The Bridge June 2014

Volunteering in the Local Landscape

For the last 5 years, together with about 20 other volunteers, I have been working on practical tasks around Uncllys Farm in the forest. We have undertaken a wide range of tasks including: clearing and waymarking new footpaths in conjunction with the County Council footpaths team, coppicing and managing woodland rides for butterfly habitat with Natural England, planting and laying hedges and fencing wildlife meadows and orchards to enable them to be sensitively grazed by Rare Breed Dexter cattle. My particular interest has been the restoration and management of the traditional orchards which still survive around the edges of Wyre Forest. Road names around 1960’s housing estates remind us of Bewdley’s past as an important fruit growing area. The remaining orchards are particularly rich wildlife habitats even as the trees decay when they reach the end of their lives about 90-100 years after planting. Pear trees can live much longer, up to 200-300 years, and these massive specimens are spectacular in mid April with towering clouds of white blossom. To ensure the preservation of these landscape features we have planted over 400 fruit trees within 5 miles of Bewdley. A further planting of 160 trees is planned for this autumn. As the orchards will be grazed, a major task is building “cages” to protect them from cattle and deer during their first ten years. These orchards will require pruning and other maintenance which is a year round task. The best time however is the autumn harvest and we have the equipment to press and pasteurise the juice from the fruit which would often otherwise be wasted. Another by-product is cider! The fermentation process is essentially very simple and after a recent visit to Hereford Cider Museum and specialist cider makers we are hoping to produce increasingly refined “single variety” ciders this year. We do need more helpers: no experience necessary, just enthusiasm and an interest in local fruit products.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to June’s edition of The Bridge. We were pleased to hear from readers who responded to Margaret’s request last month to tell us about your volunteering experiences in and around Bewdley. Richard Greenwood shares his enthusiasm for restoring Bewdley’s traditional orchards to their former glory at Uncllys farm. Read about this practical work and the plans for cider-making on this month’s inside front page and find out how you can become involved. Uncllys Farm has been the home of Bridge columnist Linda Iles and husband John since 2004. They had always dreamed of having a smallholding or small wood and now manage over 300 acres of pasture with a herd of Dexter cattle and 100 acres of the Guild of St. George’s oak woodland. John has chosen photographs for this month’s centrespread that mark events and places important to him and Linda, including the arrival of mains electricity in their home. Turn to the back page to read about Linda’s encounters with deer in the forest. The Bridge team were in town with their cameras during the busy Spring Fair capturing the May Day sunshine. See Chris and Margaret’s pictures in the centre colour pages. June brings us Bewdley Carnival, another firm fixture on the town’s calendar. As well as all the usual fun of the Parade and Carnival Field, this year’s star attraction is a troop of performing stunt ducks. I didn’t believe it was possible either! See page 23 for details. Elsewhere in the magazine, find news of some exciting art exhibitions on pages 31 and 47, Cinema in the Hall on page 15 and at least three afternoon tea parties, in what we hope will be glorious June sunshine. Behind the Baton

I am writing this after a very busy Saturday in St Anne's Church with Bewdley Choral Society as we rehearsed and then performed our Haydn concert. It's always a great experience, but a very busy day as well. Firstly, there's the Chinese puzzle of squeezing 45 singers, 4 soloists and 13 instrumentalists into the space around the Altar. Then, there is the rehearsal - in many ways more nerve jangling than the concert because it's the first time I hear the choir and orchestra together and it takes some getting used to for all concerned. However, apart from a few minor worries, it went very well.

Finally, there’s the concert itself. I always hate the hour or so beforehand, it's a nerve wracking period, plenty of deep breaths and pacing about going on at the back of the church I can assure you! Anyway, at 7.30 feeling nervous but confident, I marched up the aisle only to notice that the covers were still on the timpani and there was no sign of the player! As I bowed to the audience, I was furiously thinking what to do… I turned back round, and fortunately, out of the corner of my eye, I saw him scurrying up the aisle. A few more deep breaths later, a quick imagining of the speed of the opening movement in my head, it’s time to wave “3,4” to bring the orchestra in and the rest really is down to Haydn and the 70 or so musicians stood before me…. 2 hours later, it was all finished, a wonderful evening, a happy audience and happy musicians, thanks partly to a great performance and I think partly to the brilliance of Haydn's wonderful music.

Don’t forget that on June 14th Nos Novem will be performing the first of our series of Classic concerts in St George’s Hall: Motets to Motown. Look out for Posters around the town with details of how to get tickets. It will be an eclectic evening with some beautiful classic motets from Byrd, Bruckner, Lauridson and more with a few Motown classics and some other favourites in the second half. I promise it will all be finished in plenty of time for you to get home for England’s opening game of the world cup! Alastair Elliott

The Children’s Society house-to-house collection raised £2,157.31 this year. Thank you to all who donated to this much-needed cause; a far greater thank you to all the collectors who gave their time to go round the houses collecting. No-one likes calling at houses, on behalf of charities, risking abuse & rudeness but the charities are incredibly grateful to each one of us. In one road, I called at one house and Mum explained to her son why I was there & gave generously. A few minutes later I found a bare-footed, pyjama-ed young man, of six or seven years old (going by his lack of front teeth!) following me up the road with a £10 note in his hand. He had taken it from his savings & was determined to “help the children”. I asked his mother if I could accept this generosity & she agreed. This young man forgave all the abuse and refusals and made me feel so humble and oh, so grateful; thank you friend. Susan Price

Beverley Coldrick, the charity’s Chief Officer, said “The new name more accurately reflects our role as a transport provider in the Wyre Forest area and beyond. Most of our journeys are made by people only wanting to travel a short distance but we do take people anywhere they want to go provided we can get a driver. About half our journeys are for health purposes and the other half are for social purposes including meeting friends and relatives and shopping.”

More people are using the service and last year passenger journeys increased from 13,000 to over 16,000. Plans for the future include a new purpose built minibus for the mobility impaired and a new livery for the company’s vehicles. Rob Limbrick, one of the charity’s trustees said “Community Transport Wyre Forest is a lifeline for people who might otherwise be housebound. We are run by a board of trustees and are looking for new trustees to join the board. Anyone interested can contact me at the office for more details. Community Transport has operated for a number of years from its base in Bewdley. New volunteer drivers are always welcome. With local bus service provision shrinking the importance of our service will increase year on year.”

Community Transport Wyre Forest is available for anyone to use provided they cannot access conventional bus and taxi services or unable to use their own transport. An annual membership fee of £10 is charged and individual fares are very competitively priced. For membership information or to make a booking contact Community Transport Wyre Forest on 01299 405820 or e mail cthltd@gotadsl.co.uk

The Government’s ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’ is due to be released in early April this year. This is a very generous subsidy to help people change over from fossil fuels to biomass (wood pellet) fired stoves and boilers for their central heating. The subsidy has been announced as 12.2p per kwh and in most cases will pay for a new boiler within the first three years. Wood pellet as a fuel has many other advantages. It is environmentally friendly, sustainable, clean, dust free, delivered in convenient 10kg bags and is far cheaper than oil or LPG. We, at Wyre Forest Stoves & Fuels, will explain the R.H.I. procedure and even apply for you.You can also view a pellet stove in operation.

Say again….?

If you didn’t manage to get to the Hay-on-Wye Literary festival this year, you’ve missed the likes of Stephen Fry, Mary Berry, Barbara Erskine, Lucy Worsley, Chris Evans, Judi Dench and Simon Armitage and Johnny Vegas to name but a few. All skilled in getting their point across in their various fields of endeavour, and no doubt a treat to listen to. I didn’t go either, so all this is an educated guess. The good news is that you can access all this accumulated experience, wit and wisdom through your library service. We have books by many of those who have appeared at Hay, both recently and in the past, and if your local library hasn’t got a copy of the book you require we can order one in for you from a neighbouring library for the modest sum of 70 pence per item; cheaper than a festival ticket, and you get the experience all to yourself. On another topical note, if you struggled with the BBC’s adaptation of ‘Jamaica Inn’, you could always order a copy from us and you’ll finally find out exactly what Joss Merlyn was saying! Hope to see you soon. Kay Sanderson

Bewdley Carnival Saturday 7th June

This year’s Bewdley Carnival being held on Saturday 7th June will see everybody going Quackers with our main event, The K9 Quackers Sheepdog and Duck Show. This entertaining show is a favourite with young and old. Richard and his sheepdog herd the ducks through various obstacles such as the tunnel of doom, the slippery slide and the rings of fire. Richard has some of the best stunt ducks in the business. Richard also encourages the children to come into the ring to form their own obstacles for the ducks to negotiate. Also on the Carnival field will be HCW Championship Wrestling, Simon Airey the Animal Man, Severn side School of Dancing, West Midlands Tae Kwon Do, and Got 2 Sing.

The Carnival parade leaves Hales Park at 1pm led by the Princesses’ float. Carnival Princesses this year are 6 year old Fearne Smith and 8 year old Sofia Tench from Bewdley Primary School and 6 year old Leah James and 9 year old Amelia Perrin Tilt from St Anne’s Primary School. The parade, including floats and walking groups, will travel through Bewdley town centre and along Stourport Road on to the Carnival field at the Leisure Centre. Entrance to the field is Adults £2, OAPS and children under 10 £1 and children under 10 free.

You are not too late to enter the parade with either a float or a walking group and we still have room for a few more stalls on the field.

For further information please ring Sue on 01299 401841

On the 3rd June the Carnival Committee will be holding a Prize Bingo Evening held at the Shaw Hedge Community Centre commencing at 7.30pm. All welcome. Prizes have been kindly donated by local traders. 25

Discover Bewdley Spring Fair Bewdley was busy over the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend with numerous activities in the town including the Bewdley Salad Challenge, Maypole dancing, raft race, walks, markets, a beer festival, music and a horticultural show in Jubilee Gardens. The weather was kind as thousands came to enjoy the entertainment as the Bewdley to Stourport Raft Race kicked off events on Sunday morning with more than a dozen rafts. The food and craft market on Severn Side South and the Local Produce Market on Load Street were busy as people enjoyed the fine weather. Several stall holders commented “how lovely the people are!” The enthusiastic children from St Anne’s Primary School gave a maypole dancing demonstration on Severn Side South which drew a good crowd. The Bewdley Civic Society provided fascinating walks around Bewdley and Wribbenhall which were well supported. A lovely weekend in our lovely town! Spring Fair was co-ordinated by Bewdley Development Trust in partnership with Bewdley Museum and supported by Bewdley Town Council, Bewdley Festival, Bewdley Civic Society, Friends of Bewdley Museum, Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre

Amelie Robinson learns a new skill in a willow workshop, one of many on offer over the weekend.

Here's my lovely wife Linda as we walk up to Easedale Tarn from Grasmere. The stunning landscape of the Lakes inspired Wordsworth and many others. We love the open, wild places makes a big change from our life in the forest.

This picture was taken on 11th February 2014 when I walked the length of the ood defences that we campaigned so hard to get. What a relief that all our efforts succeeded and these properties are now protected. There is still the challenge of getting permanent defences for Beales Corner.

These cables run from St John's Lane to the Guild of St George's properties in the middle of Ruskinland - the land bought in the 1870s by George Baker (who lived at Beaucastle) for John Ruskin. Electricity means we can add value to the oak using a sawmill and wood workshop. By sawing the oak trees that we fell into useful materials such as beams and planks we can get a higher price for it. Sadly at the moment around 90% of the oak used in the UK comes from France. We need to be able to organise and provide oak in the form that the market wishes to buy. And, of course, it's also wonderful in the house after nine years of a noisy and smelly diesel generator!

The Fourth Bewdley Salad Challenge in Jubilee Gardens saw six local chefs competing to win the coveted trophy. Judges Mayor Cllr. Linda Candlin and 2013 winner Mark Flello declared Pomodoro's salad to be the best from an excellent selection that showcased Bewdley's great food.

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

Community News

May and June are such lovely months. The weather is benign. The greenery is fresh, lush and verdant. The garden is in full swing. Mother Nature needs to be watched, however. She encourages plants and weeds to grow in equal measure and she does not have to mow the lawns!

Everything is now planted in the vegetable garden. The old gardeners always talk of hardening off tender plants over a period of a fortnight, putting them out in the morning and bringing them back in at night. A bit like the way they look after their dogs! I’m not so sure that this is entirely necessary. Well, time always seems so short, so the tenderfeet have to cope with more robust treatment. One of the apple trees, a cooker, has decided to take a sabbatical this year, having set no fruit at all. After last year’s bumper crop, I can’t really blame it, although it was pruned in both summer and winter and this normally deals with the tendency for biennial cropping. The other fruits look to have set well and we can look forward to strawberries at Wimbledon time and raspberries to follow. No wonder May and June are such lovely months!

The Museum has two new temporary exhibitions, so there’s plenty to see here during June. From The Mountains to the Sea runs from 17th May to 22nd June and is an exhibition of work by textile artist Georgia Jacobs based upon important geological locations in the British Isles. Georgia will be giving demonstrations on 31st May and 1st June with an opportunity for visitors to create their own pieces of textile art. Bewdley Open Studios opens on 17th May and runs until 13th July and features the work of local artists. Ruskin yesterday and today - Drawing on nature opens on 28th June and runs until 3rd August. "Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have eyes to see them" (John Ruskin). The exhibition explores nature through drawing using images from the Ruskin Collection as inspiration. The exhibition coincides with the museum’s opening of the Ruskin Library, over 400 books collected by Anthony Page and written by John Ruskin. See www.ruskinlibrarybewdley.co.uk for more details. For more information please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699. Remember that the Tourist Information Centre is open daily from 10am until 4.30pm. Discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway.

Our Veterinary Column - Dogs Die in Hot cars

Community News

Yes, as the summer months roll on in, the RSPCA campaign will undoubtedly hit the car park noticeboards and maybe even appear on our televisions.

The temperature inside a car on a normal cool summer’s day can easily and quickly exceed 40 degrees centigrade. This is hard enough for us to cope with in shorts and t-shirt, but imagine if, like our friends, you were forced to wear a furry coat too. Dogs can only lose heat by panting, and they can only sweat from their paws. They just can’t lose the heat fast enough.

This leads to a dangerous condition called hyperthermia (higher than normal body temperature). The poor dogs’ body systems will panic. They will pant so hard that they get exhausted, and even may not take the time to take useful deep breaths to get oxygen into their lungs. Allow this to go on for too long, and the body temperature will rise so high that there will be irreversible brain damage, and even sudden death.

Leaving the window a little open will not provide enough ventilation to cool your pet. They will still suffer. Please do not even consider leaving your dog unattended in a car this summer. It simply isn’t worth the risk. If you see a dog unattended in a hot car, please call the police via 999.

Dogs that are suffering from heatstroke need cooling slowly with water and fans. Once their breathing is under control, please take them urgently to a vet.

Thank you.

Jeremy Hall BVMS MRCVS Severn Edge Vets.

The Mystery of the Knitted Cross

Bewdley's guerrilla knitters have struck again! On Good Friday a knitted cross appeared outside the Methodist Church on High Street and has been attracting interest throughout the Easter season, with passers-by stopping to touch it - and ponder. Could it have been the work of the church's Knit and Natter Group that meets on the second Thursday each month? 43

Your Citizens Advice Bureau Needs YOU!

Community News

We are told the economic news is brighter and this may be true but some are still finding that these are tough times and so the Citizens Advice Bureau is in increasing demand. Our workload is increasing.......there is so much need for the help and experience we give. We have a brilliant team here at the Wyre Forest CAB but we are finding our services increasingly stretched both in terms of manpower and finances. Don't forget Citizens Advice is mainly staffed by volunteers. We are a charity and not a government department and because of this are able to give free and unbiased help to those who walk into our bureau with varying needs. At the heart of Citizens Advice is a desire to help where there is need and to bring about change where there are unfair and unjust situations. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. Are you looking for a fresh challenge? Maybe you could spare a few hours a week to get involved. It's rewarding, challenging and fun working with the great team at the Wyre Forest Bureau. There are many areas you can help from reception to advising clients to admin back up. We always try to find our volunteers a role to match their skills and interests. Maybe campaigning is your thing....then you could volunteer to be part of our Social Policy team. Full training is always given. We want to continue the work we are doing: giving support, helping those with needs and maybe fighting your corner where necessary to bring about change. You could play a part in that. For more information you can contact us: Telephone: 01562 60194 Email: bureau@wyreforestcab.org.uk Or why not pop in to our offices in CAB House 21-23 New Road Kidderminster and talk to us about volunteering. Look us up on our website (www.wyreforestcab.org.uk). It could be just the thing to put a spring in your step in the next few months and we would love to have you on board.

Bella’s Blog Life In Bewdley Primary School Nursery

After a hectic Easter break filled with a glut of chocolate, swimming, Easter egg hunting and lovely sunny days, it’s back off to school for Bella and her friends. At the time of writing this the Spring Fayre is a mere two weeks away and we are looking forward to a great evening. Well done to the PTFA for yet again organising the event. There’s lots to look forward to this term; nursery and reception are planning a planting project with all the children helping to grow the toppings to go on a pizza. The children will begin the planting whilst in nursery and those moving into reception in September will get to harvest all they have grown. Such fun and a great reminder of all the exciting things they did in nursery. Bella is very keen to take in her swimming badge to show everyone what she has been up to during the holidays; the children are encouraged to talk about what they do outside of nursery. The children sit in circle time and spill the beans on lots of exciting - and sometimes embarrassing - tales from home. 47

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH MAY 2014

Dog Fouling Councillors once again discussed the perennial problem of dog fouling in the town centre. It was unpleasant and unhealthy and was off-putting to visitors but there was little evidence of action being taken against offenders some of whom may themselves be visitors to the town. The District Council was responsible for enforcement some of whose staff could issue penalty notices of £50. However, they needed to witness the act of fouling. The Town Council agreed to write to the District Council to ask that they be more assertive in issuing notices and also encourage the public to report any instances to the Worcestershire Hub either online or by phone or at the Hub offices in Load Street.

Community Public Access Defibrillator The use and number of defibrillators is growing and on numerous occasions they have made the difference in ensuring that someone survives a heart attack. Previously they could only be used by qualified staff. Now technology has enabled anyone to use them on a patient. Councillors learned of a scheme where one could be kept available for use in a redundant telephone kiosk. Their cost was £2500. The Council’s Project Officer was asked to research the viability of having one in the town centre and also the risk of it being stolen or misused. World War One Centenary Commemorations The Council were updated as to the various events that would be happening in Bewdley over the summer months as part of the World War One commemorations the 100th anniversary of which falls on 4th August.

Wribbenhall Flood Barriers The Environment Agency had produced a leaflet summarising the effectiveness of flood barriers in Bewdley since 2007. The Town Council’s view was that there should be improved barriers at Beales Corner to enable the bridge to remain open at all times. The EA confirmed that the longer term future of the present temporary barriers will be made following an ongoing review. The Council will press for an early decision to be made. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 2nd June, 7th July and 4th August. The Annual Town Council (Mayor Making) will take place on Friday 30th May at 7.00pm in the Guildhall. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 51

A Favourite Footpath

From Georgian Bewdley to the Iron Age (and back)

About 4.5 miles with some steady climbs and great views. Crosses fields and stiles and can be muddy. This path is well described in the ‘Wassell Wood Circular Walk’ (leaflet from Bewdley Tourist info or at http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/pdf/Wassell-WoodWalk.pdf). However, I’ve described it here in the anticlockwise direction because of better views ahead as you return to Bewdley Leave the centre of Bewdley. Cross the bridge and turn left and take the narrow path past the Bowling Club. Cross Northwood lane and up the steps opposite over the railway and up the narrow footpath. The summit of Wassell Wood now lies ahead. Cross the stile and down and left on Grey Green lane to the crossroads. Bear left and immediately right (past the monkey puzzle tree) and up a lane before going left through the field gate. Walk uphill diagonally across the field towards a large oak. Cross the lane past a mysteriously marooned stile and over the next stile. Take care here. Walk diagonally to the northern corner of the next field till you spot a stile in the hedge. Follow signs which take you along a field edge (can be muddy) till you reach Hoarstone Lane. Walk uphill and enter Wassell Wood (information board). Press on to the top of the hill (another good information board). These are the Iron Age earthworks. Descend westwards onto Hoarstone Lane and turn right. Lovely views west towards the Wyre Forest and Clee Hills. Up the lane to crossroads then left along Halls Farm Lane. At the end of the Lane take the right fork. Pick your way carefully through Halls Farmyard skirting to right and then left between 2 ancient barns to a metal farm gate. Go through and head downhill bearing left (south). Great views south down the Severn Valley open up with the Abberley Hills, Woodbury Hill and, on a clear day, Malverns. You now head gently downhill, going from a path to a track and then onto Crundalls Lane. Look out for the footpath on the right immediately after Woodland View house. Cross the stile, follow the field edge and cross the field downhill to a further stile then immediately right. The path runs gradually downhill over a grassy field and then under a railway arch back onto Northwood Lane. Turn left and back through the caravan park into town. Paul Warnett

June in the Forest

Coming home from Bewdley’s ‘cinema’ the other night we came across a large group of fallow deer in the woods. We stopped the car and they all followed each other across the track in front of us: 17 does in all with a white doe at the back. This was in May, when family groups of females join together with others to form larger herds. This month, however, pregnant females will be going off alone to give birth to their young. You’ve probably never seen any fawns on your walks through the forest, and that’s just as it should be. The mothers hide their fawns in a ‘nest’ of vegetation and return at intervals to suckle them. If you do happen to come across one, just leave it undisturbed so that there’s no risk of the mother being scared away. Muntjac deer have now become common in Wyre. They are rarely seen and can be mistaken for a dog, which is ironic because they make us aware of their presence by their loud, echoing barks. At Uncllys I associate the sound with cold, winter’s nights. They are native to SouthEast Asia and were brought to London Zoo and Woburn Abbey towards the end of the nineteenth century as a curiosity. The wild populations originated in escapes and deliberate releases since the 1920s.They do rather well in the woods of southern England and the efforts of the Wildlife Ranger are needed to keep their numbers under control. Otherwise they would have a very damaging effect on the woodland (and garden) flora. We were delighted to find a few fat spikes of Narrow-leaved Helleborine, a rare and beautiful white orchid, in the corner of a field on one of the forest’s smallholdings last month. Although a new location to those trying to record and protect the future of these plants, it amused me to discover that the family who lived there had been well-aware of their existence for a long time and able to direct us to more. The rarity is as much of those who look, and especially to look and have some idea what they are seeing, as of the plant itself. Maybe we were being watched, for within two days some of the flower spikes had been grazed off by a herbivore wanting some variety in its diet. Those deer again, most likely. Thanks to the publication, ‘Worcestershire’s mammals’, by Worcestershire Recorders (2012), and to Phil Rudlin, the Forestry Commission’s Wildlife Ranger, for information. Linda Iles
