Just Dance! 3 Fun Ways to Beat the Blues

When we move, we feel good; that is no secret. So, what happens when our world comes to a standstill and we find ourselves staring at screens all day? Fatigue, strain, stress and anxiety start creeping in, with the potential to wreak havoc on our physical and mental health. And it is not just happening to teens and adults. Many parents are finding their younger children are struggling with anxiety, sadness and behavior challenges.

The importance of both physical and mental well-being is at the forefront these days, and there are ways we can help each other stay healthy. Dance not only improves your heart health, muscle strength, balance, and coordination, it also reduces depression and anxiety. And you know what? You don’t even have to be good at it to reap the rewards! Just get up and move to start releasing those mood-enhancing chemicals in your brain and body!

That’s right: There are ways we all can benefit from stepping away from our screens. Here are 3 simple steps (pun intended), to get the family up and moving.

Turn Up the Volume!

Start your day with upbeat music. Involve the family by taking turns picking the playlist. No need to stress over putting one together. Apps like Spotify and Pandora have tons of mood-boosting ready-to-go selections.

Pop-Up Dance Parties!

Need a break from that meeting? Kids getting restless on a rainy day? There is no better way to beat the boredom than an impromptu dance party! Clear a spot in the living room and get down. Let the kids teach you a new dance move, then teach them one of yours. Guaranteed laughter right there!

Get Creative!

A quick online search for dance games will give you plenty of ideas for fun activities. A few examples are to use props around the house like ribbons and hula hoops. Flashlights can be fun when you turn off the lights, turn up the music and have a “spotlight” dance party. Or make a chart with each letter of the alphabet representing a different dance move. Have the kids dance their name or their favorite food.

By encouraging our kids to take time for fun, switch things up, and get moving, we are showing them that their physical and mental health is important. And guess what? Yours matters, too.
