The Shaak Family:

This spring, have some fun meeting Seth Pancoast by phone when you need to have your mulch delivered to your home. Seth’s ancestors first came to Marple Township at the same time, on the same ship that brought William Penn to Philadelphia! Seth’s stories are worth the price of a yard of mulch. And you get the mulch too! (See Seth’s first spring ad on page 26.) Two other springtime Sponsors who also know mulch, and more related garden and landscape, are TJ Warner, Owner of JHL Landscaping, and Steve Mostardi, both Newtown Square originals who proudly support Newtown Square residents. JHL Landscaping provides all manner of landscaping for homeowners in our region. Not only grass cutting, mulch laying and tree trimming, but also for small to major landscape and hardscape design initiatives. Patios, walkways, pool areas, decks, fences, JHL does it all. And JHL offers its design ideas based on the best use of a homeowner’s available land and budget. Let’s all take on JHL’s challenge for 2021: To entertain outdoors more in 2021. (See JHL Landscaping’s ad on page 22.) And don’t let spring pass by this year without a visit to Mostardi Nursery, right here in Newtown Square. Ask yourself: When was the last time I went to Mostardi’s? If never, skip the big box and make Mostardi’s your springtime destination location for seed, plantings and gardening tools. Go meet Steve Mostardi and learn from a Newtown Square icon, how to make spring show off this year around your property. (See Mostardi Nursery’s ad on pg. 15.) Let’s March into spring by reaching out to one of our hometown Sponsors after enjoying this first spring issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors that I know you’ll enjoy.

I want to stop shoveling snow and start shoveling mulch. And I’m looking forward to seeing the crocus popping up and the forsythia popping out. With that in mind, I can’t help but give a shout out to our senior advertising Sponsor, Seth Pancoast, the elder, who has been delivering mulch in our region for more years than most have lived in Broomall.

We’re looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and nonprofit organizations to feature in our magazine. To nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature

Heather and Jamie Shaak

The Shaak Family: Anchored in Love, Family, Faith and Friends by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com

We would like to thank

for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. Meet the Shaak Family: Jamie, Heather, Carter and Ella. From salty air and sand in their hair, to ski slopes and Scottsdale, this family has got what it takes to fully appreciate family time mixed with fun! Jamie was born and raised just down the road in Ridley. He graduated from Ridley High School where he played basketball for the Green Raiders. He is also a proud 2012 inductee to the Ridley Township Basketball Hall of Fame. If you grew up in Ridley, you probably knew a few of Jamie Shaak’s siblings. It would be hard not to because Jamie is one of eight, with five brothers and two sisters. In fact, if you live in Delaware County today, you probably know a Shaak or two, because they all still live within driving distance of each other. Jamie stayed local after high school and attended Cabrini College. He continued his basketball career with the Cabrini Cavaliers and worked in Cabrini’s Business Development office. Jamie then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a minor in Marketing. After living in West Conshohocken for a few years, he headed out west to Silicon Valley, to work for an internet start-up company. Jamie’s career then led him to Arlington VA, but eventually his heart brought him back home to be closer to his family. Jamie is currently the Senior Vice President of Sales for Oliver Technology Corporation, which develops collection litigation software. “I’ve always been interested in technology,” said Jamie. “It’s very satisfying to work with an organization that develops software to help solve business problems and drive efficiencies that help companies become more successful.” Being one of eight siblings is impressive, but not as impressive as being one of nine, like Heather is! So, if you grew up in 6

Southampton Bucks County, you surely knew at least one of the Rupprecht kids. Heather has five sisters and three brothers who, like Jamie’s family, are close-knit and live locally. She attended Archbishop Wood High School where she was active in the Drama Club. Heather then earned her Associate degree in Business from Bucks County Community College. Prior to having children, she worked for Brokerage Concepts, Inc., a third-party administrator in health insurance as a Stop Loss Coordinator, handling catastrophic cases in the claims department. These days, you’ll find Heather volunteering for her children’s school fundraisers and local community events. She also enjoys tapping into her creative and crafty side. She is always up for a project, whether it be chalk-painting frames and furniture or designing and making custom costumes for her daughter’s dance studio. Jamie enjoys coaching for several area basketball programs and has fond memories of coaching his son’s Newtown Edgmont Little League team. Heather and Jamie love doing home projects together and recently completed a mudroom makeover including re-tiling the floor. Jamie and Heather first met in Sea Isle City, NJ, in the summer of 1998, when the shore houses they were each renting with friends were literally one door away. Heather and her friends were on the bottom floor of the duplex and Jamie and his buddies shared the top. Although they didn’t start dating seriously for a few years, the flame stayed alive. “I was always

intrigued and excited by Jamie’s spontaneity and energetic personality,” said Heather. “So, for our first date, in true Jamie fashion, he took me on a day trip to Washington, DC, for a funfilled adventure of sightseeing and a visit to the Smithsonian.” Heather and Jamie’s relationship continued to blossom, and on Christmas Eve 2004, he popped the question. But Jamie had a few little tricks up his sleeve first. In the weeks leading up to the big day, he joked that he was going to splurge and get Heather a vacuum cleaner for a Christmas gift. Deep down, she was hoping for a ring. It seemed as though Jamie wasn’t kidding when it came time to exchange gifts. Sure enough, Heather peeled the wrapping paper off the largest box in the bunch to reveal the Cadillac of vacuums, a Dyson. Heather said, “But as I opened the box, I saw that instead of a vacuum inside, there was a jewelry box that held a beautiful princess cut diamond engagement ring!” What Heather also didn’t know at the time was that Jamie had hidden a video camera that captured the whole proposal. Clips from that video were later incorporated into their wedding video. So, with what Heather described as her “circle of trust” on her hand, wedding plans got under way. Because Jamie and Heather met at the beach, they wanted to tie the knot at the spot where it all began. With the location set, it was time to invite guests. But such lists can get pretty lengthy when you’re both from large families, so the couple decided to keep it to immediate family and closest friends. They were married at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Sea Isle City, on a gorgeous

late-September day in 2005. After the ceremony, they were to head to the Avalon Yacht Club, but not before one more surprise from — you guessed it — Jamie! Unbeknownst to Heather, Jamie had arranged a romantic boat ride to the reception with his beautiful bride. Heather recalls, “Our wedding day was beautiful and intimate, filled with love and salt air.” First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Carter, the oldest of Jamie and Heather ’s two children. Carter, an 8th-grade Distinguished Honor Roll student at Devon Prep,

Resident Feature loves sports, science, music and coding. He is also one of the few people on this planet who can actually solve a Rubik’s Cube! Carter recently received his black belt in karate, and is looking forward to running track for his school this spring. In 2019, he placed 5th in the Long Jump at the Archdiocesan Championship finals, by landing an impressive 15' 5½". Like his parents, Carter loves the beach and can be found entertaining fellow beachgoers with front flips and twisting back flips. Ella, a 7th-grade student at the Academy of Notre Dame, is a smart, kind and talented young lady. She has been dancing since the age of two; is a member of Notre Dame Academy’s dance team; and recently competed on her dance studio’s competition company. She trains in ballet, pointe, modern, tap and jazz, and has received numerous regional and national awards including one for her tap solo performance. Ella is crafty like her mom, and loves to bake. But she also loves fishing and camping outside with her dad and Carter. Every summer, you’ll find Ella at the beach, riding bikes, dancing and swimming with her friends and cousins. She’ll occasionally stop moving and grooving to enjoy an “Ella Original” smoothie or acai bowl. Raising Ella and Carter in an active, safe and close-knit community was a priority for Heather and Jamie, and that’s why they chose to settle down in Newtown Square. “We knew we wanted to live in a town rich with history and a true community feel with great schools, recreational activities and a great parish, like St. Anastasia’s,” said Jamie. “We found it all right here.” Heather recalled the day they first moved into their new neighborhood. “We were amazed at just how active this community is!” She says that on any given day, you’ll see families walking, running and biking together. As much as the Shaak family loves spending time with their relatives and friends here in Newtown Square, their zest for adventure has them frequently hitting the road. Jamie and Heather recently built a home of their own in Sea Isle, where they fill their summer days with beach time, biking, corn hole games, happy hours with friends and extended-family fun.

( L-R ): Heather, Carter, Ella and Jamie Shaak at Ridley Creek State Park

When things cool down in the winter months, Jamie, Heather and the kids hit the slopes at Elk Mountain while staying with nearby family and cousins. And when they really want to turn up the heat, they pack their bags for Scottsdale, Arizona, to stay at their favorite resort and enjoy the pools, waterslides and hiking in Red Rock State Park. It’s inevitable that when you collectively have 17 siblings and countless cousins for your kids, family comes first. But when you work hard to create opportunities for them all to enjoy life and laughter together, that’s a win. When it’s on the beach? A win-win!

Senior Living 101 Navigating the waters of senior living can be overwhelming and confusing. Because of the wide variety of senior housing options, it’s helpful to learn about the differences before you start looking. Here’s a primer to get you started. Independent Living Community (IL): A multi-unit community usually available as a rental. Most ILs offer social and recreational opportunities including 1–2 meals a day, housekeeping, transportation and home health care services, some or all of which may be at an additional cost. Personal Care or Assisted Living Community (PC/AL): They provide a special combination of housing, personalized sup-

Memory Care (MC): MC offers specialized programs for residents who suffer from cognitive decline. Programs and activities are planned with dementia care in mind. Overall room sizes are smaller because these residents don’t spend much time in their individual rooms. For residents’ safety, all MC facilities are secured with fences and alarms.

Understanding Senior Living Options Can Be Overwhelming and Confusing

Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) for Residential Long-Term Care/Nursing Home: Medicare generally does not cover longterm stays in a nursing home. Most people who enter nursing homes begin by paying for their care out-of-pocket. As you use your resources (like bank accounts and stocks) over a period of time, you may eventually become eligible for Medicaid.

A Free, Personalized Senior Housing Placement Service For:

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC): A community that offers residences with several levels of assistance, including IL, PC/AL, skilled nursing, and home care all within one campus. CCRCs typically require a large buy-in or entrance fee as part of the long-term contract between the resident and the community.

portive services and health care to meet the needs of those who do not require full-time skilled nursing but do need help with activities of daily living (ADLs). PCs and ALs offer apartments that vary in size, and also social and recreational opportunities, three meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, and transportation.

Personal Care Home: A licensed residence that provides a watchful environment and personal services to seniors who require varying degrees of supervision and protective care. These homes are smaller, with 2 - 8 residents, and usually offer a shared or private bedroom and shared bathrooms. Residents typically gather at a dining-room table, to eat home-cooked meals in a homey atmosphere. Personal Care Homes are especially good for individuals who need a lot of care and who have difficulty socializing in large groups. Remember: No family has to go through a senior living transition alone. Senior Living industry experts can help guide you in the direction that’s best for you or your loved one; take you on tours of communities; answer your questions; and be your advocate. N S

The March Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Noah Curry, a Senior at Devon Preparatory School! Noah received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying his award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. In the seven years Noah has attended Devon Prep, he has eagerly participated in many school-sponsored and also family-initiated service activities and programs that benefit people of all ages in the Philadelphia area. Noah has served as an assistant at some schools and mental health facilities; planted trees to beautify the community; collected clothing and other items for Veterans; visited the sick in nursing homes; played cards with residents in assisted living facilities; and prepared and packaged food for food banks and for direct distribution to the hungry. Noah frequently uses his singing talent to create enjoyment for others. He has performed in many of his school’s plays and musicals. Now a long-time member in his school’s Choral Tide vocal group, Noah demonstrates leadership by mentoring younger and newer group members, and encouraging them to feel more confident about sharing their time and talent for the benefit of the group and their audiences. Noah, an Honor Student in Devon Prep’s challenging curriculum, loves to draw and is considering a career in Digital Arts and Animation. That may be a great way to serve others for this fine young man who “has a gift for making people feel good about themselves” and who values friendship so highly that during the pandemic, he helped his friends stay in touch and not be discouraged by organizing group outdoor social activities, online game nights and Zoom gatherings. Congratulations again, Noah, from your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors! May your Devon Prep years inspire you to continue to share your time and talents with many others in college and beyond!

How to Help a Grieving Friend Walking beside a friend who has lost a loved one is no small task. It’s a journey that will test you, and at times, have you feeling helpless because you can’t take away their pain. As difficult as the road ahead will be, there are a few things you can do to offer your friend comfort, hope and healing. Show Up Don’t say “Let me know if you need anything.” Under normal circumstances, many people aren’t comfortable asking for help because they don’t want to burden others. When people are grieving, their normal ability to make decisions is overwhelmed by intense painful emotions. This is your time to step up by taking care of the things you know they need. It could be a simple trip to the grocery store, delivering a favorite meal or lending a helping hand with the yardwork. Now is the time to talk less and do more.

Listen Sometimes people just need someone who will sit with them and listen. Your friend may want to talk about how they’re feeling or just share stories of their loved one. In either case, it’s important to remember to say less and listen more. Of course it is hard to accept and acknowledge that your words cannot fix this or make it all better, but your friend will appreciate your silence more than you know. When grief can be expressed verbally, and without judgement, space is created for good feelings such as acceptance and peace of mind.

Remember the Little Days Everyone remembers the big days: the holidays, the anniversaries, the birthdays and most especially the day their loved one died. Be that friend who remembers the little days. Share the stories and the meaningful moments of the days that their loved one lived. And don’t worry, you won’t be ruining your friend’s day if you send a random text or pick up the phone. It just may very well make their day a bit brighter!

Special Moments Captured Sierra Clark Photography

Be There for the Big Days Your friend may not want to celebrate the big days, especially during that first year, and that’s okay. Let your friend decide if they want to skip the family festivities. Someday they may come back around, but allow your friend the space and encouragement to navigate this new path. By offering your compassion, understanding and support, your grieving friend will begin — when they’re ready — to trust that their pain and sadness will eventually be replaced by joy from memories of happier days.

Bringing People Together In Newtown Square with National Honors People ask me when, why and how I was able to launch Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Three years gets us to the when. And as for the why, you know our mission and motto: To be Bringing People Together in Newtown Square. We do it by means of what has come to be called social media in print, or as we simply call it, Newtown Square’s hometown magazine. As far as how I was able to launch this magazine, my answer is usually unexpected to most who ask, thinking it was my own investment, or years of involvement in local organizations,

$20

Our hometown magazine and our sister publication, Marple Friends & Neighbors, combined for a remarkable top honor among all of Best Version Media magazines. Humbly I share this because the honor belongs to us all, represented by yours truly, who has been named Best Version Media’s #1 Publisher of 2020 among its BVM’s Publishers of hundreds of hometown magazines. First, I needed Best Version Media, the fastest-growing print media company in North America. Now publishing hundreds of hometown magazines like ours, it was BVM that picked us. BVM picked Newtown Square as a hometown to back, and BVM backed me to serve as the Publisher for our hometown magazine, which launched in 2018. Yes, we first needed BVM, but BVM is not the answer to how our magazine came to be for the residents of Newtown Square. If you’re a regular reader, you know how. I’ll tell you again but first let me tell you of the great honor that has come to us, made possible by those responsible for how our magazine became possible. And by honor, I mean a national honor that Newtown Square shares.

Number 1 in North America. That honor brings me to the how all our magazines came to be. And again, if you’re a regular reader, you know how: It’s our advertising Sponsors who made this magazine possible. That’s how our magazine came to be: Our advertising Sponsors who willingly decided to use their limited marketing budgets on us, to show us how much Newtown Square means to their business and how much we mean to them. Their advertising in our magazine is not only how we paid the expense of mailing your hometown magazine to you for free every month; it also paid for our writers, designers, graphics, ink and paper, which you know from the quality of our magazine, is not inexpensive.

Thank you! I am humbled by the loyalty and support of our readers and our Sponsors whose ads you see on our pages. They made it possible for this magazine to arrive at your door every month for free.

My hope for 2021 is that we can find more advertising Sponsors to help our magazine grow in page count so we can bring you even more features about Newtown Square residents, organizations and happenings every month. What to Expect from a TOP-NOTCH ROOFING CONTRACTOR Need a new roof to fix one or more leaks? Has your existing roof outlived its typical lifespan? Would a new roof significantly improve your home’s curb appeal? Regardless of WHY you may soon select a roofing contractor, WHO you select can dramatically affect how satisfied you are during and after your roofing project. Satisfaction is an opinion or feeling of having all your expectations fully met. As a roofing customer, your expectations will be met — or perhaps not met — by the behaviors and conversations of roofing contractors who provide estimates and by the contractor whom you select for the project. From start to finish, your level of satisfaction will be based on how well or poorly a roofing contractor (or any business) demonstrates these Five Customer Expectations. 1. Be Responsive, On Time, Honest and Transparent No response when you request an estimate and a contractor showing up late or not at all with no valid explanation are serious causes for concern. Everyone’s time is valuable, and businesses that don’t recognize that or who don’t seem fully honest may not deserve to get your business. 2. Listen and Empathize with Your Concerns Notice whether you’re given time to fully explain your concerns and goals for the roofing project. Are you allowed to ask all your questions, and are you satisfied with the answers? Is the conversation a two-way street or does it seem you’re being treated simply as another possible sale?

3. Identify and Justify All Recommended Solutions To make a wise decision about which roofing contractor or roofing solution to select, you need to be informed. You need details about the proposed products and clear justifications about their efficiency and cost. If several price options are offered, the PROs and CONs of each option should be clearly defined. And the contractor should be completely comfortable with you asking questions until you feel fully satisfied. 4. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver When selecting a roofing contractor, you should receive in writing a detailed description that includes how they will manage the project and what its timeline will be. Such detail sets your expectations that can be met or even exceeded if all factors involved (weather, product availability, staffing) perfectly align. If you receive no detailed project description, there’s no promise made and no possibility they’ll over-deliver. 5. Make the Project as Painless as Possible Roofing projects are usually messy, noisy, and sometimes inconvenient. But all that plus the expense are justified because your roof is arguably the most important part of your home. A topnotch roofing contractor does and says everything required to be easy to work with and gives you great reasons during and after the project to be proud and glad you selected them. NS

Tips and Trends for Spring Home Decor

Interior Designer Krissa DeGenarro Wichser, Owner of The Blue Octagon

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Krissa DeGennaro Wichser Spring is on the way! Can you feel it? Soon it will be time to open the windows and feel the fresh air rush in. Flowers will bloom, our days will get longer and our moods a little lighter. Spring is the season of new beginnings and we are all ready for it! This year, more than ever, our homes have been transformed into multi-purpose pods of learning, working and playing. But with hope on the horizon, don’t you think it’s time to spruce up your space to reflect fresh starts and better days ahead? For some advice about how to liven up your living space, we talked with Newtown Square resident and Interior Designer Krissa DeGenarro Wichser. Krissa, Owner of The Blue Octagon, recommends bringing in new, bold colors. “My clients want their homes to feel inviting, safe and energized at the same time,” she says. “They want to sit on their sofas surrounded by

decor that makes them feel good.” Krissa says citrus hues like yellows, corals and pinks will be very popular this spring as well as soft metallic lamps and accessories. For those who might want to keep their space more neutral, she suggests experimenting with elements like raw wood, which brings organic beauty and warmth to any space. Krissa is also a fan of layering textures. “By mixing linens, leathers and velvets, you can keep things neutral but still interesting!” You don’t have to do a complete makeover of what you already have to spruce up for spring. Adding color, textures

and accessories can be as simple as picking up a few pillows that “pop” and fun accessories at your local shop. Over at Bunny Hare’s, Owner Anne Marie Hare says her customers are not sacrificing comfort for color. Sales of scented candles and cozy blankets are brisk, but colorful pillows and wall decor are also very popular. “Our customers want to make their homes

happy and bright,” she says, “while also relaxing and comfortable.” Another easy way to add some color is to paint some old pieces of furniture like Krissa Wichser recently did with a client. “A client and I painted an old pine green chest a gorgeous shade of blue, and then we glazed it with a black wax,” recalls Krissa. “The result was stunning and very inexpensive!” Looking forward to brighter, happier and healthier days can lift anyone’s spirits. Why not fill your home with beautiful, colorful reminders? It’s time to let the fresh air in! NS

What to Do Outdoors in Spring for a Lovely Summer Landscape As winter season comes to an end, and warmer temperatures invite us outdoors again, we notice that our lawns and landscaping are often in desperate need of attention. Spring clean up and mulching are great ways to get your landscape ready for the upcoming spring and summer months. You can eliminate tree and leaf debris build-up that occurred since your final fall clean up and during the winter months by removing leaf/woody debris from turf areas and flower beds. As tempting as it may be to proceed with “the fun” of planting

new seasonal annual flowering plants, you must first weed and re-mulch your flower beds. Remember: Do not plant seasonal annuals until after the last frost of the season — usually after Mother’s Day. Consider adding an eye-catching pop of color near your front walkway and entrance to your home, in your garden beds/

borders, around your patio or deck, and at your pool area. Create some “eye candy” around your property by using window boxes and planters that hold colorful flowering plants and complementary vines. After your spring clean-up and planting are complete, it’s important to set up and stay on a monthly care program to properly care for your garden beds. By keeping up with those areas, you’ll create a well-manicured look for your home and yard for the entire season. The spring and summer months are the perfect time to move forward with your plan of action for a hardscape or construction design and installation. An outdoor living area brings relaxation and a wonderful escape from being in the house. It also adds beautiful curb appeal to your home. There are plenty of options to consider: Some of the most popular are fireplaces, outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens.

Newtown Square, PA

Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and stone for borders and edges are best installed between spring and fall. Landscape lighting can help showcase and accentuate those areas of design, allowing you to enjoy them not only during the day but during dusk and at night. Warmer days are right around the corner. Treat yourself to an enjoyable outdoor living experience this year by planning and taking action now! NS

Wedding Trends

for 2021

Weddings sure have changed over the last year. But one thing that has not changed is that no matter how big or small a wedding gathering may be, the bride and her bridal party still want to look their best. Over the last year, due to statewide restrictions on the size of any type of gathering, the “micro wedding” (30 or fewer guests but with all the bells and whistles of a larger wedding) has become quite popular. And suddenly, “back yard weddings” are

The good news is that the best salons have implemented health and safety procedures to provide bridal services in the salon or on site at your home or hotel. Those salons typically have a team of seasoned makeup artists and hairstylists who are experts at getting you all glammed up for your big day! To make your wedding day run as smoothly as possible, the salon team you choose should have plenty of references who rave about how the bridal party was able to relax and get pampered in the comfort of their chosen location. If that location is the Jersey shore, the Poconos or some other long distance from a salon you’re considering using, one of the first questions you should ask is if the bridal services team is willing to drive that far. The bridal team you select should also be constantly learning and practicing new techniques and styles, to make sure they stay on top of the newest trends. And the best bridal teams have a reputation for reliably showing up on time, ready to work and make your big day as enjoyable as possible even if they’ve got multiple weddings scheduled on the same weekend as yours. Being a beautiful blushing bride is not only still possible, it’s easy when you select a talented bridal services team that goes above and beyond to make your wedding day vision a reality. NS

the new cool! Brides are no longer finding it necessary to have the elaborate weddings we once had. Ultimately, they just want to marry the love of their life and look beautiful while doing it!

Living in Our Community Since the 1980s by Bob Blaisse Photo by Chris Stack

Did you know Don Johnson is an Eagle Scout? Not the Don Johnson of 1980s TV fame, Don Johnson of Marple Township fame, known for his service to youth. Yes, that Don Johnson who for more than 35 years has served as a Boy Scout leader in our community and is currently the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 315, chartered by St. Anastasia Church since 1947. Originally chartered as Troop 1, it was in the late 1960s that Boy Scouts of America, now Scouts USA, required “Larchmont Troop 1” to change its unit number from Troop 1 to Troop 315. A few years later, Don Johnson, a Boy Scout himself at that

time, stood on the parade field at Resica Falls Scout Reservation. Under a full moon, Johnson watched on live TV that “…the Eagle had landed” carrying Neil Armstrong, an Eagle Scout, to be the first man to walk on the moon. Months later, Johnson earned his own rank of Eagle Scout, taking his life-long pledge to always do his best, to use his training to be an example, and to influence for better Scouting.

In 1984 Don Johnson and his wife Joan moved to Broomall so their son Donny could begin first grade at St. Anastasia School. That year, Donny became a Cub Scout of Cub Pack 315. It was then that Donny's dad began his faithful service as a Scout Leader, first as Cub Pack Den Leader and later as Cubmaster of Pack 315. When Donny crossed over into Boy Scout Troop 315, his dad took over as Scoutmaster of Troop 315 and has continued in that leadership role for the past 32 years. Johnson has spent that time guiding Scouts ages 11 through 18 in camping, outdoor survival skills, respect of God and Country, nature, and the importance of giving cheerful service to their community. Since 1947 Troop 315 has been honored to have 65 Eagle Scouts, more than half of whom recall Don Johnson as their Scoutmaster. They reflect on fond memories when they achieved Scouting’s highest honor and rank, one which less than five of every one hundred Scouts nationally are able to achieve.

REASONS

to Get Excited About Downsizing

Change is hard for most of us. We like certainty and knowing what to expect. That is why moving, especially downsizing, can be emotionally challenging. By approaching your potential move with a perspective of opportunity, of looking towards “what’s next” instead of “what was,” your next move can be your next adventure.

Planning to move in 2021? LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN! Curious about your home’s value? Text “4TValues” to 59559 to find out!

Here are 4 ways downsizing can change your life for the better. 1. Reduce Your Amount of Physical Labor Owning a home that is larger than you need can be a physical drain. Mowing the yard every week, cleaning the gutters, cleaning multiple bathrooms, plowing the driveway — all of that adds up to hours of labor that can be exhausting. Imagine

owning a home where the yard was a fraction of the size, where you don’t have extra bathrooms to clean, or leaves to fish out of the pool that no one uses! 2. Reduce Your Expenses Snow plowing, grass cutting, cleaning, window washing… If you’re not doing these jobs yourself, you’re likely running up significant bills for someone else to do them for you. Heating, cooling, providing electricity and paying taxes for extra space that goes mostly unused is a big financial drain. If the benefits of owning the bigger home or property have started to outweigh the cost value to you, it might be time to consider looking for a smaller place.

4. Release the Chains of Your “Stuff ” We live in a culture that enjoys stuff: Buying stuff, selling stuff, earning stuff, giving stuff, winning stuff. How much more stuff can we stuff into our homes?! What good are the boxes piled up that haven’t been opened in 10 years, or the heirloom furniture that sits in the basement, or the five rakes in the garage when all you need is one or two? Release the stuff, give it to others who need it and can put it to good use, and enjoy the weightlessness of letting go of this “stuff ” to create space for what is next in your life. Once you don’t need to store so much stuff, you also will no longer need the space it took up. NS

3. Gain Time and Freedom What would you do with the additional time you save from caring for the chores mentioned above? What if you could walk out your door and go on a vacation without worrying that the sidewalks won’t be shoveled or the grass won’t be cut while you’re gone? Use your newfound freedom and time to do something fun! Travel more, learn a new hobby, spend more time with loved ones...the list goes on.

ARE YOU AN

IDEAL TEAM PLAYER? by Patrick Lencioni, Founder and President, The Table Group

Have you ever wondered what makes a person easy to work with? I’m convinced that there are three required virtues that make someone an ideal team player. The most important of those values is humility. The ultimate foundation of being a team player is a person being willing and able to put the team’s interests ahead of his or her own. Only a truly humble person can do this effectively. Most people recognize and define humility by contrasting it with arrogance, which, to an extent, is accurate. People who are boastful, proud,

egotistical and over-confident are certainly not humble, and they are poison on a team. Whether we’re talking about Little League Baseball, corporate leadership or emergency response, team members with big egos tend to bring down team performance by distracting attention away from the collective goals of the team and demotivating peers who resent their excessive need for attention. But some team members who are not arrogant lack humility, even if others around them don’t see it. Many of these people are beloved for their selflessness, modesty and support for others, but can’t be described as humble because they have an inaccurate, deflated understanding of their own talents and abilities. They hurt their teams by failing to contribute at the level that they could. But that’s not as bad as the people who, like them, discount their abilities, but don’t support and encourage their peers. These may be the most dangerous kind of “non-humble” team players.

Ideal team players, in addition to being humble and hungry, know how to understand their colleagues and work with them effectively. They can read a room and understand non-verbal cues, avoiding unnecessary problems that socially awkward people often create. Now, you may be asking, is an ideal team player perfect? Of course not. Even the best team player is going to have a tough day or week or moment from time to time, but those that work to develop their humility, hunger and people smarts will have a serious advantage on teams and in life. Other Resources: Pat’s TED Talk on becoming an ideal team player: www.ted.com/talks/patrick_lencioni_are_you_an_ideal_team_player The second virtue that is required of an ideal team player is hunger, the desire to work hard, make a difference and get things done. It’s not hard to understand why being hungry makes someone an asset on a team; a complacent person rarely makes a team great. However, hunger alone is not a good thing for a team, as it can be directed toward the benefits of the individual more than the team. Only when a person’s drive is applied to benefits of the greater good does hunger become a team asset. The third and final virtue of an ideal team player is something I call smarts. It has nothing to do with intelligence, however, but is all about social awareness and interpersonal common sense.

Kiddie pool with splash pad

Newly renovated courts

Club President Josh Kohn takes a lot of pride in the recent improvements and growth in membership. Together with an impressive volunteer board, Josh says, “I love seeing the results of all the hard work that our board, volunteers and staff have done. Our vision is to be an upscale yet affordable family swim and tennis club where our members and kids can escape for a few hours.” Josh is happy that his own family can experience all the programs and amenities the club has to offer. He and his wife both play on tennis teams, and their two boys enjoy competing on the swim and dive teams. Whether you want to get some exercise or unwind with your favorite book, St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club has something for everyone. In addition to their competitive swim and tennis teams, they are proud to have two full-time tennis pros who run over 20 hours of clinics every week. If keeping cool is what you want, members can do so in one of the three beautiful pools — the large pool for families, lap swimming and diving, the middle pool for kids to play in, and the zero-entry kiddie pool featuring a fountain and splash pad. Swim lessons are also available as is a Little Smashers activity day camp for children ages 4 - 12.

But take a look beyond the beautiful brochure and you will see that above all, St. Albans Swim & Tennis Club is built upon lasting memories and solid friendships. Long-time member Preston Tyrell says that some of his fondest memories are from the summers he spent there as a kid. “Now I bring my own kids to the pool,” said Preston, “where they have also learned to swim and play tennis.” Preston is just one of many members with the same sentiments. Andrew Howley’s family has been enjoying St. Albans for over 30 years. “My four grown children have wonderful memories of summers spent at the pool and snack bar with their friends, and now I get to relive it all with my grandson,” Andrew said. “This place still has the same comfortable family, neighborhood feel,” he added. So, no need to pack your bags, book a flight or rent a car to make memories. Spend your summer with your family and friends at Newtown Square’s very own poolside paradise! History Spotlight

Toll House No. 5 by Doug Humes

There was once a border between Marple and Newtown where people were held up every day. The highwayman who made travelers “stand and deliver” there? Toll House No. 5. The structure, a small roadside house with a large pole that blocked the street, was part of the West Chester Turnpike, connecting West Philadelphia and Newtown Square. There was no state highway department back then, so the roads were not well maintained. In winter, they were impassable with mud and ruts; in summer, with dust and ruts.

Each toll road had its own design for milestones Photo courtesy of the Marple Historical Society

In 1848, local businessmen decided to form a corporation to improve the road – initially using wooden planks. To pay for these improvements, a toll was charged, at five toll houses between Philadelphia and Newtown Square. An early history reported that in 1897, Toll House 5, near the 10th milestone, was being kept by William Edwards. When a traveler approached, he would stop at the “pike” that blocked his path. The toll keeper would come out, collect the toll, and then turn the pike, to allow the traveler to pass. The act gave rise to the name of this private road: a turnpike.

Shares in the Turnpike corporation were owned by local residents like Jane Pratt Photo courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society

Longtime resident Jan Elston tells two stories of her mother Janice Edgar’s memories of Toll House 5. As a young girl living in Newtown in the early 1900s, Janice recalled that her mother would give her money for errands in nearby Marple, including money for the toll. She and a friend would ride there on horseback. On their return, if no one was minding the toll gate, Janice and her friend would rush past the gate on their horses and use the money saved to buy candy. Janice also recalled that the old milestone was still visible then, and so when they would ride into the city to go

to market, when they passed the milestone that said “10 M to P,” they would look at each other and say “That’s a long time to hold it.” After 70 years of tolls, some vocal locals began in 1906 to call for “the freeing of the West Chester Turnpike for tolls.” That meant buying out the interests of the Turnpike Company. After pestering the state for years, the locals won: In Media, on April 5, 1918, the State and the County each paid the Turnpike Company $37,500. The officials then drove to Newtown Square, and headed east, telling each toll keeper that their job was over.
