‘Remembrance Week’ was held at the Academy from 10th November-14th November 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The week saw students writing war poetry, performing scenes from Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful and taking part in a poppy hunt to learn more about the war.
We were really impressed with the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of all students who were involved in the week’s activities, particularly the respect demonstrated during the playing of the last post on Tuesday morning. Many thanks to the Y9 students who were involved and staff who supported throughout the week.
Anti-Bullying Week at BGA The theme for Anti Bullying Week this year has been 'Let's stop bullying for all', focusing on celebrating difference and supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities. Students have participated in assemblies delivered by Ms Brannick discussing why we should value differences and understand what makes us all individuals. PC Turner delivered assemblies to all year groups focusing on the criminal aspects of bullying and the legal consequences for bullies. The event that had most impact was an assembly delivered by Year 9 students, Kinneh and Asiautu (please add surnames), encouraging students to stop and reflect on how their own behaviour impacts on others and how words can be used as 'weapons' to hurt and scar people. The response from the student body was impressive and received extremely positive feedback from staff and students alike. Another great example of BGA students acting as role models and leaders within their school community. On Thursday 20th November ICare Revolution gave a presentation to Y7, 8 and 9 on Thursday 20th
November to promote and inspire active change to prevent and stop bullying and cyber bullying. A performance by a dynamic street dance crew was followed by a thought
WinterFest is here! Look out for activities and events in The Street and around the Academy throughout December. This year we aim to raise at least £2170 to reserve 100 places at Crisis at Christmas. Each place will provide three days of food, shelter and support for someone who is homeless this Christmas. Let’s work together to help homeless people in London! The full programme can be found on the BGA website at: www.bethnalgreenacademy.co.uk. Online donations are also welcome at www.justgiving.com/Bethnal-GreenAcademy1.
A visit from Hubei Province in China! On Thursday 19th November a group of 25 teachers visited BGA from the Hubei Province Department of Education in China. The visit was part of a programme organised by SSAT
BGA received so much positive feedback on what the teachers saw in all lessons and how much they learnt from this. They were brimming with ideas and looking forward to going back and putting new ideas into practice. A huge 'Xie Xie' (thank you) to students and staff who made our visitors so welcome.
provoking film showing statistics about bullying. Students participated in the presentation and promised to spread the word that bullying will not be tolerated in our academy.
