Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form

Welcome to the Autumn term It’s been a great start to the Autumn term here at Bethnal Green Academy and we hope our Year 7s are settling into life and learning here at the Academy. Over the summer we were very proud of our Year 11 and 12 students who achieved a great set of exam results. 76% of students achieved five or more A* - C grades including English and Maths. 89% of students achieved five or more A*-Cs and it’s good to see many of them back with us in the Sixth Form. Our attendance was the highest in the borough for the second year running with a very impressive 96.6%. Keep it up BGA!

A farm favourite Bethnal Green Academy is a part of the London Farm Academy, a Soil Association project. The project is all about getting young people to visit Organic Farms and learn all about where their food comes from. On Thursday 19th September BGA students from Years 7–10 visited a dairy farm called Bore Farm in Kent. Students learnt how to

make homemade chutneys and explored the dairy farm where they saw calves from as young as a week old, cows that were ‘going for beef’ and cows that were just for milking. The farm staff commented that our students were great ambassadors for the Academy. Well done - and thank you to Ms Taylor, Mr Palmer and Mr Messam for arranging the farm visit.

A Dahlicious Day at BGA Last Friday, September 13th, was Roald Dahl Day and all at BGA had a fantabulous day. Ms Piccoli read The Witches to an enthralled Jackanory audience in the LRC at lunchtime. During Tutor Time and throughout the day students were quizzed on their knowledge of Roald Dahl and the winners received prizes.

Winning portraiture Winning work from some of BGA’s talented young artists in the 50 Children-50 Artists competition. The 50 Children, 50 Artists competition was organised by UK charity, Miracles. Its aim is to raise awareness of child poverty in Tower Hamlets. BGA students were invited to submit a portrait of themselves, a friend or family member. BGA winners Gabriele Atanasova, June Mendoza, Rahima Begum, Leonard McCombe, Humara Hoque and William Bowyer will have their portraits painted by leading UK artists. The finished portraits will be exhibited in December at the National Portrait Gallery. Well done to Simone Hill, Rominia Colucci and all the winning entrants. We look forward to seeing more of your fantastic work and hope it will inspire others to get creative!

BGA Kyaking Club Are you adventurous? Would you like to try something new? From half term BGA are offering an exciting opportunity for all years to attend a weekly kayaking club. Every Wednesdays after school we will travel from school to Laburnum boat club, Hackney. Top row: Portraits by Humara Hoque, Rominia Colucci. Contact Mr Oakley (PE) if you are interested in this fantastic opportunity.

Summer School Fun In August over 90 year six students attended the academy's summer school in preparation for their transition to BGA in September. 'Dragons' was the theme for the summer school and all students received a free copy of the novel by Cressida Cowell 'How to train your dragon'. Students participated in a wide variety of activities including learning some snippets of French, Spanish and Italian, carrying out exciting science experiments, solving mathematical equations, physical education games and baking delicious cakes! The event culminated in a fantastic performance to parents and carers on the last afternoon of the summer school. The feedback from all students was overwhelmingly positive, with all agreeing that they enjoyed the summer

school and felt more confident about about attending BGA. During the same two week period twenty new to the country students attend a summer school based in the Learning Resource Centre. The students came from a variety of countries including Bangladesh, Italy, Columbia, Peru and France. Students again participated in a wide variety of activities such as making 3 D shapes in maths and drama performances. The summer school focused on developing the students' English skills and building new friendships. It was a real success and something that we hope will become an annual event.

What the students said: 'I really enjoyed doing the performance at the end of the summer school' 'I now know lots of the teachers and have made new friends - I can't wait to start at the academy'
