Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form

A visit to Kew On Tuesday 1st October Year 11 Art students went to Kew Gardens. The trip was arranged by Ms Austin and her team as part of their GCSE Art course. They all had a great day and other visitors to the garden commented on how well behaved and creative our students were. The group came back with some interesting drawings having enjoyed a productive and creative day out.

It’s been a dramatic week We’ve had a dramatic start to the year with two fantastic events in the Main Hall. On Friday 27th September Year 11 drama students gave two short performances, the first about Rebellion and the second about the aftermath of a Tsunami. Both groups performed incredibly well and we look forward to seeing more from them soon. Photos on the top row.

Thursday October 3rd was National Poetry Day at BGA. During lunch time students wrote short poems and the Slam Poetry club performed their own poems brilliantly in front of a student audience and a panel of judges who were all extremely impressed.

Here at BGA we’re celebrating Black History Month with exciting activities including a special Film Club and a Poetry Day workshop. A group of Year 10 and 11 students attending 'The Annual Black Achievement Conference' held at London School of Economics (LSE).

Coffee and Cakes for a good cause

BGA Kyaking Club On Friday 27th September BGA students served up coffee and cakes in the LRC. All proceeds were donated to Macmillan Cancer. Thank you to all parents, carers, staff and students who dropped in for a morning treat.

Are you adventurous? Would you like to try something new? From half term BGA are offering an exciting opportunity for all years to attend a weekly kayaking club. Every Wednesdays after school we will travel from school to Laburnum boat club, Hackney.

Contact Mr Oakley (PE) if you are interested in this fantastic opportunity.

The chutney challenge Students from the Gardening Club made spicy tomato chutney from the tomatoes and chillies they have grown in the BGA garden. They chutney will be on sale at the BGA Farmers’ Market on October 23rd.

Science in the spotlight Word on the Street was that Year 13 Science students were dissecting hearts this week. We popped in to see for ourselves how they were enjoying their ‘hands-on’ Science lesson.
