Olympic Fun at Bewdley Primary School
Children at Bewdley Primary School enjoyed a week of Olympic fun before breaking up for the Summer Holidays. Activities included;
• A sponsored mini marathon, which raised an amazing £5,000 for a new fitness trail on the school field – a permanent legacy of the 2012 Olympics. • The day was made extra special by Olympic Torch Bearer Robin Jarvis spending the afternoon in school giving the children an opportunity to see and touch the Olympic torch.
• A special Olympic week where each day children took part in a different Olympic activity. The children were split into 4 teams, England, Scotland,Wales and Ireland, which added a competitive spirit to the week. Sports included cycling, running, football, a swimming gala, wheel chair basketball and blind football. • The activities ended with a massive water fight for children and staff on the school field!

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
What a month August turned out to be! No, I’m not talking about the weather for once. Talking about it did no good at all; the rain continued to pour enthusiastically down. I’m talking about how our British spirits, already buoyed up by Jubilee celebrations were further raised by Olympic fever.
“I hope it encourages us all to take up healthy exercise”, my walking friend mused as we leant on a gate admiring the view. “Research suggests it has no lasting effect at all”, I replied, always ready with a cheery answer. Well, maybe not. But I reckon we Bewdley inhabitants are healthier than many, living as we do in a hilly area. Our secondary-age pupils mostly seem to walk to school along what must be one of the loveliest routes to school in the West Midlands, keeping obesity at bay and getting strong muscles into the bargain.
I’ve been able to see some of the less well-known hilly bits as I planned my Bewdley Views day this month. (I do hope you’ll join in.) Tucked away behind some of the houses are gorgeous views from gardens that drop away to valleys below. Others have quirky views across old mossy roofs to the hills beyond. One view looks over the church straight across the bridge. Yes, there are definitely compensations to having to climb hills wherever we walk.
So there’s my post-Olympic promise to myself this month: quit grumbling and leave the car behind as much as possible, hills or no hills. Next month: Margaret Takes Up Beach Volleyball.

'Pieces of Wyre' by Fenella Flack
takes us on a journey around the Wyre Forest area, presenting a collection of literary pieces in prose, poetry and even play format – all based on true historical accounts and facts, illuminating town and village life in this area from as early as the 7th century.
It is on sale at Bewdley Library, Bewdley Tourist Information Centre and Kidderminster Library or direct from the author at 23 Stourport Road Bewdley (tel: 400691).
St Anne’s Helper - Reg moves on
For over a year St Anne’s Church has had links with Sunfield Children’s Home in Clent, which caters for children with complex learning needs including autism. At St Anne’s, on a Friday, Edna Flegg and Gill Grey have been entertained by Reg, a young man who has been helping to serve tea and coffee to the visitors to the church.
Reg has now left the school to go back home to Essex. His parents put on a special evening at the school to thank all who had helped their son on his difficult path to adulthood.
Gill and Edna were invited and they were delighted, moved and cheered in turns by the occasion. “He’s not always been easy to have with us”, they said. “But when you see what has been done for him and what his parents have fought so hard to get for their son, it makes you very humble and grateful for what you have”. Now Edna and Gill will have a quieter but calmer Friday morning at the church each week.

Community News
It's a fair bet many people will wonder why our annual Show has been cancelled this year. For the first time in decades local fruit, flower and vegetable growers along with those who excel in culinary and artistic pursuits have been denied the opportunity to show their talents in Bewdley's Annual Horticultural Show.
Normally scheduled for the second Saturday in August, the first problem was a clash with the last day of the 2012 Olympics, you can imagine TV being a better option. We decided to move to September the 1st. Along came the second problem; there were very few entries being made, our move was clashing with other shows and allotment shows in the district. So, when we added up these problems and their effects and then considered them against the weird year of difficult growing conditions the decision to cancel became an obvious one.
Never mind, all is not lost, we will be back next year and hope to stage a show to compare well with all the preceding ones. This October there is still opportunity for Society members to take part in the Autumnal mini-show, where there will be many classes to enter.
Finally, just to remind you, meetings are held on the first Wednesday evening of each month over at Shaw Hedge Community Centre in Wribbenhall, where members old and new are always welcome.
Stuart Williams, Secretary to Bewdley Horticultural Society.
Bewdley Open Views September 9, 11.00am – 4.00pm
Your chance to look at bits of Bewdley you would otherwise never see. Sixteen kind people have allowed us to go into their gardens to look at their view. This event, organised through St Anne’s Church, is completely free.
Just go into the church to collect your leaflet, then follow the map to see the best views Bewdley has to offer. Take your camera – there’s a photographic competition judged by the Bridge magazine’s own Gary.

Bewdley Historical Research Group
Community News
The Group, which began in September 1981 under the guidance of David Lloyd of Ludlow, starts its 31st season with the A.G.M. on the 10th September.
It will, however, start without Angela Purcell, a founder member who died suddenly on 11th May while on holiday. She had been its secretary for most of the 31 years. Despite ill health, she was actively involved in research, was a member of the editorial team and set up the 23 publications produced by the Group members.
Angela Purcell
She also found time to research and write two of these, From Hide to Leather, the story of the tanning trade in Bewdley and Paper, Books & Sealing Wax, booksellers and stationers with reference to Bewdley.
She worked as an assistant curator at Bewdley Museum from 1972 until 1993 and then continued as a volunteer working on the Museum's photographic collection. The 23rd publication, Law and Order in Bewdley, will be available shortly. Angela also ran the Worcestershire Marriage Index, a record of marriages between 1660 and 1837 in the County, for the Birmingham and Midlands Society for Genealogy and Heraldry.
Do you have a keen interest in a particular aspect of Bewdley's history or in the compilation of databases?
If so there are a few vacancies in the Group, which meets on Monday evenings from 7.30 till 9.30. It would be helpful if you can work with computers and carry out research using Worcester Record Office although this is not essential. Contact the Group on Bewdley 403582.
Wribbenhall Iamme Karate Club
has cause to celebrate this month as its founder and Chief Instructor, Sensei Gordon Hogg, has recently been awarded a well deserved upgrade to 5th Dan by his peers at the British Sankukai Karate Association. The Club has been established at the Wribbenhall Parish Rooms for ten years and in that time many youngsters from local schools have benefited from the teachings of Sensei Gordon, who has unique ability to combine the discipline of martial arts with the most important element for all sports - FUN!
The Club re-opens its doors after the summer break on Monday, 3rd September at 4.45 for five year olds up and 5.45 for seven years to adult when anyone is welcome to pop along and give it a try.
The newly upgraded Sensei Gordon, 5th Dan is always keen to help the local community to be the best they can be and better.

A Day In the Life of a Receptionist by Kim Simmonds
The first in a series of articles on “A Day in the life of medical centre team members”.
No day is the same in the medical centre. Even after 19 years there are always new challenges, which is what makes the job so interesting. My day will start at 7 or 8 depending on the day of the week, and the first task is to switch all the computers on in readiness for the morning surgeries. At 8 o’clock the telephones automatically switch over and from then on they are constantly ringing throughout the day. Recently a new system was introduced, which should mean the calls are directed to the most appropriate department.
All receptionists have a variety of roles which include working in the back office answering phones, administration tasks including booking transport, scanning all hospital letters and working on the reception desk in the waiting room meeting the patients attending the surgery. The main role is to book appointments and we try very hard to accommodate patient’s requests. However this is not always possible during holidays and busy periods. An extremely busy but enjoyable team environment to work in. Pound Green & District Villagers are holding a

Bewdley Football Club Oakengates may well have been the underdogs going into this match, but you would never have guessed that from their performance. They took a shock first half lead with a breakaway goal that left the Bewdley keeper with little chance. Once Bewdley had got over the shock, they piled on the pressure for the rest of the half, hitting the post before Chris Hough grabbed the equaliser. Bewdley took a first half lead when a Spider Watkins cross was bundled over the line by Ollie Smith, it remains a mystery just which part of him got the final touch!
In the second half Bewdley made several changes and did look the fitter side but were unable to capitalise on that extra fitness. In the gathering gloom it looked like they would hold onto the lead. Unfortunately, with the switching on of the floodlights, Oakengates got sight of the Town goal and scored a deserved equaliser ten minutes from the end of the match.

BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2011/2012
Bewdley Town Council
The Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
1. Bewdley Town Council was created in 1974 following the reorganisation of local government in England & Wales before which it had been a Borough within Worcestershire. It now forms part of Wyre Forest District Council, which is one of six District Councils within Worcestershire. 2. Bewdley Town Council has 13 Town Councillors all of whom are elected for a term of four years and whose names and contact details appear at the foot of this report. For voting purposes, Bewdley is divided into three Wards, which are Bewdley West (4 Councillors) and Bewdley East (4 Councillors) on the west side of the river and Wribbenhall (5 Councillors) on the east side. 3. The Town Council Elections took place on 27th May 2010 and hence those then elected have completed the second year of their office. 4. On 5th May 2011 a by-election took place in Bewdley West, which resulted in Councillor Roger Coleman being elected for what was then a three year term. 5. The Town Council year begins officially with the Annual Meeting of the Town Council. This is also known as “Mayor-Making” when the Town Councillors elect a Mayor, a Deputy, the Town Council’s Committees and Advisory Groups, and representatives to outside bodies. This took place on 13th May 2011 when Cllr Dr Jan Adams was elected as Mayor and Cllr John Latham as Deputy Mayor. 6. The Town Council and Planning Committees meet once a month. They generally do so on the first Monday of each month unless that happens to be a Bank Holiday in which case they take place a day later. There will have been twelve meetings during the course of this Council year with the final meeting scheduled to take place on 8th May 2012. 7. The attendance record for the 11 meetings to date of the Town Councillors is set out below Planning Committee Council Cllr Dr Jan Adams * 11/11 Cllr Mrs Linda Candlin 11/11 11/11 Cllr Roger Coleman 11/11 11/11 Cllr Mrs Anne Cox 10/11 10/11 Cllr Mrs Liz Davies 10/11 10/11 Cllr Mrs Louise Edginton 10/11 10/11 Cllr John Foulkes 11/11 11/11 Cllr Mrs Carol Gittins 11/11 11/11 Cllr Paul Gittins 11/11 11/11 Cllr Mrs Jennifer Greener 10/11 10/11 Cllr Derek Killingworth * 11/11 Cllr John Latham 11/11 11/11 Cllr Julian Phillips * 11/11 * not on Committee 8. The Town Council holds its formal meetings in the Guildhall, which is owned by the District Council but made available as and when required for Town Council purposes.
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
9. The Town Council is actively involved with a number of organisations in Bewdley on which it has representatives namely: Christmas Lights Festival, Civic Society, Community Health & Facilities Group, Community Transport Helpline, Bewdley Development Trust, Environment & Town Centre Group, Fair Trade Committee, Bewdley Residents’ Flood Committee, Bewdley Medical Practice Patients’ Advisory Group, Bewdley Museum Management Committee Bewdley Old Grammar School Trust, PACT, Riverside Children’s Centre and the Twinning Association. 10. In addition the Council has representatives on the following organisations: Kidderminster & District Youth Trust, County Association of Local Councils Executive (CALC), Citizens Advice Bureau, Wyre Forest Community Emergency Planning Forum, Wyre Forest Matters Local Strategic Partnership) Wyre Forest Parish Forum and Wyre Forest Parish Games.
Staffing Matters
11. Mr Stephen Inman is Town Clerk and will shortly have completed his third year in that role. The Mayor’s PA is Mrs Karen Raine and the Treasurer is Mr David Moore. All three are part time employees. The payroll function for the Council is carried out by the District Council. None of the positions is pensionable.
Civic Matters
12. Civic Ceremonies involving the Town Council comprise: St. George’s Day Parade in April, Annual Meeting of the Town Council (Mayor-Making) in May, Mayor’s Sunday in June, Bewdley Festival Service in October and two Remembrance Services in November with a morning service at St. Anne’s and an afternoon service at All Saints. 13. The Mayor undertook a full and extensive programme of engagements during the year being invited by many local organisations to their functions. She also arranged several fundraising functions for her two charities: Midlands Air Ambulance and Dementia UK. The Deputy Mayor also undertook civic duties in the Mayor’s absence as and when required.
Civic Awards
14. It has become a tradition in Bewdley for the Town Council to organise the “civic awards” and they have now done so since 2000. Nominations for awards are invited during the autumn from which the winners are selected by the Civic Awards Panel. This year there were two successful nominations who accepted their silver engraved medals and certificates at a ceremony on 22nd March. They were Mr Allen Birch, aged 93, born and bred in Bewdley and still at that age climbing mountains such as Snowdon to raise money for local charities and Mr Bill Sedgeley who has had a long association with the Scouts, the Order of Buffalos, the Bewdley Institute and the Wribbenhall Parish Rooms.
Bewdley Town Council
Town Maintenance
ANNUAL REPORT
15. The Town Council pays for the servicing of the Town Clock on St. Anne’s Church Tower and during this last year arranged for an automatic mechanism to be installed, which was designed to avoid manually having to re-set the clock after any power failures or the change in hour each spring and autumn. 16. The Town Council owns nine bus shelters. All these bus shelters have been provided from funds of Worcestershire County Council but are maintained and repaired by the Town Council. 17. The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memory of people for whom Bewdley was a special place. 18. The Town Council owns and maintains 7 lifebelts on Severnside North, Severnside South and in Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis. This last year has seen a welcome reduction n their losses with no replacements being required as a result of anti-social activities, such having been a problem in the previous two years. 19. The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street, which are used for Christmas lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hanging baskets. Again it is pleasing to note that during the last year there has been no obvious damage to them from vehicles (in contrast with previous years), which has resulted in costs being saved. 20. The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all voluntary, not for profit organisations in the town are able to advertise events taking place in Bewdley, subject to liaising with the Town Clerk as to a suitable slot in the diary being available. Due to high demand, it is necessary to limit advertising to a period of one week per event to run from Sunday to Saturday. Any adverts must also comply with the requirement that they are not so wordy as to cause a distraction for motorists. 21. The Town Council has continued to pay the running costs and maintenance of the Wyre Hill Play Area which costs in excess of £4,000 per annum. 22. The condition of Bewdley’s rural footpaths is monitored by the two Parish Footpath Officers. 23. The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointed by the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work to be done on trees in the Town. 24. The Town Council continues to engage Mr Bob Carlyle to act as its Lengthsman. The role of the Lengthsman is to carry out a wide range of minor works mainly in the town centre but also outside. He will for example deal with the removal of overhanging vegetation where it obstructs the pavement or footway or the removal of weeds from the “splitter” islands along the by-pass or the unblocking of grids and gullys from mud and debris where such work can be done on his own.
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights
25. The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall/HSBC and around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up for the summer and winter seasons. As promised the Council committed funds to the purchase of six new planters – all in a suitable Bewdley blue shade; two being outside the Guildhall, two close to HSBC and two by Borough House next to the telephone kiosk. Despite fears as to possible damage through vandalism, they have remained in place and intact. 26. Also as promised the Town Council invested last year in some 12 new hanging baskets for Load Street and Severnside South. These are a big improvement on the previous ones and each have a reservoir facility to take up water as needed which means less watering in dry weather. 27. The Town Council provides the Christmas Lights which are switched on for a period of about six weeks from late November into the New Year. It pays the cost of installation, maintenance and dismantling at a cost of £3,900 together with the cost of the electricity. This year the Council were obliged for reasons beyond their control to invest in a complete set of 900 new light bulbs. As they are of the low energy variety (but still sufficiently bright) there should be some saving in electricity costs. 28. The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which is centred on the Rowing Club and formed part of the Carnival entertainment in June. This coming year however, the fireworks coincided with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend.
Town Planning Issues
29. Through its Planning Committee, which meets each month, the Town Council maintains an active role in planning matters. All planning applications in Bewdley are referred by the District Council to the Town Council Planning Committee for its views as statutory consultees. During the calendar year 2011some 131 applications were considered and recommendations made for either approval or refusal – up from 120 applications in 2010. 30. All Planning Committee meetings of the Town Council are open to the public and generally take place (subject to occasional changes) at 6.15pm prior to each Council meeting. 31. The Town Council were troubled to find that one of the short listed sites with potential to be allocated for gypsies and travellers by the District Council was in Bewdley namely that on Stourport Road behind the Blackstone picnic site close to the by-pass. It therefore organised a public meeting at Bewdley School to sound out the views of local residents as a means of then putting forward its formal submission to the District Council. This was for rejection of the site on a total of seven grounds including the land being within Green Belt, at risk of flooding and highway access issues. Subsequently the District Council dropped the site from its list.
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
Communication with residents
32. The full agenda and minutes of the Town Council and the Planning Committee are available on the three town notice boards situated in the Load Street Car Park, on Load Street outside the Mayor’s Parlour and inside the covered entrance to The Guildhall. The minutes can also be viewed at the Library. 33. During the course of the year there have been changes to the Bewdley website www.bewdley.org.uk This site is hosted by Bewdley Development Trust but the Town Council is able to input pages of information to a dedicated part of that site alongside Friends of Bewdley Museum. The content is gradually being transferred and should be completed in the course of the next few months. 34. The Bridge magazine devotes one page each month to “Town Council News”, which is written by the Town Clerk and includes four or five items of interest from the Council meetings and additional information relevant to people in Bewdley.
St George’s Hall
35. The Town Council has followed (though with no direct involvement) the somewhat slow and occasionally faltering progress of plans for the refurbishment of St George’s Hall, which is being coordinated by the Bewdley Development Trust. The delay has been caused by uncertainty over funding from central government. The value of the overall project is likely to be in excess of £1 million. The Town Council agreed to make a one-off financial commitment of up to £10,000 towards professional fees.
Bewdley Medical Centre and Library
36. Two issues, which have been dominant in the thoughts of Town Councillors in recent months, are potential relocation of the library and the medical centre away from Load Street 37. The Town Council was disappointed to learn last year that despite many years of project work being carried out with a view to planning approvals being given for a new medical centre on site, the favoured scheme put forward by the developers, doctors and Primary Care Trust fell foul of the view of English Heritage on the grounds that its three storey design was too high. This resulted in the proposals to move off site with one next to All Saints Church on Kidderminster Road, Wribbenhall, being flagged up as a possible option. (Note: since this report was first presented, another option being considered is to relocate to an area within the Dog Lane car park.) 38. In anticipation that the present library site would have been required by the new medical centre (and before the English Heritage objection was known) the County Council began the search for alternative sites for this important feature of community life in Bewdley. The Town Council has been consulted by the County Council as to the possibility of moving the library to the Guildhall though at present the Town Council has reserved its position on the matter pending a sight of more detailed plans. (Note: since this report was first presented, the County Council has decided not to proceed with this idea.)
Youth Facilities
Bewdley Town Council
ANNUAL REPORT
39. The Town Council continues to support the Youth Café through contributions and activities of individual councillors. It has now been open for three years and is regarded as one of the most successful in the local area with its design, management and workings being used as a basis for similar ventures in other towns. It continues to operate on a very tight budget with a perennial threat of closure through lack of a regular income stream.
Policing in the Town Centre and Anti-Social behaviour
40. The Mayor and Town Clerk had a meeting with the Chairman of the Police Authority and her Superintendents for North Worcestershire to express concerns about the reduction in the number of Beat Officers on patrol in the town centre particularly with the transfer and subsequent retirement of Sgt Chris Aimes. The Town Council does though have good contacts with Sgt Jan Shore based at Stourport and to Inspector Paul Crowley at Kidderminster in charge of local policing in the Wyre Forest area.
Localism
41. The Localism Act is now on the statute books and like all Parish and Town Councils across the country. Bewdley Town Council now has to think seriously about how services currently provided by others eg the County and District Councils could be run and organised locally subject to a whole host of detailed provisions and satisfactory arrangements being put in place. The Town Council has met with the Leader and Chief Executive of the District Council to discuss the broad principles that might apply and further work will continue to establish which services might be delegated and run locally.
Finances
42. The bulk of the Town Council’s income continues to come from the Precept. This is the sum of money which the Town Council raises from householders in Bewdley. It forms part of the overall Council Tax levied by the County Council, West Mercia Police Authority and the Fire & Rescue Service, which is collected on their behalf by Wyre Forest District Council. For an average Band D householder who pays £1,510.36 in Council Tax, just £21.52 is spent by the Town Council. 43. The Budget Working Group of the Council met on several occasions during the autumn to discuss what could be afforded and at what cost and made some savings where it could to certain items of expenditure and increased some where it was prudent to do so. The level of Council Tax levied remains unchanged for what is the third year running – see table below. However Councillors have expressed the view that with general increases in the cost of provision of services it becomes more difficult to maintain that policy. Nevertheless with good house-keeping the Council again managed to underspend on its budget and add to reserves. The Council is debt free.

44. As a result of that underspend, the Council has continued to build up a reasonable level of reserves. This is important given the overall uncertainty about public expenditure and what may be required to be funded by the Town Council in the future which is funded elsewhere at present. 45. Like ordinary savers the Town Council has until now received no or very little interest on money it has had on deposit with the Bank or with the District Council. However, in the last few months an exercise was carried out by the Finance Working Group to identify getting an improved return. As a result apprx half of the Council’s reserves have been deposited with NatWest Bank in a deposit account earning interest of up to 4%. 46. For the year 2012/13 the Town Council has agreed to make £10,000 worth of grants to local organisations, which had applied for assistance. Voluntary and community organisations who would be interested in applying for a grant should make contact with the Town Clerk. Income

1st Wribbenhall Guides Meet the Queen
On the 17th July six Guides, four Young Leaders and their Leaders went to Worcester hoping to see the Queen. Together with other uniformed groups, Worcestershire Girlguiding had been invited to line the route for the visit; in the morning at The Hive and later along the route to the Cathedral. We had excellent views of the burgundy Royal Bentley and its occupants.
Whilst waiting for the Queen to leave The Hive, an official came and asked Mollie Smith if she would like to give the bunch of flowers she had picked that morning from her garden to Her Majesty. It was also Alice Burford’s birthday, so one of our Young Leaders kindly gave her the flowers she had bought so that she too could get close to the Queen. Both girls were placed in a prime position to await the party leaving the building and they were thrilled when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh spoke to them both and accepted the flowers.
What a lovely way for two Guides to do their Duty to the Queen. It will be a day we will never forget; sadly we didn’t have Gary Mayner and his camera with us so could not get close enough to get a good picture. (Picture from stock - ed)

Energy Conservation in Listed Buildings A Transition Bewdley Meeting on 13th September
We are all concerned about increasing energy prices and the impact on our finances. Many of us are also concerned about the potential dangers of climate change and the impact that human use of fossil fuels has.
Most people in Bewdley will have carried out some simple energy saving measures. However, for many householders living in the Conservation Area it is difficult to go further than this. On 13th September Transition Bewdley will host a meeting on "Energy Conservation in the Conservation Area" where we will explore options for making listed buildings more energy efficient and how you can get permission for insulation measures and even install photo-voltaics and solar water heating on old buildings. We will hear how this has been achieved in other areas and discuss how similar improvements might be achieved in Wyre Forest district. The meeting will be held at Bewdley Baptist Church at 7.30 p.m.
Meanwhile, anyone wanting to start saving energy in their home can borrow a home energy monitor from Bewdley Library. Thanks to the Carbon Reduction team at Worcestershire County Council, every library now has a monitor which local residents can borrow. Simple to set up and use, in less than two weeks you can start seeing a reduction in your electricity bills. Children especially love playing the "let's see if we can get it down to zero" game as they start turning off appliances. Then the essential appliances such as fridges and freezers go back on but maybe some of the energy guzzlers such as TVs and computers no longer get left on for hours while not being used.
It's fun and it saves money and perhaps does a little towards saving the planet as well! Why not give it a try? John Rhymer, Transition Bewdley Energy Group

Dear Editor,
Letters to the editor
You have recently carried articles calling on us old fogies to cut the young generation some slack. We understand that the many can be maligned because of the behaviour of the few but sometimes the few can appear to be the majority!
Take what happens in Northwood Lane park on most Friday and Saturday nights. The youngsters collect there and stay well into the late hours. Once it gets dark, the drunken screaming starts and it's enough to keep those that live close by awake and unsettles anybody who hears, because they don't know whether one of the girls is being assaulted or not. (I have seen girls, who look no older than 13, totally senseless through drink and being 'helped to stand up' by their male friends. More than once I have felt sufficiently worried for their welfare to call the police.)
Then in the morning, the site of their 'partying' is strewn with beer cans and spirits bottles, take-away cartons, fish and chip wrappings and crisp packets. Every Saturday and Sunday council workmen have to arrive early to clear all this up.
This behaviour in the park does not jaundice my view of the majority of young people whose attitude to life in general seems to be better than mine was at their age. But I do wish that somehow the responsible majority of them could influence the idiots in their midst and stop them spoiling life for those around them.
Northwood Lane Resident

Tails of a Veterinary Practice
life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.
A few weeks ago, one of my humans was telling me of a trip to London she had been on recently. Whilst she was there, she was very fortunate to meet Bob. For those of you who don’t know, Bob is a famous TV star cat who has lots of videos on You Tube and a bestselling book. Bob is happy and well looked after and particularly enjoys the scarves that his fans have knitted for him.
However things were not always so good for Bob, who was once a lonely stray who was injured and in need of help. Luckily he was found by a human called James, who was also homeless and lonely. The human got Bob some urgent veterinary care and they soon became the best of friends and are now inseparable.
Unfortunately not all cats are as well cared for and loved as Bob and me. Recently three abandoned kittens were brought into the surgery by a kind human. They were tiny and weak and I was upset when one of them died. Luckily my lovely team of vets and nurses were able to nurse the remaining kittens back to good health and managed to find them a loving home with one of our work experience students. Please take good care of your pets

Friends of the Museum Volunteers 2012
It has been a Summer holiday of mixed weather; as ever a hardworking team of volunteers have been supporting the Museum Officers and Assistants at Bewdley museum. The first modern Cherry fair was on 28th July - an opportunity for those who enjoy dressing up to get involved to create a great atmosphere across the site. There was a history walk led by staff and volunteers. The volunteer air raid wardens enjoy the opportunity to get into costume, introducing visitors to Bewdleys unique air raid shelter.
One of the most memorable aspects of a visit to the museum has always been watching a clay pipe being made in the traditional way. Volunteers now have the opportunity to learn to make pipes and demonstrate the skill to visitors. We are keen to keep brass rubbing available to visitors. Young and old alike enjoy this simple, rewarding activity. The green fingered volunteers can put their skills to use around the museum site.
If you would like to spend a few hours every now and again meeting visitors to the museum, we are holding our second drop in session on Saturday 8th September at 10.30am in the sawyard area. Please pop in for a coffee and a chat with some of the team. There’s no obligation! Come and learn a little more about what you can contribute to our gem of a museum in the heart of Bewdley. No previous experience necessary! Jenny Robbins

Nominated Neighbour Scheme West Mercia is a safe place to live and crime figures remain low. The Nominated Neighbour Scheme has been launched by West Mercia Police to help elderly and vulnerable members of the community feel safer in their homes and reduce the chances of distraction burglars targeting the area. A distraction burglary involves criminals tricking their way into a home by taking advantage of the trust shown to them by the occupier.
How does the scheme work? You can request a ‘Nominated Neighbour Card’ from West Mercia Police. Before you use your card, arrange with a trusted neighbour, friend or member of the family who lives nearby to be your ‘nominated neighbour’. Ask them if they will be prepared to help you deal with callers at your door, including confirming their identity and accompanying them into your home while they speak to you. Once you have a ‘nominated neighbour’, write their address into the space provided on your nominated neighbour card.
How to use your card • Keep your card near the front door. DO NOT leave it on display in a window. • When someone calls at your home, try to look through the window to see if you recognise them. If you don’t know them, show them your card through the window. • If you need to open the door, ALWAYS use a door chain or bar. • Give them a few moments to read your card. DO NOT speak to them. • If you have a telephone, call your nominated neighbour. Tell them you have had a caller and they are coming to speak to them. • Wait for the caller to return with your nominated neighbour.
Remember
genuine callers will not mind waiting. It is your home. You do not have to let anyone in. For more information about the Nominated Neighbour Scheme or to request a card contact: Bewdley & Rural local policing team at Bewdley Police Station. Phone: 101 Ext. 3901. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6th August 2012 Bewdley Transport Package Councillors considered the results of the County Council’s consultation earlier in the year as to what improvements the public would like to see to the “public realm” ie pavements, lighting and amenities in the town centre. There was a sum of £250,000 available. The public’s top priority had been to improve pavements. The Town Council agreed that was important but they were concerned that any improvements to pavements should be with good quality stone/slabs and not “imprinted” concrete or asphalt. The Council expressed disappointment that attempts to produce a scheme to reduce congestion and pollution in Welch Gate had been inconclusive and felt at least a mini roundabout at the bottom of Welch Gate would assist. Bewdley Medical Centre Following the public meeting held at Bewdley School on 26th June, the Town Council were keen to ensure that the parties to the scheme (the Doctors, the Developers, NHS Worcestershire and the District Council) were making good progress in finding a suitable town-centre site. The District Council Leader had written to say that discussions were ongoing as to the Dog Lane car park site but no conclusions had yet been reached. The Town Council will continue to seek regular reports given the level of public interest. Water Supplies The water supply failure which occurred for a period of eight hours or more on 23rd July prompted a discussion by Councillors as to what contingency plans Severn Trent had to maintain supplies ie bottled water to households in which there were vulnerable people whose health and well being depended upon a constant supply. It was agreed to ask for confirmation from Severn Trent and from Social Services and the Health Authority that lists of such residents were readily available. Bewdley In Bloom The results of this year’s Bewdley In Bloom competition were reported and it was agreed to send a letter of thanks to Mr Hugh Morgan, Secretary, and his colleagues to congratulate them on their continued organisation of this event and their encouragement to residents to take part. Future Town Council meetings
Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 3rd September, 1st October, 5th November and 3rd December.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

S e pte mb e r i n t h e Fo re s t
I live surrounded by the majestic oaks of the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve and get used to seeing their stately forms showing me the changing light of each day and signalling the seasons of the year. When I go into Bewdley or other towns and cities around us, however, I see that fewer and fewer trees are tolerated along streets and in gardens. They fall to make way for underground cables, buildings, roads, wider access, more light, fewer leaves to clear up etc. “What did the trees ever do for us?” you may ask, in the manner of “The life of Brian”. I’m sure you know at least some of the answers, which are all very important to us humans even in the 21st Century:
• They pump out oxygen into the atmosphere • They make the local climate more pleasant for us • They are a source of renewable energy • They support hundreds of species of wildlife • They give us fruit and nuts • They give us timber – a material with wonderful properties of strength, durability, beauty and workability which is renewable and biodegradable. Oak is probably the dominant tree in the Wyre Forest not only because of the local soils and climate but because it has been selected by generations of local inhabitants, craftsmen and merchants as the most useful and valuable timber available. As firewood it gives out a good heat for a long time – a well-seasoned log or two will keep the fire in at night. Converted into charcoal, it can burn with temperatures high enough to smelt iron. Its bark can be used to tan leather and the
wood is strong and durable: perfect for all kinds of uses from casks to ships. When cut radially the wood shows a lovely silver grain, which is especially valued for panelling. Being of the female variety and of a former era of schooling, I never learnt how to work with wood, so I’m very interested in a series of courses being offered at Uncllys Farm starting this autumn. The “Introduction to woodworking” course will be one day a week for 6 weeks under the experienced eye of Wade Muggleton, who was a cabinet maker before he joined the Worcestershire Countryside Service. There will be 3 more courses over the coming months so anyone interested should speak to John Iles on 01299 488083 (or john@wyreclt.org.uk) as soon as possible. The Forestry Commission’s Discovery Centre at Callow Hill has a range of exciting events on offer over the next 2 months:
Saturday 29th September - Fungus Forays 10.30am to 12.30pm from Earnwood car park , 2pm to 4pm from Hawkbatch car park. (Both of these car parks are on the B4194 north of Bewdley.) Cost £7. Booking essential. Sunday 30th September – Forest Discovery Day 11am to 3pm. Free activities to encourage all the family to get more out of their local forest.
Sunday 14th October - Fungus Forays 10.30am to 12.30pm from Hawkbatch, 2pm to 4pm from Earnwood. Cost £7. Booking essential.
In addition Forest Friends are a group of pre-school children and their carers meeting every term-time Thursday from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities. Then there are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday starting from the Forest Cafe at 11am to build fitness at a gentle pace.
