The Importance of Exercise During the COVID-19 Pandemic

by Expert Contributor Michele Bello, CPT, General Manager of Retro Fitness Newtown Square

Exercising regularly is important for everyone during “normal” circumstances. In these unsettled times, exercise is essential in more ways than one.

Exercise boosts the immune system, reduces stress, prevents weight gain and improves sleep. Getting and staying as healthy as possible is always important and worth the time and the effort — and even more important this year than ever — so that your body is better prepared to fight off infections.

As we cope with the new coronavirus pandemic, social distancing and changes in everyone’s everyday schedules, every aspect of our lives has been turned upside down, and this often includes our workout routine.

These unsettled times have caused us all to be a little — or a LOT! — more stressed. We may even have gained a few extra “quarantine pounds.” Regardless, you can still safely participate in physical activity by exercising with your family, getting outdoors, using online fitness resources, taking a virtual class and setting exercise goals.

Our body was designed to move, and when movement is reduced slightly or greatly for short or long periods of time, health issues and symptoms can start to occur. So let’s get up and move! Here’s six no-excuse ideas for how to enjoyably make that happen:

1. Put on a good pair of sneakers and take 15 minutes to walk or jog.

2. Do as many jumping jacks as you can in 20 seconds. Repeat 8 times.

3. Take the push-up/squat challenge: 20 push-ups or 20 squats every day for the next 30 days.

4. Dance. Who doesn’t love to dance?!? Such a great stressreliever! And if you have children, make it a dance party!

5. Grab some canned goods and work your biceps and triceps.

6. Tackle some calorie-burning chores such as mowing the lawn, working in the garden, cleaning out the garage or closets. Take a look around your house and listen for what’s calling you to check off 2 TO-DOs at the same time!

It may take some effort to adjust to new fitness activities but regular physical activity will help optimize your health and well-being regardless of external local or global circumstances and conditions.
