Bewdley Cricket Club

The Cricket Club has been part of life in Bewdley for nearly 70 years. In 1968 the club moved from Stourport Road to its present ground in Lower Park from where it currently fields six adult and six junior sides, playing in various Worcestershire Leagues. The 1st XI is currently pushing for promotion back to Division One after relegation in 2011, while the 2nd XI continues to hold its own in the top division. Spectators are warmly welcomed to come and enjoy local cricket with weekend games beginning at 1.30pm in this beautiful riverside setting. A particular welcome is extended on Sunday 7th July when the club hosts its annual six-a-side competition with fun for all the family throughout the day. The junior section has been rejuvenated in recent years. Fridays in the season see as many as 85 seven to seventeen year olds attending a lively evening's practice, while parents enjoy the club's facilities. The club is now in a position to put forward its younger players for district and county trials and soon hopes to see its juniors representing Worcestershire Young Cricketers. Supporters are always welcome at junior matches on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.00pm and Sundays from 10.00am.This year’s Summer School for seven to fourteen year olds takes place from 5th to the 7th of August with no experience necessary. The club always welcomes new junior members: contact Ann Combes 07870 752274 for further details. Bewdley’s success can be measured in many ways. Senior players have enjoyed the honour of playing for the Worcestershire League representative team in matches against other counties' league teams. Older members of the club have shared in the success, and several members regularly play in the Worcestershire over 60’s and over 70’s teams. Healthy numbers of active players, sound finances, a refurbished clubhouse and a dedicated team of organisers, Club Officers, volunteers and coaches means that cricket in Bewdley will be here for many years to come. Bewdley Cricket Club is always looking for new players for all senior and junior sides: contact Chairman Robbie Combes on 07896 022681or at r_combes@hotmail.com We can be followed on Facebook and Twitter and have an informative and updated play-cricket website.

International cricket comes to Bewdley on Monday 12th August when the club hosts a match between the Worcestershire over 70’s team, runners up in the National League, and their Australian counterparts. Look out for more details of this prestigious event in the next few weeks.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to July’s edition of The Bridge in what we hope is the height of summer. If you happen to be reading this in the rain, Gary’s pictures are here to remind you of June’s sunshine. Our centrefold celebrates both the Carnival and Pub and Club Regatta, days that brought the crowds flocking to town.

This month, we meet apprentice Harry Burns from the butchers in Load Street on page 15 and introduce Linda Candlin, Bewdley’s new Mayor who is offering haircuts to support her chosen charities, on page 35.

Our sports focus takes us to Lower Park to discover what is happening at the Cricket Club and what some of Bewdley’s youngsters get up to on Friday nights. Allen Birch is far too young at 93 years old, to have walked up his last mountain and is looking forward to his next attempt to ascend Snowdon. Find out more on page 9.

Peter Johnson marks Dr.Who’s 50th birthday on page 29 by recalling when the Daleks came to Bewdley. Do please send us your stories of other events that took place in St. George’s Hall as we look forward to the opening of the refurbished building.Turn to page 31 to hear the latest.

Did you know that Bewdley produced 8% of the national cherry crop in the 1950s and in mediaeval times held an annual cherry fair? Brian Stephens of Bewdley Civic Society tells us more about the town’s connections with this delicious fruit on page 33. Look out for the special events in town at the end of the month. And don’t forget the Regatta on the same weekend if you want to see what real rowing can look like. Sorry, Last Again!

I hope you have a jolly July, whatever the weather. Gill

A walking man for all seasons

On display at the exhibition ‘If the shoe fits...’ (Bewdley Museum 22 July – 22 September) is a pair of walking boots that have clocked up an impressive 13,000 miles in the last 20 years. During that time the wearer, 93 years old Allen Birch of Spencer Avenue, Wribbenhall, has raised over £20,000 for charitable causes. In his recently published book ‘Bewdley born and bred’ Allen describes the challenges he has faced completing five sponsored climbs of Mount Snowdon. Beaten back by 70 mph gales in 2009 Allen and his group of friends felt the full force of Snowdon’s unpredictable weather systems. At 2300 feet they turned back and faced a hazardous decent – even the mountain railway had stopped operating. Another ascent is planned for this summer and monies raised will benefit the Midland Air Ambulance. Allen’s book is a fascinating history of Bewdley and its characters during his lifetime. From his life as a stable boy and would-be jockey at Winterdyne, school days at Lax Lane, building manager at Brinton’s Carpet company and his life-long scouting career. During the second World War he was posted to a number of countries in Europe and to Egypt with the Royal Engineers, building bridges and clearing landmines. Through the pages of his book Allen leads us around the streets of Bewdley describing which family lived where and giving potted family histories along the way. There is a fascinating insight into life at Winterdyne during Allen’s childhood and teenage years. At the time it was owned by the widow of Napier George Sturt – a famous explorer of Australia. It took a staff of 20 to keep the estate running and Allen recalls earning 10 shillings (50p) a week for his stable duties – money that his father made him take to the Midland Bank (then on Severnside South) where the manager, Mr Perrin, provided him with a savings box which could only be opened by the bank staff. Proceeds from the book go to the Midland Air Ambulance, copies £10 from Des Birch, 07818092562. Peter Johnson

Topical tip: Leaving a small patch of wild grass is good for butterflies: gatekeepers, meadow brown, Essex skippers. A shoot or two of nettles in a sheltered position against a wall or fence can attract the caterpillars of the small tortoiseshell, peacock comma and red admiral, some of our best loved garden butterflies.

Behind The Baton

More than just a last night....

From the 12th July right through to early September, an amazing festival of music takes place in London. Of course, The Proms are best known for the patriotic "Last Night" featuring music from Worcestershire’s most famous musical connection, Edward Elgar. However there is so much more to the proms than that last night. Over 100 concerts of every type and genre are on the schedule, not just classical music either, but jazz and even an urban music prom this year!

Every year brings the anniversary of a well known composer’s birth or death and this year, in the bicentennial of Wagner’s birth, the complete Ring Cycle is going to be performed. If that ‘s a bit heavy going for you, there are much lighter programmes available as well, including many concerts tailored to appeal to people who maybe haven’t attended a classical concert before.

Obviously the Royal Albert Hall isn’t exactly round the corner from Bewdley, but you could still be there within 2-3 hours and with standing tickets at only £5, the cost of travelling is offset by the great value of the ticket. Alternatively, the BBC are offering even greater coverage this year on both radio and TV including some highlights shows, so you can get a flavour of the atmosphere from your own front room. The BBC proms website www.bbc.co.uk/proms has all the information you need. Alastair Elliott

All artists and craft workers in any style or medium are warmly invited to take part in our annual event. Everyone is welcome, whether professional or keen amateur, an individual or a local group or organisation. We are very pleased to have the support of our friends at Bewdley Baptist Church which will be open on Saturday 24th to exhibit their craft work and also to invite you to take part in lots of 'hands on' activities.

Pleased to meet you: Harry Burns Apprentice Butcher

My present job, in Bewdley Quality Butchers, is a bit of a happy accident as it certainly wasn’t on my agenda until last September. Seven years ago I got a Saturday job there when I was still at Bewdley High School, cleaning, fetching, tidying and generally making myself useful. Then when I left school I moved with my mum to Bristol and had a job with a Classic Car company. But mum missed Bewdley and we moved back here last year and I needed a job. I approached Sam at the butchers and although he wasn’t needing anyone at the time he had an idea and applied for one of the government’s new Apprenticeship schemes. I started in October on an eighteen month course, and I’m really enjoying it and learning all sorts of stuff. I have to keep work books detailing the paperwork attached to the job – Health and Safety, hygiene, heavy lifting, all that sort of thing. My first practical exam (which I passed!) was to take a whole lamb carcass and turn it into a display of cuts and joints that the customer could buy. There’s a real art in doing neat tidy butchery that doesn’t waste a single bit; no two carcasses are the same and how and where you cut is very important. And did you know that those chain mail gloves and aprons some butchers wear are considered by real butchers to be more dangerous than learning how to hold and use the very sharp knives safely. The gloves give a false sense of security and can make you careless. I have to use them in the early stages but soon I’ll be expert enough to dispense with them. I love the challenge of continually learning the job and get on well with the friendly but quite strict people I work for. The apprenticeship inspector visits regularly and seems pleased with my progress which is good. My favourite part of the job is serving the customers and having a laugh and chat with them. Then there’s the fun of inventing new products like chicken breasts in barbeque sauce, which we should have perfected by the time you read this. So all in all, I think I’m very lucky to have this job in the town I love.

Community News

Now that the weather has improved, the Museum Herb Garden is finally blooming and bees are buzzing around the flowers. The vegetables, planted in the boxes next to the Air Raid Shelter by volunteers, are growing well too – ‘Dig for Victory’ in action. The first event in July is ‘A Georgian picnic’ when visitors can enjoy period dancing and music, treats and historic games. Visitors can come along, bring a picnic and even ‘Dress like a Georgian!’ all in conjunction with The Copper Pot. As a revival of the Bewdley Cherry Fair, the Museum’s Cherry Festival will take place at the end of July. There will be food and drink, music in the gardens, and traditional crafts and activities all linked to this seasonal fruit. An ‘Orchard and History Trail’ is planned for the first day of the event; please ring for more details. The ever-popular Bewdley Open Studios exhibition, running until 14th July, showcases works of art by local artists and craftspeople. This is followed by a fascinating and unique exhibition ‘If the shoe fits…’. The displays will feature footwear from local people including an Olympian, a soldier and a polar explorer. Each pair is connected to a life-changing experience. For details of the above and opening times please refer to our website: www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699. What’s on in July at the Museum: 6th: Georgian Picnic: Bewdley Museum and Jubilee Gardens, 11am – 3.30pm 6th - 28th: Bewdley Pieced Together: A Bewdley Themed mosaic exhibition in the Severn Gallery 20th: If the shoe fits....: A temporary exhibition in the Wyre Forest Gallery 27th - 28th: Cherry Festival

Bewdley Historical Research Group

The Research Group recently received £200 from the Midcounties Co-operative Community Fund towards the cost of producing their 24th publication due out later this year. The book “Bewdley, A Miscellany”, is a collection of articles about Bewdley that were too short to be published in the "Occasional Paper" series. The research concerns a wide range of subjects that are of too much interest to simply remain unread in the Group's archive. The Research Group provides a facility for the public with family or local history queries to visit the Local History Room at Bewdley Museum. A member of the Research Group is usually available on Wednesday mornings between 9.30 am and 12.00 noon. It is advisable to contact the Museum prior to visiting on 0845 603 5699. Charles Purcell

The deadline for the August issue of The Bridge is the 10th July

Pub and Club Regatta The Bewdley Rowing Club’s Pub and Club Regatta again drew huge crowds who enjoyed the sunny weather and the exciting racing last month. But what of the intrepid crew whose training exploits we read about in the last Bridge.......?

Pub and Club – the race

High river levels and holidays deny us our last two training sessions so it’s onto the race. We’ve been drawn against a crew of four fit young men and they warm up on the ergos. Just one look at them tells us we have little chance. Determined to pull something out of the bag, we climb into the boat and head for the start. Our opposition makes a hash of turning the boat round.A glimmer of hope: perhaps they’re not as good as they look. They pull away from the first stroke and then it’s all over. We have a good race with no mishaps but lose by two lengths. Last Again, we get out of the boat, wondering if it’s time for a new name.

Bewdley Carnival

The crowds came out in their thousands to watch Bewdley’s Annual Carnival on Saturday 8th June.

The route was packed with smiling people, enjoying the parade this year in glorious sunshine. Attractions on the carnival field kept people entertained for the whole afternoon. The parade was attended by Bewdley Mayor Linda Candlin and Mayoress Jennifer Gordon, Stourport Mayor Ken Henderson and his wife Lin, Kidderminster Mayor John Campion, Fran Orboski - Chairman Wyre Forest District Council and her consort Tim Ingram and local MP Mark Garnier. • • •

The winners of the floats were: Youth Group: Bewdley Girl Guides with Beauty and Beast Pub, club and sport group: Bewdley Floral Art Commercial, Private, Charity group: Far Forest Show

Winner of the Classic/Vintage cars was Brian Brickstock with his 1968 Mini Traveller. Bewdley shop window competition was won by Bewdley Pet Shop, Kemp Hospice Shop in second place.

Community News

Well, high sun, high light and the longest day! Excellent growing conditions and how the garden is responding! At last all the tender plants are in their beds and the greenhouse is set up with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies and aubergines (the so-called egg-plant….the purple ones don’t look a bit like eggs).

The early potatoes are showing their purple flowers so it won’t be long before I can dig the first roots and enjoy that delicate taste of the good earth. I like Arran Pilot, an old favourite, which is reliable, clean and a thoroughly good-doer. The thrill of the first salad is with us. I have picked lettuce and radishes. Still have to buy tomatoes, but their time will come.

The set on the fruit bushes and trees looks good this year, so fingers crossed for a good harvest. The “June drop” (when the apple trees get rid of all the fruits that won’t mature fully) will be late this year. The Lord Lambourne apple has suffered some late frost damage though, so not everything is perfect….but that’s gardening! The long days have made the lettuces and rhubarb bolt to seed. It’s a shame, but to be expected as these are “shorter day crops”.

Bewdley Library

Don’t forget to prepare for the Horticultural Society Show!

The Summer Holidays, my favourite time of year second only to Christmas, will soon be upon us. Our Summer Reading Challenge is always popular with youngsters looking for occupation in the long holiday (parents – it's free!) and one of the rewards of working in a community like ours is that through the challenge we see children grow up and make progress year after year. It's also believed that those who read through the summer are less likely to have a post-holiday dip in their reading level when they return to school.

The reading challenge is for children aged between four and twelve. The challenge is to read six books over the holiday period with a catching up time at the beginning of term. The theme for this year will be 'Creepy House'. Keep an eye out at the library for the launch at the end of July.

We would very much like some volunteers to help us this year, in particular those between 13 and 19 years old. It's an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, confidence and skills for the future. If you could spare a minimum of five hours over the summer, please text your name to Natalie on 07876 144905 to find out more. Have a good summer! Kay Sanderson

When the Daleks invaded Bewdley

Everyone must be aware by now that this year is the 50th anniversary of the creation of Dr Who. Not so well-known by many local residents will be that a pair of Daleks spent a week in Bewdley in 1976 appearing on stage in St. George’s Hall. ‘Pot Luck’ was the town’s annual variety show featuring acts from local organisations such as the Music Club, Civic Society, Mother’s Union, Women’s Fellowship and Scouts and Guides – to name but a few. That particular year, thinking I could improve on the script writing at the BBC, I co-wrote a sketch entitled ‘Who’s in the car park’ in which the Daleks appoint themselves mayor and mayoress of Bewdley.

Daleks and cast members outside the Co-op in Worcester Street, Kidderminster on the way to Bewdley

David Thomas, co-author of the sketch, said: “During our time as scout leaders of the 3rd Bewdley troop, Pete and I wrote many sketches together. We got by on hand-built props – a shark constructed from chicken wire and the mighty Stonehenge created from TV and fridge boxes”. But Pete decided that we must have the real thing for Dr Who and collected the Daleks from the BBC props department in London. However, the space baddies didn’t come without problems. First, the hall stage had to be enlarged so they could glide about safely. Then, at the last minute, we had to carve a piece off the stage to comply with fire regulations. It was worth the hassle. I can recall gasps from the audience every night the Daleks made their entrance. Even clapping broke out!” Daleks don’t come cheap, even in 1976 they cost £100 for the week, but with true entrepreneurial enterprise they were hired out to Kidderminster Co-op in the daytime for £100 and brought back each night for the show. ‘Pot Luck’ was staged for 7 or 8 years and 1976 was its final year (exterminated by the Daleks?) being replaced by the Scout and Guide show Stagestruck. Any Bridge readers who have stories from Pot Luck – please share them. It was a piece of Bewdley history. Peter Johnson

St George’s Hall Update

Community News

Work continues apace in St George’s Hall with an anticipated opening in August. Most of the external work has now been completed and the contractor, Harpers of Leominster, is busy finishing the interior decoration ready for opening. The DEFRA grant of £805,000 from RDPE European Union funding has now been committed in completing the building works. The funding appeal for fixtures and fittings, launched on St George’s Day, has got off to a flying start with over £40,000 already received from local organisations and individuals. The target is £150,000 and money can be donated through the website www.stgeorgeshall.org.uk or the collection box in Healthpoint Pharmacy next to Barclays Bank in Load Street, Bewdley. SGH Venue Management, the new charitable company set up to run the hall, is now turning its attention to the future operation of the hall.Vice Chair, Roger Key, said “Experience of operating other similar venues like Number 8 in Pershore or Wem Town Hall in Shropshire shows that they run best with a mixture of paid and volunteer staff. We are now opening a register of volunteers for a wide variety of roles. There’s something for everyone to get involved in this exciting new community hub.” The building has a number of spaces for hire ranging from the performance and function hall through to smaller spaces for offices, the Wyre and Severn meeting rooms and the café bar. Various hire rates have been designed to be competitive for community, private and commercial users. People interested in hiring spaces in the building or being added to the volunteers register should call Peter Miller at SGH Venue Management on 01299 405516 or email info@sghvm.org.uk. Bewdley’s Guide Dog Puppies

This is always a difficult time, not just for me but also for the people who enjoy meeting the puppies I walk for Guide Dogs. Lucky will start her training to become a Guide Dog on 22nd July and so will be leaving Bewdley. As yet, I don't know any details of the next pup I will have the pleasure of 'walking', but I look forward to introducing her to the community in the near future. I cannot thank the Bewdley folk enough for the support you give: access to all the shops, respect in terms of contact (May I stroke her?), financial support through the annual collection or through a charity box. Two recent puppies are now both working: Arty is with Gill on the Isle of Wight and Pippin is with George, a 19 year old who starts his university course this year in Birmingham. It would be great to have another puppy walker in Bewdley. Or perhaps you could offer board to a dog for a day, a night or a week. Please consider it. Contact me through the Bridge if you want to know more. Gabi Wootton

Cherry Fair Returns to Bewdley

Community News

Bewdley Civic Society is reviving the Cherry Fair on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July, in the entrance to the Town Hall. The display includes cherry trees for sale, specimens of a range of different cherry varieties, some samples to taste and, depending on the season, varieties of fruit to buy. The trees offered will be on dwarf stocks suitable for gardens, with a choice of several varieties at modest prices. The specimen display will hopefully help people appreciate the types of cherry available locally, and the range of form and flavour to be enjoyed. Bewdley Museum is also hosting a Cherry Festival with local cherries as a theme.

Bewdley Cherry Fair was traditionally on St.Anne's Day, 26th July. A Fair was set up with a Charter from Edward IV in 1472. There is no mention of cherries in the charter, but the date is the nearest of the ancient fair days to the cherry season. So this date seems to have become a Cherry Fair, when or how we do not know. In recent years there has been much interest in old apple varieties and the discovery and rescue of old varieties of cherry is equally important, but often neglected. Twenty sorts of cherry were promoted by John Rea, the famous nurseryman at Kinlet in 1665, others by Thomas Andrew Knight of Downton Castle around 1800, while others local to the West Midlands were popular until the 1950s.

Fifty-six years ago the Bewdley area produced 8% of the national crop making a significant contribution to the local economy. We are attempting to encourage more interest in this delicious fruit and rescue what still remains of a dwindling heritage. Brian Stephens, Bewdley Civic Society.

Bewdley’s New Mayor

Community News

During the Annual Meeting of the Bewdley Town Council Cllr Linda Candlin was elected Mayor on Friday 10th of May 2013.

The ceremonial party, led by the Macebearers and Town Constable, was attended by Mayors from Worcestershire, County, District and Town Councillors, representatives from local clubs and associations and Cllr Candlins' family and friends.

Cllr Candlin went to Harry Cheshire High School and worked in the family salon in Kidderminster. At 28 she married a Bewdley policeman and came to live in a small Bewdley Police house before settling in Northwood Lane. With strong family links to Bewdley as a child she spent many hours exploring Bewdley, picking cherries in her aunt’s orchard, walking the Golden Valley and trekking across fields for a lemonade at the Hop Pole.

Cllr Candlin said “When I was bringing up our three children in Bewdley, I never imagined that one day I would be the Mayor. Over the next 12 months I will make it my mission to ensure I promote Bewdley with all of its vibrancy and energy far and wide.”

The Bewdley Councillor has chosen HEADWAY, who specialise in helping people with head and brain trauma, and Bewdley Concert Band as her sponsored charities during her tenure for the year. She will be accompanied to civic and local events by her sister, the Mayoress Mrs Jennie Gordon

Following the mayor making ceremony all guests joined the Mayor, Mayoress and Deputy Mayor, Mrs Carol Gittins, to a celebratory finger buffet provided by The Hop Pole Inn at the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre.

Community Transport Helpline

Bewdley says thank you to Vince Taylor

The charity Community Transport Helpline works quietly each day at the top of St. Anne’s Church tower making a huge difference to the lives of many people in Bewdley. No-one has made a greater contribution to the work of CTH than Vince Taylor who retired in June from his role as Chief Officer.

After a career in Agricultural Development Projects,Vince was approached by the TocH charity to begin work on forming what turned out to be the precursor of CTH. At the same time he began his training to become a Licenced Reader in the Church of England. There are many parallels between the work of both CTH and the Church and it is these guiding principles of giving help to other people and to the natural world every day of the week that can be found in Vince.

In the early part of the noughties Toc H ceased to operate their local “Thumb a Lift” scheme. Rather than let his work and expertise disappear with the service Vince was instrumental and indeed pivotal in morphing the service into what it is today, a locally based community transport scheme. Over the last decade operating with trustees and volunteers the scheme has evolved into an indispensable community service. It is a service that is set for people who do not have access to conventional transport or are unable to use it. To provide a volunteer based service that is tailored to home collection and return is an endless pursuit of volunteers, trustees, staff, grants, donations and co-ordination all of which Vince has worked to establish and keep in place over the years.

Our community in North West Worcester owes a huge debt of thanks to Vince for his work and commitment to this cause which has enabled thousands to make otherwise impossible journeys.

We all wish Vince a happy retirement, give him our genuine thanks and hope that whatever he tackles in the future will have the same success as Community Transport Helpline. Stuart Williams

First World War Centenary exhibition 2014 We are in the early stages of planning for next year’s exhibition, excited at the possibilities of what we will find and more than a little anxious about the size of the task!

Kidderminster and District Archaeological and Historical Society aim to produce a book to mark the centenary and a visit to their open day, where they shared some material, has encouraged us as we begin our own research. We would welcome help in researching the Shuttle for the years around the war, through booked visits to libraries. In August 1914 the Shuttle reported that the local scouts were guarding Bewdley Bridge. Bewdley featured quite often in the local tribunals held to decide on whether individuals’ own occupations registered them exempt from service. Bewdley’s Mayor received money from the Prince of Wales’ relief fund to provide for the local community. Do you know any details of these stories?

The war memorial at Ribbesford was unveiled on April 11th 1920 in memory of the seventy six men of Bewdley who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-1919 and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission identifies the churchyard at St. Leonard's as an official War Graves cemetery. There are seven War Graves there of men who were wounded in action during the First World War and sent back to England for medical treatment. Do you know anything about these men and their families?

According to their website, what is now Bewdley Town Football Club was at some point called “Bewdley Comrades possibly due to the First World War. The comrades were formed by a group of men who had been comrades during the 1914-1918 war, their headquarters was the 'Old Pack Horse' in Welsh Gate.”

Does anyone know any more about this?

Hopefully this gives an indication of the task and the type of help and information that we are looking for. We would appreciate your help in any way and are happy to team up with any organisation producing work in the Wyre Forest Area. We are not looking to catalogue the war itself - a task which will be covered by many organisations far more expert that we could be - but we want local stories that can reflect how The War changed local lives and coloured the environment in which we all live. Help us on our exciting journey. Please email me at pennygriffiths@tiscali.co.uk or contact us through The Bridge.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD JUNE 2013

Pewterer’s Alley It was reported to the Council that there had been many complaints of anti-social behaviour in Pewterers Alley just off Beales Corner in Wribbenhall. This was particularly a problem at weekends and at night-time. However, as a public right of way it was difficult to close off and in the meantime it was said the Police were aware of the situation and indicated it was on the list of areas for officers to patrol.

Road Closure - Northwood Lane The County Council had given notice that Northwood Lane, which is a no through road running along the east side of the river northwards from Wribbenhall for nearly two miles, was to be closed for up to four weeks for repair works. There were concerns this could impact on local residents but with no alternative route there was no easy answer.

Road Closure – High Street The Council had received notification that the High Street would be closed to traffic on two occasions during June and July. The official diversion for traffic wanting to go from Severnside South and Lax Lane including the Gardner’s Meadow car park towards Kidderminster was to go along the “switchback” road and via Stourport. There was some discussion as to whether in these situations Severnside South could be made two-way with access onto Load Street but again that would cause many problems.

Bewdley Boundary Sign at Blackstone Some years ago the old Bewdley cast-iron road sign at the top of Blackstone Bank had been damaged and then stolen but not replaced. This meant that apart from the sign by the Safari Park, none of the traditional signs remained. Acknowledging it would be futile to replace the sign with a metal replica which would quickly disappear, the Council asked the Town Clerk to investigate the provision of a sign made of some other material. The alternative was to have one of the standard “Worcestershire – Bewdley” signs at a cost of £1600 which Councillors felt was too expensive and not in keeping with the historic nature of the town. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 1st July, 5th August and 2nd September. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. Calling all 8-11 year olds - your chance to go.... Wild in Wyre!

Last summer we had an overwhelming response to our article in The Bridge, and 25 children spent three days of fun and adventure, deep in the wilds of Wyre Forest playing in their own secret location! They had a great time building natural shelters, making bows and arrows, learning how to light a fire and getting messy making their own mud monsters!

So if you don’t want to miss your chance in Summer’13 to toast dampers over a camp fire, play games such as ‘Camouflage Capture’ and make your own string bracelet from the bark of a tree, then book onto the Forestry Commission’s ‘Wild in Wyre’ three day holiday activity for 8-11 year olds. The event is running from Monday 29th until Wednesday 31st July (9am to 3pm) and costs £70 for the three days. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment! Tel: 01299 266929 or e-mail learning.west@forestry.gsi.gov.uk If you are aged between 11-14 years then you may like to know that one of our partners “Step-Out” is running a Living Wild Week from 29th July to 2nd August at nearby Ribbesford Wood. July in the forest

This month should be the height of summer for us. We long for sunshine and some heat, having been deprived of both over the last few years! The longest day is past but the green of the trees continues to deepen and the succession of summer flowers continues: cow-wheat, yellow pimpernel, self heal and bugle replacing the bluebells and lily of the valley in the forest.

This is the time of year when honeysuckle spreads its sweet scent abroad from the trees it uses as support to reach the sunshine. The other name for the plant, ‘woodbine’, refers to its ability to twine up young stems. Its spiralling imprint on the host tree supplies ‘barley sugar’ twist stems which are sought-after by walking stick makers. The beautifullydesigned flowers provide food for dormice and many insects, with a scent that deepens in the evenings to attract pollinating moths. Children used to nibble the ends of the flowers to taste the sugary nectar – maybe they still do! As I write I can hear two or maybe three cuckoos calling across the forest. I hope it has been a successful year for them as, despite their cruel parasitic breeding behaviour, I think the forest would be a sad place without them and don’t want to find myself trying to describe their evocative calls to disbelieving future generations! This month they begin to leave the forest on their long journeys back to Africa. If you love the forest you may enjoy the Forestry Commission’s booklet, “The Wyre Forest”, available at the Tourist Information Centre (Bewdley Museum), the Discovery Centre and Uncllys Farm for £6. It is full of information about the forest’s geology, history, wildlife and management and has some stunning photographs – a real treasure even if I say it myself!
