Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form

Fantastic Fundraising Fest Winterfest has been a great success with a range of fun, learning activities that have focused on raising money for the people of the Philippines who have been so badly affected by Typhoon Haiyan which struck their country in November. A big thank you to all those who have donated and supported our fundraising effort. This issue of Word on the Street celebrates some of the fantastic events and the amazing effort that has enabled BGA to exceed its fundraising target of £2500. Our heartwarming Christmas charity DVD, Little Love Mix is available from the academy. It is a wonderful short film featuring our students and their musical message. Any donations are gratefully received and can be made online at www.justgiving.com/bethnalgreenacademy. Aysha Aziz, Hunter Carte Rosson, Skylee-Marie Gardiner and Taylor White have collected over £250 from generous members of the public in Spitalfieds and Shoreditch. Well done to them for their fundraising effort!

Winter Fayre Fun The Winter Fayre was a great success! Stalls with gifts for sale, fun activities and the amazing and very popular advent calendar raffle. The event raised over £900. What a superb effort from students and staff and thank you to everyone who supported the Winter Fayre.

Well done to the two year 7 football teams who participated in the Arsenal FC football tournament. With 16 teams competing it was a fantastic achievement to have our B-team get to the semi-final and our Ateam win the tournament! They beat Cardinal Pole 3-1 in the final.

St Hilda’s Christmas lunch Over the past year a group of students have spent their Wednesday lunchtimes with the older peoples’ group at St. Hilda’s Community Centre. On the 4th December they invited the St. Hilda’s group to BGA for Christmas lunch. All the elderly people and staff really enjoyed themselves and the lovely meal that was prepared by Ms Hargreaves, Ms Warner and Ms Gullick and served by our student volunteers. Here’s what St. Hilda’s had to say about the day... “Everyone who came to your fantastic Christmas lunch said they had a really nice time, a fantastic lunch, and I can't stress enough how much they appreciate your students’ hard work.” Thank you to all students and staff who give their time to care for others in the community. St Hilda’s wrote to Ms Warner to say that “the group of students you are working with, just like last year, are really lovely and caring. Your young people are so attentive and really listen to the older people.”
