Word on the Street The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form Happy New Year! Word on the Street wishes you all a successful, happy and healthy 2014. We look forward to bringing you news, views and information about the exciting learning activities and events that are part of everyday life here at Bethnal Green Academy.

Thank you for caring! Winterfest, BGA’s first winter festival of Arts, Sports and Culture was a huge success. Students, staff, parents/carers and friends raised a very impressive £4,000.86 for the people of the Philippines who were badly affected by Typhoon Haiyan in November. Throughout December there were a range of fundraising events and activities that included the Staff Shoot Out, Jackanory in the LRC, cycling, the BGA Bake-Off, the Victorian Evening and the Winter Fayre. We were overwhelmed by the fantastic effort that everyone put in to make WinterFest such a fantastic event. We all learned a lot and had fun at the same time all for a good cause. A cheque for £4000.86 will be going to DEC, the Disasters Emergency Committee for the Philippines appeal. For more information visit: http:// www.dec.org.uk/appeals/philippinestyphoon-appeal

Great Big Dance Off Eighteen students from Bethnal Green Academy will be performing at The Great Big Dance Off competition that will be held at the New Wimbledon Theatre on Monday 3rd February. Students will be competing against other secondary schools in London for a trophy and a place in the finals in June. These students have been training extremely hard after school in the run up to the competition. All of the participants are very excited and cannot wait for their performance. This is the first dance competition that Bethnal Green Academy are competing in and it definitely will not be the last.

Art goes to Paris

Last weekend a group of Sixth Form Art students travelled by Eurostar to Paris for a three-night cultural trip courtesy of Allen & Overy.

They all had a fantastic experience and were inspired by the art and architecture of the French Capital. This is what they had to say about their art adventure... "Travelled on a fantastic adventure, learning about the lifestyle of artists and their unique and perfectionist masterpieces" Mazhar Hussain "I really enjoyed my trip Paris. It was really different and amazing. The buildings and art work really inspired me and opened my eyes to the world". Abida Hussein

"Paris was much like the busy streets of london except the architecture was much more traditional, like Victorian architecture. The trip inspired me to look at the world more carefully." Leanne Ingram "It was an amazing experience to go to Paris for the first time. I really enjoyed the modern architecture of the Pompidou centre" Nicole San " Paris really inspired me, especially for my photography project." Theodore Barbey "Going to the Louvre really opened my eyes to new ideas and cultures." Aklima Begam

Kayaking in the Street

A little love for the Philippines Thank you to all who were involved in the making of and the sharing of the heartwarming BGA DVD, Little Love Mix. The wonderful short film featuring our students and their musical message helped to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Here are some comments from members of the public who watched the film...

"The pupils seem so confident and happy. Keep up the good work."

After the success of the kayaking club we decided to widen this opportunity to all students. For the next term we will have kayaking/canoeing machines in the street. We are currently running 'The 30 second challenge' to identify the top kayaker in each year group. Keep your eye out for new challenges and fundraising activities in the future. Current kayaking timetable for the street; Monday: Year 7, Tuesday: Year 8, Wednesday: Year 9, Thursday: Year 10, Friday: Year 11.

Artist in residence

This week, our footballer linguists had an amazing opportunity to practise all of the Portuguese that they have been learning when BGA hosted a visit from 25 Brazilian teachers! The visiting teachers were from the Associação Brasileira de Culturas Inglesas widely known as ‘Cultura Inglesa’ (English Culture), and had come to BGA to focus on how British teachers interact with their students. During period 5, the visitors observed a Y10 Latin lesson and were impressed with the focused and intellectually challenging activities that they saw. They then made their way over to the Sports Hall to see our footballers in action, taking part in their regular training drills with a language twist. From the stalls, the Brazilians saw skillful passes coupled with language drills as our team prepared for the next stage of their highly competitive journey to Germany challenge.

speed speech challenge, conversing with our enthralled visitors in their enthusiastically honed new language. For fifteen minutes, BGA students spoke, questionned and conversed in beautiful Brazilian Portuguese and wowed our visitors with their pronunication, effort and eagerness. The Brazilian teachers left with huge smiles and abundant praise for our group who in turn, left excited to have had an authentic reason to practise the language they have been working so hard to learn outside of school. Thank you to Arthur Fernades Pinheiro, Nathalya Mendonca and to Ms. Gokay, who supported with the visit and who were outstanding ambassadors for BGA.

Once warmed up, our footballers jogged to the stalls where they took part in a

Paul Richard Smith, a local contemporary abstract artist, is currently working with Year 12 and 13 students at BGA to develop their painting skills. He will also inspire our art students as he produces his own work during his four-week residence here at the academy. The body of work produced during this project will be exhibited at the academy later this term.
