COVER ARTIST

How Man Was Made by Lewis Parker Our 2016 “Special Exhibit” ‘Real People Real Lives’ is a collection of work from the late Lewis Parker. Lewis Edgar Hyde Parker was born in Toronto in 1926, the eldest of 4 children. From an early age, he showed both a remarkable ability to draw and a high degree of selfdirection in creating and completing drawing projects. By the age of 12, Lewis had amassed dozens of sketch books filled with people and storybook characters. In 1968, Parker travelled with photographer Eugene Aliman to western Canada to paint the Plains Indians.

2

The Huronia Council in Ontario then commissioned Lewis to devise historical paintings for Sainte-Marie-Among-theHurons. This inspired collaboration with acclaimed painter Gerald Lazare to create the Huron Collection, 36 paintings depicting the life and culture of Canada’s Huron Indians. The National Film Board of Canada then sought Parker, in partnership with Lazare, for film work involving both the Beluga Whale and Plains Indians. Lazare and Parker joined forces again in 1972 to render a massive project for Ottawa’s Museum of Man, representing the history of mankind inside 3 domes within the Museum, each measuring 16 by 75 feet.

any thanks go to the Buckhorn Community Centre for hosting the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival for the last 39 years. The Buckhorn Community Centre & Athletic Association is committed to offering a wide variety of activities, events and programs to meet the recreational and social needs of the Community. In order to build a vibrant and sustainable Centre, the foundation of the Community success, is the continued dedication of Volunteers. Incredibly, 30+ years ago a group of very special people had a dream and a vision. They saw the need for a community centre in Buckhorn. These courageous and generous people actually mortgaged their homes to

realize their dream. With the help of Wintario funding, they built the Buckhorn Community Centre. The Buckhorn Community Centre opened its doors to the public in March 1978. That spring, President Bob Creighton approached local artist Edwin Matthews with an idea to have an art show as a fundraiser to help pay the mortgage. That is how the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival and Sale began. At the time, no one knew if people would want to come to a little hamlet like Buckhorn to enjoy and buy art. Various committees were set up by the Centre to start the process. Edwin Matthews organized the “Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival project with incredible enthusiasm and vision and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival welcomes the following guest exhibitors: Kawartha Land Trust

Kawartha Land Trust is a nongovernmental organization and a registered charity dedicated to acquiring land and interests in land and maintaining it in a natural state. More than twenty significant natural sites, along with the life they support, are currently preserved under KLT. This progress is only made possible through devoted community partners, generous land donors and financial supporters, and extraordinary volunteers who give their time to become stewards of the land. Visit their display in the Hummingbird Gallery. More information can be found at www.kawarthalandtrust.org

6

Peterborough Field Naturalists

The Peterborough Field Naturalists and its members are involved in many volunteer projects which monitor and document specific aspects of our natural world. The Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) is a registered charity and active club in Peterborough, Ontario, with a history dating back to 1940. When you join the PFN as a member, you help to promote nature conservation, education, and active outdoor lifestyles in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. Look for the PFN booth in the Community Centre.
