The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk
Welcome to June’s edition of The Bridge. Recently members of a Bewdley Facebook group have been sharing what they particularly value about living or working in our town. High on my list is Bewdley Museum and all it has to offer throughout the season. This month’s magazine is full of news of events and activities taking place there in the coming weeks. There’s barely enough space to fit it all in, but page 11 gives a flavour of what’s going on in June. Find out about talks and tours, children’s activities and theatre, exhibitions and special projects. The exhibition about the fight against polio hosted by the Rotary Club of Bewdley continues in the museum’s Wyre Forest Gallery. Learn how this devastating disease is soon to be completely eradicated. More details on page 29. At a time when individually crafted objects are appreciated in a world of mass production, the group of resident craftspeople working in the Shambles invites you to an Open Evening. Find out more about the ‘Made in the Museum Bewdley’ event on page 27. Of course, June brings us Bewdley Carnival. The Princesses are preparing for their special day leading the parade through town. Turn to the centre colour pages to meet the lucky girls chosen for this honour. More details of the carnival are on page 23. Elsewhere in the magazine we meet Owen Raybould who is keen to share his insights into healthy living in the 21st century by learning from the past. Read how he became a forager on page 17 and find out how you can discover more about the food you eat. On page 31 read about Bewdley’s very own music festival, now in its seventh year and bigger and better than ever. Hopfest gives local young talent a chance to share a platform with more established acts. Who knows what glittering careers may be beginning. And turn to page 37 to find out how Heather Flack’s day was brightened when she walked past the Old Grammar School in High Street. Let us know what little bouquets brighten your day, whether of the flowery sort or otherwise. Gill

Pleased to meet you: Owen Raybould
Before I developed my interest in all things Nature I used to be a Housing Officer - a job about as far away from working among growing things in the countryside as you can imagine. My interest in learning how and what we can eat straight from the field and hedgerow started by impressing my friends as a teenager by picking and eating wild garlic leaves. The more I learned about foraging the more I wanted to know, so I attended various courses including one I found particularly important at Bristol. Soon I was finding that I knew rather more than other like-minded people and just slipped into a teaching role. This developed over time until five years ago I decided to leave my housing job and devote myself to education on the important subject of health and diet.
It sometimes surprises me how little many people seem to know about the food they buy and eat. With Worcester University and MIND the mental health charity, I am now working on helping people to understand how to improve their diet and thus their health. It is a subject close to my heart and. so far, it seems quite a few people agree with me on its importance.
Healthy Living in the 21st Century: Owen is running a course at the Ruskin Studio, Uncllys Farm on both Sunday 4th and Sunday 18th June from 2.00pm until 6.00pm. For details and to book, contact him on owenraybould@hotmail.com or 07525 261683

Bewdley film blogger Beth Mohan... ...got a pleasant surprise at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall recently when her film blog was
endorsed by renowned film critic Mark Kermode. At an April concert of music from ‘British Blockbusters’ hosted by Mark, she took the opportunity to chat to him at the interval. Beth was both shocked and delighted when Mark started the second half of the concert by telling the audience of over 2000 people how much he had enjoyed meeting Beth. He showed the audience her card and read out her web address. He was incredibly encouraging and told me to ‘keep up the good work’. Beth has volunteered at Cinema in the Hall since it started and is an enthusiastic member of the Tuesday night film club. Beth blogs at www.bethsfilmreview.com 17

Chidren’s books at Bewdley Library
Those of you with young children may be familiar with the Bookstart Packs containing books and library services information which were supplied to babies and pre-school children at birth.
As from 1st April this year all parents, on registering their child at any Registry Office in the County, will receive a Golden Ticket and an information pack about the Bookstart resources available. The Golden Ticket can be taken into the family's local library and swapped for the first Bookstart Baby bag which contains board books, a rhyme wall chart and a booklet explaining the importance of books for babies; the family can also join the library to take advantage of all library services on offer.
Sharing books and rhymes with children is an important foundation for language development, which is in turn an essential foundation for future reading. If they enjoy the initial stages, the chances are children will be more confident and competent readers later on. Talking of which, don't forget that our annual Summer Reading Challenge for children aged 4-12 years will be starting from 24th June. This enables children to keep up with their reading during the summer holiday in an unpressured and non-prescriptive way, with incentives throughout. Keep an eye out for details, or pop in and see us! Summer's on the way….

May Day FunD Day success
The Friends of Riverside North Park hosted a family FunD Day in May to raise funds to help maintain and improve facilities at this popular park.
Despite a wet start to the day the group were thrilled by the number of people who turned out to support the event which had something for all the family. The day raised a fantastic ÂŁ1,089.60.
Prior to the FunD Day pupils at Bewdley and St Anne's Primary Schools were invited to take part in a competition to name the gnome which has now taken up permanent residence at the park. All entries were on display on the day and winners Fiona Maddams and Nancy Babb named the new edition to the park "Mr Gnorman Parker".

Bewdley Museum Volunteers
The museum is now in full swing, with lots of events planned for the coming months. All of the areas affected by the refurbishment have re-opened, and our volunteer teams are back in action ensuring visitors have an enjoyable experience.
If you are disappointed during your visit to find the air raid shelter closed, or no-one available in the clay pipes and brass rubbings area to demonstrate, why not consider joining the team, so that we can showcase these activities more often? There really is no fixed time commitment, and extra pairs of hands are especially welcome during busy times, on weekends, school holidays and bank holidays.
National Volunteers Week takes place from the 1st to 7th June this year, and we will be actively spreading the word in the museum during the week, culminating in a get together for existing and potential volunteers. You are invited to join us in The Saw Yard on Thursday 8th June from 10.30am to 12.30 to find out more about the wonderful work undertaken by our volunteers, to learn about new volunteering roles, for an update of museum activities, and to enjoy some light refreshment.
I am especially keen to hear from school leavers looking for something to do in the holidays once you have recovered from the stress of exams and the excitement of finishing school.
If you would like to get in touch with me directly or are intending to join us on the 8th, I can be reached on janet@bewdleymuseum.org.uk.

Shopping
Good shopping requires patience. I have patience, but not for shopping. Food shopping is tolerable. Clothes shopping is awful. Shoes shopping is frustrating. And having to get something big like a washing machine or a fridge
is fraught with peril. I am now both breadwinner and shopper for our family of two. Getting the bread consumes my energy and concentration and I'm left with little vigour for discerning purchasing. My daughter and I dashed down to Sainsbury's in Kiddy during the Half Term. I was keen to quickly get blouses, cardigans and boots for my little princess and to get out of there. We soon sourced blouses and cardigans, and then found the boots section. My daughter tried on a couple of boots on her left foot before we found a good fit and acceptable style. All done, or so I thought. At the self-service till the total was £20.70 rather than the expected £40 plus. Worried we were getting away with something, I grabbed our purchases (of course we forgot to bring our own bag) and made a bee line for the exit. Only later did my mum inform me that I had bought boots that were two different sizes. One 12 and one 13. I foolishly hadn't taken the receipt. I was left with egg on my face. Another shopping fail. My mum is made of sterner stuff: she took the boots back to the shop and returned with two sized 12 boots. Lesson duly noted. Pater Unum

Portmeirion to Bewdley?
Community News
The archives in Bewdley museum occasionally reveal undiscovered treasures. Drawn in colour on tracing paper, a plan to redesign parts of Bewdley has come to light. They were drawn in 1944 by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, well known for his Italianate village in North Wales. There are so many questions which spring to mind: why in wartime was a small town in Worcestershire the focus of such a famous architect? If you have any information about this or would like to research these documents please get in touch with the Friends of Bewdley Museum, chair@bewdleymuseum.org.uk.

Hopfest Family Music Festival Friday 16th and Saturday 17th June
Bewdley’s own music festival is celebrating its seventh consecutive year this June at Hopleys Camping site on Cleobury Road.
Hopfest has grown year on year and now has four stages on Saturday featuring live music, spoken word performances, workshops and children’s activities from midday to midnight and live music in the main marquee from 6:00 pm until midnight on Friday evening. The festival has a fancy dress theme every year and this year it’s “The Sixties – The Summer of Love Revisited” to mark the 50th anniversary of The Summer of Love, the release of Sgt. Pepper and other notable musical landmarks. From the first event in 2011, Hopfest has showcased the remarkable wealth of talent that exists in the local area and continues to provide opportunities for young musicians to perform on the same stages as more established acts.
Last year through Bewdley Youth Festival more than eighty young people from Wyre Forest and across Worcestershire performed at the festival.
This year will be no exception and the line-up includes tremendous acts such as Sunjay, Arcadia Roots, the return of the Mothership and a special Beatles feature; The Magical History Tour, as well as a collaboration between the local jazz group Matahari and Bewdley School featuring some very talented young musicians and singers. The food area features great local cooking from Sticky Figs, The Hop Pole and Loco Lobo Tex Mex.
Activities for children include Helter Skelter with circus workshops, creative sessions with Clik Clik Collective and art and readings in the Chill Out tent organised by Betti Moretti.
Tickets are cheaper in advance and can be bought on line from www.hopfest.co.uk or from the Camp Site reception. The Friday night is free to ticket holders or £5 per person if you only are attending that event. So Kaftans, Beads, Bells and Flares at the ready!

Wyre Woodworks at Wyre Community Land Trust
Our Wyre woodworks volunteer team at Wyre Community Land Trust (WCLT) has been working hard to build and construct a community workshop at our base in the beautiful surroundings of the Wyre forest. Our volunteers have used their skills to renovate what was once a rundown barn and build a workshop within it. The workshop is being built with the help of a generous and well received grant from Bewdley Town Council.
Once the workshop is up and running our volunteer team will be working to turn sustainably harvested oak from the Wyre forest into useful and practical products. Our volunteers have made a beautiful, wheelchair accessible, oak picnic bench which they installed at Shropshire Hills Discovery centre. Volunteers will use the workshop to make a range of other products including notice boards, gates and bird boxes.
We are looking for new members to join our Wednesday Wyre woodworks volunteer team. This would involve one day per week of your time and will provide an opportunity to work in a supervised environment, learning new skills or utilising those you already have, making new friends and enjoying good company. If you have recently retired or have time available and enjoy practical work both inside and outside we would like to talk to you.
If you are interested in becoming part of our Wyre woodworks volunteer team then please get in touch by emailing kate@wyreclt.org.uk or call 01299 488083. We also have other volunteer opportunities available including work experience placements for those looking to start a career in conservation.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café linked with BBC 2 TV series
A recent BBC 2 Television series the “Repair Shop” is expected to increase interest in bringing items for repair to the Bewdley Repair Café. The series, designed to be an antidote to the throwaway culture featured a number of professional and specialist repairers and restorers bringing back to life a range of cherished items ranging from accordions to cuckoo clocks and furniture.
We were contacted in advance by the production company that made the “Repair Shop” series to pass on a request to our volunteers and customers for items of sentimental value that were in need of restoration. We don’t know if any Bewdley folk contacted the programme but it was a fascinating series and undoubtedly will stimulate interest in retrieving forgotten items from attics and the rear of cupboards and bringing them along to Repair Cafes to see if they can be repaired.
Our repairers are all volunteers and happy to tackle general repairs ranging from kitchen appliances to garden tools and clocks and small pieces of furniture. We have already had our share of items that are of sentimental value to the owners including clocks and antique dolls. It is very satisfying to save an item from being thrown away and sent to land-fill but all the more rewarding if the item is of sentimental value to the customer.
The next Bewdley Repair Café is on Saturday 22nd July from 10.0 – 2.00 at St. George’s Hall in Bewdley. They are held on the third Saturday of each month. (No Repair Café in June as St. George’s Hall is unavailable or in August as many of our volunteers will be away.)
Bewdley Repairers have also helped start the Transition Kidderminster Repair Café which is held on the first Saturday of each month at Kidderminster Youth House. For further information contact: John Rhymer 01299 403424
Little Bouquets to Brighten your Days
I have been for a walk this morning and as I came back into Bewdley, I saw some flowers on the railings outside the Old Grammar School. On closer inspection, I saw they were a response to "National Flower Arranging Day". They were put there to brighten up people's lives and they certainly brightened up mine!
Well done to 1st Wribbenhall Guides.

Wyre Forest Dial-A-Ride
On 1st December 1986 Wyre Forest’s first community transport charity started providing transport to the residents of the Wyre Forest area five and a half days a week. Growing steadily over the last thirty years, Dial-A-Ride is a ‘not for profit’ Charitable Company. It now operates five minibuses on Dial-A-Ride duties five days a week, with another vehicle operating two bus routes and a Council social contract using a vehicle it leases from Worcestershire County Council.
Because of Government regulations, people who wish to use the company register as a member for a small annual fee. Not for profit groups can also register as corporate members for days out and other occasions. The charity operates throughout the Wyre Forest area and its neighbourhood.
Nigel Caldicott, the charity’s Manager, explains who is eligible to use the service. “We are a disability organisation and state on our buses that we provide door to door transport for the disabled of all ages who have difficulty using public transport. However, the term disability is wide ranging. It can be a very visible disability which requires the use of a wheelchair or walking frame, but disabilities can also be hidden. People who have had a bad experience travelling on public transport, making them nervous to do so again are also disabled. Infirmity caused by old age, making it difficult to get about, is also a disability. We always look at each new application on its merits and sympathetically.”
Dial-A-Ride also serves the wider community, very successfully providing the park and ride transport to and from the Bewdley Christmas lights festival for the last two years and the many outings for Nursing homes and our social group members throughout the year.
If you would like to find out more about how Wyre Forest Dial a ride could help you, phone 01562 755084, email info@WFDaR.uk com or the Wyre Forest Dial A Ride Web page on www.WFDaR.org.uk where you can watch our video provided for us by one of our sponsorsThe DRP Group.

He will appear alongside LiTTLe MACHiNe in a great show featuring a selection of vintage, classic and surprising poems set to music. “It’s poetry - but not like you’ve heard or seen before. Music that moves the feet for words that move the soul.” And for a finale, be prepared to join in with a rousing version of Lily The Pink! Please note that this show is for Adults and 14+.
Friday October 13th sees a visit to Bewdley by Tom Robinson as part of a short and exclusive 2-4-6-8 Motorway 40th Anniversary Tour featuring the classic four piece band lineup of Tom Robinson bass and lead vocals with Andy Treacey drums, Adam Phillips electric guitar, vocals, and keyboard virtuoso Jim Simmons.
Tickets for each show are £20 and available from www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk. In addition some tickets are available in person from Bewdley’s Tourist Information Centre.
Safe Place Scheme
The Safe Place Scheme gives vulnerable people a short term “Safe Place” to go if they have a problem, feel threatened or worried when out and about in Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn and Bewdley town centres.
All shops, businesses and public buildings which are a safe place will have a “Safe Place” sticker displayed and trained staff members who are able to give reassurance and help people contact the appropriate support.
There is a free Safe Place Scheme App available for your mobile phone. Download “My Town Worcestershire” from the App Store which will show you your nearest “Safe Place” and guide you to it through Google Maps. If you want to find out more visit our website www.nwcsp.org 51

Bewdley Town Council News June
Twice Monthly Markets The Bewdley Riverside Market returned with a fanfare in April with TWO markets per month on the riverside and in Load Street. The market runs on the first AND third Sunday in the month! So save your pennies and come and see the NEW LOOK market if you haven’t been yet! More information - community@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Bewdley Events As the summer holidays approach, the town’s events calendar is packed with exciting events for all the family. The Town Council are involved in a number of these events including the annual carnival firework display, Hopfest and other new events and markets. The Christmas Lights Switch On will soon be upon us too, and the Town Council are asking people for their ideas about the event and how it could be improved. Please e-mail any constructive thoughts to community@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Community Showcase The 8th April saw the launch of our annual Community Showcase event which was attended by over 30 community organisations. Many thanks go to St George’s Hall for hosting the event. The feedback from organisations and visitors was very positive and the Council have decided to make the event an annual one to allow local groups to showcase what they offer and recruit new volunteers. New Town Leaflet and Map The Town Council have produced a new town visitor leaflet and map which is available from the Tourist Information Centre and will be distributed across the County. This new full colour map has been designed to be a little bit quirky and unique, moving away from a traditional street map.You can also download a copy at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org on the Visiting Bewdley pages.
Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 5th June and 3rd July 2017.
Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

June in the Forest
Swallows seem to have arrived early this year, the first being spotted on March 31st. I hope to see swifts too: a bigger bird with long, swept back wings suitable for a bird that spends nearly all its life on the wing. Their screaming calls will always evoke summer for me, and earn them the local name ‘Jacky squealers’. They like to nest in old buildings, if they can find any these days that aren’t renovated and wildlife-proof. I’ve heard that a group of people in Cleobury Mortimer are making efforts to protect and encourage swifts in and around the town. Members of the national Swifts Local Network, they share information on sightings and swift conservation, for instance by offering design advice for architects and builders or instructions for building wooden swift boxes to attach to houses. They also give advice to anyone finding birds grounded.
Thank goodness for people like these who really care about the natural world. Official policies and designations can only do so much, and the efforts of those who notice and do what’s needed to save the wild and beautiful things around us from destruction are so important.
One such is Hannah from Bewdley, who feeds up underweight hedgehogs so that they survive through the winter. This spring she has been finding homes for her protegees around the Lakes estate. Their needs are fairly simple: some untidy bits of garden in which to forage for invertebrates, ways through the garden boundaries so that they can find enough food and meet a mate, and a bit of consideration so that they don’t end their lives on the end of a garden fork, in a bonfire or at the end of a strimmer. Have a look at www.hedgehogstreet.org for lots of information on what you can do in ‘your patch’ to help them and also www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/ mar/01/hedgehog-apocalypse-extinction-britain-favourite-mammal for a discussion about the complex reasons for their decline.
We belong to an increasingly urban society and need opportunities to get out of our built environment and into the countryside. Open Farm Sunday is on 11th June: an occasion when we will welcome people to participate in guided walks around Uncllys Farm (signed from The Hop Pole) and its surrounding woodland at 10am and 2pm. There will be activities for children along the way and a chance to buy some tea and cake (and maybe some home-reared beef and apple juice) afterwards. The walk will last about two hours and you will need to be ready for uneven and possibly muddy terrain. I’m afraid you won’t be able to bring your dog.
