The New Year has arrived, and this new year returns us an easier time when stating the number of the year. It has become short and simple again: Twenty Twenty. We no longer will be stumbling to say as “two thousand and…whatever.” Some 20 years past Y2K, we’ve entered the 20s of the 21st century, and life is good, with 20/20 vision for a great new year and a new decade. Happy New Year, Everyone! Yes, I am one of those who has set a New Year’s goal to lose a few pounds, and more than a few. And yes, I have a resolution to take a little more vacation in 2020, more than I took last year when taking Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors to the next level, and getting us launched online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. My 2020 goal for our magazine is simple, but I can’t achieve it without our Reader Leaders. What’s a Reader Leader? It’s someone who gets our magazine. By that, I not only mean a reader who looks forward to our magazine arriving in the mail each month; it’s a reader who “gets it,” how Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is Bringing People Together, as a hometown magazine about the people, for the people, and by the people of Newtown Square. But Reader Leaders especially recognize our hometown magazine is only possible because of the business leaders in our community who have agreed to become Advertising Sponsors, committing financially to support the residents of Newtown Square. Will you be a Reader Leader in 2020? It’s simple. Just Buy Local when you can in 2020. And whenever possible, choose to buy from one of our Advertising Sponsors first. And be sure to let them know why. Thank them for their leadership in our community, which is Bringing People Together in Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors each month. Be a Reader Leader in 2020, and start by enjoying our first issue of the 2020s.

The Retzbach Family:
Designing and Creating Their Perfect Life Sometimes, a life “chapter” happens more quickly for some folks than it does for others. At such times, being creative and able to pedal faster are skills that come in very handy! Meet two neighbors, Andy and Katy Retzbach, who have graciously agreed to share their experience with doing just that.
by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com
Andy Retzbach grew up in Glenolden. As a kid, he loved knowing how things were put together. He would learn by taking things apart and putting them back together. Andy probably didn’t know it at the time but his future career would require that his hands and brain work very well together. After he graduated from Ridley Park High School and finished one semester at Neumann College, he decided to enter the Air Force. He joined right after 9/11, at age 18. During his 3 years of active duty, he earned an Associate of Science degree and was stationed all over the US and in South Korea for 18 months. Now a Veteran, Andy has worked as a Steamfitter with Local Union 420 since 2006, and hopes to someday become a Foreman. “I love working with my hands and creating things,” Andy explained. He also developed those skills 20 years ago, while working on boats as a marine mechanic. Katy Retzbach grew up in Havertown. She loved helping her dad with DIY projects around the house, like installing hardwood floors, running electrical into bedrooms, and doing other odds and ends. She also loved frequently rearranging her bedroom. So after she graduated from Haverford High School, she attended Arcadia University, and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Interior Design. In 2013, Katy received a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture and

Design from Drexel University. While working for five years for custom cabinet manufacturer Village Handcrafted Cabinetry, Katy worked on a lot of Interior Design side jobs, so many that in 2015, she decided to start her own business, Designs by Katy Lynn (www.DesignsByKatyLynn.com). “Every design is different and exciting!” Katy raved. “Each project has its own problems and needs, so it's never the same thing over and over again.” Katy dreams of someday opening up a showroom/storefront as well as continuing her Interior Design business.
attends The Malvern School, and is a big fan of playground swings, running around on playgrounds, and getting dirty in playground sand and dirt. She also loves any type of art, an interest/gift likely inherited from her two creative parents. But she “absolutely LOVES animals!” and spends a lot of time with the Retzbach’s two Terrier-mix dogs, Peter and Frankie, and their new pet goldfish, Dorothy. Harper is already famous at St. Anastasia Church, where she likes to run out of the pew and towards the altar at Mass most Sundays.
Andy and Katy met in September 2013, on Match.com. Before meeting in person, they emailed, texted and talked by phone for six months. Their meeting finally took place at Andy’s parents’ house in Ridley Park, where he was living because the house he owned was rented at that time.
Toddler Harper became a big sister in July when Katy and Andy welcomed twins Andrew Jr. and Scarlett into their family. Now 4 months old, they’re already showing their distinct personalities. Scarlett is “very calm and chill” and loves to sleep. Andrew is “a little all over the place: very happy one minute and very fussy the next.” Katy’s mom is retired and watches the twins full time while Katy and Andy are at work. Time will soon tell what Andrew and Scarlett’s common and unique interests are. Right now, they both enjoy life’s simple pleasures: eating and laying on their play mat.
Three years later, Andy and Katy got married at the Old Homestead Golf Club in New Tripoli, PA. They chose that venue (an hour away from Havertown) because it’s an old bank barn whose architectural details Katy loves. And Andy, who enjoys hunting, also felt that barn’s rustic setting was perfect for them and their guests. After honeymooning in Costa Rica for two weeks, they moved into their home in Newtown Square, where they’ve lived since 2016. In just three years, these newlyweds have blossomed into a family of 5! Their daughter Harper, who turned 2 in October, is a “happy little girl who loves to sing, dance and laugh!” She
When Katy and Andy moved to Newtown Square in 2016, she was already familiar with the area. Now that she and Andy are busy parents of 3 kids under age 3, they are VERY grateful that their parents and many other relatives all live nearby. And by coincidence, their next-door neighbor is the father of one of Andy’s grade school friends. “Our community is great, and our Continued on page 8

neighbors are, too!” Katy said. “We love how living here makes everything so close and convenient. But having almost two acres of wooded land gives us the feeling of having space around us, so we don't feel like we’re on top of our neighbors,” she added. Andy and Katy now also have more in common: Katy was recently baptized a Catholic. Since their daughter Harper’s Baptism, Katy had seriously been considering becoming a Catholic. Last Spring, when the time felt right and not rushed, she completed the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program and made her profession of faith at St. Anastasia’s Easter Vigil.
Katy and Andy Retzbach
Andy and Katy also make a special effort to support their local and wider communities: They volunteer at their church and at events that benefit veterans and all armed forces. Katy serves on the Board of the local NKBA chapter (National Kitchen and Bath Association). And Andy helps local kids study for the test to be in the Steamfitters’ Union. As Katy and Andy look forward life’s next “chapter” — their kids being old enough to enjoy some road-trip vacations — they’re humble enough to thoroughly enjoy another thing they have in common, something they’ve long considered one of life’s simple pleasures: Playing 2-hand touch football. Expert Contributor by Scott Magness Scott’s Fireplace Products
Is a Gas Log Fireplace in Your Future? The next time you’re heading outside to collect logs and kindling for your wood-burning fireplace, think about all the advantages of a gas fireplace. Chopping wood and gathering kindling might soon become a thing of the past. Gas fireplaces were invented as an alternative to wood-burning fireplaces, not to replace them. However, gas fireplaces have become very popular because they’re so convenient. While they can’t mimic the natural crackling and popping you hear with a wood-burning fireplace, a gas fireplace is an easier, safer, and cleaner way to enjoy a fire. For wood fires, you must find time to gather kindling. After lighting the kindling, you must position the logs on the grate and wait for them to catch fire from the kindling. And the final chore is cleaning up and disposing of ashes. Most people don’t have the time or interest to get involved in all that, which is why so many wood-burning fireplaces rarely or never get used. Some people think there’s no comparison between gas and wood-burning fireplaces in terms of appearance, but that isn’t always true. Gas fireplaces offer a level of ambiance and realism comparable to wood. The hand-painted ceramic gas logs give an authentic look of real wood, and with their amber glow, it looks like they’re actually on fire. Some gas fireplaces have even been known to be mistaken for a wood-burning fireplace!
Most gas fireplaces produce more warm radiant heat than you get from a wood-burning fireplace. Some gas fireplaces can even supplement a home’s basic heating system. The temperature and flame appearance on gas fireplaces can easily be adjusted. You can instantly increase or decrease the flame height to keep the room at a comfortable temperature, while still enjoying the ambiance and atmosphere created from the gas fire. No matter your home’s decor, there’s a gas fireplace to compliment every style. Even if your home doesn’t have an existing wood fireplace, a gas fireplace can easily be added because no chimney is required. Finally, gas fires burn clean. Unlike wood-burning fireplaces, they don’t give off smoke, require an annual chimney cleaning or leave behind ashes to sweep up. Most gas fireplaces have remote options to control temperatures and set timers. Best of all, there’s no waiting for the flames to die down. Simply push a button or flip a wall switch to turn off a gas fireplace. And it’s just that easy and quick to enjoy a cozy fire anytime! NS

To celebrate this recognition, Matthew received a Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate for a “Pizza Bowl” party from Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this award program. Matthew is very deserving of this award: He was recently elected by his peers to serve as Senior Patrol Leader of his Boy Scout Troop 315. In that role, he serves as liaison between his peers the Troop’s Scouts and the adult Troop Leaders. Matthew believes it’s very important to take an active role and lead by example. He made it a priority to help several Scouts as they were developing and managing their Eagle Scout service project. Upon graduation from St. Anastasia School, Matthew received two notable awards: The American Legion School Award from Marple Post 805, and the Presidential Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence (for a 4-year general average of at least 93). Matthew played on NELL Baseball teams from age 5-12. He’s currently on a baseball team in the Broomall Newtown Babe Ruth League. At Marple Newtown High School, Matthew was on the Freshman football team, and he now runs indoor and outdoor track. Local Star by Liz Burnett Henry J. Worthington, 92-year-old Newtown Square resident and first-time author
Henry Worthington:
Newtown Square’s Oldest First-Time Author Henry J. Worthington was born in Broomall on November 15, 1927, where he grew up, in his family’s “compound,” a commercial building and several homes that housed his family, his grandparents, and some uncles, aunts and cousins. Henry attended St. Anastasia School and West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys. He graduated after only 3½ years because he, like all young men back then, got drafted into the Army three months after their 18th birthday. After Henry completed Army basic training in August 1946, he was sent to the west Pacific islands, to “help wind down the residue” of World War II. When he was discharged from the Army in March 1947, he was not yet 20 years old. In 1948, Henry met his future bride at a dance in Upper Darby. Sarah Hogan of East Lansdowne was an accomplished skate dancer and very good straight dancer. She shared his lifelong
love of dancing, developed from “dancing in the grass”during his childhood at the frequent fun gatherings at his family’s home. Meeting and dancing with Sarah grew into a romance, and they planned to get married in September 1950. In June 1950, when the Korean War required Henry to reactivate his military service, he and Sarah were relieved to learn that he was disqualified due to a recent surgical operation. Almost 70 years later, Henry still often wonders if he had gone to serve in the Army Infantry troops sent there, would he have survived the brutal conditions and returned home to Sarah and their future together. Those thoughts often then remind him of his father, a World War I Purple Heart-decorated veteran who had his left shoulder ripped open in the trenches of 1918 France.

Made to order hot & cold subs!
Henry’s first book, Farewell, Amelia Mary: Long Time Looking, published when he was 90, is a memoir in which he shares his thoughts about many events in his life, including the hell he imagines his father and his fellow soldiers endured but never talked about. Henry says his life married to Sarah for 65 years and raising their six children in the Newtown Square Cape Cod home they purchased in 1952 was ”ordinary.” But the profound perspectives and reflections in his book tell another story. The book’s title relates to an included segment about a 1937 event that Henry, then age 10, vividly remembers: Amelia Mary Earhart disappeared at sea while attempting to be the first woman pilot to fly around the world. That tragic event caused Henry to notice how the young girls he knew were profoundly saddened by the loss of a courageous woman whom they considered a role model. In his book, he shares his thoughts about the value of role models for every generation. He also muses on several other “touchpoints” in his early years, such as 1927, the year he was born and the year in which Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic. Another touchpoint was the date Henry met his future wife Sarah: December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, which put into motion his eventual Army service in the Pacific. Another national tragedy that inspired Henry to express his reaction in a poem (included in his book) was the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963. When asked to sum up his life, Henry said, “Talk is just sound, meaningless, unless we experience something new, maybe a bit odd and out of our comfort zone.” He said his goal for his
first book was to give readers an idea of who he was and who he knows himself to be today: “A 92-year-old old guy who’s attempting to write a second book before the lights go out forever.” Henry hopes that both of his books help him connect with his readers and “prompt for them some meaningful contemplation and perhaps some joy and comfort.” The “ordinary” part of Henry’s life is that he owned and ran a successful tax accounting business in Newtown Square from 1955 to 1995 while being a husband and dad. He still lives in that same house, but now misses Sarah, his sweetheart and wife of 65 years. Henry describes that feeling as “the deep, deep alone.” He thinks that topic may be a theme in his next book. Another theme may be what he describes as “the lonely love,” a continuous and profound search (the “Long Time Looking”) we all seem to do as we look for something new or some answer or connection that satisfies a need, even if it’s simply to keep us curious about life. Publisher’s Note: Local Stars like Henry Worthington aren’t celebrities who live here; they’re stars who live locally and should be recognized. We are honored to help our Readers discover this “Local Star” whose light has been brightly shining in our community for 92 years! Henry’s book is available from online booksellers. His memoir includes nine short stories, essays and poems associated with historical events that contemporary thinking can identify with. Henry donates all royalties to two organizations that support veterans: the VFW’s Home for Children and the Disabled American Veterans. N S

Two issues of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors have been delivered since our November 2019 issue, which featured 104-year-old Henry (Eugene) Vickers on our cover. And the Happy Birthday cards readers were urged to send Mr. Vickers have not stopped coming to his home. If you missed the feature about Newtown Square’s oldest WW II veteran, you can read it online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Since Mr. Vicker’s 104 th birthday on November 11 th, he has received over 100 Happy Birthday cards in the mail, coming from PA, CA, VA, OH, NC and FL, mostly from people who have never met him but read his story in our magazine. Every card offered birthday greetings and thanks to Mr. Vickers for his service to God, Country and Family during his long life. In addition to mailed cards, another 100 or more handmade cards arrived from students of Delaware County Christian School, Culbertson Elementary School, Conestoga Christian School and High Point Christian School. And not just cards! A beautiful flower arrangement also arrived, and the Delaware County Christian School sent chocolates, to help recall sweet and satisfying memories from 1955, when Mr. Vickers and his wife Betty were one of the founding families of that Newtown Square school.

On his birthday, which this year was also Veterans Day, Mr. Vickers traveled to Washington DC, to receive honors. His large extended family traveled with him by luxury bus, to cheer him on and to witness Mr. Vickers laying a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Sailor at the U.S. Navy War Memorial. 14

Back home, our Bringing People Together magazine motto certainly was embraced by readers, and also by Newtown Township elected officials who acted on behalf of all residents on November 25, when they invited Mr. Vickers to the township building to be present for their unanimous passing of a Newtown Township Resolution. Newtown Township Board of Supervisors Chairman John Nawn read aloud the resolution honoring Mr. Vickers’ long life of 104 years, his 65 years of residency in Newtown Township, and his many years of service to his country, family and community. For months, everyone has asked me “How’s Mr. Vickers?” and told me how great it was to learn about Newtown Square’s oldest World War II veteran. I tell everyone it was an honor for Liz Burnett and me to get to know Mr. Vickers and also his family who provide such love and service to our hometown hero. Mr. Vickers has asked me to thank everyone who sent him birthday cards. And I want to thank Mr. Vickers for Bringing People Together by his 104th birthday, and his life story featured in our hometown Mr. Vickers surrounded by the many magazine. All those birthbirthday cards he received day cards, the goodwill of Newtown Square residents learning about their oldest World Veteran at 104 years old, all that hometown pride, none of it would have been possible without our other hometown heroes of another kind. I call them heroes, our Advertising Sponsors who make our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine possible. They are responsible for Bringing People Together each month through our magazine, and we’re all better for it! Please reach out to a Sponsor and thank them for their service to our community. NS

Things You Should Know About

Carbon Monoxide
Len Sciulli & Sons Heating & Air Conditioning
4. Broken or blocked vents and flues are probably the most common cause of CO buildup. If you see any holes, discon nections, or rust stains indicating corrosion, call a profes sional immediately. Be sure rooftop vents have guards to prevent birds’ nests or other debris from falling into the chim ney and blocking the escape of harmful gases. 5. Carbon monoxide results from incomplete combustion. Many appliances have built-in safety components that prevent oper ation if an unsafe condition exists. If an appliance keeps shutting off, don’t keep turning it back on, especially if you experience any of the above symptoms. Have it checked by a professional.
Tasteless, colorless, odorless carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by almost every fuel-burning appliance, including furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, grills and gas space heaters. When such equipment works correctly, very little CO escapes. What does escape gets vented harmlessly to the outside. When something goes wrong with the equipment or the venting, CO becomes a deadly household hazard.
6. CO detectors should be installed where they will be heard, including outside bedrooms so people can hear the alarm while sleeping and unable to detect any symptoms. Installing a detector near a furnace, water heater, or other CO-emitting appliance will likely result in many false alarms. NS
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Here are some things to know about CO and how to guard against it causing a tragedy in your home. 1. Some symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, sleepiness, and disorientation. Unfortunately, these same symptoms are associated with flu, food poisoning, and other afflictions, leading to many misdiagnoses. A cherry red face is also a possible sign of CO poisoning. 2. For healthy adults, CO becomes toxic when it reaches a level higher than 35 ppm (parts per million) with continuous exposure over an 8-hour period. This is the maximum expo sure tolerated by OSHA. Mild exposure over 2-3 hours (a CO level between 35 ppm and 200 ppm) will produce dizziness, drowsiness, and vomiting in as little as 1 hour. This level of exposure is life threatening once three hours have passed. Extreme exposure (800+ ppm) will lead to unconsciousness, brain damage, and death in as little as a few minutes. Infants and people with heart conditions are more susceptible to CO poisoning than healthy adults. 3. If anyone experiences CO poisoning symptoms, vacate the home immediately and notify the fire or police department. Don’t open doors and windows because that makes it hard for authorities to determine whether there is a CO problem when they inspect the home.

MSP Consulting Group provides Accounting and Bookkeeping services for small- and mid-size businesses and also for nonprofits and individuals. MSP is locally owned and operated by Stephen L. Steve has enjoyed his career as a CPA. He likes working directly with people and helping them keep their financial records in order. It puts a smile on his face when “the books” balance, everything ties out, and he provides his clients with everything they need.
A Broomall resident since the early 1960s, Steve attended Cardinal O’Hara High School and especially enjoyed the Bookkeeping course he took in his senior year. He took that as a sign he might like a career as an Accountant, so in college at St. Joseph’s University, he pursued and earned a B.S. in Accounting. His intuition was correct: He has been a CPA since 1977. MSP Consulting Group also prepares and files Federal and State tax returns for businesses and individuals. To ensure those returns are accurate and take advantage of all eligible deductions, Steve’s firm also provides tax law advice and tax planning. exhaust fans. If your kitchen and bathroom have windows, open and close them as often as possible (something homeowners seem to rarely do these days).
A recent TV report stated that Americans spend at least 90% of their time indoors. Yet, indoor air quality is typically 3 to 4 times more polluted than outdoor air, due to insufficient ventilation and excessive moisture content throughout the house.
Maintaining moderate moisture levels in your home is primarily accomplished by rainwater and melted snow and ice running off your roof and down the rain gutters and siding.
Two areas in your home that absolutely require ventilation are the attic and the basement (or crawlspace). Other recommended areas are the kitchen and bathroom, by using
You’re Going to LOVE Your DRY BASEMENT! Expertly serving the Philadelphia region for 25+ years with the most affordable basement waterproofing services.
We have three seasons for humidity control: 4 months of the heating season (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb); 4 months cooling season (May, Jun, Jul, Aug); and 4 months venting season (Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct), when little heat or A/C is used. During heating season, the best way to maintain comfortable relative humidity is Passive Moisture Generation through showers, dishes, laundry, houseplants, etc. Setting a central heating system’s mechanical humidifier above +25% ambient can cause excessive condensation (dew drops) in pre-1970s empty side walls and under-insulated attics. To control humidity in the spring and fall venting months, keep windows open, and ensure your rain gutters aren’t clogged. Portable basement dehumidifiers are ineffective, according to the manufacturer, unless the exterior temperature is above 65° and the unit is set in the center of the room. Moisture is only an issue at above 60% relative. Dehumidifiers set lower than 50% use excessive energy and may run continuously, causing heat build up or even a fire.

Most basement air ducts are not foil-taped and mastic-sealed. This causes, on average, 20% to 35% of the duct air to leak into the basement. During the heating and A/C seasons, this actually helps control humidity. David Linn Cook 30 Year MN Resident Weatherization Expert

Healing Autoimmune Disease Naturally
The Joint Chiropractic Newtown Square
Through Chiropractic glands, arteries, brain, nerves, lungs, the digestive tract, joints and eyes. Sometimes, there is swelling, redness and pain throughout the body, with increased inflammation in these areas. There can also be loss of function in some body parts as well.
How Can Chiropractic Help? Chiropractic and autoimmune diseases are connected in that spinal misalignments can put pressure on your nervous system, and interfere with your brain's ability to tell your body to fight illness. Correcting such issues can improve your immune function. When a chiropractor locates, analyzes and corrects the misalignments that are putting pressure on your nerves, it allows your body to work at its highest potential, thus improving immune function. Also, a qualified chiropractor will be able to remove stiffness and pain you may be feeling in your joints as a result of your autoimmune disease. NS
It’s highly likely you’ve heard one of the latest health buzzwords: “Autoimmune Disease.” Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, and more are caused by an autoimmune reaction in the body. Occurrences are skyrocketing: It’s estimated that approximately 22 million people are affected by this classification of disease, and the numbers are escalating very quickly.
What Is Autoimmune Disease? These conditions are diseases of very severe and chronic inflammation. When the body is inflamed over a long period of time, it sends off an immune response. If left go, it ends up attacking your body’s healthy tissues and cells. In the US, autoimmune disease has become an epidemic. Autoimmune disorders now fall in the top 10 leading causes of death in women, and costs around $120 billion/year in health care.
What Causes Autoimmune Disorders? There is really no known explanation as to why patients have these diseases; however, possible explanations given include any bacteria or virus left untreated, chemical irritants, decreased exit pathways, environmental pollutants, or overuse of prescription drugs. Profound and debilitating fatigue is the most common complaint reported among individuals with autoimmune disease. People who suffer from these conditions are affected in almost any area of the body, including muscles, skin,

Ryan Gray / Oppenheimer & Co. Your Experienced Guide in a Complex Financial World by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com
In an increasingly complex world, it’s important to carefully manage your financial needs and resources. If your financial world (assets, investments, insurance needs) is already complex or if you’re hoping to soon need someone to help you successfully enter and journey through a complex financial world, look no further than our local financial expert, Ryan Gray.
Oppenheimer & Co. Financial Advisor Ryan Gray (right) with his Associate Sean McAneney
Ryan grew up in New York City, and always aspired to work on Wall Street. For college, he decided to attend Villanova University because of their top-notch business school and extensive Wall Street network. In 1997, he graduated with a B.S. in Finance. He then returned to New York and worked for 10 years as a trader on large equity trading desks. That was a wild-and-crazy but very eye-opening education in how to invest money. Ryan specialized in Emerging Markets, which required him to travel extensively in Latin America. In 2005, Ryan married his wife Kristin, who’s from Wynnewood. In 2006, they moved from NYC to Newtown Square, and Ryan began working for Merrill Lynch, providing money management and investment advisory services for institutional clients. During that time, he started feeling more drawn to working directly with individuals and families. In 2011, he opted to join Oppenheimer & Co., where he continued working with institutional clients and also began helping families and individuals with their wealth management process and financial goals. Oppenheimer & Co. is a leading global full-service brokerage and investment bank that serves over 1,000 Financial Advisors in 94 branch offices across the United States. Ryan decided to join Oppenheimer because of its “small company feel but with the resources of a larger bank.” He runs his own financial advisory services business while Oppenheimer supports his ability to provide his clients with access to any investment necessary for their risk tolerance and goals without having to use a pre-packaged big firm’s investment platform. Ryan’s business is centered on building financial plans for individuals and families, and then working with them to attain the goals they have identified. He feels that by starting with a plan, they are able to manage risk, avoid unnecessary taxes, and build an investment portfolio that is comfortable for his clients. These plans are living documents, as periodic updates are needed to account for life changes that occur. By having a plan, these events become very manageable and less of a burden on his clients.

Ryan enjoys working with a diverse mix of clients, from young families and individuals who are just starting to accumulate wealth, to those who are thinking about whether they’re prepared to retire, as well as retirees who are trying to make their assets last through their retirement years. As an Oppenheimer Financial Advisor, Ryan aligns each client’s unique goals, values, and needs with holistic planning and design of investment and insurance strategies. He uses an in-depth discovery process that leads to a true understanding of each client’s specific situation, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Then he uses and leverages Oppenheimer’s resources and leadership to protect and grow his clients’ assets and solve their complex financial issues so they can pursue and achieve their financial goals.

Ryan and Kristin have three children ages 8-11. They all participate in several community youth sports programs in which Ryan is very involved. For the past four years, he has served as President of the Wayne Wildcats (the Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer Association for Radnor and Tredyffrin Easttown). He also coaches youth basketball and lacrosse teams. From the exciting and competitive world of Wall Street to the relatively simpler, slower and family-oriented pace of Newtown Square, Ryan Gray feels he now does what he finds most satisfying and rewarding: Sitting across from his clients and having conversations about their financial goals, and educating them about and helping them decide on their best investment and money-management options. Ryan is ready, eager and eminently qualified to serve as your financial world guide. NS

New Year’s Resolution to Lose Weight? What You Need to Know! When deciding to lose weight, many people often make the mistake of adopting strategies that make them lose not only body fat mass (weight) but just as much lean body mass (muscle). They often simply become smaller versions of their unaesthetic selves. They occupy less space, the scale tells them they weigh less, and their doctor might even congratulate them for being closer to their “healthy weight.” But they aren’t looking any better and they may even become weaker, results they certainly are not seeking.
The number one priority when attempting to lose fat should be to keep the muscle you have. Losing muscle mass should be unacceptable! Losing muscle will make it harder to look good when losing the fat, and also make it harder to lose fat because muscle tissue is metabolically responsible for most of the fat you’ll lose. Ten pounds of muscle burns 50 calories per day even at rest. If you lose 10 pounds of muscle, you’ll burn 50 fewer calories per day. Burning 350 fewer calories per week can make a significant difference in the long run. So even though you now weigh less, your body, arms and legs are mushy. You’ve become less efficient at burning calories, and you’re weaker. Your muscle fibers have atrophied to the extent that fat has developed between the fibers, creating visceral fat (which isn’t good, by the way), hence the myth: Muscle turns to fat. Also, the diet you’ve been on is lacking the proper amount of protein to even support the muscle you used to have let alone the muscle you need to create a metabolic burning machine. It’s not only important to maintain muscle when dieting, it’s vital! When you have more muscle mass, you can lift more weight and train harder, which increases the number of calories you burn during a workout, which makes your heart work harder and improves your cardiovascular conditioning.

Here are the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose fat (weight): • Doing fasted cardio • Lifting lighter weights for more reps • Doing moderate-intensity steady-state cardio • Doing everything perfectly and right from the start • Increasing training volume and doing more exercises • Eliminating carbohydrates from your diet • Working out 7 days a week What you need to do: • Take it slow. You’re in a marathon, not a sprint. • Be realistic about time in the gym (days, hours, etc.). • Get an assessment by a professional. • Find the right gym that meets your needs. • Start to hydrate and increase your protein intake. • Stay committed!

What’s Trending for Carpets in 2020
If you’re gearing up for some changes in 2020 and freshening up your home is one aspect that you feel like working on, one project that will make a big impact is installing or changing your carpets. This year, we’ll see a continuance of color, texture and pattern playing a role in the selection of carpet. Patterns will continue to reflect international style, with an emphasis on Morocco. The intertwined lines herald from an ancient time but add a modern arabesque feel to the carpets. The geometric carpet trend should last beyond 2020. Think
classy and subtle, not large and loud. Animal prints will also continue trending into the 2020s. They can definitely make a big statement, but going in the direction of an area rug will define your spaces so that you don’t think jungle all over. Floral patterns aren’t the first print people might consider, but think vines. And yes, floral can look modern and refreshed. The fleur-de-lis pattern is timeless and won’t go out of season or retro. Patterns can have an Asian flair or the look of watercolor prints. Try to find a print that is not too busy, to avoid clashing with furniture or wall color.

Texture is another factor to consider when purchasing carpet. The most popular textured carpet sold is the twisted pile carpet, which comes in a variety of colors to match most decors. This type of textured carpet has yarn that has been tightly twisted and the loops are cut to achieve the finished style. It’s available in a large range of pile height and density, to fit any budget. Beige is still the most popular color that any carpet comes in, but there are plenty of colors and shades to suit all tastes.
For those of us old enough to remember shag rugs and carpets, there’s now a similar modern style, thick, soft and luxurious, like a plush robe you wrap yourself up in after a shower or bath. Think how that would feel as you step on it in your bedroom. Don’t rule it out. Check it out! Whatever carpet style you’re looking for, there are plenty of options that will make your home cozy and feeling new to you. NS

History Spotlight
Randal Pratt, Quaker Farmer by Doug Humes A few years ago, I was given an old book on Quaker history. Inside was the signature of the book’s owner, Randal Pratt. I immediately thought “Who was Randal Pratt? Today, with a laptop and the internet, the answer is usually literally close at hand. So off I went, in search of Randal Pratt. He was born in 1801 on his family’s farm, the 10th of 11 children of David Pratt and Lydia Hoopes, near Goshen Friends Meeting, still standing by the intersection of Rte 352 and Paoli Pike. He no doubt visited his grandfather Pratt’s farm, which is still welcoming visitors today, at the Colonial Plantation at Ridley Creek State Park. The Pratts moved to Newtown, where Randal’s mother died in 1836. That event cast a pall over Randal’s marriage to Mary G. Lewis of Newtown in 1837, at the Quaker Meeting House. Randal brought his bride back to a 750-acre farm along Crum

Creek, in the northwest corner of Marple Township, where they raised eight children. Randal was industrious: In addition to operating the farm and an adjacent mill, and reading Quaker history (over 900 pages!), he came up with an improvement to a horse rake and patented it in 1856. Randal died in 1866, at age 64. He is buried near his parents at Newtown Square Friends Meeting. His farmhouse, described in 1920 as “one of Delaware County’s historic homes, was knocked down in 1931 when a dam was erected on Crum Creek, flooding the entire Pratt farm, to create Springton Reservoir.

Dance in the Digital Age: How Exploring the Past Connects Us to the Present
To say that teaching dance these days is drastically different from what most instructors experienced in their youth is a bit of an understatement. From Instagram to TikTok, YouTube to Dubsmash, it’s more likely than not that you’ve found your teen giggling and jumping around in the basement, learning the latest dance challenge, recording it, and hoping to make it to the “For You” page. If all of this app talk has your head spinning, you’re not alone! Keeping up with the trends and sometimes not-so-safe viral challenges poses quite a dilemma both in and out of the

classroom. And while dance teachers want to make their classes current and relevant to this digital generation, they must also help their students become well-rounded dancers by teaching, explaining and showing them that their present always contains the past. The origins and roots of dance are centered around culture and the fabric of our society. Dance has often been used as a way to understand diversity, values, social change, rebellion, happiness and connection. But as dance has evolved and become “virtually” accessible, we fear that some of its history has been lost. Take for instance The Charleston. Although it’s most commonly known as a step from the 1920s that has found its place among many genres of dance today, its origin dates back hundreds of years to the Ash-Antes Peoples of Africa. According to www.StreetSwing.com, the Charleston dance evolved during the Ragtime-Jazz period but it was performed as early as 1903 in the Southern States. By the 1920s, with the end of World War I and the passage of the 19th Amendment, women (Flappers) were free to move their heels and kick their legs, in celebration of the dawn of a new era. So, although we can teach The Charleston by simply showing and explaining the steps, learning the history of this iconic movement is what gives it meaning and connection. It allows a dancer to understand the significance and appreciate the journey, which in turn lends itself to a more meaningful performance. It is, no doubt, tough these days to keep up with the lightningfast world we live in. But beyond the apps, challenges and trending topics, we have the ability and responsibility to give our dancers the opportunity to take a few steps back to bring them forward. NS
Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System
2. Directional Drilling System
Digging Down to The Sewer Main
Underground Horizontal Drilling
Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.
Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
