INTRODUCTION

GOALS + OBJECTIVES 1 Design an acoustically soothing environment in the boarding areas • Use materials that surpass the requirement of acoustic standards

2 Diffuse lingering odors of ammonia, commonly associated with pet urine • Use passive ventilation consistent with Net-Zero energy efficient practices to reduce strong odors in the interior

3 Ensure that the kennel areas are fit to accommodate animals of all sizes at all times • Develop a modular system that allows for the size of each kennel or cage to be modified

4 Make supplies easily accessible from all points of the unit • Maximize square footage by increasing storage within each unit

5 Create a more sustainable interior • Use Cradle to Cradle certified materials wherever possible

5

PROBLEM STATEMENT During emergencies such as hurricanes and flooding, there is rarely a plan for moving companion animals from shelters in ‘danger zones’ to safer locations. This lack of organization often leads to miscommunication, over crowding, and potentially harmful conditions for both the animals and their care takers. This project consists of modular housing structures for companion animals that will be designed specifically for the Osceola County Animal Services Facility, located in St. Cloud, Florida. The design intent for this project is to aid animal hospitals and shelters in need of additional housing space due to the influx of companion animals seeking safety during emergencies.

THESIS STATEMENT By designing a modular, net-zero structure with sustainable materials and finishes, an efficient and comfortable space for displaced dogs and cats can be created. To enhance the efficacy of the space, materials and finishes will be carefully selected to ensure an interior that is:

6

• Easy to maintain • Efficient in reducing noise levels due to barking • Adaptable, to better meet the demands of the client • Comfortable for dogs and cats of any size

CONCEPT STATEMENT By taking inspiration from a collapsible dog crate, a product that forms space by combining rectangular geometry with looped connections, the concept of components interacting with one another to create a versatile unified form was developed. This idea informs the construction of the exterior, where pre-fabricated panels that connect to one another using simple joint geometry will be used to create the main structure. These panels help to establish how the interior will function, whether it be used for various kennels, cages or both.

The EARS will be located adjacent to St. Cloud’s Osceola County Animal Services building, which sits on 10 acres of land. The existing building is approximately 60,000 square feet, and sits on 1.7 acres of land. The additional structures will occupy approximately 2 acres, leaving 6.3 acres open for further development.

Saint Cloud

Osceola County

St. Cloud, Florida is located on the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga. This town falls within Osceola County, and is 18.68 square miles large, of which 0.11% is water.

10

OSCEOLA COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES The shelter’s primary missions and goals consist of 3 simple ideas: • To provide the best care possible to ALL animals that come to the shelter

• To be diligent in their efforts to save lives • To educate and assist the community with animal related problems

This shelter offers various services in addition to the housing and re-homing of animals. These additional services are listed below.

The urban planning of the site focuses on the circulation for staff navigating the area. The two vertical axes allow staff to transport supplies to and from shelters, while the three horizontal axes connect each shelter to water and electricity. This area is meant to be navigated via truck, golf cart or ATV.

This product is commonly used in this type of construction. • Glass windows will be attached at the front the back of each unit. The use of glass in high-occupancy spaces like this is preferred, to reduce the spread of contagious diseases. • These units can hold up to four large cats, and feature a separate compartment for litter. • The litter compartments include an air filter system that pulls the contaminated air into a ventilation system; this helps to reduce the smell of ammonia associated with cat urine.

This product is commonly used in this type of construction. • The wall panels for these kennels feature a rubber beveled insert that is used to prevent cross contamination of liquids from one kennel to another. • Each kennel is designed to house one large dog, or two small dogs. • The panels that create the walls for each kennel are connected to the wall using a pin joint. This allows for the kennels to be installed at any dimension, although 4’ is the recommended size based on the door size.

This allows for maximum customization based on any mobility restrictions of each animal. • The ramp and stair attachments are constructed of wood, and feature a galvanized steel edge for installation purposes. • To install the ramp or stair attachment, the user would place the stair or ramp’s metal edge into the floor channel before or after the Canine Wall Panel C is installed. This channel is custom made to fit both the wall and access unit securely.

Staff Raising the Guillotine Door

DETAILS • The guillotine door and its attachment fixtures are made of galvanized steel. • A pulley system is used to open and close the guillotine door for each kennel. This system involves a chain with a hook on one end, to attach to the guillotine door, and a weight on the other. Once installed, the staff pull down on the weight to open the door. • The weight has an attachment hook on both ends, so that they can be connected to the chain and also locked into place if necessary. • To ensure that dogs of all shapes and sizes can use this access system, the doors for this project surpass the recommended doggy door size for extra-large dogs.

LIGHTING

Natural Light Diagram

Because the shelter has windows on each face, natural light will help to illuminate the space during the day time.

Although any lighting fixture can be used in the EARS, the recommended product is the KUAK by GARVILED. This suspended fixture is Cradle to Cradle certified and comes in various sizes.

Platek’s One 2.0 Down light and Mini ONE Bollard Sketches

Outdoor lighting is used along the travel paths and on the facade of each EARS. Any outdoor lighting fixture could be used, but the recommended products are Platek’s ONE 2.0 down light and Mini ONE Bollard. By using these two products, the outdoor paths are safe and cohesive.

FLOOR PLANS + NET-ZERO DESIGN DETAILS

52

Net-zero design consists of the idea that buildings can meet their annual energy requirements by using low-cost, locally available and non-polluting renewable sources. The site and structures facilitate net-zero design by the use of passive cooling, water catchment systems, sloped drainage and other unique features.

ASSEMBLY OPTIONS

60
