BEYOND THE PAGES The Design Issue.
Conception, projét, modéle, plan and élaborer are all words the French use in relation to describe a truly integral component in every individual’s lifeFdesign. Without design, nothing would or could ever come into existence. I’m not talking all philosophic or ontological, I’m merely stating a physical truth; Be it a chair, a bracelet, a dress or a kitchen sink, a design must be in place for said object to begin. The starting point, the seed, the egg, the embryo, the inception, and the nucleus originate in a variety of diverse areas in the body and mind of a fashion designer. It can be a colour, a strip of fabric, a textured edge or an inspiring body of work, stirring and igniting a spark of creative ability ready to take form. For VOL.6, DESIGN is everything, shining the spotlight on not just the designer, but the art and core of the collections and the garments on display. Take fashion stylist Jamie Russell who’s inaugural designs discuss the idea of destiny and pre-governed existence in THE FATES; in which, the threads of life have been redrawn into an avant-garde debut collection. Hand-cut PVC fringing appears provocatively modern, while hand-woven strands of jersey, lace and wool redefine the traditional. This is couture clothing in its purest form, rejecting machineled mass production in favour of the hand-crafted, bespoke garment. Stripping things back to basics in our next offering, in the appropriately named BLANK STATE. A blank canvas if you will, showcasing the contemporary and the minimal originator of the ideas and conceptions we come to craft. Basically it’s a white on white shoot. Featuring CMPR model Carlos Djalo, photographed by the soon to be UAL student Mitchell Cahoon. Playing with textures, silhouettes and several hand-made pieces from local fashion & textile students from the Belfast School of Art. Then we move to all things London in DETAILS @ LC:M SS1 6. A close encounter with the emerging design talent of the London Collections: Men SS1 6 Showrooms and the street style pioneers who flock to central London twice a year to show off their personality and individualism through the method of design detail.
It’s not all futurism, theatricality and simplicity, heading back in time to the era of the 70s, producing awkward shapes, peculiar colours and some rather questionable clothing choices via ZEITGEIST. An editorial fronted by London’s Established Models Shane Gallagher, in a photoset taken by Dublin-based fashion photographer Ricky Mangala. Who just so happens to be an Architect student on the side. Flower power with a slice of serenity anyone? Closing the issue on the latest collection from BEYOND MAN APPAREL. Entitled ‘URHEILU’, The Finnish word for sports derived from the adjective urhea meaning brave, the unisex line is a ten piece collection encompassing all elements of strength, confidence, power, ability and drive. Focusing on a monochrome colour palette to inject a modern and almost futuristic aesthetic to stylish versatile, wearable streetinspired-sportswear utilising digital prints and advanced heat sublimation processes. Shot by Dean Ryan McDaid, the collection is brought to life by the unique and outstandingly striking faces of Stephen Quinlan (coverboy) & Hannah O’Brien. Both signed to Dublin’s distinctive modelling agency NOT ANOTHER. By far, my favourite issue to date. Enjoy. “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs
