The New Regionalism a Group Exhibit in Cardinal Gallery
A new Regionalism in art has emerged. Born of the nature and wildlife art movements of the 80s and 90s – and deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition – this movement carries forward the essential values of an earlier, more enlightened age. Regional art movements appear every few generations, in response to the times. The Romantic painters are widely regarded as the first Regionalists, in England and the United States, where they spoke out against, the social, economic and environmental impact of the Industrial Revolution. Undaunted, independent artists continue to be engaged with real world issues; they buck the trends and fight to keep a valuable tradition alive. The goal of the Regional artist therefore, is to counter the influence of postmodern ideas. Realism is the expression of choice for these artists; ‘perspective’, ‘perception’ and an objective point of view. The central values of the ‘Romantic’ movement of the Nineteenth Century – beauty, nature and truth are conveyed most effectively through 2017 BFAF Regionalism Artists

representational forms, and these timeless values inform regional painters of our day, as they did then. As regular as clockwork, on the heels of a revolution in digital technology this time, Regionalism responds to a new set of issues. Among these – fittingly, in Canada’s sesquicentennial year – sovereignty and national self-determination; in an era of globalization, national is the new regional. An awareness of the environment – and the understanding that our health and well-being is inextricably linked to that of the natural world – can be preserved only so long as we maintain a connection to nature. In an increasingly urban, technology based society, the role of the nature artist has never been so important: to foster concern for, and understanding of, the natural world – particularly among younger generations. Away from the glitter, glamour, and trends of the big city ‘art scene’, Regionalists have not been distracted. They have maintained their focus and still speak to issues of importance; for the society in which they work and the world in which we all live. Independent artists today are the eyes of society; theirs is an art for the people.

Celebrating 40 Years!
n March of 1978 Robert Creighton, the owner of Land O Lakes Restaurant Outpost #2 and member of the Buckhorn Community Centre Board of Directors approached Edwin Matthews about the idea of having a summer art show as a fundraiser to pay for the mortgage of the brand new Buckhorn Community Centre. Robert Creighton was a local business owner who had an interest in the community. He served on the Board of Directors from 1976 to 1987. His wife Catherine was one of the first managers of the Community Centre in 1982. In 1984 the Creighton’s daughter Judy came to work as the cleaner. In 1986 Judy was promoted to Manager and continues in that role today. Barbara and Edwin Matthews, founders of the Gallery on the Lake, were the first co-coordinators of the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival, and continued to be a driving force behind it for many years. Edwin Matthews and Michael Dumas donated all of the proceeds from an entire limited edition ($50,000.00) to pay for the construction materials of the initial group of exhibition buildings in what is now Festival Park. Michael painted the painting whose image was reproduced, signed the prints and assisted Edwin in the promotion. Edwin footed the bill for printing, designed and paid for all the printed promotional materials, secured significant free exposure from the media, and took care of the sales and shipping of all the prints. Initially, the exhibits were housed within the Community Centre and public school across the road. Local residents showed their support by helping to erect the display booths and promoting the event. Over time, large tents were brought in to accommodate the growing number of exhibitors from near and far. The tents were replaced in turn by an expansion of the Community Centre building and the addition of 11 permanent galleries in the woodland setting of Festival Park. Forty years later, the award-winning Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is still raising funds for the Buckhorn Community Centre. The Festival continues to be the premier annual event at this venue. Some of the exhibiting artists from the very beginning are still here today: including Michael Dumas, Eddie LePage and Joan Tovey. (Michael and Eddie actually had a hand in building some of the galleries in Festival Park!) The cooperative spirit displayed over the last 40 years has endured. Hundreds of volunteers continue to make the Festival part of their summer routine, with some even booking their summer vacation around the weekend of the Festival. The success of the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival continues due to the dedication of these fine people.

We are very excited to have Lynn Woodcroft, Sales Representative, Royal LePAGE FRANK Real Estate join us as our 1st ever Legacy Sponsor!
The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival stands out as one of the best international festivals of its kind in Canada. Everyone involved with the creation of this highly successful event is passionate about the arts and art education, and has a strong commitment to continually enhancing the art experience for all who attend. Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is many things, including a memorable collection of world-class art, entertainment and incredible cuisine. With the help of over 200 dedicated volunteers, the Festival provides a venue for visitors from across Ontario, Quebec, the north-eastern United States and some parts of the United Kingdom to participate in a world renowned experience at a very reasonable cost. This multi-day event brings hundreds of new visitors to the village of Buckhorn and surrounding communities every year. The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is the major fundraiser for the Buckhorn Community Centre: an independently-owned, not-for-profit, charitable organization and the hub of cultural and recreational programs for families living and vacationing in the Peterborough County area. Lynn’s sponsorship of the 40th Anniversary of the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival will provide positive exposure for the development of artistic endeavours and help to support the Buckhorn Community Centre which provides many programs and services within our communities and the Kawartha Lakes region. The generous support of Lynn Woodcroft makes it possible for the Buckhorn Community Centre to exist and to assist in making the community a great place to live. Lynn, please accept our sincere thanks for your support.
