The Bridge February 2020

February in the Forest Spring has come! Well, let’s say that by midJanuary there were plenty of signs that our wildlife was behaving as if the time had come to burst its buds, flower, mate or whatever seemed appropriate for spring. There were snowdrops and primroses in my garden, hazel catkins opening along the hedgerow and birds calling excitedly everywhere. For several weeks now Tawny Owls have been hooting loudly nearby. The hoot is the true song of the bird but the female often answers with the sharp, ascending ‘whit-whit’ contact call. (The British Trust for Ornithology’s website has a ‘Learn about Owls’ page which, helpfully, has recordings of all the British owls.) Tawny Owls will already be nesting and may have eggs by the end of the month. Their natural nest site is a hollow tree but they will readily use a nest box with a large entrance hole (150mm or wider), at least 2.5 m high and with a clear flight path. A piece of dowel or branch attached to the side of the box makes a helpful perch for adults and fledgling young. Once the eggs are laid they are incubated one at a time, with food supply determining how many are hatched. One of my sources mentions grey squirrels as one of their foods but I feel this is wishful thinking: voles, shrews, worms and small birds are more likely to form the bulk of their diet. Mandarin ducks, which don’t even feature in our older books on British birds, have established themselves firmly on the River Severn, Dowles Brook, Trimpley Reservoir and smaller pools in the forest. Like Tawny Owls they nest in tree holes but not so early in the year. Some years ago a pair chose to nest in an old, hollow apple tree at Uncllys but the eggs were abandoned. The nest was so deep that I would imagine the ducklings would have found it extremely difficult to exit safely. At this time of the year a pair of Mandarins make their presence felt by circling over the farm at dusk on their way to the reservoir, flying rapidly and making shrill, squeaking calls. The aforementioned BTO website will also tell you how you can take part in their Nest Box Challenge.Volunteers are asked to monitor the birds in their garden through the breeding season and the data gathered will give important information on the status of our native birds and the success of our efforts to help them. So get those nest boxes cleaned out now to be ready for the real spring! Linda Iles

St. George’s Hall Did you know? Most readers will know of the presence of St George’s Hall in Bewdley (in case you don’t, it’s the large building on the left as you pass through Load St. car park). Since it reopened after a major refurbishment in 2013, it has grown to become a centre for a wide range of activities in the town. These range from its volunteer-run café (open Monday to Saturday 10.00 to 17.00), to its weekly cinema (Thursday evenings at 7.30) and monthly live music on Friday evenings but also encompass a huge range of events and activities run by hirers of rooms in the Hall. But did you know just how busy it is? Here are a few facts and figures from last year: • Over 50 separate voluntary and charitable organisations used the Hall during the year alongside 30 individuals and businesses. • Over 100 volunteers help run the café and cinema. • 824 bookings of the Hall (that’s nearly 16 bookings per week) • Attendances at events run in the Hall topped 32,000 (and that doesn’t include visits to the café!) If you want to know more about what goes on, look inside the back page of The Bridge each month or go to https://www.thehall-bewdley.org.uk/.

Bewdley Library Last month I said we’d know the fate of the library by now but unfortunately that hasn’t turned out to be the case, so I won’t make any more predictions as to when we will eventually know what's happening. Apologies to those Bridge readers who traipsed in to the library to find out. In the meantime everything is fairly regular here; footfall and issues are remaining steady with a large number of new books coming in after a lengthy hold up when we implemented the new system. February will include an alternative St Valentine’s display – ‘Love Gone Wrong’ but for traditionalists we’ll also be stocking a Regency Romance display with authors such as Mary Balogh, Elouisa James, Lisa Kleypas and Julia Quinn. Throughout the year we will be participating in the BBC's 'Stories have the power to change us' - 100 novels that have shaped the world. A panel of leading writers & critics have chosen 100 novels that have had an impact on their lives. These English language novels, written over the last 300 years, range from children’s classics to popular page turners. Organised into themes, they reflect the ways books help shape and influence our thinking. February's theme is 'Love, Sex and Romance'. For those of a less excitable persuasion don't fret, we'll also be having a display on Populism & its recent rise. Finally, for those who have had difficulty in obtaining a copy of The Bridge we will be stocking more copies so do pop in if you're in the area. Jonathan Halsall

The Bridge Febr b uary 2 2020

Delivering The Bridge Over a hundred of you will know all about the joys, perils, unexpected encounters and other experiences of delivering this magazine to both sides of the bridge. The Wribbenhall side collect from All Saints' and have a loyal army of deliverers. A few years ago two of our readers undertook the big task of trying to rationalise the job on the St Anne’s side so that there were deliveries to every street. Our aim has always been to get as many people as possible to deliver just a few magazines close to where they live but, despite our best efforts, we realise some areas are uncovered.

If an area is missed for any reason, copies of the magazine should be available at these town centre places: Tesco, Wyre Forest Books (apologies for getting your name wrong last month), St.George’s Hall, Co-op, Healthpoint Pharmacy, Bewdley Medical Centre, Bewdley Farm Shop and the library. This isn't meant to replace the regular delivery but will act as an additional source of the magazine. And of course, if you would like to join in the fun, why not volunteer to grab some copies each month from St Anne's and join our delivery angels? Just email Janet on janet@mannfamily.co.uk and she'll be glad to sort it out. 17

Bewdley Town F.C. With the festive season long gone, and midwinter in full swing, Bewdley Town FC continue to ride high in the West Midlands Premier League with hopes of promotion still a distinct possibility. As this editorial was being compiled, the team had just completed two fantastic “back to back” wins, with victory over local rival Bridgnorth by 5 goals to 2, followed up three days later on a magnificent evening at “The Meadow” which saw Town see off league leaders Shifnal Town 2-0 in a highly entertaining, if at times feisty, encounter. The away fixture at Shifnal is scheduled for Saturday 22nd February KO 3.00pm and it is hoped a decent following of Bewdley fans can make the short journey across into Shropshire for what is sure to another great game of football. Post code for Shifnal’s Acoustafoam Stadium is TF11 8PD. What has also been both pleasing and noticeable is an influx of people from within the local Bewdley community starting to follow the team on a regular basis and using the visit to the football as a basis for a very social Saturday afternoon (or Tuesday evening). In turn they are generating a better match day atmosphere within the ground and the club are working from their side on things such as proper match day presentation to enhance the experience of watching live football in this affordable and enjoyable manner. We are very conscious that we have to continue working to engage with the Bewdley and greater Wyre Forest community on all levels, and with this is mind a new email address has been created. This is for people to ask general questions, come up with ideas on how the club can deliver (wherever possible) what you think a football club in a community should offer, how we might improve the match day experience, and any other proposals relating to Bewdley Town FC. We invite correspondence via askbewdleytownfc@gmail.com. Suggestions and questions will receive prompt attention.

Social Prescribing: Just What the Doctor Ordered Social Prescribing is part of the NHS’s long-term commitment to make personalised care - choice and control over ‘what matters’ to you - an important and integral part of everyone’s healthcare. Bewdley Medical Centre is one of the first surgeries to benefit from a Social Prescriber Link Worker. So what is Social Prescribing? Life’s problems can make you feel unwell and overwhelmed. Social Prescribers support a person towards living a positive and fulfilled life. They put you in touch with people, services, resources and activities in your community and help you find ways to overcome other practical issues that can impact on your health and wellbeing. Issues such as debt, housing and benefit problems are some of the many things that a Social Prescriber can help with. There is emerging evidence that Social Prescribing can lead to a range of positive health and wellbeing outcomes, such as improved quality of life and emotional wellbeing. If you feel that you would benefit from this service and are aged over 16, you can speak to your GP or Nurse about this when you are next in to see them, or you can self-refer by calling in to the surgery, either in person or by telephone.

St. Anne’s Chess Club The final of the St Anne`s Christmas Chess Knock-out was held at St Anne`s Church on Wednesday 18th December. It needed two games to decide who would be this year`s winner, and after a hard fought game, it was Diane McGee who took the shield with Vernon Owen runner up. Diane has made history as the first lady to win a Chess Championship in Bewdley. She was presented with the St Anne`s Knock-out Shield by the Mayor of Bewdley Councillor John Byng. The Club has been going now for over five years and is held on Wednesday`s between 12noon till 2.00pm. It has become very popular in the town. The Club was instrumental in establishing the equally popular Bewdley Town Chess Tournament which raises money for charities and is held once a year. An aim of the Club is to get Bewdley known as a chess friendly town. Keith Thompson

Transition Bewdley Repair Café When is a repair not a repair? We are sometimes puzzled when an apparently satisfied customer notes on their feedback form that an item was not repaired when we know that it was. Our definition of a repair is when an item now works better or more safely than before. Phil Harris gives an example: We didn’t get many Christmas tree lights for repair this winter, probably because the general trend away from replaceable but unreliable incandescent bulbs towards LEDs has made these lights much more reliable, not to mention far more energy-efficient. At home, we have a set of 40 very pretty red festive LED lights which has worked perfectly for over a decade, until this week when I noticed that the first ten lights had gone out. The label on the low-voltage transformer warned that “...if lamps fail they cannot be replaced... the entire set must be disposed of...”, which did nothing more than set me a challenge! I sketched out the likely wiring diagram, and deduced that I should be able to cut out and remove the faulty string of ten LEDs, leaving thirty good working ones which would still operate safely within their ratings and be sufficient to give a nice festive display. With the power unplugged (of course!) I identified the correct wires, cut out the faulty lights, re-joined the wires by soldering, insulated them with good-quality heat-shrink sleeving, and hey presto! The remaining thirty lamps are now glowing brightly again, hopefully good for a few more years. The job took less than half an hour from idea to finished repair, and this is typical of many of the repair jobs I and my fellow volunteer repairers see at Bewdley Repair Cafe every month. Even though the manufacturer claims it’s “non-repairable”, with the right tools, knowledge and ingenuity at our disposal we can often get things working again! [Phil Harris is a retired Chartered Engineer and has been a volunteer at Bewdley Repair Café since its inception. Phil repairs a variety of electrical and electronic items and clocks.] This would be classed as a modification and modifications to electrical equipment are normally discouraged, but in this instance only the extra-low voltage circuit isolated from the mains was involved, the nature of the modification did not introduce any additional hazard, and the whole equipment was PAT tested afterwards to confirm its electrical safety.” The next Repair Café is on 15th February 10.00am - 2.00pm in St. George’s Hall Other Transition Bewdley News: Transition Bewdley VHS tape collection - As part of Plastic Free Bewdley we will be collecting VHS Video tapes again throughout February. Tapes can be placed in the box at the café at St George’s Hall. No audio cassettes or DVDs please. Bewdley Greener Living Fair - Preparations have now begun for the 2020 event which takes place on Saturday 9th May. 45
