April in the Forest The cacophony of birdsong on the forest edges announces that spring is here. Tomorrow morning I’ll be joining in the annual deer census so I’m hoping that the dawn will be fine and melodious to compensate me for that lost hour in a nice, warm bed.
April sees the arrival of summer migrants such as swallows, redstarts, chiffchaffs and blackcaps, and we eagerly await the evocative call of the cuckoo. This seasonal explosion of song is a way of establishing the territories in which breeding pairs will nest and find the food needed to rear their young. The nature of the territory depends on the habitat which that bird needs: some preferring heather and young birch, for instance, while others find food and nesting holes in mature oak trees. The size of the territory depends on the abundance of resources and the pressure of competition from the neighbours. To attract a good number and variety of birds there needs to be a patchwork of different habitats with the range of tree species and ages of growth present in a well-managed woodland. As Wyre has broadleaved and coniferous trees with areas of wetland, heathland, pasture, orchards and gardens all intermingled it offers a relatively attractive home for resident birds and summer visitors. As I have mentioned in these articles before, the national picture for woodland birds is far from encouraging, with an overall reduction in numbers of over 75% since 1970. The wood warblers are becoming very scarce in Wyre: they, like the chiffchaff, nest in low shrubs near the ground and are very susceptible to disturbance. Though the major factor in their decline may be the loss of their winter habitat in Africa, it still behoves us to do what we can here to conserve this delightful summer visitor.
I remember in the early days of the Discovery Centre that a pied flycatcher nested in a bird box at the back of our original forest classroom: it was a good choice as there used to be a small pond there for pond dipping and many insects would have been attracted to the water. I haven’t seen a pied flycatcher since, and again, changes in winter habitats in Africa plus climate change seem to be implicated. More bird boxes, in a variety of different situations, can only be a good thing.
And by the way, dear reader, I’ve started to finish my garden pond with pebbly, rocky and vegetated edges and hope the amphibian residents will be happy with the result as well as the human ones! Linda Iles

Two local organisations that have a big impact on the people they serve are looking for trustees. Turn to pages 21 and 39 to find out more about Citizens’ Advice and Community Transport Helpline and read about the difference that trustees can make to their valuable work. Another local organisation, Wyre Community Land Trust is launching a new project that will lead up to the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth in 2019. On page 33 read about Ruskin’s ideals and his vision for how Ruskin Land in the Wyre Forest should be used. Find out how you can become involved.

BEWDLEY BAPTIST ART GROUP PRESENT A Demonstration by Jayne Good Jayne Good is a certified instructor in the Bob Ross Wet-on-Wet Oil Painting Technique. Bob Ross wanted to bring oil painting to everyone. The Bewdley Passion 2017
Since its inception in 2013, the Bewdley Passion has become a regular event in the town’s calendar. The programme has evolved to offer different ways of reflecting on the final days in the life of Jesus, and this year is no exception.
Our 2017 Passion involves three different activities, all on Good Friday 14th April.
At 1pm. Bewdley Churches hold a united service in Jubilee Gardens to recollect the events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, each congregation telling a part of the story.
At 3pm There is an opportunity to either join a guided walk to the foot of the cross at Bewdley’s own Golgotha (approx. 2 miles round trip) or enjoy a time of quiet reflection and meditation at Riverside Elim church.
At 7.30pm Bach’s St. John Passion is performed in St. Anne’s Church led by Musical Director Alastair Elliott, with the Festival Chorus, Bewdley Baroque Orchestra and professional soloists.
The Bewdley Passion programme is an offering to the community; there is no admission charge to any of the events. All are welcome to join in celebrating this most holy of days.

The Changing Face of Load Street exhibition continues until the 7th May. We welcome any photos or memories you are inspired to share. Contributions will add to the museum archive which volunteers have been cataloguing. The town shops feature posters of the shop as it used to be. We thank the town council for its support. The children of Bewdley Methodist Church's 'Sunday Club' have adopted WaterAid as their charity for the year. As well as learning about the charity's work to provide clean water to the 663 million people worldwide who do not have safe drinking water, they have decided to raise funds to help make a difference. On Saturday 8th April they'll be setting up an Easter stall at the church on High Street, selling craft items and home-baked goodies. Diarrhoea caused by dirty water and bad sanitation is the second biggest child killer worldwide. A lack of clean water and toilets keeps girls out of school, stops women from working, and traps people in poverty. The Sunday Club children want to help change this. 19

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre
Bewdley Museum reopened its doors for the 2017 season on Saturday 4th March with entertainment from Naomi's Hotsy Totsy band who will be back on 3rd August to perform in Jubilee Gardens. The Changing Face of Load Street, presented by the Friends of Bewdley Museum, Bewdley Civic Society and Bewdley Historical Society is proving to be extremely popular with visitors. This exhibition, including photographs of the shop fronts over the past 150 years, is open until 7th May. The herb garden and the roof in the foundry remain closed due to ongoing works. They will be fully open for the Easter weekend on Saturday 15th and 16th April. Come and celebrate Easter in traditional style with an Easter Egg Hunt for children on Easter Sunday from 12.00 to 3.00pm, just ÂŁ3.00 a go around the beautiful Jubilee Gardens. An egg is guaranteed for each go! Easter Craft Activities will be on offer from Monday 10th until Friday 14th and from Monday 17th until Friday 21st April. Vacancies for Board Trustees
Covering North West Worcestershire, Community Transport Wyre Forest is a charity. We provide a door to door transport service using volunteer drivers’ own cars and our own wheelchair cars for anyone who finds it difficult to use public transport and needs access to health, shopping, social and other day to day opportunities. We run journeys to the doctors, dentists, hospitals and shops; a wide range of social gatherings or just to meet up with friends and relatives. We've seen a 50% increase in demand over the past five years and need to recruit additional Trustees to join our board. Because we are a charity, the organisation is governed by a board of Trustees who are responsible for the good governance of the organisation and for providing strategic direction. Our Chief Officer is responsible for the day to day management of the organisation and reports to the board of Trustees. The board of Trustees meets formally for two hours every two months to consider a wide range of issues including finance and fundraising, operational performance, accommodation, volunteer numbers and vehicle purchase. Additionally Trustees can take on other duties to support the organisation which are carried out between meetings to suit their particular interests. New logo for Bewdley Festival 30 This year will be the thirtieth season of Bewdley Festival and it was decided that after twenty nine years a new logo should replace the one that has served Festival so well. The original logo was designed by local artist Margaret Layton in 1988.
Several local designers were invited to submit ideas for the new logo and Becky Newbold, Director of Communication and Community at The Bewdley School, hosted the selection panel. Four submissions were given numbers so that no one knew whose designs they were. They were of a very high quality but, after scrutinising and evaluating, one design stood out and was chosen as the new logo for Bewdley Festival.
It was designed by Kat Carlyle who is based at Snuff Mill in Bewdley, producing designs for websites and more recently Digital Marketing. Kat attended Bewdley High School and was taught by Becky Newbold who, as her art teacher, was a huge influence and inspirational in helping her choose a career in graphic design. Kat went on to gain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Digital Media from the University of Worcester. She has been a member of Bewdley Rowing Club for nine years and was Club Captain from 2014 to 2016.
Kat said,“When the opportunity for designing the new logo for Bewdley Festival came along, I wanted to be involved. I love Bewdley and to be part of anything to do with the town is a great pleasure. After extensive research, I put together eleven different designs all varying in one shape or another.”
We hope this new logo designed by someone who is Bewdley through and through will last for another twenty nine seasons of Bewdley Festival!

two tonnes of danger and a wincing bill. The option of opting out of vehicular duties was removed when mummy got very poorly. I stepped up to the plate, got my provisional licence and signed up for lessons. I could make no head way in a manual car. After two lessons my instructor texted me to indefinitely suspend my tuition. My driving seemed to be having a detrimental impact on her health. We had an automatic car, and despite the greater cost for lessons to learn in an automatic, I thought it wise and indeed prudent to switch. I persevered for my family. I liked my new instructor; we chatted about football and politics as I tootled around Kidderminster. My wife adjudged me to be nearly enjoying myself and pushed for me to have more lessons and try harder. She wasn't to see me pass either my theory or my practical tests. That breaks my heart. I became a qualified driver on the 31st January 2017. I can now visit my parents; I can now take my daughter to birthday parties; and, I can now shop at Lidl. Not to my thinking essential stuff. But I did keep my promise and that's what daddies should do. Pater Unum

Clothing for Refugees.
A big thank you again to all who have donated clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, phones and money for refugees via St .Anne's Church. Everything you give helps refugees in transit camps in north Europe, Greece, Syria and beyond. Nothing is wasted. We send to local charity People in Motion (PIM) who in turn send the aid by container or van to the areas of need. We still need donations of clean warm clothes - evenings are still cold - and summer clothes for men, women and children, shoes, sleeping bags, complete tents, blankets of all kinds or whatever aid you can muster. Some camps are running short of food so tea bags, tinned fish, tinned tomatoes, kidney beans, chick peas, oil, vegetable stock cubes, spices, biscuits are most welcome, but no tinned meat. Please check for updates of donations required on PIM's Facebook page - RefugeeSolidarity-Herefordshire/Worcestershire. There will be collections at The Undercroft, St. George's Hall, from 1st April, and at The Boar's Head, Worcester St, Kidderminster (opposite Dunelm). My First Job: Mary Lovell

In 1955 when I left school at 15, I joined a large mainly engineering company in South Yorkshire called Newton Chambers. Every year the company took on a double complement of girls so that we all had half a day at their Business Training College and half working in their various offices.
The company had been in the forefront of the Industrial Revolution starting with an ironworks in 1793 making any thing from cannon balls to larger things such as boilers and bridge ironwork. Even though covered by industry, the valley was still a pleasant place. On one of the buildings standing proud on the roof were huge metal letters cast in the company's foundry saying HELPFUL TRUTHFUL EFFICIENT. This was the mantra for all to follow.
In Victorian times the byproducts of the coal were used to make disinfectant. This went by the name of IZAL which was named after the director's daughter with a little alteration as her name was Lisa! During WW11 the Churchill tanks were produced there and luckily never found by German bombers. By the time I worked there this division was producing excavators.
One of our visits in the first month was to a large building which housed a computer - it filled the whole building and we were told it was only the sixth computer to be installed in Britain. It calculated the wages and that was all. At the time we were amazed by it.
My working half days were in the HQ dispatch office and I spent a lot of time running up and down a marble staircase collecting mail. One unusual job I had was weighing our rival's toilet rolls which the reps sent in. As I progressed I was moved to the Secretary of the company's dept. One of my jobs was putting cheques through a machine to emboss the amount. I well remember doing the cheques for the reps’ Jaguar cars which I think used to cost £999.
Once there was a cheque for over a million which my little machine couldn’t cope with. I used to type the menu for the directors’ dining room which was very posh. We ate in humbler surroundings but all trainees were issued with passes for the canteens which meant we ate well for a few pence.
Our half day at college included visits to the gym and the extensive playing fields where we played mostly netball. In the summer a large marquee was the venue for us all to receive our certificates from the Managing Director followed by tea and then a cricket match between the girls and boys I played once but the girls never won.
Circumstances meant I left and moved south but I have fond memories of my very happy introduction to the world of work. I joined the Westminster Bank in Tunbridge Wells and eventually married one of our customers !

April Thoughts
There's a lot of talk about how we should step away from all our gadgetry and be more in tune with nature and the world around us. With this in mind I researched the month of April (on the internet, ironically) and came up with the following*:Apparently the word 'April' is derived from the Greek word for 'opening' and in the Celtic tradition is connected with the rebirth of the soul; clear correspondences for us in the awakening of the earth and the growth of flowers and wildlife. An English folklore saying goes "April weather/Rain and Sunshine both together." It's difficult to argue with that one. I set about relating this information to libraries and reading. I suppose you could liken a library to a greenhouse for the mind: you choose your seeds (books); plant them in your mind by reading; cultivate and nourish the ideas and emotions that you like/need; and then bear a variety of fruit. It could be an expanded mind, increased vocabulary, a new way of thinking or behavingâ&#x20AC;Śor simply the enjoyment of a good read. Few books contain unrelenting misery (rain), or all joy and light (sunshine) so reading gives us 'rain and sunshine both together'. Bewdley Carnival 10th June
This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bewdley Carnival has many fantastic acts and side shows booked to ensure that a great day will be had by all the family. The main act for 2017 is Dangerous Steve, one of the most experienced outdoor attractions on the circuit. Steve started presenting his motorbike stunt show when he was just six and is a real crowd pleaser with his Fire and Chainsaw juggling act. Also booked are The Bliss Gate Dog Training Display Team, HCW Wrestling, Glamba/Samba Percussions Group, Severnside School of Dancing, Simon Airey Animal Man, a wood carver, West Midlands Tae Kwon Do, a Fun Fair, Bouncy Castles, Bucking Bronco and many stalls. The princesses to lead the Carnival Procession on its way to the field will be picked from the two Bewdley Junior Schools and their dresses will be sponsored this year by The Mug House, Bewdley. If any other businesses would like to sponsor an event or help in any way, we would be most grateful. Ruskin Land in the Wyre Forest
An exciting new project is about to begin: explore Ruskin Land, the area of the Wyre Forest owned by Ruskin’s Guild of St George, and managed by the Wyre Community Land Trust. The two year programme begins this summer and runs until the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth in 2019. Ruskin Land was given to the Victorian polymath John Ruskin in 1877. He had the vision ‘to take some small piece of English ground, beautiful, peaceful and fruitful’ and so provide opportunities for working people to cultivate land and reconnect with nature. Our project is all about exploring the story of what happened here, how his ideas have become incorporated into the modern forest, and what we can do to reinterpret his vision today in meaningful, creative and productive ways. The project aims to link the local community to the forest through a range of events and activities. A large component will be about making. There will be opportunities for local people to engage through shared memories, led walks and working with an artisan in residence who will be appointed to turn our oak into beautiful things. The £80,000 project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Ruskin’s Guild of St George, which owns the 150 acres of farm and woodland, in partnership with the Wyre Community Land Trust at St George’s Farm. The project will employ a part-time Coordinator to work flexibly over the next two years for an average of 3 days per month. Behind the Baton
I’d like to start by reflecting back on the great evening we had for the “Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year” competition. An enthusiastic audience was treated to some great performances and the Judging panel had a very difficult choice to pick a winner. Eventually we settled on the Duo “Mayfli” as our overall winners with Phoebe Jones as the best singer, Danny Bold gaining the Instrumental Prize and Izzy O’Dowd’s heartfelt song taking the composition prize. What impressed me most about all these young musicians was their professionalism and their desire to work hard and take on board all the advice they get. Whilst the judging team went into a huddle to make the tough decisions, the audience were entertained by the outgoing winner, Elisha Green who handles herself like a professional with 20 years’ experience. Some of our winners were able to further their performance experience a couple of weeks later, performing with the local jazz group “Matahari” as the warm up for another great Music in the Hall night featuring the phenomenal Gypsy Jazz guitar of “The Remi Harris Project” – if you haven’t seen these guys yet, make sure you look out for their next gig – they are quite extraordinary. These monthly Friday “Music in the Hall” nights are getting bigger and better – regularly now selling out, so if you want to go next time, move fast to get your tickets! Changing genre slightly – my main focus between now and Easter will be preparation for a performance of J.S Bach’s St. John Passion as part of the Bewdley Passion programme on Good Friday. It is a beautiful work recounting events leading up to and including the crucifixion of Christ. I can imagine that many people could be put off by the thought of 100 minutes of serious classical music, but we will be doing everything we can to make this wonderful work accessible including singing in English (rather than the original German) to ensure the listener can follow the story. There is actually quite a theatrical feel to much of the work which gives it an almost operatic style at times. This will not be a “highbrow” elitist performance – our intention is to use Bach’s brilliant music as he himself intended, to tell the Easter story. I do hope to see many of you there. Citizens Advice seeks new trustees
Citizens Advice Wyre Forest is a charity created to serve the local community. Established in 1963 in Kidderminster, it provides advice and information on a wide range of subjects including debt, benefits, housing and employment. It deals with over 5,000 clients a year and has a staff of 40 employees and volunteers. We now need to recruit new skilled trustees to join our board and are looking for people with strategic vision, independent judgement and a willingness to give time and commitment to the role. We are particularly looking for people with marketing and funding skills. The post of trustee is unpaid but will provide you a great deal of experience and satisfaction. All reasonable expenses are reimbursed. We are particularly keen to achieve a more diverse board of trustees and welcome applications from all sections of the community. News from Rotary Club of Bewdley
The Rotary Club of Bewdley presented the Rotary Young Photographer Awards at The Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre in February. More than eighty learners submitted three photographs on this year’s theme of "Reflection". The section winners’ photographs now go to the District final. Colin Hill’s photograph shows Cameron Reaves and Kitty Proctor, Senior winner and runner up, and Intermediate winner Sam Annis with their certificates. Button Oak Fete 2017 Unfortunately, for a number of reasons including the unavailability of some key organisers, we are not able to hold the August fete this year. The good news is that we are going to continue to do as much fund raising as possible throughout the year including our usual raffle, greatly supported in the past by local businesses, and a Charity Golf Day at the Bewdley Pines Golf Club. Despite lower attendances at the 2016 Fete, the money raised on the day combined with the proceeds from the 2016 raffle enabled us to present cheques to fourteen well deserving causes in October. Thirty for 30 - Thirty Years of Bewdley Festival
Bewdley Festival 2017 Friday 6th October to Sunday 15th October
Celebrating 30 years of Bewdley Festival has already begun with our “Thirty for 30” initiative which sees ten additional events organised across the year to supplement the usual twenty events of Festival proper in October.
Max Keen will be at St. George’s Hall with two more of his popular history lectures: Saturday 1st April brings us the History of Dudley Castle and Saturday 15th July the story of Sir Francis Drake – both performed as only Max can. St. George’s Hall’s cinema features another in the popular series of Exhibition on Screen arts films, taking us on a trip on Tuesday 9th May to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia to explore the works of Renoir. An evening presentation entitled “The History of Jazz” is planned for Friday 21st April with Geoff Goodwin’s Chosen Few. The Festival’s opening night on Friday 6th October sees a great act returning after 30 years. Having appeared with fellow Liverpool poet Brian Patten at the first ever Bewdley Festival in1988, Roger McGough is back with a great show performing alongside LiTTLe MACHiNe and featuring a fine selection of vintage, classic and surprising poems set to music.
2017 is a milestone year for Roger McGough and sees the 50th anniversary of the iconic Penguin Modern Poets No.10 - The Mersey Sound; the republishing of the 1967 epic poem of love and lust, broken promises and unfettered dreams, Summer With Monika and the publication of his New and Selected Poems to mark his 80th birthday. We shall be delighted to welcome him to Bewdley once again.

Bewdley Bridge Club provides a friendly environment to play duplicate bridge. We are committed to helping people enjoy club bridge at every level and meet on Wednesday evenings from 7.00 until 10.00 at the Elizabeth Mills Centre in Stourport-on-Severn.
From April 19th 2017, we shall be running an “intermediate section” for those who have played the game before, even if some time ago. This section will play at a relaxed pace with experienced members acting as mentors. We would also be able to offer a coaching session if needed in order to highlight the difference between playing “duplicate” bridge and social “rubber” bridge. As a further aid to learning this fascinating game, you will find weekly commentaries on the hands written by experienced players on the club website http://www.bridgewebs.com/bewdley/.
Affiliated to the English Bridge Union (EBU), the club is the largest in Wyre Forest. We use pre-dealt hands and a modern electronic scoring system enabling results to be available immediately after play. Our accredited EBU teacher has been running classes for beginners for the last 5 years. The next beginner class starts in September 2017.

Community Showcase Event Saturday 8th April 2017 will see St George’s Hall host a Community Showcase organised by the Town Council.
