INTERIOR DESIGN GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION ITDS 2224 FALL 2019

This course helped to establish proper sketching techniques as well as basic marker rendering skills. These skills allow designers to portray materials, spaces, shapes and sections in a legible manner. The tactile nature of these assignments connected the digital skills taught in Virginia Tech’s Interior Design program, to a hand drawn communication tool.

3

WEEK 1 MARKER LAYERING “Render different tone and color combinations and observe how layering marker strokes react to one another. Remember to not cover each square in its entirety with markers but, instead, let the paper come through at times.

4

5

WEEK 2 RENDERING A CUBE “Render three cubes and their backgrounds in 2pt perspective. In each pair, delineate the horizon line and vanishing points. Also, compose each pair in different positions above or below the horizon line and to the left or right of center of the picture plane.

6

7

WEEK 3 RENDERING SIMPLE SPACES PART 1 “On two sheets of marker paper, render six 1pt perspective studies and six 2 pt perspective studies. Shift the horizon line up and down and vanishing points right and left. Studies need to show line weight variety and style as well as marker stroke variety/style/color/tone.”

8

9

WEEK 4 RENDERING SIMPLE SPACES PART 2 “Follow the same format and method as Simple Spaces 1 above but this time include additions and subtraction on planes within your perspective studies. Work to achieve accurate perspective forms or voids and overall shadow believability. Also, work toward a harmony between marker stroke and pen lines using various hatch techniques.

10

11

WEEK 5 PASSAGE REVISITED “Revisit and delve deeper into your understanding the interior concept of Passage using the sectional doodling method presented in class...carefully consider color harmonies and sensitively address line weights and styles as well as hatch and tone techniques.

12

13

14

15

WEEK 6 DIAGRAMMING “Using diagrams, tell a story that speaks to an aspect of Blacksburg that characterizes the town’s identity or your experience living here. Stories might include, but are not limited to, places, events, time of day, history, activity, landscape, cityscape, etc. Use maps, images, or other graphics as a layer under your diagramming or referenced in your diagramming.”

16

17

WEEK 7 MATERIAL SIMULATIONS PART 1 “Render two sets of simulations: 2 woods, 2 marbles, 1 metal, and 1 glass. Strive for material believability: material depth, detail, color, contrast, etc.”

18

19

WEEK 8 MATERIAL SIMULATIONS PART 2 “Draw and render 5 pieces of furniture on one sheet of marker paper. Refer to pictorial resources from print or from web. Use a variety of line widths, styles, and hatching to build your furniture forms and portray materials in a believable manner.

20

21

WEEK 9 ROOM VIGNETTE “Looking at a photograph of interior design, accurately portray the variety of elements you see in perspective, materials, colors, light, and shadow.”

22

23

WEEK 10 ALTERED STATES REVISITED “Change your position or viewpoint so that when you construct the perspective drawing, the perspective is ‘altered’ or ‘skewed’ compared to normal eye level viewpoints.... Frame your drawing showing space shape compositional elements and render the final version with different line weights, hatch, color, material, light and shadow.”

24

25

WEEK 11 SPATIAL NARRATIVES “In one drawing, this rendering project brings together the various lessons learned across the semester’s marker assignments. In particular, this drawing will further techniques learned from assignments Rendering Spaces 1&2, process thumbnails from Passage, Material Simulations 1&2, and compositional principles from Altered States.”
