2015. Franca fondly say “the deli” is very special to everyone in her family. For college, Leonard attended West Chester University, and graduated in 2012, with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Latin American Studies. Franca attended St. Joseph’s University, and graduated cum laude in 2010 with a B.A. in History with a concentration in Business. In the Fall of 2013, Leonard and Franca were both first-semester students at Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law. They met in Torts class. “Torts is basically a class about slip and falls,” Leonard said, “So I always joke that Franca slipped and fell into my heart.” They started dating in Spring 2014. As their romance developed during law school, Franca completed two co-op internships and also participated in the Estate Planning Pro Bono Clinic. Also during law school, Leonard was elected for the first time to the Marple Newtown School Board. In 2016, they both graduated and received their Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Leonard is currently a licenced attorney in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey.

Proposal photo courtesy of Michele Moran Photography www.MicheleMoranPhotography.com

Since October 2018, he has been a private practice attorney at the law firm of Toscani & Gillin, P.C. “I enjoy finding solutions to my client’s issues and helping them achieve their ultimate goal,” Leonard said when we asked what he finds most interesting or satisfying about his work. Franca is currently a licensed attorney in PA, and works for Kleinbard LLC in Center City Philadelphia. She focuses her practice on tax and estates (estate planning, trust and estate administration, guardianships). “The part of my work I find most interesting and fulfilling,” said Franca, “is meeting with many different people, learning more about their background, their families, and their goals, and then helping them plan for the next generation.” Franca’s J.D. degree is a requirement for a career goal she may pursue: a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Taxation. Now, back to the romantic part of this story! Franca considers Leonard’s marriage proposal in 2018 as “the BEST engagement

EVER!” Knowing that she’s a HUGE Rocky fan, Leonard proposed at the Philadelphia Art Museum, in front of the Rocky statue, by quoting Rocky’s proposal to Adrian (in Rocky II). Leonard and Franca’s wedding on New Year’s Eve forever joined together the Altieri and Tavella families. They were married at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in Philadelphia, where Franca made all of her sacraments and where her paternal grandparents were married in 1951. Leonard’s pastor from St. Anastasia, Fr. Colagreco, concelebrated the Mass with Franca’s pastor, Fr. Martorano. The reception at Cescaphe Vie in Center City included some surprises for their guests: A midnight balloon drop and champagne toast and…a performance by the world-famous Fralinger String Band! The newlyweds’ honeymoon in French Polynesia included staying in an overwater bungalow and swimming with stingrays. The Groom’s proud parents, Leonard and Cheryl Altieri, still live in the same Newtown Square house on Valley View Lane where Leonard and his sister Brittany grew up. Brittany Altieri Naab now lives in West Chester. She is Co-Owner of Newtown Square’s Blush Salon, along with her Valley View Lane neighbor and childhood friend Michele Quinn. Continued on page 8

Franca’s brother, Justin is an electrician who owns his own business, He, his wife and their three daughters currently live in South Philadelphia. Franca lived in South Philly until after their wedding and honeymoon, when she moved into the Newtown Square home she and Leonard purchased a year ago. “I’ll certainly miss living in the East Passyunk neighborhood where I’ve lived for 30 years,” said Franca. “But I’m excited to see what the future — and Newtown Square — have in store for us!” Leonard and Franca have made it a priority to volunteer in service to their communities. From 2013-2018, Leonard was a member of the Newtown Township Planning Commission, and a member

of the Marple Newtown School Board 2013-2019. In November, he was elected to the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors, and began his term of office in January. He also served beyond his local community, as Campaign Coordinator for former Pennsylvania State Senate Majority Leader Dominic F. Pileggi (20102013). And in 2010, former Gov. Ed Rendell nominated Leonard and the Pennsylvania State Senate confirmed him to serve a two-year term on the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Franca also gives back to several communities: She’s a member of VIP, a Philadelphia nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance to low-income individuals. As a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association, she serves as Co-Chair of the Orphans’ Court Rules and Practice Committee. She’s also a member of the Philadelphia Estate Planning Council, and she volunteers to help St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church with their Annual Italian Festival. Leonard and Franca’s home is in the Newtown Heights section of Newtown Square. “It’s a great family neighborhood, with lots of young couples like ourselves, recently married and starting families,” said Leonard. “It gives you a true neighborhood and community feeling when you see kids riding bikes, playing in the yards, and walking to NELL games and practices,” he added. “Yes, this neighborhood is one of the reasons Leonard ran for Township Supervisor, to ensure the next generation of children have just as good — and an even better — childhood in Newtown Square!” Franca explained. As the newlyweds settle into their home and life together, they look forward to their favorite spare-time activities. For Leonard, it’s biking and reading, especially history books. For Franca, it’s yoga, walking the Ridley Creek State Park trails with Leonard, and playing with her two black labradors. And some traveling, especially every summer, to visit Leonard’s uncle and his family in Martha’s Vineyard. As these newlyweds begin this new year and new chapter of their lives, they do so with gratitude to their loving and supportive families, which Franca and Leonard know without a doubt have provided the firm foundation for their lives together. They both know that family is at the root of everything. As now they have created the new roots of their family tree. Frameless Glass Shower Doors and Enclosures Is it time to update your bathroom? If so, don’t just look at the economic side of what an update will mean for your home value. Also measure it in the joy value. That’s right, joy value. In other words: How much joy will an upgraded bathroom bring to you and your family? One aspect that will bring your bathroom into the 21st century is the use of a glass shower door, especially the modern feel of frameless glass doors. Before stepping into the project, there are certain questions you must ask yourself: 1. What is your budget for this project? 2. How much space is available for this project?

Time to Replace Your Shower or Tub Enclosure?

Let the experts at Bryn Mawr Glass help guide you through the process, while staying within your budget! Specializing in Custom Shower Enclosures: • Frameless • Semi-Frameless • Framed & Frameless Sliders • For any budget

4. What type of hardware will you use? 5. What’s the bathroom’s “foot traffic” and likely future use? If you’ve decided you have the budget for this project and you’re wild about the look of frameless doors, the next step is taking measurements. Precision is critical here, to ensure an adequate seal. Next, think of the angle of the shower doors: Most shower hardware is designed to fit 90, 135, or 180 degree angles. Will you have sliding glass doors or a single panel door? Doors can be configured for 90-degree angles or they can be made to a custom size. Some doors are perfect for a corner shower; smaller bathrooms could benefit from a single door installed to update the look of the bathroom. For larger bathrooms, consider a frameless shower enclosure, to add dimension to your room. Like frameless doors, this design gives your bathroom a clean and modern feel. Enclosures can be rectangular or hexagonal, depending on the configuration of your bathroom and budget. Next, consider glass design: Trends have led to a variety of glass types, colors, and patterns to choose from such as frosted glass, rain glass, polar glass, bronze or gray glass. In addition to the different finishes to the glass, you can select glass that has been coated to make cleaning even easier.

3. What type of glass will you use for your frameless glass shower doors?

February 2020

If you already have framed shower doors, why not upgrade to the modern look of frameless shower doors? Such a transformation is easy and typically in line with any budget concerns. NS

We’re pleased to announce that the February Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Devon Preparatory School Junior Colin McCusker! To celebrate this recognition, Colin received a Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate for a “Pizza Bowl” party from Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this award program.

Any grade 7-12 student who resides within the borders of the Marple Newtown School District and attends any public, private or home school can be nominated by a parent, teacher or themself. Send a 200-word essay to SOTM@SproulLanes.com explaining why the student excels in Service to friendship, school or other local communities. Academic or athletic excellence may be considered but are not required. The Winner will be featured in next month’s magazine and will also receive a Sproul Lanes Pizza Bowl gift certificate good for 2 hours of bowling for up to 10 people plus pizza, sodas, snacks and free shoe rental. N S

Colin’s SERVICE to his community is exemplary. His Eagle Scout service project was to install a butterfly garden and information board at a local elementary school. Colin designed, planned, and managed this project with the assistance of some fellow Troop 315 Scouts. Since Colin was a Freshman, he’s been involved in SpeakUp!, a Philadelphia-area nonprofit that helps teens learn to talk openly, honestly and without judgment with their peers, teachers and parents about difficult topics in their lives such as stress, anxiety, suicide, drinking, drugs, social and academic pressure. For the past two years, Colin has served as a Student Ambassador on his school’s SpeakUp! Student Leadership Team, helping to plan each year’s annual event. Colin appreciates how SpeakUp! has taught him to encourage conversations and listen empathetically. Colin also excels academically, having achieved Honor Roll status every quarter in high school. Since age 7, he has enjoyed playing the piano, which he did in Devon Prep’s Jazz Band as a Sophomore. He also enjoys being on his school’s tennis team each Spring, and serving as Goalie on his school’s soccer team each Fall. Colin finds being Goalie interesting and rewarding because he “likes the pressure of being the last line of defense.” A Digital Design course Colin recently took has him considering majoring in Engineering Design in college. Colin, may your future include interesting and rewarding ways to use your talents and time in service to many more communities!

Why I Love

Working at Rafferty Subaru The Rafferty Subaru showroom

When you think of buying a new or pre-owned car, there are many places to look. They’re for sale everywhere these days. The problem is how do you know you’re getting a fair or good deal? This is where Rafferty Subaru of Newtown Square steps in. Rafferty Subaru was founded in 1979 by Robert Rafferty, Sr. Their name is the gold standard for new and pre-owned vehicles in the greater Philadelphia area. In July of 2019, I was hired to be Rafferty Subaru’s Greeter and Sales Receptionist. When you walk into the showroom of this sleek modern building, it’s me who greets you and helps start our team’s mission: To meet or exceed your expectations for quality customer service.

I have been in the auto business for over 30 years, doing title work, being a receptionist, and finding leads for new car sales. There are clearly core principles here at Rafferty that we all uphold. It starts at the top, with the founder’s sons Bob and Kevin Rafferty, and also the founder’s grandson Bobby Rafferty. They hold us to the pledge that, “We ensure the love and respect is felt not only by our customers but by the whole community. Not because it is good for business but because it is the right thing to do.”

respect for customers. Customers continue to come back to Rafferty not only for new cars but for our great service center. Recently, a new grandmother stopped by, to check if her granddaughter’s car seat was placed correctly. A Service Technician helped place the car seat in the correct position, and one of the Rafferty Delivery Specialists went over the safety features of the vehicle again, to reassure her that her granddaughter would be safe.

The Rafferty Subaru team practices more than good business skills; they impact the community with respect. That’s why I love and am proud to be working at Rafferty Subaru. NS

Rafferty Subaru, one of the leading Subaru dealers in the country, contributes to the community as a whole in many ways. When the Highland Park Kirklyn Civic Association was in need of help finding winter coats for students at local elementary schools, Rafferty Subaru stepped right up. They donated those needed coats, and also helped with a toy drive for families in need during the holiday season. The Rafferty Subaru family, managers and employees are always ready to help out their neighbors. In the 7 months I’ve worked here, I’ve seen what a difference Rafferty Subaru makes, not only in their community but in their

Bringing People Together

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors

Our Sponsors Have Been Bringing People Together For Years This month, Newtown Square Friends and Neighbors welcomes Lindsey Poeth, CSA, owner of Oasis Senior Advisors - Main Line, a new Sponsor who provides free services to seniors and/or their families, to research and develop options for Senior Living and Housing. Lindsey Poeth’s skill and services can’t be overstated. When I first met Lindsey, I wondered why I had not known about Oasis Senior Advisors when I had to place my parents into Assisted Living. My siblings and I would have avoided worry and lost time if we used Lindsey’s free consulting. We had no idea which facility we needed, or how to fund nursing and memory care services for our elderly parents. Who does? (See ad on this page.) When I discovered how perfectly the mission of Oasis Senior Advisors aligns with our magazine’s mission to be “Bringing People Together,” I realized even more how the Sponsors of Newtown Square’s free monthly magazine have been Bringing People Together for many years, by the services they provide for us in our local community. Readers tell me how they love our magazine for its local features about Newtown Square residents and organizations. Our advertising Sponsors make that possible. While I can’t name them all here, it’s important that I ask: Do we value our hometown business leaders, not just for bringing us this magazine, but for the services they provide in our community? It’s important. In this time of Big Box stores and online buying, we’re blessed to have such great local business leaders who choose to spend their limited marketing budgets in Newtown Square, to make our hometown monthly magazine possible in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Think about our Sponsors when seeing their ads. For example: Sheila Turner’s From the Top Studio of Dance (page 4), or Lou Marvil’s Level Up Black Belt Academy (page 21). These beloved businesses in our community have long been Bringing People Together for instruction and fun, and to develop skills and confidence. Consider our restaurants and specialty food hometown Sponsors: Newtown Square Pizza and Grill (page 26), La Locanda Ristorante (page 25), Firepoint Gril, (page 13), Casey’s and The Porch at The Lamb (page 30), Providence Pizza Co., (page 9), Luigi & Giovanni (page 29) and Weinrich German Bakery (page 6). They’re Bringing People Together, and not only by the quality of their food and good service but also by investing 14

every month in this hometown magazine for Newtown Square residents. No doubt that’s why Rey Azteca, our newest restaurant in Newtown Square, comes on board as a new Sponsor next month: they want to invest back into our community. All our advertising Sponsors have been Bringing People Together in different ways for years. But now they have one thing in common: They’re showing us that Newtown Square is important, how we’re all important to the success of their business, and how they want to be Bringing People Together through our hometown magazine. So, whenever possible, choose to do business with our hometown heroes first, and thank them for their business services in our community. NS

Before, During and After a POWER

by Andrew Martella Martella Electric

FAILURE

During a power failure, you can extend the life of your cold and frozen food by keeping your refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Many times, the power is out for only a few hours and food spoilage is not an issue. When your cellphone’s battery needs to be charged and your power block is empty, you can recharge both batteries by plugging them into the live power sources inside your car. If you see anything unusual such as water dripping from the breaker box or the outside electrical wiring or equipment pulled away from your home, or if you smell a strange odor, you should immediately have an inspection done by a licensed and insured electrical contractor. NS

What causes your electrical power to go out? Automobile accidents can damage utility poles. High winds, snow and ice can pull down power lines. Utility company maintenance sometimes doesn’t go as planned. And occasionally, the cause is in your own home’s electrical system. There are some things you can do to avoid a power failure, and many things you can do to be prepared before, during and after the power and lights go out. A short or extended widespread power failure is not a problem if your home has a gas-powered backup generator system. Some folks feel such an investment is well worth the cost because it ensures they’ll have electricity, heat and A/C year-round regardless of what may cause a power failure. When weather forecasters predict conditions that could result in a power outage, make sure you have on hand plenty of bottled water and a battery-operated radio. Fully charge your cellphone and one or two mobile power banks/blocks, and put fresh batteries in your flashlights. Discuss with your family a plan to relocate if authorities require residents to evacuate. If your lights go out but your neighbors’ lights are still on, an electrical problem is affecting only your home. Check your circuit breaker panel or fuse box, to see if any breakers are tripped or fuses are burned out. A tripped circuit breaker or burned-out fuse may control many lights, making it seem like your entire house has no power. If all looks fine, check the meter box and electrical cables on your home’s exterior. If your neighborhood loses power, calling your local utility company can usually keep you updated about repair status and estimated time until power restoration. Many power companies now have a mobile app that provides such information.

The passing of a loved one is an inevitable life event. Many decisions must be made by families during what is often an exceptionally stressful time. This is when guidance from an experienced and caring Funeral Director can be invaluable. For over 40 years, Marple Newtown area families have been blessed by such guidance provided by family owned and operated DANJOLELL Memorial Homes and Crematory. Founded in 1963 by Robert L. D’Anjolell, Sr. (“Rob Sr.” ), DANJOLELL Memorial Homes has four locations to serve the community in Delaware County and the Philadelphia area. The main location is in Broomall; other locations include MalvernFrazer, Aston and Wallingford. All four locations have a traditional and distinguished exterior design and a first-class interior that includes a chapel and a specific design whose rooms and lounges accommodate the flow of family and guests for all types of funeral, cremation and memorial services. Rob Sr. was born during the Depression and grew up in the Overbrook section of West Philadelphia. After graduating from Overbrook High School, he followed his mother’s recommendation to become a Funeral Director, and graduated from Temple University, and then from mortuary science school. At age 27, he opened his first funeral home in Overbrook, with the help of his first wife, Elinore, at his side. His great success in serving that community enabled him to expand to Delaware County and open the Broomall location in 1978. (Elinor passed away in January 1980.)

Rob Sr. and his wife Maryann have two sons who work in the business, and a lovely daughter, Dana Barshak, who is a resident of Broomall with her husband, Eric, and two daughters Amanda and Sara, who helped in the early years of the business. Son Rob Jr., a graduate of St. Joe’s Prep and Franklin and Marshall College, joined the business as a Licensed Funeral Director in 1985, after graduating from the American Academy McAllister Institute. Rob Jr., an Executive Director of the business, serves as Supervisor of the Broomall location. He also handles financial matters for the entire business. Rob Jr. and his wife Carol live in Newtown Square with their four children. When their son Michael graduates from Northampton University in May, he will begin his internship with the family business. Rob Sr.’s other son, James W. D’Anjolell, Sr. (“Jim”), is also an Executive Director of the business, and serves as Supervisor of the Malvern-Frazer location. Jim received his Bachelor of Mortuary Science degree from Lynn University. He and his wife Margaret have two children, one of whom, James Jr., is the Manager and Certified Crematory Operator of DANJOLELL Memorial Homes Malvern-Frazer. In the Philadelphia area, DANJOLELL Memorial Homes and Crematory offers the broadest range of affordable and tasteful funeral, cremation and memorial services and options for families of all faiths and traditions. There’s a wide price range, to meet the needs of everyone in the community. DANJOLELL Funeral Directors simply guide the family: They introduce and explain each service option, answer questions, and then let each family choose whatever combination of services they feel is most desirable and appropriate for their circumstances. Traditional funeral services can include a viewing or visitation with family before a church or on-site chapel service. A cemetery burial service attended by family and guests is another option. Cremation services can include a memorial service. The Memorialization and Life Celebration options to fit your wishes and budget are many: A few examples include flowers preserved for a meaningful keepsake, a dove or butterfly release, and Video Tributes, Memory Tables and Picture Boards that display your loved one’s photos and personal cherished possessions.

In addition to a Licensed Funeral Director at each DANJOLELL location, there’s 10-12 full-time staff members, and part-time staff to help as needed with funeral-related services such as driving family and guests in the well-maintained fleet of funeral vehicles. There’s also on-site rooms for planning and selecting everything needed for a beautiful way to celebrate and memorialize your loved one’s life. Two of DANJOLELL Memorial Homes’ Licensed Funeral Directors are also Certified Preplanning Consultants who are available to help you make important informed decisions that will make it unnecessary for your loved ones to have to make complex choices at the difficult time of your passing. You can make all those plans and arrangements at any DANJOLELL location or in the comfort of your own home. As Rob Sr. reviewed with us the history, services and staff of DANJOLELL Memorial Homes, he asked that we include his personal message of thanks to Anthony F. Romano and Joseph Colantuono, for their dedicated longtime service and commitment to excellence. The hallmark of DANJOLELL Memorial Homes’ service to the community continues to be the dignity and respect they show for all families and their loved ones while professionally and discreetly guiding each family through difficult days and decisions. Rob Sr. knows he speaks for all DANJOLELL Funeral Directors and Staff when he says:

Danjolell Memorial Homes Broomall Upper- and Lower-Level Lobbies

We sincerely appreciate the confidence the community has shown us and our family by using our services for over 40 years. We all get great satisfaction by always doing our best to fully meet each family’s needs in an affordable, caring and confidential way. That has always been and will always be the primary Mission of our family’s business.

Considering Finishing Your Basement? Finishing your basement is a great idea and can add more living space and value to your home. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for some basements because of their size, the mechanical layout or other variables.

When finishing your basement, remember these important things that should be done or used.

Most older homes were not designed to be finished. Here are some key things that will help you determine if such a project is feasible for your basement.

2. Make sure any deteriorated walls are scraped and coated with the dry lock waterproofing paint.

1. Make sure pressure-treated lumber is used on the framing. At a minimum, the bottom plate has to be pressure-treated.

2. Are the heater, hot water heater and electrical box located in one area or spread out in various basement locations?

3. Most importantly, if there is any chance of water getting into your basement, we recommend installing a French drain. There’s nothing worse than finishing your basement and finding out you have water problems after the fact.

3. Is the ceiling height low? (often the case in older homes)

4. Make sure walls are insulated with the proper R value insulation.

4. Is the floor level or buckled?

5. Make sure a vapor barrier is installed behind the wall, cover ing all insulation and studs.

1. Do you have a lot of pipes and wires on the ceiling areas?

5. Does the floor take on water? 6. Are the walls deteriorating? 7. If you’re hoping to add a half- or full-bath in the basement, how feasible and how much expense will that add to the project? Now, all these issues can be corrected, but will substantially increase the price of the remodeling project. You have to consider the price in relationship to the amount of square footage you will gain.

6. Make sure there’s proper airflow to prevent any mold or mildew from accumulating. If you and your contractor determine that your basement is a viable candidate for a remodeling project, your contractor will then provide you with a detailed proposal including your agreedupon specifications. As the project progresses and nears completion, you and your contractor should agree on what is completed to your satisfaction, what’s still to be done and the completion timeline. NS

SAFETY INSPECTION

by Lou Matteo

Concerns

Edgemont Automotive

A recent automotive industry seminar included a topic about Pennsylvania’s Safety Inspection program. There are many reasons for a Safety Inspection rejection other than the most common brake and tire wear issues. Inspection rejections are such a great topic of concern for Pennsylvania auto repair shops and vehicle owners that it’s time to shed light on some concerns you may have at inspection time.

Photos courtesy of Lou Matteo

Custom accessories are challenging: Lift kits, custom wheel and tire packages, lights, etc., all have the capability of changing the safety and handling characteristics designed by the manufacturers. Before you spend a lot of money installing such accessories, consult a certified PA Safety Inspection facility for potential rejections. These and many more rules are enforced to ensure the safety of our vehicles and loved ones. All inspection stations are audited, and technicians are recertified to ensure professionalism. Most technicians have their customers’ safety and best interests in mind, but If you think you’ve been unfairly rejected, ask for clarity on the failing component. If you feel the answer you receive is unsatisfactory, Pennsylvania has a referee system to resolve disputes.

Examples of rejected tires

Tires are always thoroughly inspected, not only for tread depth but condition; e.g., dry rot, wear patterns, road hazard damage, etc. Here are three common reasons why a tire would be rejected upon state inspection. (There are many more reasons.)

Happy New Year, Neighbors, and Happy Driving!

NS

1. The tire has less than 2/32" tread left on any two adjacent treads. 2. The tire is worn so that the tread wear indicators contact the road in any two adjacent grooves. 3. The tire shows other conditions or markings reasonably believed to render it unsafe for highway use.

Examples of rust concerns

Rust and rot are more common in older vehicles, but sooner or later, can become a concern for newer vehicles here in “the salt belt.” Rusty fuel and brake lines are tricky: Those components can only be rejected if they’re leaking at inspection time. A vehicle may be rejected if those components are thought not to be durable enough to make it a year without failing. The technician’s discretion is used in such cases. Rotted frame and uni-body components must be in solid condition, and floors must be able to hold passengers and cargo with no holes for fumes to enter the passenger compartment. These inspection items should not be a surprise; they’re checked annually, and your automotive professional should be giving warnings in the early stages so that a repair strategy can be planned.

Expert Contributors by Dave DiGregorio & TJ Dell’Arciprete Delaware Valley Septic, Sewer & Storm

Converting From Septic to Sewer? One of the many exciting changes happening in Newtown Square is the installation of the new sewer system. This will be great for homeowners whose home has a septic system that’s not working properly or has real estate inspection issues. The first phase of the project, in Echo Valley known as the Ashford Project, is scheduled to be completed by May 2020. Whether you’ve decided to connect as soon as possible, defer connection or somewhere in-between, there’s an initial tapping fee of $6,950. If you defer connecting to the public sewer, you’ll need a certification report annually, which would be allowed for up to 10 years. If the home is sold or the existing septic system is found unsatisfactory, you must connect to the public sewer. Converting from on-site septic to public sewer involves more than just running a new pipe. When preparing to make the underground improvements, meeting on-site with your contractors and discussing the installation in detail is necessary to identify all obstacles and concerns and minimize surprises. Most homes will connect via gravity. However, if the existing sewer line leading to your septic system is unable to reach the public sewer via gravity, a pump station will have to be installed. If installed correctly, a new gravity PVC sewer main is virtually

maintenance free. With a gravity sewer line, you’ll never have to worry about power outages, pump, float or electrical connection failures needing maintenance or repairs to avoid backups into your home. For a family of four, the pump station will typically operate twice every day. If your home has to utilize a pump station, most contractors use an “e1” pump station (short for manufacturer environmental one). The average life of a pump station is 10 years and may require maintenance. Whenever you do connect, make sure your current septic system is abandoned correctly. Properly decommissioning a septic tank or cesspool is as important as the sewer installation. You don’t want to deal with any surprise sinkholes or cave-ins later when existing components eventually deteriorate and collapse. If you have drainage or seepage fields, nothing needs to be done, but to avoid potential problems, discuss with your contractor how such areas will be handled. Homeowners are often very concerned about how their property will look after the sewer connection job. Grass always grows back, plants can be put back, paver patios and driveways can be reinstalled. Such items should be discussed with your contractor so you know your property will be restored. NS

FAMILY BONDING with MARTIAL ARTS

by Lou Marvil Level Up Black Belt Academy

How often do you have the opportunity to participate in the same activity as your child other than volunteering at school or sporting events? Even then does your child feel the positive impact of your presence or is it something that is just done to be part of the “community”? As many experts have declared, martial arts training is an excellent choice for children. A great martial arts school will provide them the training that will improve their discipline, respect, confidence, self-esteem, and fitness and also develop their ability to protect themselves. Each of these is an excellent reason to get your child involved in the martial arts. Something that training in the martial arts provides that other sports and activities do not is the opportunity to train, improve and advance together as a family. There is no better way to show your child just how involved you are in their martial arts journey than by joining them in class. Families that train together develop a stronger bond that lasts a lifetime, as common goals are set and learning to help and encourage each other to reach the next level becomes a daily routine. Parents and siblings develop greater respect for one another as they inspire and support each other through their training. The family motivation factor pushes each member to reach higher goals than they would most likely reach on their own. There are always achievements to celebrate together, but some of the most important moments are when children see parents deal with and overcome challenging moments during their training. Family time at home can now include supporting each other while practicing together and preparing for the next rank.

During your journey, you will share the fun and have the opportunity to develop great family memories in addition to getting into better shape and improving your health while reducing stress. You will develop self-defense skills that provide a whole new level of confidence about being able to protect yourself and your loved ones. Earning a black belt is certainly an amazing accomplishment, but earning one as a family is life changing! Look for a martial arts school that offers family classes, and set up a time to speak with the instructor about getting your family started today. NS

Expert Contributor by Ryan Gray Ryan Gray Oppenheimer & Co.

What to Teach Your Kids About Money What should parents teach their kids about money so they’re prepared for the future? Every kid should learn these basic financial principles – the younger, the better.

SAVE We all know it’s important to create a budget, even if that’s a daunting or tedious task. Fortunately, kids don’t have too many expenses to keep track of. The first lesson to teach kids is the most important: Save as much as you can, as early and as often as you can.

Clothes, sneakers, video games, makeup and jewelry are items that most kids spend their money on. While it’s fun to get the latest toy or clothes, they should learn that newer or bigger isn’t always better. With the proper discipline and mindset, kids can save up for items they think they can’t live without. As soon as they get their working papers, kids must learn the sage advice: “Pay yourself first” by socking away 10% of their paychecks right off the top. Also remind kids that their #1 job is to go to school and get an education. After-school, weekend and summer jobs are usually only temporary, and that income may stop as quickly as it started.

INVEST Building on the philosophy of saving early and often, children should understand how to invest in the financial markets. Savings accounts and money market accounts are useful because they come with easy access to cash in case of an emergency. Those accounts carry virtually no risk but earn very little interest. If your child can think about the future (beyond five years) and is comfortable with risk, a custodial brokerage account, Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) or Uniform Gift to Minors Act (UGMA), for example, may make sense.

USE CREDIT RESPONSIBLY As kids get closer to age 18, they’ll be tempted to sign up for credit cards. Unfortunately, that temptation may continue well into their adult lives. Credit cards aren’t a bad thing as long as the balance owed is paid back in a timely and consistent fashion. The credit limits are usually low, about $500 to $1,000. But the interest rates can be incredibly high, anywhere from a “low” rate of 7% at the beginning (to entice you to sign up for the card) to a high rate of 27% (sometimes as soon as a few months later). If you can properly manage your debt and pay your bills on time, then a credit card can be an effective way to build your financial profile for the future. Make sure children know early that they can always reach out to you and others for help in making financial decisions. It’s never too early to start, and many children find saving and investing a lot of fun. NS

Many of our Readers are very familiar with MJT’s programs, having participated themselves as a kid and/or having their own kids or even grandkids participating. To discover the “secret sauce” that has enabled MJT to serve our community so well for 60 years, we interviewed Newtown Square resident and longtime MJT Cheer Program Coach Laurie DiCola. Laurie first connected with MJT in 2006, when her sister was Director of MJT’s Cheer Program and her niece was a Cheerleader. That was also the year MJT added the Flag Football and Cheer Programs for boys and girls ages 5+6. Laurie’s son would be play-

ing Flag Football that year, so when she was asked to coach the new Flag Cheer Program, she agreed to “give it a shot.” “To be honest,” admitted Laurie, “I was never a cheerleader myself, but there was something about it that came naturally to me. I had learned enough from watching the women who coached my niece to be able to assume the role.” Laurie proved to indeed be a natural: She eventually became MJT’s Director of Cheerleading while continuing to coach the Cheer Teams for various age groups. As Laurie’s son proceeded in MJT’s several Football levels and Laurie continued coaching the Cheer Teams, she says “MJT was the focal point of my life. It became an identity.” It was a job she says she never took lightly. She also knows she could never have accomplished so much without the support and help from parents and other volunteers, for whom she is still very grateful. “Along the way, we faced challenges and shared much success, all of which I feel strengthened us as a community,” Laurie said confidently. “MJT has flourished due to the countless volunteers who have donated their time, energy, and

experience to ensure that this youth sports program would thrive. The dedication from parents and volunteers is the driving force behind the longevity of the program.” Even though Laurie has no daughters, being an MJT Cheer Coach has given her the opportunity to be like a mother to hundreds of girls. When Laurie’s son exited MJT’s Football program after 8th grade, her continuous years as a Cheer Coach also came to an end. But the impact of the experience never left her. When her son headed off to college and she was again asked to help coach the Flag and Pee Wee Cheer Teams (ages 5-8), she was thrilled. “It was exactly what I needed, and I welcomed the invitation!” said Laurie. “Coaching at the youngest levels is both very challenging and rewarding. My goal is always to hopefully start them off on the right path and form good habits early. If the girls are progressing and having fun at the same time, I know we are succeeding as an organization.”

(L to R) Amanda DiStefano, Laurie DiCola and Katie Fusaro

Laurie’s 13 years of coaching and working with MJT youth, their parents and great program leaders such as Amanda DiStefano, Katie Fusaro, Steve Reynolds and Kevan Strigle have given her first-hand proof that this program is “so much more than firstplace trophies and championships. The joy comes from the relationships and friendships formed, and the mentoring of young children through a sport we are all passionate about.” MJT is a “feeder program” into Marple Newtown High School. Laurie feels honored and proud to have coached many of the MN Tiger High School Cheerleaders who now are at the top of their sport. For many years, studies and personal experiences have proven that youth sports programs with positive leadership build strong communities. Marple Jr Tigers Coaches, Program Directors and other volunteers continue to help today’s kids prepare for a world that runs best on the principles of sportsmanship and fair play. NS

History Spotlight

Preserve the Lincoln Banner!

The Wide Awakes on Parade Public Domain

by Doug Humes During the contentious election of 1860, with four candidates running for President, each candidate’s backers took to parading through the streets, at night and by torch light, to promote their candidate. Abraham Lincoln’s supporters called themselves the Wide Awakes, and the local chapter in Media marched under a huge banner featuring a clean-shaven Lincoln (he did not grow the beard until after the election), and slogans about preserving the Union. A later description of the banner noted that “The marching club at Media penetrated all sections of the county and engaged in many a miniature riot. In Kellyville [now a part of Clifton Heights – Ed.], it was fired upon by the Democrats who had sworn that the man who had carried a Lincoln banner into that district should not carry it out.” When that account was written, the banner was hanging in the office of the Republican Party in Media, and was described as “a relic of the past” with “bullet holes through the folds of it.”

That Lincoln banner still exists, 160 years later, and is now cared for by the Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS). They are raising funds for its preservation, with the ultimate plan being to restore, protect and then display it in a clear plexiglass, air-pressurized case so that visitors can view both sides. We have over half a million people in Delaware County. If every person sent along a donation, the banner would be preserved for future generations.

Kevin O’Donnell

O’Donnell Roofing Company by Bob Blaisse

The roofing industry has changed drastically since O’Donnell Roofing Co. was founded in 1924, by current Owner Kevin O’Donnell’s great-grandfather. Three generations of roofing experts before Kevin prepared him well to assume leadership in 2012. Kevin attributes his work ethic to having started at age 12 working with his roofing expert dad Lawrence. Early on, Kevin showed he was determined, entrepreneurial, and someone who loved to work at something he could call his own. After graduating from Haverford High School, he enrolled in a work-study program at a college in Vermont, and ran a deli while taking classes. After college, he stayed there for a few years until he felt the Marple Newtown area and his father’s business calling him to return.

.50 cent wings: bone-in & boneless Wednesday 3:30 - 10pm and all day Sunday

With such a strong work ethic and a philosophy of “Show me once and I’ll do it,” Kevin quickly rose in the ranks and proved himself at every opportunity. In the past 10 years, he has focused on business growth, and the company has been servicing commercial clients since 2013. Kevin O’Donnell now manages O’Donnell Roofing’s crew of 25, and he makes it a priority to treat every one of his workers in ways that build trusting and loyal relationships. O’Donnell Roofing’s new employees and professional growth under his management are results he’s deservedly proud of. As O’Donnell Roofing Co. nears its 100th anniversary, Kevin O’Donnell proudly looks back on how four generations of his family combined ever-changing roofing products, innovative service and traditional local charm to create a business that still stands strong in the Marple Newtown community. Kevin O’Donnell, the fourth-generation Owner of O’Donnell Roofing Co., lives in Broomall with his wife Lisa and their two children. Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System

2. Directional Drilling System

Digging Down to The Sewer Main

Underground Horizontal Drilling

Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.

Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
