The Bridge - July 2012

Su m m e r Fore s t July in the Forest This is the month to look out for Silver-washed Fritillaries in the forest. Recently several visitors have asked us where they could find these big, orange butterflies. The females fly along open, sunny rides while the males circle them in courtship flights, so the answer is to look along the Elan Valley pipeline, the disused railway line or similar places, and in the right weather too! (God willing). There has been an annual survey of butterflies along the Earnwood section of the pipeline carried out by the Wyre Forest Study Group since 2005. In 2010 there were 1446 sightings of 24 species, including 24 sightings of Silver-washed Fritillaries. The full results can be found in The Wyre Forest Study Group Review 2010. Contact Rosemary Winnall at rosemary@wyreforest.net if you’d like to get hold of these fantastically informative publications. There are also a few places in the forest where you may be rewarded with the sight of a White Admiral butterfly – oddly named as it is dark brown but with a white band across all four wings. This species feeds mainly on honeysuckle, so that’s where to look –

mainly along the Dowles Brook, and even in the shadier areas. Our regular events continue: Thursdays in term time - Forest Friends for pre-school children and their carers. 10am for an hour of forest-based play and activities. £3 per child. No booking required Tuesdays and Sundays 11am to 12noon Join our free Health Walks for a morning of fitness-improving exercise and companionship. Come at 10.30am to register on your first walk. Once the school holidays begin we have FREE “Treetastic Tuesdays” and “Forest Fridays” every Tuesday and Friday, from 24th July until 31st August, when you can come and explore the Community Discovery Centre anytime between 11am and 3pm. Follow several different trails around the centre, including the new Sensory Trail, the Earth’s Story Timeline, Texture Tunnels, etc. You can also enjoy the many different art works both inside and out. The new Wildside of Wyre Museum will also be open on these days. There will be a different children’s activity on each day available too, for a small charge. Linda Iles, Forestry Commission

Editorial News

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month

I’ve mentioned before the perils of writing my editorial three weeks or so before you read it. So feeling fed up with the constant rain I decided to get it to change for July. Having got back to my car after a walk round Mamble yesterday and emptied the water out of my boots, - “I’ll write about rain”, I decided, knowing that it will be totally inapplicable by the time the Bridge comes out. Just so you know, you lot, sitting there in your sunloungers drinking iced lemonade.

In spite of June’s weather, our magazine this month has a celebratory feel to it with pictures of Bewdley’s encounter with the Olympic torch and of the Queen’s Jubilee. Jonathan Sachs, the Chief Rabbi, once said that when his family first came to this country he became convinced that after hearing so many repetitions of the wish that “long may she rain over us” it was no surprise that this country was rarely dry. A friend who lived in Sweden before her marriage said that everyone there thinks Britain is cold, dark and wet because all the exported programmes from British T.V. show nothing else. Certainly rain can pour, drip, thunder and soak. It can be cold, freezing and come in lumps. Sometimes it suspends itself reluctantly as mist, fog or haar. Occasionally it seems to do everything in swift succession. But whatever our British rain gets up to, it must surely have one huge benefit. It gives us something to talk about. So I’ll dry off the boots and look forward to all that July sun I’ll have made happen. Still - don’t forget to have your umbrellas handy, whatever you get up to this month. Margaret

Bewdley Royal Encounters

This photo is taken from archives held by Bewdley Festival. Does anyone know who these young singers are? If you can tell us – even better, if you are one of them – let us know at our usual Bridge addresses and we’ll let the Festival committee know. Margaret

It’s common knowledge in Bewdley that our town has seen royals come and go over the years, but does anybody actually know who and when? Since Bewdley was given its town charter by Edward IV in 1472, we have seen Catherine of Aragon get married to Prince Arthur at his manor house in Bewdley, obviously before she became financially weak and appealed to Henry the Eighth for financial support. This is where the two became close and ended up getting married, before her unfortunate death caused in childbirth. Another somewhat unknown royal connection of ours is that of Mary Herbert. Mary was the countess of Pembroke, and she was born at the well-known Tickenhill Manor on Park Lane! She was in fact the most educated woman in England during the 1500s, and could only be compared to the likes of Queen Elizabeth. Mary nursed Queen Elizabeth though smallpox and consequent disfigurement; a common illness at the time. Mary often returned to Bewdley on a regular basis, as she was said to have loved “the way the air smells at dawn”. It’s a shame people in Bewdley don’t pay more attention to our Royal connections, as the reality seems to be that more people are interested in watching Tony Blair looking concerned standing on Bewdley Bridge during the floods for a TV interview back in 2008! Perhaps now with the Jubilee just gone by, and the 2012 Olympics coming up, our royals will be saluted once more? Chris Salter

Would George Fox hum along?

Quaker Meeting Houses are renowned for their peace and quiet, but this October Bewdley Quaker Meeting House will be full of lively song and music. Boisterous, cheerful ‘West Gallery’ eighteenth century English church music, sung and played by the twelve plus members of Malvern group - Vital Spark. It’s the type of music local people got from influences both in their local churches but more importantly outside the church with folk songs and at country dances. Vital Spark keeps to the same original arrangements but with the influences of the modern age. Singing and playing along with various instruments, they play at churches and other venues with great energy and feeling. They also sing pieces from the allied American tradition known as ‘Sacred Harp’ or ‘Shape Note’ singing. If you fancy hearing this authentic type of music and also helping a good cause, come along to Bewdley Friends Meeting House in Lower Park at 8pm on Friday October 5th. Tickets are £5-50 which includes light refreshments in the interval. Monies raised will go to the Tabora League for Children in Tanzania, a charity which works with orphans and vulnerable children. Phone 01562 755844 from late August for tickets. (And I think he would smile and hum but, of course, silently!)

Go Wild in Wyre? During the Summer Holidays, deep in the wilds of the Wyre Forest, a group of children meet to spend time exploring and playing in their own secret location! For the past seven years numerous children, led by Forestry Commission Education staff, have had great fun getting muddy and dirty playing in streams and ditches, building natural shelters, making bows and arrows and learning how to light a fire! There is a growing body of research that highlights the benefits to children of spending more time outdoors, and especially playing in the woods. So if you would like to have the opportunity this Summer to make popcorn over a camp fire, play games such as ‘Camouflage Capture’ and get messy making your own mud monster then book onto the Forestry Commission’s ‘Wild in Wyre’ three day holiday activity for 8-11 year olds. The programme is running from Monday 30th July until Wednesday 1st August 2012 (9am to 3pm) and costs £60 for the 3 days. Summer Holiday

Community News

CHRISTIAN AID

The result of the Christian Aid campaign week in May was a total of £1,945.84 which has been forwarded to headquarters.

Thank you to everyone who contributed – especially the many who gift-aided their gift – and my warm appreciation to all those who did the house-to-house work – thank you. Susan Price The time is almost here when those with offspring ‘look forward’ to several weeks of enforced companionship, or else are as I write frantically phoning round relatives and friends and booking holiday activity sessions so that their children are safe and occupied whilst they have to work.

A totally free activity for them to do (with parents and/or carers) is to come to the library and sign up for our Summer Reading Challenge.

For those new to this, children aged 5 to 11 sign up to read six books over the summer holidays and along the way collect free gifts and stickers as incentives to finish the programme.

This year’s theme is ‘Story Lab’ and when children register they can draw their own monster in a test tube to use to mark their progress on our wall chart. Incentives are given out for every two books returned. Any sort of book can be read, including picture books for younger ones and non-fiction books for those who prefer them. Sharing books with adults counts for emergent readers.

There’s a certificate and a ceremony to attend in the Autumn for everyone who completes. Why not give it a go? There might even be a few rare moments of peace. Kay Sanderson

You may have noticed that we have been doing some decorating at the medical centre recently. This is to freshen things up and improve the appearance of the waiting room. We are shortly having some artwork from local schools which we are very excited about. We hope you will enjoy the new look. Drs Kneebone and Elliott have now relocated to our new clinical room 13 which will mean they don’t have to keep moving rooms. This can make the reception area feel very busy at times; however unfortunately we needed the space for clinical activity. Hopefully we will have some progress with our new building in the near future. We have also come up with a new practice logo and updated our website www.bewdleymedicalcentre.com You can book appointments, request repeat prescriptions, email your doctor. We also have details about our staff, our services, lots of high quality resources on managing minor illnesses and the most up to date news about our new building. Please visit it. It will be updated regularly. Another new and exciting change is our phone system. The results of our patient survey showed that our phone lines can be a source of frustration to you. Our new phone system goes live soon. This will guide you to the most appropriate member of our team. Sarah Tamplin, Bewdley Medical Centre

Community Bed Filling Day

Community News

A hot and sweaty day was held at Wribbenhall Millennium Green thanks to a donation from Western Power Distribution.

Following a community consultation in February, funding has been sourced to pay for some of the ideas the community came up with. Western Power Distribution gave a donation which covered the cost of all the raised beds, plus the quality top soil to go in them.

On Sunday 27th May, a day of blazing sunshine, work started at10am with a small party putting the beds together on site and at 11am around forty volunteers came to help fill the beds with soil. The tools and technical skill were supplied by Chris Leck of Transition Bewdley Land Group. The youngest ‘bed filler’ was nineteen-month-old Dylan Thomas Gibson who helped to fill the beds and plant some flowers, although he did tip some soil out too! Each of the raised beds is going to be ‘adopted’ by someone living locally and will be looked after for twelve months for the pleasure and benefit of everyone in the community.

Wyre Forest Swimming Club is proud to send club members Amy Smith and Claire Cash - more best wishes for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Amy will be swimming for Great Britain in the 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle events and relays. Claire is representing Great Britain at the Paralympics where she will be competing in the S2 category. Both Amy and Claire started their swimming careers with Wyre Forest Swimming club in the Learn to Swim sessions. Both have worked tremendously hard over the years to achieve qualification for the London Olympics, and to be ranked among the best in the world in their respective events, and they thoroughly deserve their chance to compete with the best. Among the current squads of swimmers at Wyre Forest there are many hopefuls from Bewdley looking to emulate their club mates’ success. Of these Megan Tinsdale, who is 15 and attends The Bewdley School, is swimming at the National Youth championships for the first time this year and is following in Amy’s path as the top sprinter in Worcestershire. Please join Megan and her WFSC team mates in following the progress of Amy and Claire in the London Aquatic Centre from 28th July, and keep up to date with the club at www.wfsc.org.uk or phone 01299 825769 for details of the Learn to Swim scheme and how you can join the club. Food Bank Comes to Kidderminster

Community News

On May 15th 2012 a food bank opened in Kidderminster at Baxter Church. It is part of the Trussell Trust initiative to provide food through a voucher system to individuals and families who are desperately in need. Aid is usually given to those who have had their benefits withdrawn suddenly or have no money available to buy necessities and would otherwise go without. The food bank gives them three days emergency food supplies while a longer-term solution is developed. You might think a food bank is unnecessary in this day and age, but people without food is a growing problem. In 2010 the Trussell Trust fed 60,000 people nationally, but this rose in 2011 to 120, 000. Before the food bank was set up at Baxter Church, Franche Community Church was already distributing food supplies to needy families and other local churches have their own initiatives. I know myself of cases where food is desperately needed and where people have burst into tears on being given a few days temporary supply. Bewdley Quakers recognize this need and are collecting food for the Baxter Church initiative. We would encourage other Bewdley churches to do the same. The food bank will collect from donors on a regular basis. To become involved in this project or to volunteer, please contact the co-ordinator Maureen Lewis on 01562 822771. John Maynard

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL

Recently the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral has been

celebrated with a service attended by the Princess Royal. Even earlier than the consecration there was a service there for all the people who were connected in any way with the actual construction of the Cathedral. I was privileged to go to this service with my husband, in May 1962. He, as a Civil Engineer and a boxed piling specialist, was responsible, with others in his company, for the foundations. It was a memorable service and I was particularly impressed with the beautiful John Piper Baptistry window. The book “Phoenix at Coventry” by the Cathedral’s Architect, Sir Basil Spence, details the history of the new building.

Helping in the Forest

Keen volunteer, retired carpenter ‘Mac’ Wassel has been hard at work in the workshop at the Wyre Community Land Trust based at Uncllys Farm. Mac has been constructing frames from Wyre Forest oak for the new Butterfly Trail being installed by Natural England almost entirely on the National Nature Reserve. Mac designed the frames in consultation with Natural England’s Reserve Manager, Saul Herbert. Once the design had been agreed the oak was milled at Uncllys farm by Ian Carmichael, a local mobile saw mill contractor. Mac is one of a small army of volunteers that support the Wyre Community Land Trust and other organisations who are working to improve the wonderful landscape and wildlife in the Wyre Forest. Volunteers help with a diverse range of projects from woodland management to rounding up cattle. The Land Trust is currently looking to recruit volunteers to help with checking cattle over the summer conservation grazing period. Volunteers will receive full training and would be asked to commit to checking the animals on specific days that fit in with their own routines. Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Hi Everyone,

The town has been a hive of activity last month due, as my humans informed me, to something called the Diamond Jubilee. Apparently this means that the Queen, who is a very important human, has reigned

for 60 years. I got very excited and watched some of the celebrations on television. I particularly enjoyed the procession of boats on the Thames, it reminded me of the pub and club regatta here in Bewdley, although there didn’t seem to be as many swans and geese. The only thing I wasn’t too sure about was that the Queen likes dogs called corgis. Although, I am feeling much better about dogs since we welcomed our new vet Elena to the practice. She has brought her Yorkshire Terriers with her, Chica and Nina, who are my two new best friends. My humans were busy last month preparing our float for the Carnival Procession. I hope you all enjoyed our float and it was lovely to see so many of you in Bewdley on the day. More from me again soon, Gavin

Dear Editor, I had a wonderful thing happen upon the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on bank holiday Monday. I was in the Jubilee Gardens Bewdley with our R.B.L. stand when one lady just shouted out loud to me. “Thank oh thank you! I have now founded my grandad’s war grave in France! Thank you”. He had been killed in 1916. But he was a Bewdley hero 96 years ago . He was 26 years old and very strong in every way. He would say , “Come on lads! Out of this trench and show them Germans what we are made of! What a sad loss. Neville Bould

Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles. These include: training as advisers, campaigning on social policy issues, working as bureaux receptionists, helping out with marketing, campaigning, finance, IT, administration, media relations, publicity, or even sitting on the trustee board. Opportunities are flexible – some volunteers choose to help out for a short period, while others have supported Citizens Advice for many years. We will be closing the Hall as this gives us a shorter time for the work also we feel it will be safer. In order to create a really super facility for the people of Wribbenhall, Bewdley and anyone else who needs it we have now started applying for other grants. Local fund raising continues and we look forward to your support. Please remember every penny counts so no contribution is too small

You will have read of the splendid effort and support we had from the Wribbenhalll Brownies. If there is anyone out there who wants to help in any way, or would like more information please contact us; Liz Davies 01299 403053 Anne Mace 01299 402204 Date for your diary: The AGM will take place on Tuesday 4th September. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH JUNE 2012

St Annes Church Clock Residents may have noticed that the church clock has been unusually quiet of late and that is because a fault has developed with its striking mechanism and a new motor may be required unless the old one can be rewound. However as quite a considerable cost is involved of nearly £1500, Councillors decided not to go ahead immediately with a replacement. Millennium Green Councillors had a full report from Sarah Lange who is leading the residents’ group in setting up raised beds to encourage local people to get involved in growing their own flowers and shrubs. These beds then take on the appearance of a community garden. There are further plans to enhance the amenities with the possibility of fruit trees and a sensory plant trail. Jubilee Events The Town Council were able to review the various events that they had helped to organise mainly in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens during the Jubilee week-end and also the firework display that the Rowing Club had kindly agreed to host. Jubilee Mugs The Mayor, Cllr John Latham, whose first regular meeting this was, took the opportunity to report back on the distribution of Jubilee mugs to local primary school children which had taken place just before the week-end celebrations. These were given away free of charge and hopefully will be a memento of a historic occasion. Medical Centre The Town Clerk was able to confirm that he had set up a public meeting for Tuesday 26th June at 7.30pm at Bewdley School to discuss the continued disquiet felt amongst residents at the possible move of the medical centre away from its present location off Load Street. Welch Gate We heard that the County Council may be close to reporting their findings as to how best to tackle the problem of poor air quality in Welch Gate caused by the traffic. This problem has been talked about for many years but there remains much doubt as to whether there is any magic solution without causing knock–on traffic difficulties elsewhere. Future Town Council meetings

Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 2nd July, 6th August, 3rd September, 1st October and 5th November.

Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Future Energy for Bewdley - can we survive Peak Oil

Transition Bewdley are hosting a meeting, "Energy Futures for Bewdley" on 5th July at 7.30 p.m. at Bewdley Baptist Church. We will discover how much energy we in Bewdley currently use for heating, lighting, cooking and for our transport, what potential there is for reducing our energy use and whether we could ever become self-sufficient for our energy needs. John Halle of The Share Energy Cooperative will talk about the Neen Sollars Hydropower scheme and discuss what possibilities there might be for Bewdley to generate its own energy. We will also hear about funding initiatives such as feed in tarrifs and the renewable heat incentive and discover whether it still makes good financial sense to install solar panels on our houses. The meeting will also launch a new series of energy leaflets for Bewdley. Do come along.

Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival

The annual Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival took place on Sunday 31st July 2011 at Holbeache Farm, Trimpley, Nr Kidderminster, Worcestershire. This is the home of the Holbeache Stud where Mike Clarke and his daughter Alison bred the very Suffolk Punch Heavy Horse. Mike and his family organize a whole array of activities from Art Exhibitions to Horse and Cart rides, Tractor & trailer rides, donkey rides, fair, dog show, car boot sale, trade stands selling a variety of merchandise and refreshments. Many of Mike’s Suffolks will be housed in the stables where the public can view them easily and you will usually find Mike talking to anyone who will listen up in the stables, this is where he is in his element, educating and chatting to the public, he is such a natural. The foals will be found in the stables too and these are always such a great crowd puller. In the working field you will find many of the Horses working, ploughing and muck spreading and there is always a threshing machine working too; it is great to see how these beautiful creatures used to work the land. All the proceeds from the show are donated to several local charities but the main donation goes to the Suffolk Horse Society. This year’s show is on Sunday 29th July 2012. For general enquiries please call Mike on 07831 674018 or for trade stand enquiries please contact Mike’s daughter, Tracy, on 07531524280.
