The BRIDGE July 2011

Editorial

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley.

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month. July – the real beginning of the summer, with its promise of barbecue weather, alfresco living and The Summer Holiday. In my youth that was the one and only holiday we kids could expect; every year the family car was loaded up with tents and primus stove and we did intrepid things in the highlands of rainy, midge-infested Scotland for a fortnight. Nowadays we expect rather more in the way of luxury and certainly more than one trip away from home.

Well, I do anyway. This June I took a week’s trip to the Scilly Isles. Lest you think I neglected my duty towards the magazine, I took advantage of a couple’s confession that they lived further upriver in Shrewsbury to ask them to write something for the magazine. They didn’t, but did send a paparazzi shot of your editor pretending not to be seasick.

Why not send some Thoughts From Abroad to the Bridge? It would be fun to hear what our townspeople do while they’re away. And to all of you who are going to be here during the summer, let’s remember there are plenty of people who choose to come to us for their holiday. (Lucky us; we don’t have to go home after a fortnight! )

We have plenty to keep us amused during the month. There are details inside so with the hope that the weather treats us kindly, I wish you all a happy July.

John Ruskin Exhibition at Bewdley Museum

- Bar available

All proceeds to Holy Family Extension Appeal

Art enthusiasts will have the rare opportunity to view work from John Ruskin’s personal art collection at Bewdley Museum this summer.

The exhibition can be viewed daily in the museum’s Wyre Forest Gallery between 10am and 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) from Saturday 2nd July to Sunday 7th August.

A group of 40 objects including watercolours, drawings, prints and books are on loan from the Collection of the Guild of St George, which is housed and maintained by Museums Sheffield.

Ruskin was an influential Victorian writer and art critic who championed artists such as William Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites. In the 1880s, he intended to move part of the collection to Bewdley and had plans drawn up for a museum. The project never came about because of a lack of funding and Ruskin’s declining health.

Ruskin founded the Guild of St George in 1871 to help create a better world. His aims were to turn wasteland into food-producing plots, to protect wildlife, to educate all people in schools and to open public libraries and galleries as a ‘national store’ for all people. His vision continues today through the activities, properties and woodland that the Guild owns in Bewdley – Uncllys Farm and Ruskinland. Workshops based on Ruskin’s teachings on nature and architecture will be held at the museum on 16th July and 23rd July. For more information visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk or telephone the museum office on 01299 403573.

New course on pig keeping for existing and potential small holders

Community News

For people who want to look into owning a small holding or those who want to gain more experience, a new series of courses is available. The next course is an introduction to pig keeping on the 29th July at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. The course is free and subsidised by the Grow with Wyre Lottery Project and there is only a £10 booking fee.

The course is being run by Mark Cleaver, a local farm manager who has extensive experience in managing livestock and nature conservation. “This course is ideal for anyone who would like to find out more about looking after and checking livestock” said Mark. “Pigs are an excellent way to start as they do not need a large amount of space and they are easy to look after. All our courses includes information on the legal and moral duties of livestock keepers, codes of practice, key welfare issues and practical ways to monitor animal health.”

Wyre Community Land Trust is based at a working farm and supports land owners, small holders and farmers through training, practical help and the loan of tools and equipment. It provides a wide range of accredited courses available for both land owners and volunteers which are subsidised, mainly through the Heritage Lottery Fund. These include sustainable woodland management, livestock welfare, fruit pressing and cider making. Full details are available from Mark on 01299 488083 email mark@wyreclt.org.uk

They would also like to thank all who supported and took part in the event. Chris Hart President

…to take part in a summer reading challenge.

Yes that's right; this year we are running an adult summer reading challenge alongside our usual children's one. All you have to do is read six books over the summer period.

They don't have to be the thick, self improving sort – they can even be books you think you might enjoy – and at Bewdley Library you can win a signed book if you're the first adult to complete.

This summer's children's challenge has a Circus theme. If you're here signing the kids up for their reading challenge, why not sign yourself up as well?

The usual conditions apply; you can count two books per visit towards your total.

In addition to winning a signed book, the first adult and child to complete will also be entered into a countywide draw with the chance to win another prize.

Let's have the library buzzing over the summer! Kay Sanderson

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Hi everybody. I expect you’re wondering where I’ve been. Well, actually I’ve been over at the Bridge magazine headquarters having a brisk word with that incompetent editor. Do you know, she had the cheek to lose my last two articles? And after all the trouble I went to, borrowing my humans’ dictionary to put some really long words into my articles? I’m glad to say that after sobbing for several hours she promised to do better and give me a prime site in the next edition and buy me a big tin of my favourite food. So anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the recent sunny weather. I’ve had a relaxing break from my daily patrol around the practice and have used my time to catch up on several cat naps and many cuddles with my humans. Some of you may remember that I wrote last spring about some ducklings from a nest in a neighbouring garden that were helped to the river by my humans. This year our mother duck came back to the same spot again and managed to produce even more offspring than last year – 14 to be exact! Our neighbours at the practice kindly let us know when the ducklings were ready to leave the nest and I was able to observe them as they crossed the road and floated down to the river. My humans here were very excited recently as one of our vets Ruth got married at the end of May. Being a cat I was not able to attend, but I am looking forward to seeing all the photos. As I am a highly educated cat I plan to offer my considered opinion once I have had a little snooze. More from me again next month as I think I’ve sorted out the editor, Gavin

Looking for a Saturday morning club in Bewdley for your primary school aged children? Super Saturday provides a mixture of fun, activities and some bible based teaching suitable for children aged 5 to 11 years of age. When? On the second Saturday of the month (next is the 9th July).

Music in the Park evening before the Carnival

Cost? This is an entirely free event. Where Bewdley Baptist Church, High Street, Bewdley Time 9:30 to 11:30 Why? The church has been running Who Let The Dads Out which has proven to be very popular with everyone who comes. This is for Dads and their pre-school children. However, many of the parents who come also have primary aged children and the church thought it would be good for them to have their own club to go to. This is why they introduced Super Saturday for these older children. Parents can drop off their older children at Super Saturday and then either go and enjoy Who Let The Dads Out or call back at 11:30. Like to know more? Gardening in July

As I prepare July’s notes Radio 4 announces the West Midlands is just outside the Drought Area, so in an effort to encourage some rain, here are some tips on conserving plants and water. If it’s not too late dig organic matter into your soil before planting; for deep-rooted crops add paper and shredded carpet to the bottom of trenches. On the top of the soil add a good layer of mulch to keep weeds at bay and retain water, placing pebbles or stones on troughs, hanging baskets or beds will also help. Line containers to stop water running through to waste and keep in the shade when possible to reduce rapid evaporation. Choosing plants for drought conditions is still an option as bedding plants wilt; English lavender, geraniums, herbs and shrubs will thrive better in dry conditions. Collecting water for use can be easily achieved with water butts, apparently there is enough rainfall in even the driest areas to fill 150 butts from an average household roof. That should be enough to get everyone through the driest 6 weeks of summer. Water from the house can be recycled onto plants, washing up water, bath water and water drawn off before the hot tap runs hot can be used. Grey water is better for plants than vegetable crops in order to avoid infections. Grey water from washing machines, dish washers, tumble driers etc. should be avoided as they may degrade soil quality over time because of their chemical composition, similarly avoid water with bleaches. Watering is best done late in the evening when there is less evaporation, water well but less frequently, use water absorbing gels in containers, screen plants to keep them shaded and break up wind and finally don’t cut the lawn too often, once a fortnight and with the cutters raised is enough in a drought.

Chickens and Beans at The Hop Pole Allotment

It's been two months since the last item about establishing an allotment at The Hop Pole. Lack of rain Since then, like many other gardens, the allotment has suffered from the lack of rain and the strong drying winds which have scorched some of the newly planted vegetables. The climbing beans and sweet peas in particular have struggled but the first sweet pea flower buds are now showing. The local pigeons have also left their mark, swooping in and almost clearing young kale, broccoli, cabbage and beetroot plants. Some of the plants have responded to a rescue package of watering and a protection of netting and twiggy branches but the eventual harvest will be smaller than expected. However, we are not far off harvesting the broad beans and peas and there have been constant cuttings of cut and come again salad greens and pea shoots grown in containers. Our New Additions A new addition has been the flock of six rescued battery hens. They were a sorry sight when they arrived just over a month ago. Their combs were floppy and pale and they had very few feathers as a consequence ROCK PATHFINDERS

of being kept in tiny battery hen cages. But within 48 hours they began to pick up and were enjoying being outside for the first time in their lives. Although one hen didn't survive the transition to free range living it has been heart-warming to see the rest sunbathing and having dust baths as well as foraging in the open for tasty titbits from the soil. Now their feathers are growing back and they are emerging as individual characters with an established pecking order. We have even been rewarded with the occasional egg, far sooner than we were told it would take for them to come into lay again. They have been quite a talking point and a hit with visiting children. Tomatoes and hanging baskets In the meantime Stephen Clee has kindly allowed us to use his greenhouse to raise our tomatoes which now are showing their first flower trusses and the hanging baskets have been planted up and are waiting to go out. We are even thinking of entering “Bewdley in Bloom! Val Austin

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6th JUNE 2011

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee June 2012

With the Queen having formally announced that celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee will take place over the long Bank Holiday week-end of 2nd to 5th June, the Town Council has set up a Working Group to work with schools and voluntary organisations to seek ideas and then arrange some suitable party or celebratory event. It’s hoped similar activities will occur throughout the country. Police Sergeant Chris Aimes

Bewdley’s well known and respected Police Sergeant is shortly to be redeployed to Kidderminster but as a tribute to the valuable work he has done it was agreed the Mayor would write to him and express her thanks on behalf of the Town for his service and advice which he has always given in a very practical and fair way. Bewdley Members of Parliament Roll

Councillors warmly welcomed the offer by Bewdley Civic Society to arrange for a new wooden display board to be hung in the Council Chamber listing the Members of Parliament representing the Borough of Bewdley from 1832 through to 1945. At present the roll finishes at 1880 and hence fails to record those that served for the following 65 years including Stanley Baldwin who was returned to Parliament at ten successive General Elections. Street Amenity Licences

The Town Council was consulted by the District Council as to two applications by The Cock & Magpie and The Mug House to extend the hours at which food and drink could be served at the tables and chairs outside on the footpath until midnight. Councillors felt that was too late and recommended the hours of operation be limited to 11.00pm. Blackstone Picnic Site and Blackstone Riverside Park

The Council learned how easy it was to get confused between these two sites which, though close to one another, were on opposite sides of the river. Examples were given of how walking groups intending to go to the Riverside Park on the west mistakenly thought their destination was the Picnic Site on the east and vice versa. Councillors agreed with a suggestion that the Riverside Park should instead be renamed Ribbesford Riverside Park. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are: 4th July, 1st August, 5th September, 10th October, 7th November and 5th December. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Home baking to support for Motor Nuerone research

As many of you know all the money made from my homebaking in St. Anne’s Church now goes to support the Motor Neurone charity. Motor neurone disease is a serious and incurable condition where, over time, the nerves in the brain and spine experience a progressive loss of function. This affects people’s ability to walk, speak, breathw and swallow. Research I have been asked if I could help fund research into motor nuerone being carried by Dr Robin Highley. He is working at Sheffield University which is a centre of excellence for neurodegeneration. Dr Highley is hopeful that his project will generate important information about the chain of events that cause motor neurones to degenerate. Such knowledge could be used to develop drugs designed to slow disease progression. Would you like to help? Ask me to bake a cake and give me loads of money for it. Your money could help make a breakthrough!! Please!!! Thanks Cate Gillespie (402151)

J uly in the forest

This is the height of summer when most birds will have finished rearing their first broods and may be onto their second. The bird boxes which were put up in our orchards to encourage some of the rarer woodland birds have produced a good crop of blue tits and great tits, while the redstarts chose to nest in our wood pile! We hope to see flycatchers hunting in the fields, perching on the fence posts in between their hunting flights. The spring’s prodigious spawning of toads produced hundreds of young and I watched many tiny toads, less than 1cm long, leaving the pond of their birth a month ago. Now they will be among the vegetation, feeding on small invertebrates and trying to evade capture by predators. Like frogs and newts, toads are often found under logs and rocks where they can keep cool and moist, although toads are much more resistant to dry soil conditions than the others. As you walk in the woods look out for the tiny footprints of fallow fawns out and about with their mothers for the first time. During the first week or so of their lives they lie quietly concealed in undergrowth where the does return periodically to feed them. Among our events listed below there is an opportunity for local community organisations and businesses to look round the new Discovery Centre to see whether they can benefit from its unique features. Chat to the staff and enjoy some light refreshments from 3pm to 6pm. RSVP to Liz Bunney: liz.bunney@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or 01299 266929.
