Artbeat exhibition launch
On Thursday evening our talented Artbeat group showcased their art work at the opening of the Artbeat exhibition at the offices of Allen and Overy. Students have been working with two professional artists, using different materials and techniques to produce some fantastic work. They should be very proud of their art! We thank Allen and Overy with whom we have been working for the past 10 years to develop and nurture our young artists through the Artbeat project.

Year 8 Painting Workshop Over the last six weeks a group of Year 8 students were chosen to participate in a painting workshop with resident artist Paul Smith. Samiul Basar writes: I was really pleased with myself when I heard that I was picked for the Art project with Mr Smith. I didn’t think that I was that good at art. The first session was quite fun and easy as we went up to the Sixth Form area to see the landscape that we were going to paint. After coming back down, we chose the colours that we were going to use. Then we started to paint the background with our lightest colour. We were painting with real artists canvases and paint which was exciting as it was the first time.
In conclusion I have to say that it felt really good to be chosen for the Art project with a real artist. I think that this is going to develop my drawing skills, painting skills and other art skills a lot. Samiul Basar 8CKi
Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia On Wednesday 29th January, Bethnal Green Academy students took part in a unique workshop on Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, organised in cooperation with the Joseph Interfaith Foundation. The workshop challenged the students to explore, discuss and contrast contemporary expressions of hatred towards Jews and Muslims. The discussions ranged from the Anelka to the EDL and "creeping sharia". The students also had the opportunity to hear Rabbi David Lister (Senior Rabbi from Edgware United Synagogue) who
shared the story of his family's survival of the Holocaust. The students represented themselves and the academy to the highest standards and impressed Mehri Niknam MBE, the director of the Joseph Interfaith Foundation, who remarked on the students’ enthusiasm for learning and participation in the discussion.
