The Bridge January 2020
January in the Forest Janus, the Roman god of the New Year, looked both forward and backward, ushering in the new and closing the door to the old. We all step through the door into 2020 and another year in the forest starts to unfold. The more you look, the more you see, and winter is not so ‘dead’ as you might think. Look out for leaf buds swelling on Honeysuckle stems, early Hazel catkins and new shoots of Dog’s Mercury. Grey squirrels are still active in all but the harshest weather and bats break hibernation to fly out hunting if nights are mild. There may still be enough berries on Holly, Hawthorn and Rose to attract pigeons and various members of the thrush family (Blackbirds, Redwings, Fieldfares, Song and Mistle Thrushes). The Redwing was photographed by Mick Farmer in a Bewdley garden, and places like this are often a better source of food for wildlife than field hedgerows or woods. You may have the privilege of being visited by a flock of Redwings feeding or arriving at dusk to roost in thick cover. Their soft calls have earned them the local name of wind thrush or whin thrush. Their summer quarters are generally in Scandinavia but some are now breeding in northern Scotland. The days are slow to lengthen and I like to spend some of the dark evenings planning my garden, making changes in the design and planting. Most gardens can offer enough space for at least one small tree and care in choosing will benefit you and our wildlife. A wide variety of Hawthorn, Birch and Sorbus are available. The native Rowan or Mountain Ash, Sorbus aucuparia, is a small, elegant tree which has creamy-white flowers in spring and brightens the autumn with prolific red berries and red or orange leaf tints. A valuable constituent in our ancient woodland, it is a good tree for gardens, offering welcome light shade in the summer but allowing the weaker winter sunshine to penetrate. Trees such as Hazel and Dogwood can be coppiced when they get too large for the site, and in order to avoid a drastic cut a few stems could be cut to ground level each year. Small pieces can be brought into the house and kept for a week or two in a vase so that you can watch them respond to the warmth. Your garden could also be brought to life by introducing nectar-bearing flowers such as Primroses, Wood Anemones and Violets which are also found in the Wyre Forest. Seed merchants offer many British-raised wildflowers, but stalwarts such as the White and Red Dead Nettle are likely to appear unbidden and can offer an early season snack to hungry bumble bees. You know how everything you read in magazines and newspapers in January is all about Fresh Starts and Moving On: Doing Better This Year and generally reflecting on being a thrusting go-getting improved model of humanity? Well, sit back and loosen your waistbands. I'm not going to dwell on overindulgences you wish you hadn't participated in, your lack of exercise or mushy brain. Get over it. It's always like this in January and by February it will all have fallen into place. No, I'm going to take up Phil Harris's amusing article last month and urge us all to be more Feckful. I'm aware that we all have a deep, deep well of Things Much Better Left Unsaid; the sort of thing you blushingly recall having said that afternoon. The middle of the night is when you wake up remembering them. Mostly they aren't outright malicious, but, hmm, sometimes they are. Here's a few to demonstrate what I mean. 1. I don't grow those you've got over there. I think they're rather common. 2. I don't read books by him; I prefer something well-written. (Or the classic "I don't have time to read". Usually prefaced by "I don't know how you manage to read so much.") 3. I find that colour very difficult to wear, being so very bright. 4. Well, you could always let the seam out a bit. 5. I only eat organic. (Can be "I only shop at Waitrose".) 6. I can only drink the coffee I get from a little shop in Henley-on Thames. 7. I'll give you the name of my personal trainer; you'll soon notice the difference on your hips. 8. My neighbour had that and she was dead in a month. 9. I didn't know you could still buy those. 10. Can you manage that? Said in pseudo-caring tones. And to finish: a sentence the Bridge team would like to hear: "Can I deliver some Bridges for you?". Well, I'm just saying. More on p11. Margaret

Delivering the Bridge Over a hundred of you will know all about the joys, perils, unexpected encounters and other experiences of delivering this magazine to both sides of the bridge. The Wribbenhall side collect from All Saints' and have a loyal army of deliverers. Our aim has always been to get as many people as possible to deliver just a few magazines close to where they live. A few years ago two of our readers undertook the big task of trying to rationalise the job on the St Anne’s side so that there were deliveries to every street. It turned out to be much more difficult than it had seemed at first. Things like holidays, ill health, increasingly creaky limbs all meant that areas were left uncovered. We held a crisis meeting. Not quite Cobra, but we needed a Plan. And here it is. In future, when an area is missed for any reason, there will be copies of the magazine at these town centre places. •

Aladdin A Panto on a Shoestring Saturday 18th January 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm After receiving the sad news that Bewdley Community Theatre’s production of ‘Aladdin’ was unfortunately cancelled due to funding concerns, in true pantomime spirit the cast decided that the show must go on. A rescue plan was hatched to produce the panto on a shoestring, with all proceeds going to charity. The local community rallied round and a venue was quickly found (St Anne’s Church); sound and lighting were offered by local company A.P. Technical Services and Bewdley Kemp Hospice charity shop stepped in with offers of costumes and props. Some cast members were unavailable for the new performance date in January, so all stops were pulled out to re-cast certain roles, efforts even included scouting for talent (successfully!) at Sunday evening karaoke events in Bewdley! Some stalwart local actors also stepped into the breach, along with (at the other end of the spectrum) the Chair of Bewdley Rowing Club in the role of the Emperor of China! So a true community panto is back on track! With just 5 weeks to show date, the cast are up against the clock but determined to deliver a fun-filled show for a fantastic charity. Calls for support with props and valuable skills will be going out via their Facebook page Panto on a Shoestring so please pay a visit. Aladdin will have two performances at 3.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 18th January in St Anne’s Church, Bewdley. Ticket prices are £7 adults and £5 children and can be bought from Kemp Hospice Charity Shop and Wyre Forest Books. The link to on-line sales can be found on our Facebook Page. The cast hope to have sell out performances to start the New Year with a bumper fund raiser for Kemp Hospice and Victim Support.

Bewdley Library By the time this edition of ‘The Bridge’ is delivered the future plans for Bewdley Library will be out in the public domain, unfortunately the deadline for this piece falls before the announcement so I won’t be able to fill in any details yet. As it is I imagine the time you read this will be in that period just before New Year or just afterwards when perhaps unwanted relatives are still lurking and the after effects of over indulgence may be repeating on you. If that’s the case and you need to escape the house for a change of scenery you could always pop into the library for a brief respite. We still have a daily paper delivered and a number of magazines for your perusal in a welcoming and warm environment, which we hope has developed since we moved in here three years ago. If you’ve got a number of books you’ve received as presents still unread you could come in and browse. A large number of library visits consist of people doing just this and I have found this is usually most prominent in our non fiction section. Although this part of the library is comparatively small, we stock a number of titles on temporary loan from other libraries, usually from The Hive in Worcester, so that there is always something new to choose from. These books can usually be found with the front cover outwardly facing on display shelves rather than placed in amongst the rest of the non fiction. So whether we see you or not over the festive season, we’d like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope to see you soon.
Taizé January12th in St Anne’s February 9th in Friends Meeting House both 6:30pm.

Courier Fraud Courier fraud is locally on the increase. A phone caller pretending to be a police officer who is investigating unidentified activity/ fraud in their bank account and that they must cooperate with the ‘investigation’. The victim is then persuaded to withdraw funds and hand them over to the 'investigators', either by some remote means or in person to a courier. The victim is told that if the bank cashier queries the large withdrawal that they are to say it is for work/repairs in the home. Alternatively the victim may be asked to hand over bank cards, vouchers or other valuable items. They may also be asked to transfer funds to another account, which is controlled by the fraudsters. In some cases a victim is encouraged to hang up the phone and dial 101 to confirm with the police that the request is genuine. In these cases the line has stayed connected to the fraudster, who puts on another person to confirm this. In some cases a dial tone is played to the victim so they think they have called the genuine police. This is why we advise putting down the phone and waiting 10 minutes or using another telephone line. This way victims can be sure the call has disconnected from the fraudster. Don’t fall victim, report any such incident to the Police, using another telephone if you have access to one. Never give or transfer money to the Police or act on a bank’s telephone instruction without checking first!

Bewdley Medical Centre Happy New Year to all our patients – we hope you have had a happy and healthy Christmas celebrating with family and friends. Now that the New Year is here, we thought we would share with you some ways to continue to be protected from the winter weather. Bewdley Medical Centre is supporting the national Stay Well This Winter campaign, so that our patients stay healthy for winter and ward off common winter illnesses. Our patients with long-term health conditions and those over 65 are most vulnerable with increased risk of blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. There are a number of things you can do to protect yourself against the cold weather: ▪ At the first sign of a cough or cold, get immediate advice from your pharmacist before it gets more serious. ▪ Speak to your pharmacist about medicines you should have in stock over winter. ▪ It is important to keep warm in winter, so heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F), if you can, you might prefer your living room to be slightly warmer. ▪ Make sure you get your flu jab. Making the right choice ▪ Sore throat or cough? You can self-care.Very minor illnesses and injuries can be easily treated at home using medicine cabinet essentials like plasters, bandages, antiseptic creams and over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol and cough medicine. ▪ Diarrhoea, runny nose, painful cough or headache? Visit your local pharmacy. Your local pharmacist is a highly trained healthcare professional and can give you the advice and medicines you need to treat yourself when you have a common health problem, which does not require attention from a doctor or nurse. If you are still unsure, you can access advice via askmyGP via our website. ▪ Vomiting, ear pain, stomach ache or back ache? Book an appointment with one of our ANPs/GPs. If we are closed call NHS 111. ▪ Cuts, rashes or strains? If you need medical treatment or advice that does not need a visit to A&E, urgent care centre is the best choice. You do not need to make an appointment and you will be seen by an experienced nurse. ▪ Choking, chest pain, severe bleeding or blacking out? Go to A&E or call 999. If you need immediate emergency care for serious illness or life-threatening situations go to A&E or call 999. Look in on vulnerable neighbours and relatives Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪
are safe and well, are warm enough, especially at night, have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather. If you're worried about a relative or elderly neighbour, contact your local council or call the Age UK helpline on 0800 678 1602 (8am to 7pm every day). 23

Bewdley WI The December meeting was our Christmas Party evening, with a variety of delicious food to suit all. We held our annual 'No Tat and Promises' Auction, which was hosted by our own 'Auctioneer' Caroline, who did a great job. This year, half of the monies raised will be given to a local charity 'Nightstop'. They find overnight accommodation for homeless 16 -25 year olds. Members also brought in donations consisting of toiletries, new nightwear, socks, underwear and little gifts to give them to hand out at Christmas. An enjoyable evening was had by all. Happy New Year to all.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café Spotlight on a volunteer. Helen Ferguson is one of the volunteers who greet customers as they arrive at the Repair Café. Helen, from Northern Ireland, trained as a Secondary Biology and Sciences teacher and later in Primary and Nursery Studies and has lived in Bewdley for 20 years. She says, “I think I have always been fascinated by the natural world, fostered by my father who had a particular interest in trees and birds. He was manager of a large recycling firm and my sisters and I used to marvel at cars being crushed and metals being separated on a huge scale. He mended and made items in his wonderful home workshop in a rescued railway carriage. Meanwhile my mother had been brought up to value everything and was the ultimate re-user and recycler. I have lovely patchwork quilts, which she created from many different fabrics left over from garments made by my grandmother and other family members. It has been so interesting to meet a great range of people arriving with a miscellany of items. We never know what will appear. We have been touched by stories about items of particular sentimental value. Often these are clocks and I wonder if we become attached to these because they have faces which, through time, can become as familiar as people. At Reception, when people leave, we inquire whether a repair has been successful and it is really pleasing to note the delight with which people have been reunited with treasured items restored to good working order and to read their appreciative comments.” Helen Ferguson The first Repair Café of 2020 will be on Saturday 18th January in St George’s Hall.

Wribbenhall Knit and Natter One of the latest activities of this ever-busy group has been a Nativity scene. It was a request from the hospital Chaplaincy team who needed a group of figures to travel round Kidderminster Hospital in the lead-up to Christmas. The charming figures were swiftly forthcoming and during December, Mary and Joseph made their way round the wards and clinics, arriving just before Christmas where they joined the rest of the figures at the large Christmas tree in the Atrium at the yearly carol service.
A New Use for the Bridge Magazine The Christmas card at St Anne's Church this last Christmas rather took our fancy. If you look carefully, you may recognise the angel's dress. We were assured that it was only out-of date magazines being used to create these unusual angels!
Drone’s eye view of Bewdley by John Ward The ariel pictures were taken with a Mavic air drone. I've always had a interest in photography, taking pictures from unusual and obscure angles. Being fortunate enough to live in such a beautiful town, it gives me the opportunity to persue my hobby of photography. The photograph is not in the camera but in the mind’s eye. John Hill
News From Summerdyne Nursing Home We have a resident who used to be very involved with All Saints' Church, Wribbenhall. She was responsible for creating window flower arrangements for the church (she had her own window), helped out in the kitchen when required and attended the Knit and Natter Group. Our resident likes to keep in touch with the Church and visits to see her many friends there. When we heard the Church were raising funds for their church roof, we were eager to help. Two residents (including the lady in question) attended the Opera Evening on Sunday 17th November to help raise funds. We are also supporting the Church with their Christmas Wreath Festival and the Home have knitted and crocheted a fantastic woodland wreath.

Bewdley Town F.C. It’s been a frustrating autumn for Bewdley Town F.C. as the bad weather decimated fixtures and saw many key games postponed. The pitch at Ribbesford Meadow underwent work to improve drainage during summer 2017 and despite the ground’s proximity to the River Severn, very few fixtures have been lost in recent campaigns. Hopefully some drier spells will ensure we get through the winter months without too much more disruption. January sees a busy run of home games for Town, with the “top of the table” clash versus Shifnal Town rescheduled for Tuesday 7th January under the floodlights at Ribbesford Meadow. During the weather - enforced layoff, the squad have kept fit with regular training sessions on the 3G pitch at Baxter College, and thankfully returned to League action late in November with a 1-0 victory away to Wem Town, and thus maintained second place in the West Midland Regional League Premier Division. The club does rely on a small hard-working committee of volunteers, and recently lost one of their longest serving officials when our Treasurer for the last 15 years Jo Payton, stood down. The club gives their sincere thanks to Jo for the sterling job done. If you feel you have skills or ideas that could help the local football club go forward, please contact Chairman Geoff Edwards via the Contacts page on our website www.bewdleytownfc.co.uk. We are always keen to discuss sponsorship opportunities, so if you feel your local business could benefit from linking with the town's Football Club, we would love to hear from you. From programme adverts, pitch perimeter advertising boards, shirt sponsorship – even stadium naming rights, there are several options for all budgets. It would be great to see the match day crowds continue to rise in 2020; just a few more regular supporters make a big difference financially to the profitability of matches. Admission charges are £5 adults and £2 concessions for all games. Next Home Fixtures – all subject to weather. Community News Sight Concern Now that Christmas is over, most people would agree that any present which gives enjoyment over and over is better than a gift that only provides that feeling once. Could you give the gift of time? At Sight Concern many of our clients who are living with sight loss say that a visitor calling in regularly makes a huge difference – for some that could be for a chat, companionship, helping to read correspondence over a cuppa and looking through the newspapers. Others would like to get out of the house, walk around their local area or take part in an activity. Could you be the person to make that difference to blind or partially sighted people living in the Wyre Forest area? The activity and time commitment depends on the person and the volunteer – so this could work for anyone whether you have an hour to spare once every week or two, or if you are able to support someone to take part in an activity or buddy up on a hobby that you already enjoy. Our Website has a dedicated SocialEyes opportunities page which gives information about some of the requests we’ve had around the county. Anyone interested in finding out how to become a SocialEyes Volunteer should get in touch with Jackie Murrall,Volunteer Coordinator on 01905 332908 or E:info@sightconcern.co.uk. For general information about Sight Concern Worcestershire please call 01905 723245. More information can also be found on our website www.sightconcern.co.uk/socialeyes. Life's Little Pleasures I would like to celebrate the tinier moments of warmth us sentient beings experience. I'm going to concentrate not on the more obvious - a dewdropspangled cobweb, a full-throated thrush at dawn, an exquisitely-fashioned creamy sponge cake - but the moments when we exhale softly, lean against a chairback and think, "Mm. That was nice." Here's one. An anxious face fixes your eyes and says, "Where's - Browns-thegrocer?" or -"the A456 to Leominster?" or "somewhere I can buy petrol?" - and, crucially, you know! Admittedly you have to be able to answer with clarity; it's no good remembering that actually they'd be better off going right just there, not straight on, or that it's closed on Tuesdays. But if you can speak with quiet authority to guide the Lost One, then, "Mm. That was nice." Have you ever lost your front door keys? Well, of course you have. Do you remember that feeling when you remember you went down the garden just before you left the house to pick some flowers, retrace your steps, and see the keys on the wall? Mm. That was nice. Women only - though maybe not, on reflection: Have you been wearing some rather nice shoes to go into Kidderminster even though you knew they were a bit on the tight side? Then got back into the house after a long shopping session and slipped them off and wiggled your toes? Mm. That was nice. And just to finish; have you foolishly agreed to meet up with an acquaintance you first met many years ago and can't somehow shake off even though they are very hard work, then had a phone call from them the evening before saying they couldn't make it after all? Mm. That's nice.

St. Giles, Heightington The charming little chapel of St. Giles, Heightington was built in the early 13th century. The earliest record of 1325 shows it as being a Chapel of Ease and it is possible that King John, who was known to have enjoyed hunting in the Wyre Forest, could have come here to pray. In the l8th century the building was shortened by 20 feet and a gallery added to create extra room. The 19th century brick porch has a l7th century boarded door which leads to a single nave and chancel. There are two ogeed light windows in the south wall and a l3th century lancet window and two 17th century square headed windows in the north wall. The roof has 3 bays with I7thcentury king-post trusses. Although the interior walls of the church are almost entirely whitewashed over, in places it can be seen that a wall painting scheme survives intact over much of the north and south walls. These paintings are potentially of immense national importance, being a very rare survival from the early l3th century. It is hoped, in a proposed restoration programme, to uncover these paintings described as "one of the most exciting discoveries of Medieval Wall Paintings in England in recent years". Used regularly for worship, this ancient chapel has a very peaceful and prayerful atmosphere. It is situated on a route which, before the building of the Bewdley bridge in 1447, was the main route from the Redstone Ford over the River Severn to Cleobury Mortimer and Wales. From the church there is a wonderful panoramic view of the Abberley Hills, the Malverns, Bredon Hill and the Cotswolds.

Kemp Christmas Events Hailed As A Success Two of KEMP Hospices’ big Christmas fundraising events have happened over the last two weeks with the Santa Fun Run on December 1st and Light Up A Life on Saturday 7th. The Santa Fun Run at Brinton Park saw a total of 461 people take part across the three runs (1k, 5k and 10k) and the 25-mile cycle which Colin Hill was a great turn out given the weather we’ve had recently. The whole community got involved and there were some great teams representing families, friends and local business and someone even celebrated their birthday by taking part. KEMP are delighted with the way the event turned out and want to thank everyone who ran, marshalled or helped out in any way, especially their sponsors St John’s Club. They are asking everyone who took part to ensure they get their sponsorship money or donations into KEMP by Christmas so they can start putting it to good use. Saturday saw the return of the annual Light up a Life remembrance service. A blessing was given next to the Christmas tree at The Swan Centre with special guests Freddi and Niven who performed their beautiful song It’s Your Time Now, using this song to raise funds for KEMP. It was then followed by a wonderful service at the Town Hall and the Kidderminster Valentines were there to support the event as well. This was a family event and the KEMP For Kids team put on an excellent Christmas grotto for children of all ages to enjoy. Head of Fundraising, Cathy Sloan, said, “We’re really grateful to everyone who turned up, took part, volunteered, fundraised or gave so generously in any of these events. Every penny raised is spent right here in the Wyre Forest providing support for patients, families and carers who are experiencing life-limiting illness and or going through bereavement.”
