NEXT HUB

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Design a higher education space in Washington, DC that would serve as an extension of NEXT University. This space would be a place for students who are enrolled in online coursework to gather and engage with others doing the same.

CONCEPT: Growing despite boundaries, trees and other natural plants continue to thrive in urban environments because of their ability adapt to their surroundings and develop beyond their barriers. This process is known as biological weathering and lends itself to the NEXT Hub design in several ways. The resilient plants in this situation are representational of the students who are using this space as a means of growth and development, and the man-made materials in urban cities are representational of the challenges that these individuals have had to face in their lifetime. NEXT Hub will allow for individuals to push beyond life’s challenges and better themselves as employees and members of society through access to technology, academic aid and exposure to natural elements. Relating to the concept further, the plants natural growth pattern, where the various stages of life continue to make them stronger, adds to the idea of creating resilient and strong individuals who can be successful in their lives.

The branding of this facility features the university logo, subdued by a plant-like graphic. This imagery is visible on the waterfall feature at the entrance of both floors.

The circular stairs connect the two floors and are made of concrete. The handrail consists of a series of wooden slats similar to the custom ceiling in the learning commons.

In-Between Learning spaces are placed adjacent to each classroom to create more work space for active students. Steelcase’s Post and Beam product is used to delineate these spaces from the corridors.

Smith System furniture is used in the child care zone. These products are durable and are fun in shape, helping to excite the users while having a practical application.

A designated tutoring center was designed on the 11th floor. This space features 3 private rooms and open seating for 12 individuals. The center will help students focus on subjects that they may be struggling with, by providing a space for tutors, faculty and peers to meet and work. 1 2

TUBULAR OATS

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Design a retail store in Mission Bay, CA that appeals to members of the community between the ages of 30 and 50 years old. Ensure that proper corridor sizes are used.

CONCEPT: Action- Provide an interactive experience that allows the user to create their own granola mixes in a trendy and quirky way. Interaction- Tubular Oats would provide an environment where the user is in control of their breakfast blend. The DIY part of the experience should spark the user with a bit of joy and entertainment. Object- A new alternative to granola based breakfast will be sold at the store in a variety of options; users can customize their blends with a variety of granola, dried fruits, and specialty toppings into personalized glass jars. User- Research shows transparency is an important consideration of young urban professionals. Due to the probability of this age group to opt for fresh ingredients over pre-packaged foods, this age bracket was chosen as the target user for the store.

The branding of this retail store focused on the tubular structures used throughout the space as well as the product that is intended to be sold. The word tubular is also meant to bring a sense of nostalgia to the customers.

As per the program requirements, every fixture was designed to represent Tubular Oat’s brand.

These tube-like fixtures were designed to house the various oats in stock. When full, these fixtures are to be attached to their corresponding tube extension that adds color to the space and interacts with the ceiling plane.

Employees can refill the tubes by opening a small door at the top of the fixture and pouring the product in. Tubes can also be removed for cleaning.

BLACKSBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Re-imagine the existing Blacksburg Public Library into a space that the community uses more frequently. Ensure that the spaces are acoustically appropriate and improve visibility throughout the space for members of the library as well as the staff.

CONCEPT: The concept that we are working with is Transcending Limits, which is derived from the libraries branding label of “One stop, Unlimited possibilities.” This applies to the project in 2 ways: The library will provide services that may surpass current resources available to the residents of Blacksburg, as well as exceeding the boundaries of life itself. Literature allows the reader to live multiple lives, while transporting themselves into other worlds or into the lives and experiences of others around this world whether it be in the past or present. Art parallels literature in the sense that both are limitless, informative, and expressive. This idea will be incorporated into the design by using forms derived from local art to interact with and connect spaces across the library. To accomplish this, we want to manipulate the ceiling to support or create a form that breaks the boundaries set by the architecture. We may also reflect this form elsewhere to provide a vertical element.

Constructed of wood, this suspended ceiling feature offers acoustic properties for the library. By dividing the structure into segments, residents of the town are able to decorate a face of the fixture. The idea being that they will return to the library to the look at their work.

The rent-able study rooms are adjacent to the quiet reading area to better control the acoustics of the spaces. By isolating quiet and loud zones, patrons of the library can use each space without audible interference. 1 2 3

Outer space was chosen as a theme within the children’s library because it is timeless and gender neutral. Space also follows the concept of transcending our limits beyond Earth. This space features a 3-dimensional wall mural of the solar system (pictured to the right), as well as a chalkboard wall.

“Flip-book” shelves are used in this space for easy browsing and to help maintain organization. Bla Station’s Oppo chairs, which resemble bean bag chairs, are used to add additional comfort for the readers.

A cafe was placed adjacent to the children’s library and teen area to entice working parents and young adults to purchase the goods. To connect this kiosk to the rest of the space, the mural imagery continues onto the front counter top.

A mural spans the length of the library and features an abstract line graphic that represents the nearby geography. The various lines indicate walking paths, roads and the original 16 squares of Blacksburg.

MARKER RENDERINGS

OBJECTIVE: Establish proper sketching techniques as well as basic marker rendering skills. These skills allow designers to portray materials, spaces, shapes and sections in a legible manner. The tactile nature of these assignments connected the digital skills taught in Virginia Tech’s Interior Design program, to a hand drawn communication tool.

MATERIAL SIMULATIONS “Render two sets of simulations: 2 woods, 2 marbles, 1 metal, and 1 glass. Strive for material believability: material depth, detail, color, contrast, etc.” “Draw and render furniture on one sheet of marker paper. Refer to pictorial resources from print or from web. Use a variety of line widths,styles, and hatching to build your furniture forms and portray materials in a believable manner.”

ALTERED STATES REVISITED “Change your position or viewpoint so that when you construct the perspective drawing, the perspective is ‘altered’ or ‘skewed’ compared to normal eye level viewpoints.... Frame your drawing showing space shape compositional elements and render the final version with different line weights, hatch, color, material, light and shadow.”
