Read all about it! World Book Day 2011 This week sees the return of yet another important event in our annual calendar, World Book Day. Coincidentally, it will also mark the opening of our newly refurbished school library, or Learning Resource Centre as it is now known. We are always told that we should “never judge a book by its cover”. Ironically, the same applies here. World Book Day isn’t just about books! It’s about reading and learning, the enjoyment of storytelling, finding things out, facts and fun. That said, one great thing about a book is that it can be shared. You could lend your favourite book to your friend to read, you could borrow a book from the LRC, you could even donate a book to a charity shop. That way someone else can enjoy the book and also donate money to a valuable cause. What’s your favourite book?
Competition: Design a bookmark. One of the many activities and events that form part of World Book Day this year is a competition to design a bookmark. All you have to do is come up with an idea around the theme of ‘books’ or ‘reading’ and draw it in the template (right). We will then send off your entries for you and cross our fingers. We know we have some budding artists at BGTC so there’s a great chance of someone winning the £100 first prize or £50 runner-up prize. As always, post your entries into a Voice Box and don’t forget to write your name and tutor group on the back. Good luck! www.bgtc.org.uk/wordonthestreet
(Mr.) Pedley’s Puzzle Page A weekly brainteaser competition with prizes! Last week’s puzzle was:
I am the mother’s child, the father’s child yet no one’s son. Who am I? Answer: you are their daughter! Simple when you think about it, but I bet it caught some of you out. This week it’s all about trees...
Can you plant 4 trees in a field so that they are all of equal distance from one another? Write your name, tutor group and answer on a piece of paper and post it in a Voice Box or return it to Mr. Pedley. The winners will be announced next week!
Word of the week.

Fairtrade Fortnight Two weeks of trade made fair. Today also sees the start of Fairtrade fortnight and as always BGTC is doing its bit. Most students will have already learned about the importance of fair trade in Humanities lessons and the role of the Fairtrade Foundation in supporting the rights of growers, producers and farmers alike. Over the next two weeks during break and lunch students will be selling Fairtrade products from a market stall in the street. We also have Fairtrade food in the canteen. Why not keep an eye out for the Fairtrade symbol when you’re next in a shop. The more we support it, the better it is for everyone around the world. Look out for posters around school, slideshows on the TVs or visit www.fairtrade.org.uk. More information in next week’s issue. www.bgtc.org.uk/wordonthestreet
