BLACKSBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Re-imagine the existing Blacksburg Public Library into a space that the community uses more frequently. Ensure that the spaces are acoustically appropriate and improve visibility throughout the space for members of the library as well as the staff.

CONCEPT: The concept that books can allow it’s reader to transcend physical limits and escape into a world different from their own was used to develop the design for this space. The library will not only provide the community with the books that can take them to places unimaginable, but also provide services to its members that surpass the current resources available.

A third year collaborative project with Taylor Renaud. 4

SUSPENDED CEILING FEATURE Constructed of wood, the suspended ceiling feature offers acoustic properties for the library as well as artistic opportunity.

This structure is divided into segments, allowing residents the ability to decorate its various faces.

The children’s library section features a 3-dimensional wall mural of the solar system (pictured to the right).

An outer space theme was chosen for the children’s library. Space follows the concept of transcending our limits beyond Earth.

A cafe was placed adjacent to the children’s library and teen area to entice working parents and young adults to purchase the goods.

TUBULAR OATS

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Design a retail store in Mission Bay, California that appeals to members of the community between the ages of 20 and 50 years old. Ensure that proper corridor sizes are used.

CONCEPT: This retail store caters to individuals who want customized breakfast blend cereals and granola mixes. Tubular Oats provides an environment where the customer is in control of their experience and product. The tube in Tubular Oats is represented by the various storage containers and circular motifs throughout the space.

A second year collaborative project with Lauren Walwur, Aileen De La Ree and Jon Pavalik. 12

Oat Tube Station

The geometry of the oat was used to develop the space planning for this retail space. By creating a circular pathway for customers, a natural flow is created.

NEXT HUB

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Design a higher education space in Washington, DC that would serve as an extension of NEXT University. This space would serve the students who are enrolled in online coursework to gather and engage with others doing the same.

CONCEPT: Growing despite boundaries, trees and other natural plants continue to thrive in urban environments because of their ability adapt to their surroundings and develop beyond their barriers. This process is known as biological weathering and lends itself to the NEXT Hub design in several ways. The resilient plants in this situation are representational of the students who are using this space as a means of growth and development. NEXT Hub and it’s resources will allow for individuals to push beyond life’s challenges and better themselves as employees and members of society.

A fourth year individual project. 18

STAIR FEATURE The circular stairs connect the two floors and also create an intimate respite space. Natural and man-made materials are used in this construction to further relate to the concept of nature overcoming urban obstacles.

In-Between Learning spaces were included in the design, and are placed adjacent to each classroom. The rendering shown on the right is number 5 on the 10th floor plan.

A hourly childcare space was incorporated into the design to aid parents furthering their education. Smith System furniture is used because of its durability and organic shape.

MARKER RENDERINGS

OBJECTIVE: Establish proper sketching techniques as well as basic marker rendering skills. These skills allow designers to portray materials, spaces, shapes and sections in a legible manner.

ALTERED STATES REVISITED “Change your position or viewpoint so that when you construct the perspective drawing, the perspective is ‘altered’ or ‘skewed’ compared to normal eye level viewpoints.... Frame your drawing showing space”

ROOM VIGNETTE “Looking at a photograph of interior design, accurately portray the variety of elements you see in perspective, materials, colors, light, and shadow.”
