The Bridge - November 2019

The Bridge November 2019

November in the Forest On a woodland walk recently we followed an avenue through Shelf Held Coppice towards Ruskinland. (As far as I know the origins of the name of ‘Shelf Held Coppice’ are lost, but if you know anything about that or other colourful names for parts of the Wyre Forest, please let me know!) Cedric Quayle has told me that the avenue was well-established by the time his Uncle moved to Uncllys in 1914, and was probably planted by George Baker of Beaucastle to link up to a halt on the Tenbury and Bewdley Railway (now disused, with no sign of the halt), so it is now about 140 years old. Where it survives, the avenue is made up of conifers but here and there it contains False Acacia trees (Robinia pseudoacacia) some of which can also be seen along the track continuing from the cattle grid on Tanners Hill. Cedric remembers that the trees were planted to supply wood for making rungs for the tall ladders used to pick cherries in the local orchards. I decided to find out a little more about this unusual forest introduction and was soon up to my ears in fascinating facts! The tree’s other name is Black Locust. ‘Aha!’ I hear some of you say, as locust crops up in American literature and, to quote Wikipedia, ‘As a young man, Abraham Lincoln spent much of his time splitting rails and fence posts from black locust logs’. The specimen at Kew is one of the oldest in the gardens, perhaps dating from their original establishment in 1759, but it did not become widespread in this country until the 1820s thanks to the commercial efforts of William Cobbett, who owned locust nurseries in its native eastern USA. He was convinced of the wonderful properties of its wood, which is hard, straight-grained and very resistant to rot. Cobbett overestimated the strength of the timber in larger scale sections, where oak is far superior, but it is true that it is the closest to a tropical timber which can be grown here in the UK. Over a million were sold, bringing Cobbett a considerable income and leaving specimens in parks and gardens all over the country. The Wyre Forest trees will never be cut to make ladders but their easily-recognisable, deeply-ridged trunks hold up a light canopy of attractive composite leaves and in June lovely, hanging clusters of white flowers decorate and perfume the woods. The bark, leaves and wood of the tree are poisonous but in some parts of the world the flowers are eaten and other parts are used in traditional medicines. It makes good firewood and grows back quickly after being coppiced. I should mention, though, that it can spread by means of suckers and become an invasive nuisance. Coming back to the present season, the rut of the Fallow Deer will soon be over and the forest will take on its winter quietness. This is a month to enjoy the last of the autumn leaves and colourful fungi. Linda Iles

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

I have been on the receiving end of two random kindnesses these last weeks. I was so touched by both appearances of Unexpected Angels that I've decided we need to open a new page in the Bridge to give fellow townspeople a chance to tell everyone about their Angels too. I know a Radio 4 programme that does something similar, so let's have our own Thank You page. I'll start it off on page 15 with my Angels and a wartime Angel I heard about. It also got me thinking about what an untrusting lot we can be sometimes. Not always without cause - those annoying phone calls purporting to notify us we have been hacked and our bank accounts ried, those cold callers persuading us our drive/roof/windows are only moments away from disintegration, and all the articles that we read assuring us that the secret to living to a hundred is blueberries, magnesium, press-ups or surgery. So now we're afraid to tell anyone or believe anything, are frightened to go anywhere on our own and look suspiciously at perfectly nice people who offer help. There's a ďŹ ne line to draw between being careless, feckless, thoughtless and mindless, and being thoughtful, mindful and careful. (Not sure how you can be feckful.) I know I've mentioned before how many people advise me not to go walking on my own in the countryside. And I know I've written about the delightful and interesting conversations with strangers I've had doing just that. Of course, we live in a small town in beautiful countryside. My friend lives in a Birmingham suburb and her thoughtful, careful etc precautions are considerably more robust than mine. Nonetheless, the more we are afraid of the Great Outside and the General Public, the more dangerous it becomes to venture out and meet real live humans. So I'm going walking tomorrow - on my own - to clear my head, lungs and soul. So there. Margaret

Library As I write this I am unsure what displays will be running or will have finished by the time the magazine is printed. Currently we have a small pop up display on Kazakhstan, initiated in response to a publisher's donation of two beautiful books on Kazakh poetry & Kazakh prose. How long the display lasts depends not always on popularity but on the constraints of working in a small library. Often a display will have to be dismantled in favour of a nationally themed one that we are encouraged to participate in such as National Poetry Day or Mental Health Awareness Day. We are currently collating a chocolate display which is largely for kids, there being a copious amount of chocolate themed junior fiction. In conjunction with this, we'll be giving away free chocolate (paid for out of my co-workers pocket in case you're worried about wasting scarce council resources). Also, up at the moment is our 'Stranger Danger' display. This is largely comprised of psychological thrillers with associated books on a 'stranger' theme thrown in for good measure. The modern psychological thriller is largely skewed towards a female audience and was debatably made popular by 'The Girl on the Train'. Often fiction follows fashion in its popularity, with a best seller spawning a host of imitators often better than the original. Prior to the psychological thriller phenomenon, there have been long lasting publishing fashions such as the conspiracy theory thriller. These usually referenced archaeology/history and were initiated by Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Also Nordic Noir was made popular by Stieg Larsson's 'Millennium' trilogy. Non Fiction also has its fashions though usually smaller and shorter lasting. Dave Pelzer's brutal autobiography invented a whole new genre 'Misery Literature', now thankfully on the wane. Currently, there seems to be a boom in medical true stories sparked off by the success of 'When Breath becomes Air', the true life tales of a brain surgeon. Whatever the current fashions, we will do our best to reflect those at Bewdley Library, very restricted finances permitting. In fact if there's a boom in demand for all things Kazakh, you'll know who initiated the fashion!

Bailed Out by Kindness One morning last month I woke up to torrential rain, but no matter; the forecast said it would soon clear up, so I got in the car and drove to some of my favourite little lanes. The rain took its time and I found I was walking down the middle of the lanes between two rushing streams. When I got to the little bridge over a small stream at the bottom, I found it wasn't a small stream any longer and the road was impassable. I glumly realised that, with my car only half a mile away, the only viable alternative to retracing the three miles I'd already walked was to strip off and carry my clothes over my head across the foaming torrent. Just then a car passed me, rounded the bend, and with an almost audible gasp, stopped. I went up to it. "The water is about that deep", I said, pointing to a spot about a foot from the base of my walking pole. "It's not worth the risk", agreed the driver. I asked them where they were going. Warrington, they said. It seemed a somewhat eccentric route. Perhaps they didn't like motorways. But no; it turned out they were coming to the end of their holiday nearby and were going to have a drive around before heading home. I told them, somewhat duplicitously that I was having to turn round and go all the way back. They offered me a lift. Of course they did. And I looked at the baby-seat, luggage, groceries and jumble in the back and said yes. It turned out that the driver was a baptist minister in Warrington who was just finishing a six-week sabbatical looking at youth work. We had a lovely conversation as I directed them back to the main road and got back to my car. Wasn't that nice? Margaret

An Unexpected Kindness In 1943 my father met a man while walking through Kidderminster. He looked lost; my father found out he was an American serviceman stationed at the military hospital in Wolverley. My father showed him round the town and took him home for a meal. After that, he joined the family every weekend and became great friends. My parents wrote regularly to his parents his own letters were heavily censored so they were very glad to get news of their son. He returned home at the end of the war but kept in touch, sending food parcels all through the hungry years after the war. He returned to Bewdley for my christening at St Anne's, in order to be my godfather. We lost touch after a while but in 1972 he wrote us a letter to say he was coming to England, and wanted to come to see my parents in Bewdley. After my father died, I and my family continued to keep in touch. We visited his house in America several times; during the last visit he gave us a box with all the original letters my parents had written to him. They made for a highly emotional read, that narrative of a long friendship that started with my father's unexpected act of kindness. Pat Lewis (Only last month we received news that sadly, our American friend had died, aged 99.) 17

The Community Workshop and Café The Community Workshop and Café are celebrating their first year of opening for all things arty and crafty in the old scout hut at the end of Park Alley, off the High Street in Bewdley, and would like to thank everyone concerned, from visitors, fellow crafts people, fund raisers, and 'pupils' young and old, for their interest, creative enthusiasm and hard work. We are a not for profit company, with very few funds available for publicity and advertising, so it is even more gratifying to have had such a successful year by relying mostly on word of mouth recommendations. Look out for our stalls at the Bewdley Christmas Markets on 8th December where we hope to be selling our craftwork. We also have our own Christmas Fair on Saturday 30th November. Our visitors this year have produced, and taken away, some truly beautiful work. We are, of course, often only left with just a photograph to show the result of their efforts, a shame for us as teachers perhaps, but no less satisfying and rewarding. Our workshops in Stained Glass, Jewellery and willow have proved popular and our 'new' workshops in Blacksmithing, Bodhran Drum making and wet and needle felting equally so. Jason Pond acquired a magnificent pair of antique leather bellows, which, together with his forge and anvil, has brought a new sound to our little corner of the woods, together with the inevitable laughter of his youngsters attempting to beat red hot metal into shape! A happy outcome of his forge work has meant that we can make our own charcoal sticks, which our (retired!) art teacher Trevor Bowen puts to good use in his Painting and Drawing Workshops. Our Head Gardener and all things woolly, Linda Gallagher, with her new spinning wheel and weaving loom, has nurtured an ever growing and popular Knit and Natter Group, held on Tuesday afternoons 1.30 - 4.00. Tammie Pond's contribution has not only been her excellent home made soups, often made with organic produce grown in our garden, and other delicious food, but also hand printed cards, all available in our little Café Shop. We often hear from visitors, "We didn't know you were here.",so do come and see us, have a cup of tea. You never know where it might lead you! The Community Workshop and Café, Old Scout Hut, Bewdley

This photograph, taken for the Inauguration of Bewdley Girl Guides in May 1924, hangs on the wall of Bewdley Girl Guide HQ. It was taken in Gardner’s Meadow and shows the rear of Lower Park in the background. It includes Guides from Worcestershire. The following transcript was taken from an historical record book. The Girl Guides On the 14 of December 1923 at the request of Miss A. Judson, Division Commissioner, a meeting was held with the Mayoress (Mrs. J.H. Cooper) in the chair, in the Town Hall, Bewdley, to decide whether or not a Local Association for Bewdley and a company of Girl Guides should be raised or not. The meeting was attended by a number of representative ladies of the District interested in the movement as well as girls anxious to join. Miss Judson addressed the meeting explaining the aims and object of the Girl Guide movement and the progress made all over England. Mrs. Newcombe of Wolverley, District Commissioner for Worcestershire, brought over a company of Guides who gave a display. The general feeling of the meeting being in favour it was decided to go on with the movement. On being asked to do so Mrs. M.G. Ransom of Stanhope House, Bewdley consented to act as Hon. Secretary and a Local Association was formed consisting of the following: (Nineteen ladies’ names mentioned). The following consented to act on the Executive Committee: (Eight further ladies’ names listed.) On names being asked for of three girls wishing to join the girls being present gave their names as follows:- Kathleen Hall, Margaret Hall. The Mayoress kindly provided tea for all present. The meeting terminated with votes of thanks to Mrs. Cooper, Miss Judson and Mrs. Newcomb. H.M. Cooper In subsequent years a number of units were formed in the Bewdley District which included Far Forest, Rock and Wribbenhall During the 70’s and 80’s there were four Guide Companies, five Brownie Packs and a Ranger Unit in the District (accommodating potentially 300 girls). Today we have 1st Wribbenhall Guides, 1st Wribbenhall Brownies and 1st Bewdley Rainbows. The Guides meet at the Old Grammar School in High Street, Bewdley and always welcome new members. It is not necessary to have been a Rainbow or Brownie to join, but girls must have attained the age of 10-14. Contact: Brenda Goode on 01299 402676 or register your interest through the Girlguiding website. 23

Knitted veg Last month we featured the superb fruit and vegetables produced by the horticultural society at their annual show. Meanwhile, a less edible display of produce can be found at the Methodist Church in High Street. A few years ago, someone at the Knit and Natter group suggested knitting something different. Patterns were produced and now there is a whole range of vegetables, made entirely from knitting wool, take their place at harvest celebrations each year, with regular additions to the collection. The cauliflower and the peapods complete with peas, are particularly ingenious!

News from St Anne's School 'Best Dressed Bottle’ Wyre Forest District Council recently held their ‘Greener Living Fayre’. This event aimed to promote all things eco-friendly and consider ways for a greener, brighter future. A particular focus this year was on the importance of reducing our plastic consumption and waste. Key Stage 2 children were asked to take part in the design and decorate a ‘best dressed plastic bottle’ competition. We had lots of fun (and mess!) creating amazing designs from mermaids and sharks to aliens and rockets while learning the importance of reducing, re-using and recycling plastic. After learning about the importance of reducing our plastic consumption, Elm and Chestnut Classes went on to do a litter hunting activity with the local volunteer group ‘The Pick-Up Artists’. We scoured our clean and tidy school grounds expecting not to find a great deal BUT we were shocked to find as many pieces of litter as we did – including a crisp packet that was nearly 20 years old hidden in the bushes! Well done to the children for working so hard and thank you to ‘The Pick-Up Artists’ for giving up their time to help us.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café Spotlight on garment repairs Linda Iles, one of our garment repairers who is also a dab hand at glueing broken pottery back together writes, “A few years ago Mark, our farm manager at that time, told us about a conversation he’d had with the mother of one of his children’s friends. She said she’d had to buy new school shirts because buttons had come off the old ones (she’d thrown the old ones away!). This may be an extreme example of a throwaway society but it made me realise that my fairly basic needlework experience was more than many people could lay claim to, or perhaps could be bothered to use. The idea of a Repair Café is both sociable and socially-useful: a meeting place where skills could be shared, items saved from the dustbin and a more resourceful and resilient community built up. I was happy to volunteer for the monthly sessions and soon found that there was a lot of fun to be had, as well as some challenging repair projects! Transporting a sewing machine and various bags of useful materials and tools to St George’s Hall is quite an effort but, once settled, I can expect a stream of minor clothing repairs and alterations as well as some first aid for dolls, teddies and other soft toys and requests for help with threading up seldom-used sewing machines. It was on my second attendance that my own machine gave a little ‘pop’ and puff of smoke – I wasn’t even using it at the time. The smell of burnt-out electronics soon attracted a group of keen fellow repairers, one of whom took the machine apart and found a capacitor which had cooked itself. He ordered another online and at the next Repair Café fitted it. It cost me £2.62. Not all our attempts are so successful. In fact, very few of my attempted glueing mends are successful, even by my standards, but I hope they encourage people to have a go themselves. After all, we repairers are only ordinary folk”. As Linda says, it is surprising how even straightforward skills such as sewing a button or a patch on a shirt seem to have been lost. While we do not wish to compete with professional services for garment alterations and repairs, we can help people give a new lease of life to well worn clothing and even purchases from Charity shops that can be repurposed with a little work. As with all our repairs, we encourage the customers to sit with the repairer who will, when appropriate, help them to carry out simple and safe repairs themselves. The next Bewdley Repair Café will be on 16th November in St George’s Hall. Due to the long queues of customers with clocks. we have recruited extra repairers with skills to assess and carry out straightforward clock repairs. 51
