Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form

Open House at BGA On Thursday 10th October BGA held its annual Open Evening Year 6 students came along with their parents and carers to see what our academy has to offer. Each faculty worked hard to organise engaging displays and activities to show them what life and learning is like at Bethnal Green Academy. The event was very well attended – the Main Hall was packed for Mr Keary’s talk. Ms Montgomerie awarded prizes for Best Faculty Area which went to Maths and MFL, Best Year Team Area which went to the Sixth Form and Best Display in the Street which was won by Art. Well done to everyone who made the Open Evening a big success and we look forward to seeing lots of our visitors starting their secondary education here at BGA in September 2014.

Marzipan and Mexico

Some of our year 7 and 8 linguists have been taking part in an exciting cultural project which has involved exploring the history and background of the 'El Día de Los Muertos' - Day of the Dead. In Mexico and in other regions of Spanish speaking Latin America, this day involves festivals, lively celebrations, and the sharing of food with family and friends. In the first session, students listened intently to a lecture delivered by Dr Genner Llanes-Ortiz, a Postdoctoral Researcher and Maya Associate from the Indigeneity in the Contemporary World Project. Our enthusiastic students wowed Genner with their intelligent questions and inquisitiveness. The second session was delivered by two community leaders from the Mexico Lindo Querido Project, who showed students how to make and decorate marzipan sugar skulls, a typical activity that children in Mexico participate in at school each year. There are still two sessions to go, and this Monday will see students involved in a poetry workshop, followed by Gautemalan Kite Making on Friday. We will soon be creating a display in the MFL area to showcase this fantastic learning experience for students and we welcome all staff and students to 'investigar, compartir y mirar'!

Cooking up a treat Every Saturday a group of Year 8 and Year 11 girls work together in food technology to produce a tasty meal. The girls work as team to produce healthy, balanced meals. Not only are their skills in the kitchen developing but they are building friendships and

developing positive relationships. The girls absolutely love the cooking club and will soon be producing a three course meal for family and friends!
