Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form

Trading Places Period 5, Thursday 21st November 2013. That was the day Mr. Anil Prasad traded (excuse the pun) his usual job of heading up Citi’s 1500 strong Foriegn Exchange and Local Currency Markets team to teach some of our own Sixth Formers. He delivered a ‘secrets of trading’ masterclass that shone a light on the modern world of finance. Our students grilled him during the Q&A and asked searching questions which ranged from “what are the ethical considerations you have to ponder before you put on trades?” to “how were you able to predict that the sentiment in Japan was finally changing after a 20-year recession?”. At the end of the day he felt suitably impressed with our students that he gave Arif Uddin his business card.

In all, the project was an overwhelming success. Being able to take students to a trading floor last week really galvanised their interest in all things finance and has catalysed their enthusiasm for learning. Such opportunities really do add value to our curriculum and enrich students profoundly, so I would like to thank all of those who contributed to make it happen.

Fantastic Fundraising

Year 10 and year 11 students organised and ran a bake sale in aid of Children in Need and raised a fantastic £65! Staff and students contributed with a variety of cakes and buns. The families of mid phase admissions students were invited to attend the event and the attendance was impressive. It was a great opportunity to welcome the new students and their families to BGA.

Helping out at St Hilda’s

BGA and Columbia Choral Celebration

Each Wednesday Ms. Warner and a group of BGA student volunteers walk to nearby St. Hilda’s East Community Centre to spend their lunchtime at the Older People’s Project. They play dominoes and chat, listening to stories and experiences from a different generation and talking about their own lives and aspirations. Our students are

attentive and respectful - fantastic ambassadors for the academy. The older people of St. Hilda’s enjoy their company and our students enjoy spending time with them and have invited them to come along for Christmas lunch here at BGA. Thank you to Ms. Warner for organising the visits and to our caring volunteers who give their time to help others.

Last Wednesday a group of pupils from Columbia Primary School joined BGA students in a Choral Celebration. They sang together beautifully and performed songs, with music from our own BGA band, for an audience from both schools.
