RISTOL City’s talismanic forward, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, frustrates and delights in equal measure. As if to prove the point, he missed an open goal and turned in a performance way beneath his own high standards in defeat at Crewe last week, prompting some Robins fans to even question his presence in head coach Sean O’Driscoll’s starting line-up. Seven days later, and the former Arsenal man produces the kind of emphatic response that really ought to silence his doubters for some considerable time to come. But then those are the inconsistencies that define a player who has divided opinion throughout his career. When Emmanuel-Thomas is good, he can be very good. Just ask Carlisle United, who were blown away by his hat-trick and a great strike from Scott Wagstaff, all four goals delivered within a 34-minute spell in the second half that could yet redefine City’s season. Trailing to Sean O’Hanlon’s 24th-minute header and 1-0 down at the break, the visitors were forced to confront the unpalatable prospect of being cut adrift at the foot of the League One table, potentially five points from safety. Tentative at times on the opening 45 minutes, the Robins failed to win enough second balls to deter a Carlisle side that enjoyed the upper hand in midfield and deserved to be in front. Encouraged by O’Driscoll and his assistant, John Pemberton, City’s players emerged for the second half with an altogether more positive mind-set and set about imposing themselves on proceedings for the first time. The results were almost instantaneous, Emmanuel-Thomas stooping to conquer from a close-range header laid on a proverbial plate for him by right-back Brendan Moloney, who worked wonders to keep the ball in play and then deliver a telling centre. Proving the old adage that goals change games, Carlisle reacted badly and the Robins, their tails up, scored another goal within two minutes to fundamentally alter the complexion of the game and effect a dramatic swing in the balance of power. Deployed in an attacking role be-

hind the strikers, Bobby Reid powered forward and slipped an astute pass inside to Emmanuel-Thomas, whose own particular version of the soft-shoe shuffle carried him clear of the covering defence and invited him to beat keeper Mark Gillespie from 15 yards out. Confidence now coursing through their veins, City’s young players refused to sit back and protect their lead, something they attempted

34 ● The number of second-half minutes it took for City to score four goals without success in previous games at Port Vale and MK Dons. Instead, they kept their foot on the pedal, continued to force the home side onto the back foot and were rewarded when Wagstaff controlled a lofted pass from the increasingly influential Emmanuel-Thomas on his chest and found the far top corner of the net with a breath-taking half volley that owed as much to renewed belief as it did to sound technique. Even when Liam Noble pulled a goal back 11 minutes from time, the visitors kept going forward and Emmanuel-Thomas completed his first senior treble to put the seal on a first League win in 22 games dating back to March 9. Having already scored with his head and right foot, he netted with his left foot after being set-up by substitute Joe Bryan and holding off O’Hanlon. His was the complete striker’s hat-trick and proved beyond

doubt that a team seemingly incapable of keeping clean sheets desperately needs a maverick influence within its ranks. This long-overdue result not only lifts City off the foot of the table and to within three points of safety ahead of back-to-back home games against Oldham Athletic and Crawley Town, it also relieves some of the pressure on O’Driscoll and City’s board of directors, who have continued to back him in the face of poor results. One win does not make a season, but it is at least a start and offers a young team something tangible to build on now that they have finally shed the stigma of the longest winless run in the entire Football League. Although they celebrated wildly at the final whistle, City’s supporters have suffered for long enough to realise the importance of keeping their feet on terra-firma this week. How can they do otherwise when the defensive frailties that have done so much to undermine their team this season still persist? O’Driscoll has sought to perfect the balance between defence and attack, yet his team continues to concede soft goals. Without a clean sheet in League One this term, the Robins were again found wanting when confronted by set-piece routines. This persistent failing re-emerged with calamitous results when James Berrett swung over a corner and O’Hanlon rose unchallenged to head in at the far post. And Carlisle’s second goal was also the product of a momentary loss of concentration, Noble being allowed time and space to pick his spot from 22 yards out. But then this was one of those occasions when the result was more important than the performance and City can be forgiven their shortcomings in defence this once.

Match reaction CITY winger Scott Wagstaff had a good feeling about the long trip to Brunton Park even before he scored his fourth goal of the season to secure a first league win in nearly eight months. And no wonder – the Cumbrian outpost is fast becoming the 23-year-old’s lucky ground. A member of a Charlton side that came from behind to beat Carlisle 4-3 at the start of his career, Wagstaff experienced the joy of winning promotion from League One when returning with the Addicks a year later.

“I’ve had some good times at this ground,” said Wagstaff, pictured, whose stunning 71st-minute strike helped City end their long sequence without a league win. “I remember coming here with Charlton for the first time; we were three up, they pegged us back to 3-3 and then we scored a last-minute winner. “Then we beat them 1-0 at their place to be promoted a couple of

seasons. There were great celebrations that day and the place has fond memories for me. “It may be a long way away, but I love playing there and the journey was definitely worthwhile.” Match-winner Jay Emmanuel-Thomas dedicated his first hat-trick in senior football to City’s travelling fans. Victory lifted the Robins off the foot of the League One table and sent 364 hard-core fans home

and really deserved a win. “We are all so delighted that we have given them something to shout about and that they are going home happy. “It felt great to be able to go over to that side of the ground and celebrate with them afterwards.” Of his hat-trick, the Londoner said: “It’s the first one I’ve ever scored in senior football. “I got a few in youth football and in reserve games down the years, but nothing like that. It was the perfect hat-trick – a header and goals with both feet.”

Fan’s view by Matthew Withers IT’S taken 13 games this season and 22 games in total, but Saturday it finally happened as Bristol City managed a victory in the league. Following another trying week for Sean O'Driscoll and his players, not too many had expected City to claim all three points away from home against Carlisle. City’s head coach recalled fit-again Ryan Taylor to the starting line-up and kept faith with Jay Emmanuel Thomas. JET has been off his game the last couple of weeks and I'll be the first to admit that I would have rested the former Arsenal and Ipswich forward, having felt that accommodating JET was proving to be too much of a compromise to the team shape. Let's be clear, one swallow does not make a summer, and O'Driscoll's job as head coach must still be in question. Following the defeat to Brentford in midweek, O'Driscoll somewhat lost his cool when being asked if he was still up for the fight. Now I find his post and pre-match comments dull to say the least, but he had spent five minutes defending his players and talking about the positives from the Brentford game and the interviewer did ask a question that was obvious to those that had listened to what had been said before. I felt it was a stupid question and O'Driscoll's response in itself showed that he was up for the fight and yet he was still pushed. The interviewer wanted a sound-bite and headline and so I can understand him pressing. After all was said and done, it only highlighted the pressure that O'Driscoll is under and it was no surprise that assistant coach John Pemberton came out and handled the media after the Carlisle game. I would have been really surprised to see O'Driscoll in charge now, despite everything that has been said by Jon Lansdown if we had not secured the victory on Saturday. While things may be moving in the right direction off the pitch, we have struggled on it and the fans’ patience is wearing thin. When we conceded in the first half, it looked like the writing may be on the wall. Pemberton came out after the game and admitted that the team had not played well in the first half and got a verbal volley from O'Driscoll during the interval. The team responded and scored four great second-half goals, with JET scoring his first professional hat-tick and Scott Wagstaff scoring the goal of the game. We need to take the second 45 minutes into next week’s home game and push forward. Massive praise to all of those who made the long trip north, it's a journey I have made and it's rewarding that those fans were the ones who got to see the team win after so long. Congratulations to O'Driscoll, his staff and the players. Now let's see how we take this forward.

happy. “That one’s for the fans,” said Emmanuel-Thomas, who emerged from the dressing room clutching the match ball. He became the first City player to score a hat-trick in a competitive match since Phil Jevons shot down Gillingham in an FA Cup tie way back in 2006. “This is such a long journey and we know it is going to take hours for them to get back home. “To have that many come all this way to support us is nothing short of brilliant. “They have backed us all season

Fan’s view with Dennis Payter IT shows where we are at the moment when our manager was pleased with a 0-0 draw from a home game.Yes, Chesterfield are one of the promotion-chasing sides, but it was a good time to play them as they had not won for seven games, although I was pleased with the determination we showed after the Accrington debacle. John Ward had warned the side not to be southern softies on a dark, wet and windy Tuesday night in Lancashire, but I’m afraid that is just what we were. Looking around the Accrington ground I thought: “What are Bristol Rovers doing here?” It seemed more like a non-league ground as we sat in the back row of the stand, just three rows from the front. I suspect some of our lads thought they just had to turn up to win. But they sadly under estimated how the bottom-of-the-table side was prepared for a battle, we were not. Having gifted us an early goal we thought the side without a win all season would just fold and was there for the taking. But we just sat back and invited them on to us. It was a disastrous tactic and we could have conceded more than two before half-time. The inexperience of our youngsters showed up badly. They work hard and are reasonably okay on the ball, but on the night there were not ball winners and there were no tackles going in. As the home side pressed forward in waves it needed people to “put their foot in” just to break up play even if it meant taking a booking, but it just wasn’t happening. We improved in the last 20 minutes when we switched to two wingers, but it was too little, too late and a very disappointing result. At least against Chesterfield those same players showed more determination in an entertaining second half and could not be faulted for their effort. But the same shortcomings were still there for all to see. The worry is where are the goals coming from as Ryan Brunt works had but struggles to hold the ball up. Even on the occasions he did win the ball from the usual poor service, he was more often than not isolated up front on his own. That is not good enough when visiting sides pack their defences. We need to be more positive in home games with more people pushing forward. On Saturday, particularly in the first half, Eliot Richards and Alefe Santos were playing too deep. It was the same old story, just the names were different. At least we did have a go in the last 20 minutes with Santos showing great promise down the right. I am sorry if I am boring you with the same old point, but unless we can get Matt Harrold fit or get in another striker it is going to be another long, hard winter.

Battling Rovers show a real fighting spirit

A

LEFE Santos provided strong evidence that Rovers are building the right mentality into their young players, as well as nurturing some exciting talent. Known as Alfie within the club, the 18-year-old winger found himself up against a veteran of more than 600 League games in 35-year-old Chesterfield left-back Ritchie Humphreys. The former Hartlepool United stalwart is still a formidable player at League Two level and emerged from an intriguing duel with plenty of credit. What impressed about Santos was that he never got disappointed if his end product was less than threatening and remained ready to take on an opponent nearly twice his age at every opportunity right up to the final whistle. It would have been easy to shirk that responsibility and take the option of more safe passes. Instead,

I told Alfie not to worry if his first cross flew behind the goal or got blocked, but to just keep on trying to get balls into the box. He is a quiet kid, but a very good listener and he showed he had something about him today.

Santos followed to the letter the advice of manager John Ward just before kick-off. “I told Alfie not to worry if his first cross flew behind the goal or got blocked, but to just keep on trying to get balls into the box,” said the Rovers boss. “He is a quiet kid, but a very good listener and he showed he had something about him today.” Ward was sufficiently impressed to

leave Santos on for the whole of the game when it would have been easy to substitute him in the effort to protect a point in the closing stages. Faith in his youngsters is part of the experienced manager’s make-up and he is as concerned about developing the right attitudes as improving the skills of his rookie professionals. There was no questioning the commitment of any Rovers player in this game. What the team lack in quality they make up for in effort and a clean sheet against high-flying Chesterfield was a just reward. The visitors looked the more likely to break the deadlock, particularly in the second half when Eoin Doyle spurned the best chance of the game and Steve Mildenhall’s long outstretched left leg kept out a goalbound shot from Gary Roberts. But, with Tom Parkes and Will Packwood strong at the heart of the defence and Ollie Clarke aiding his back-four from a deep midfield role, Rovers had enough about them to resist. They might even have nicked all three points at the end. Clarke’s 20-yard shot was well struck and brought a decent save from Tommy Lee, diving to his right, as the fans behind the goal at the Blackthorn End prepared to celebrate. Those supporters had again played their part in remaining patient and behind their team, despite a lack of cutting edge up front.

Clarke’s shot was his side’s only effort on target. Yet they were applauded off that the end in a manner that must have given the younger members of the team a huge lift. It might have been a different story had Doyle not unaccountably elected to try and lob the tall Mildenhall when breaking clear on to Armand Gnanduillet’s 48th-minute pass. The striker got horribly underneath the ball and sent it sailing over the crossbar. It wasn’t Doyle's day as a second caution for a foul on Santos in the closing stages saw him banished to the dressing room by referee Iain Williamson. Rovers must improve as an attacking force if they are to move clear of the League Two drop zone. Ryan Brunt and Eliot Richards have both had their injury problems this season and not surprisingly looked rusty as a partnership. Both need a run of games. The hosts failed to fashion a clear chance, their midfield players often too preoccupied with winning the ball, rather than using it creatively. But there were plenty of positives to take into the tough trip to Oxford next Saturday, not least the spirit of togetherness that still appears to exist between the fans and their enthusiastic young guns. Match reaction OLLIE Clarke admitted his eyes lit up at the prospect of a winning goal when presented with an opening in the closing moments. The 21-year-old midfielder, from Portishead, who has already had to overcome three serious injuries, let fly from 20 yards, but saw his effort beaten away by Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee. “I looked up and thought I could find the top corner,” said Clarke. “I concentrated on hitting the target because I don’t do that with enough of my shots, but it ended up quite a good height for the goalkeeper and he made a good save.” Stringing four successive starts together is success in itself for Clarke,

whose fledgling career has been hit by a series of setbacks. “When I was 18 I ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in my right knee, which takes six to nine months to recover from, and then I damaged the medial meniscus in the same knee and was out for about two months,” he said. “I’ve also had a grade three hamstring tear, which is the worst you can get, and was sidelined for around seven weeks with that. “Now I have been back in training for a month and everything feels fine. I’ve always felt that if only I could get a run of games in the side I would be able to prove my fitness to fight for a regular place.

“Luck plays such a big part and so far I have had the worst sort. It’s going to take more than knocks or bruises to keep me out now because I just want to keep playing.” Clarke felt Rovers’ perfor mance was a step up on the previous home game against Wycombe Wanderers, which they lost to a late goal. “I thought we were much better on the ball today,” he said. “It was hard work against a good team, but I didn’t think Chesterfield looked a lot better than us. “I played a little bit deeper than usual. The gaffer said he wanted me to protect the back-four, get in amongst their strikers and break up the play. I enjoy getting in the mix

After a couple of defeats a draw feels much better and gives us extra motivation for the next game.” Clarke is also enjoying the chance to develop a central midfield partnership with John-Joe O’Toole. “JJ is always talking to me and we bounce things off one another,” he said. “The more experienced players are great in that respect. “They keep offering advice and if you do something well will give you a pat on the back. If you misplace a pass they tell you that you are better than

that. It is difficult for a young player coming into a side not doing as well as people hoped, but it’s important to remember the gaffer has faith in you and age shouldn’t really be a factor. “The physical demands of the game are a lot tougher than in Under-21 matches. You don’t get as much time on the ball and have to work a lot harder to get it back.” Clarke was impressed by the contribution of winger Alfie Santos at the tender age of only 18. “I thought he did really well against an experienced full-back,” he said. “With a bit of luck we might have got on the end of one of his crosses. But if we keep defending like that the goals will come.”

Five-try Bristol need to find a ruthless streak

B

RISTOL lost one GKIPA Championship point last week – over what the Rugby Football Union deemed a breach of regulations in their recent win over Bedford – but they gained one back within 33 minutes against Nottingham. Flying out of the blocks – once again – Bristol’s first-half performance had everything that is good about the way Andy Robinson and Sean Holley want them to play: pace, speed of thought, invention, movement and finishing. But the way director of rugby Robinson spoke after the match, his enduring memory of this – Bristol’s fourth straight bonus-point victory in the Championship – is more likely to be of a flat, untidy and error-riddled second-half display than the free-scoring fireworks of the opening 40 minutes. Both the good and the bad are important to understand if Bristol are to win promotion back to the Aviva Premiership next June – and both were on display at the Memorial Stadium. Bristol have improved dramatically since suffering their only defeat of the season against Cornish Pirates on the opening day – but the standards now in place are such that much more is still expected. “It’s something we’ve got to look at, and something we’ve got to address, because it’s right for us to look at ourselves when we’ve got a good scoreline and we’ve got the five points,” said Robinson. “We’ve improved since what we did against Cornish Pirates, but at times in that second half, Nottingham made it difficult for us to play. They stopped the momentum of the game, they put bodies around the ball, and we weren’t accurate enough. “That’s what teams are going to do against us – and we’ve got to be able to deal with it. If that happens in the first half, that’s maybe because you’re just getting used to the game. But if it happens in the second half, that’s where it becomes slightly disappointing.” On the plus side, there was yes-

terday’s first half. Bristol have made it clear they want to blow teams away in the opening stages – and they again backed up their words with a barnstorming start. The bonus point was safely banked within 33 minutes, with Nottingham pushed onto the back foot as Ruki Tipuna again inspired Bristol with a display of energy and innovation. Bristol’s high-tempo game-plan suits the scrum-half down to the ground – and he pulled the strings in broken play. An early Matthew Jarvis penalty proved little more than an inconvenience, as, when the visitors knocked on from the restart, George Watkins scored the first of his two tries. He went over after Tipuna and Marco Mama had combined from the scrum. Watkins, who is now behind only Sean Marsden and David Lemi when it comes to league tries for Bristol, added a second a few minutes later – and this time it owed everything to his own anticipation and reading of the game. The winger was in a perfect position to snaffle a pass from Jarvis, intended for one of the Nottingham fly-half ’s outside backs, but still had to race in from 45 metres to complete the score. Fewer than 60 seconds later, he was almost in for a second – pouncing to make another interception – but play was brought back for an earlier Bristol knock-on. Even though Tom Calladine hit back for Nottingham, going over when the visitors caught Bristol nap-

ping with a short line-out, Bristol’s response was urgent and devastating. From a close-range scrum, after Bristol had kicked a penalty to touch and then earned a second penalty, centre Ben Mosses went jinking to the line, to open up an eight-point lead for his side. That became 15 points when the quick-thinking of Tipuna and pace of Watkins led to Tristan Roberts diving over to seal the bonus point. Nottingham lost prop Campese Ma’afu to the sin-bin – and then, shortly after half-time, shipped a fifth try when Roberts struck again. But Martin Haag’s side, despite lacking the overall quality they had last season, showed they are not bereft of fight and character as they came back into the game. The result was never in doubt once Roberts had crossed for the bonus-point-clincher – but the stamp of complete control Bristol had been threatening to put on the game did not materialise either. Nottingham gnawed away at the Bristol line for five minutes, winning a series of penalties and line-outs, before replacement Alex Shaw – with his first touch – burrowed over. Even at that stage, there remained 16 minutes plus stoppage time – but the closing stages were unusually uneventful, leaving Robinson frustrated, albeit in a much different way to how he had been against Pirates back in early September. That alone is a mark of Bristol’s progress since – even if much more remains expected of them.

Bristol make a strong start to the second half, with Roberts going over for his second try of the match – 33-11

64

After a lengthy spell of pressure, Nottingham rumble over for a try with replacement Alex Shaw scoring with his first touch – 33-18

BRISTOL wrapped up a try-scoring bonus point inside 33 minutes at the Memorial Stadium – and their biggest frustration was that they only added one more try after that. The home side were rampant in the opening stages, with George Watkins crossing twice, Ben Mosses going over and Tristan Roberts also scoring as they effectively sealed their fourth straight bonus-point win in the GKIPA Championship before half-time. The early exchanges were fierce, with James Merriman recovering from a heavy hit in the first minute to play a key role in the match. It was the backs, however, who scored the tries for Bristol. Matthew Jarvis kicked Nottingham into a

fifth-minute lead, but Bristol replied when, from the restart, the visitors knocked on in their own 22. From the scrum, Ruki Tipuna and Marco Mama combined to send winger Watkins to the line. Nottingham had several chances in the opening stages – but were let down by some poor handling. Bristol soon punished their visitors’ wastefulness when Watkins intercepted a pass from Jarvis and raced in from 45 metres to score, giving the opposition fly-half no chance of catching him. Roberts converted to give Bristol a 14-3 lead – which became 14-6 on 23 minutes when Jarvis knocked over a second successful penalty of the match.

Nottingham then pegged Bristol back even further when they caught them out via a short line-out. Hooker Jon Vickers hit Neilus Keogh at the front of the line-out – and he darted down the left wing before finding Tom Calladine, who scored. Bristol hit back twice before half-time, though. A deliberate knock-on set up a spell of dominance for Bristol, which ended with centre Mosses jinking his way to the line after smart work from Tipuna at the base of a five-metre scrum. Roberts sealed the bonus point on 33 minutes – but his score owed plenty to Tipuna and Watkins. The scrum-half found the winger with an improvised behind-the-back pass, and, when Watkins was stopped

W:11.3939cm short and released aH:5.6936cm similar pass, both Mama and Roberts were in support. The fly-half was the one who gathered and touched down. Nottingham lost prop Campese Ma’afu to the sin-bin for persistently infringing, and, five minutes into the second half, Roberts capped another strong Bristol move to score again, converting his own try to see them into a 33-11 lead. From that point, the game became rather flat, with a number of errors breaking Bristol’s rhythm. Indeed, the only score in the final 35 minutes came from Nottingham replacement Alex Shaw, who capped a sustained spell of pressure from the visitors by scoring from close range.

Calor Southern League

Lenihan wins it for Yate with stoppage-time goal Yate Town

Thatcham Town

HEAVY pressure during the second half finally paid off when Yate grabbed a stoppage-time winner through Martin Lenihan in this Calor League Division One South & West game. After a mediocre first half, it was Thatcham who went in front on the hour-mark when Tom Gooding

scored at the far post. Yate equalised in the 65th minute when a fierce shot from Jake Cox was not held by Thatcham goalkeeper Aaron Carter and Lewis Haldane scored from the rebound. Jordan Rogers then headed over the crossbar as Yate pressed for the winner. It finally arrived when Lenihan hammered the ball home after Carter had failed to deal with a cross from Cox. It gave Yate their fourth league win of the season and lifted Rob Cousins' team up to 11th in the table.

Clevedon Town

5

ROSS McNab hit a hat-trick as Clevedon Town gained a stunning win at Bishop’s Cleeve to move up to 19th in the Calor League Division One South & West table. Clevedon’s first real chance came on the half-hour when an Ollie Barnes free-kick from 25 yards out was parried by Louie Barnfather in the home goal and cleared away. Three minutes later, Clevedon took the lead when good play between Joe Flurry and Adie Adam down the left flank got the ball to Ollie Barnes, whose cross was finished off by MacNab. Clevedon went two up shortly before half-time when MacNab nodded

a free-kick back to Matt Thorne, whose shot from just inside the penalty area found the net. On 47 minutes, Andy Venning brought a good save out of Clevedon’s Danny Greaves. However, on 66 minutes, the home side were reduced to ten men when Alex Hoyle was sent off after bringing down McNab in the penalty area. Thorne fired home the spot-kick to make it 3-0. Four minutes later, Louis Feely made a good run down the left wing and his cross was finished off by MacNab. Ibz Diallo, Issac Reid and Thorne all went close to scoring for Clevedon, before another goal arrived in 89th minute. Thorne chipped the ball over the defence for McNab to run on to, and he touched it past the goalkeeper before tapping it into the net.

Paulton move up to second Paulton Rovers

3

Cinderford Town

1

PAULTON claimed a hard-fought victory to move up to second in the Calor League Division One South & West table. Paulton dominated the first half, but had to wait until the 43rd minute to take the lead. Brandon Barnes’ cross was handled by Andy Lewis, and Nick McCootie, playing against his former club, tucked away the penalty. It became 2-0 in the 48th minute

when Mike Perrott scored following good work from Josh Klein-Davies. Cinderford’s Kieran Thomas had a shot blocked by Paulton’s Mike Reaney, before the home side made it 3-0 in the 61st minute. Player-coach Josh Jeffries laid the ball off to Barnes, who cut in from the left and found McCootie. He took the ball to the byline and cut it back for Klein-Davies to rifle the ball past Cinderford goalkeeper Alex Harris. The visitors pulled a goal back when Lewis Sommers slipped the ball through to Thomas, who fired his shot past Kyle Phillips and into the net.

FA Cup | Fourth qualifying round

I’m so proud of my players, says boss Meacham Brislington

0

Welling United

1

Mark Easterbrook mark.easterbrook @b-nm.co.uk

FOR 67 minutes, Brislington’s players dared to dream of reaching the FA Cup first round for the first time in the club’s history. But then a miscued punch from otherwise immaculate goalkeeper Chris Humphries was nodded into the net from a few yards out by Welling’s Lee Clarke and the dreams began to fade. Nevertheless, Jeff Meacham’s side continued to defy the four-division gap in status between the sides and came close to putting their name in the hat for the first round draw when right-back Tom Godsell swivelled in the penalty area and caught his 82nd-minute, left-foot volley sweetly, but unfortunately for Brislington, it went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Luke Butcher. Few would argue that Welling deserved their win, but only just. Brislington’s defensive discipline and hard graft was such that a side standing ninth in the Conference Premier were restricted to a handful of chances. Much of the credit for that must go to an excellent back-four, with skipper Jason Hughes a commanding presence at centre-back. Mike Rimmer showed good composure on the ball in the a deep-lying central midfield role, while substitute Omari Simms impressed out wide after replacing hamstring-victim Alex Lambert. In the end, Brislington couldn’t pull off another upset, to go alongside the wins over Truro and Weston-super-Mare in the previous rounds, but Meacham was under-

standably proud of his side’s perfor mance. “I was very pleased and proud about the way the lads went about it,” said the former Bristol Rovers striker. “To play a team that are four leagues above us and to give them a real scare, and the way we went about it, was very good. “We were a little unfortunate with the goal, but we could have pinched one at the end. Tom Godsall caught his volley a little too well, if anything. I also thought the free-kick that led to their goal was a little harsh. The ball’s been blasted at our player and it’s hit his hand, but he didn’t stick his hand out.” Brislington’s fans in a club-record attendance of 700-strong played their part in creating a good atmosphere at Ironmould Lane, although the throwing of four flares on to the pitch in the second half took enthusiasm for the occasion a tad too far. Welling had lots of corners in the first half, but all of them were well defended by the hosts. The nearest the visitors came to scoring in the first 45 minutes was when centre-half Blaine Hudson fired a shot just over the crossbar, while on a couple of other occasions, Brislington were indebted to goal-saving tackles from Danny Barwood and Hughes. At the other end, Brislington’s only clear opening fell to Frank Gingell, whose shot was blocked by a defender. Humphries saved well from Jake Gallagher’s low shot early in the second half, and Brislington did their best to try to summon up an equaliser after the visitors had taken the lead. Simms had a shot comfortably saved, then Gingell fired wide from 25 yards and Godsall saw his volley saved. Brislington had enjoyed stoppage-time winners in the previous two rounds, but there was no fairytale ending this time. Josh Dyer’s 20-yard drive, which went a few yards wide, was as close as they came. But while there will have been a

● Brislington’s Frank Gingell (red and black sh tinge of disappointment at missing out on the first round, Brislington’s players can reflect on a cup run that has provided them with some great memories and the club with a financial boost. Tomorrow, though, it will be back to Toolstation League Premier Division business with the visit of Hallen to Ironmould Lane. “They’ll be about 33 people here for that one,” said Meacham, “but the fans know our level of football and they’ll enjoy that one as well.” Brislington: Humphries, Godsall, Hughes, Barwood, Peters, Rimmer, Gifford, Peart (Dyer, 77 mins), Gingell, Meacham (Charles, 86 mins), Lambert (Simms, 15 mins). Welling: Butcher, Fazakerley, Hudson, Franks, Oberstellar, Gallagher (Guthrie, 83 mins), Clarke, Day, Healy, Hughes-Mason, Pires.

Shirehampton edge out Nailsea

EPB-E01-S3

SHIREHAMPTON moved up to third in the Premier Division table with a 3-2 home win against Nailsea Town. Scott Bamford gave Shirehampton a 14th-minute lead, but Matt Pilgrim levelled soon after and scored his second a couple of minutes after half-time. Bamford equalised for Shirehampton on the hour-mark, and Kyle O'Donovan headed in Tony Beacham's free-kick on 79 minutes to win it for the hosts. Fry Club are in sixth place following an impressive 2-1 win at Minehead. Paul Worlock put Fry's ahead just before the break and a penalty

from Matthew Brown early in the second half made it 2-0, before Jack Groves-Furse pulled a goal back. Second-placed Stockwood Green won 2-1 at Bishops Lydeard, while Cutters Friday continued their improved form with a 6-1 win at bottom-of-the-table Odd Down Reserves. Berrow triumphed 5-3 at Weston St Johns, but Yatton went down 2-1 at Watchet Town. Premier Division leaders Nailsea United eased into the next round of the Premier/First Division Cup with a 6-1 home victory against Purnell Sports. Clutton also won through with a 4-1 win at home to Bridgwater Town Reserves.

Mangotsfield United

MANGOTSFIELD recorded a third successive away win as they ended Bridgwater’s unbeaten league record with an impressive showing at Fairfax Park. Mangotsfield took a second-minute lead when Tom Parrinello swung in a free-kick to the back post, where Matt Sysum guided a header back across

goal and into the bottom right corner of the net. After Ben Hunt went close to scoring for Mangotsfield on a couple of occasions, the visitors extended their advantage in the 41st minute. The ball was worked wide to Ryan Bath on the right flank and his cross was headed low into the net by Hunt. Bridgwater nearly pulled a goal back just before half-time, but Kevin Sawyer did well to tip a free-kick from Aaron Robbins over the crossbar. Bridgwater had an opportunity to

reduce the arrears six minutes into the second half when Mitchell Page latched on to a high ball over the Mangotsfield defence, but he lifted his shot wide of the left-hand upright. Kyle Tooze fired a shot over the crossbar for Mangotsfield, but victory was secured with a third goal on 83 minutes. Hunt poked the ball home from eight yards, via the aid of a deflection, after a mix up between home goalkeeper Chris Wright and right-back Kristian Miller.

A THUMPING Theo Lewis header two minutes before half-time was enough for Salisbury City to end Bath’s hopes of progressing to the first round of the FA Cup. The hosts perhaps paid the price for giving too much respect to the Conference Premier side, with the starting XI looking set up to play a containing game rather than take the tie to their visitors. Salisbury forward Dan Fitchett had a sight of goal in the third minute, but the striker’s angled drive flew past the near post. The first goal almost arrived just before the half-hour mark when Fitchett managed to get to the byline and chip the ball back towards midfielder Clovis Kamdjo, who rattled a header against the bar from six yards. There was a lucky escape for home goalkeeper Jason Mellor a couple of minutes later when he started to go for an Elliott Frear corner, but then changed his mind and was relieved to see the ball fly across the box without anyone getting a touch. But Mellor was beaten a couple of minutes before half-time when Lewis powered a close-range header into the net from Frear’s looping cross. It was a blow to the hosts, who needed a bright start to the second half. Andy Watkins almost provided it following a quick break by Sekani Simpson, but the striker’s well-hit shot was straight at former Bath goalkeeper Will Puddy. Watkins was replaced by Elliott Chamberlain in the 56th minute and Ross Stearn was introduced for Chris Allen just after the hour. The visitors had a chance to double their lead when Lewis had a shot blocked by Dan Ball, but cleverly back-heeled the rebound to Chris McPhee, who showed rather less composure as he blazed his angled drive over the bar. Bath’s final change was to send on youngster Dan Bowman for Simpson with ten minutes to go. However, the hosts were still struggling to create clear-cut chances, although Puddy was forced into a low save by Adelsbury’s strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Dowdell bags the winner as Winterbourne knock Bradford out of the cup of the cup by Odd Down, who triumphed 3-2 on penalties at Shellards Road following a goalless draw. Andy Hamilton-Brown scored for Roman Glass St George in a 6-1 defeat at Buckland Athletic, whose goals came from Mike Booth, who scored a hat-trick of headers, Simon Revell, Gavin Hammonand Liam Drew. In the Premier Division, Larkhall Athletic went six points clear at the top with a 5-0 home win against Hengrove Athletic, thanks to second-half goals from Tyler Sibbick (3), Nat Auckland and Jamie Lyons.

Cadbury Heath bounced back from their Vase defeat to Hallen with an impressive 4-0 victory at Radstock. Two goals from Sam Winfield and one from Matt Huxley put Heath 3-0 up in half-an-hour, and Leon Bentley added the fourth late in the game. Bristol Manor Farm moved up to sixth on the back of a 1-0 home win against third-placed Street. The decisive goal came in the 85th minute when Pete Sheppard volleyed in a cross from Jordan Metters. Tom Collett gave Hallen the lead at Bitton just after the hour-mark, but

the home side levelled in the closing stages through Craig Wilson. Bishop Sutton battled well at Willand Rovers, but went down 1-0 after David Steele scored a penalty early in the second half. In the First Division, bottom-of-the-table Keynsham Town gave an improved performance to draw 2-2 at home to Devizes Town. Keynsham trailed 2-0 at the break and it stayed that way until the closing ten minutes, when strikes from Pat Davidson and Seb Spiller earned the hosts a point.

There was also a 2-2 draw at Chard Town, who had a player sent off midway through the first half against Almondsbury UWE. Simon McElroy netted twice for the visitors. Ashton & Backwell took a sixth-minute lead through Lee Delaney at home to Oldland Abbotonians, who equalised through Ali Bamford in the second half. Promotion-chasing Cribbs went one down to a 33rd-minute Francis Rolli strike at Wells City, but Dave Gilroy equalised soon after to earn Cribbs a point.

WINTERBOURNE United, struggling in the Premier Division, pulled off an impressive 4-3 win at Bradford Town, the runaway First Division leaders, in the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup. Winterbourne were trailing 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining, but goals from Karim Rendell and Ben Dowdell sent them into the next round. Earlier, Ash Knight had struck twice for Winterbourne, while Bradford's goals came from Josh Bringham, Dan King and Sam Jordan. Longwell Green were knocked out

Weston undone in second half by clinical finishing Weston-super-Mare

Hayes & Yeading

WESTON were given a lesson in clinical finishing by three second-half substitutes who played a part in all three goals of an entertaining Skrill South game. The home side gave a debut to new signing Bradley Middleton, who slotted in well to the defence in place of suspended Jamie Laird. The Seagulls made a bright start, with Ashley Kington going close in the first minute and Chas Hemmings’ having a deflected effort on 12 minutes brilliantly turned over his crossbar by goalkeeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz. Later, Hemmings went close on two more occasions, as did Dayle Grubb, while Martin Slocombe had a dangerous low cross cut out by the goalkeeper. The introduction of former Bath

City, Salisbury and Newport County striker Tom Bird for Hayes & Yeading changed the game. Bird’s pass put Reid through in the 52nd minute, and he rounded goalkeeper Luke Purnell to put the visitors ahead. As Weston tried to get back into the game, Naby Diallo forced a full-length save from Jaimez-Ruiz and Kington had a good effort beaten out by the goalkeeper. However, Hayes struck again on 67 minutes when Luke Williams outpaced the defence to fire past Purnell. Three minutes from time, Reid struck again, turning susbstitute Allen Bossman’s low cross past Purnell from a couple of yards. ● Tytherington Rocks inflicted a second knockout competition defeat on Highmoor this season with a 4-2 away win in the Hellenic League’s Bluefin Sports Cup second round. After a goalless first half, strikes from Tom Andrews (2), Justin Bishop and Luke Sperring gave Rocks victory.

Danny strikes twice in Thornbury’s first victory THORNBURY Town gained their first win of the season with a 4-1 success at home to Bristol Academy. Danny Thompson gave Thornbury a 15th-minute lead, and it stayed that way until Tyler Finch-Vassell equalised in the second minute of the second half. However, Thompson restored Thor nbury’s lead with a 50th-minute goal, and he set up Luke Franklin for the third goal a minute later. The home side rounded the scoring off in time added-on with a great strike from young substitute Josh Pirie. Henbury found themselves trail-

ing 3-0 after 30 minutes in their home game against Hanham Athletic, whose goals came from Jack Tottle, James Shipman and Tolo Taylor. Henbury’s woes were compounded by a 25th-minute penalty miss from Aaron Anglin. However, Henbury did manage to set up a tense finish with goals from Gary Clarke and Ben Sandle, but Hanham held on for victory. Rockleaze Rangers went down 2-1 at home to Bishop’s Cleeve Reserves. A looping header from Theo Coombs gave Rockleaze a 36th-minute lead, but James Pickup levelled before half-time and scored the winner in the second period.

Telephones were kept at bay by some good goalkeeping from James Kaminski. Southmead Athletic went down to a 2-1 defeat at Ellwood, who took a second-minute lead through Daryl Addis. Danny Glancy levelled in the 80th minute, but Addis grabbed the winner in the 89th minute.

Columnist

It’s always good to hear a funny football chant, isn’t it Graham?

EPB-E01-S3

I

WAS driving along the other day listening to a sports station on the radio, where the topic for listeners to phone in on was football supporters’ chants. The presenter of the show wanted humorous stories relating to this subject, and he was soon inundated with telephone calls. The first chap to get through relayed his experience of a non-League match he had attended that previous Saturday. There were only a few hundred supporters at the game, so any chanting by the fans was easy to hear. He explained that the away goalkeeper, protecting the goal directly in front of where the home mob gathered, was the object of the fans’

Dave Payne Writes for the Green ’Un cutting chants. The goalkeeper was, by all accounts, a little on the tubby side, and has probably had to endure a fair amount of abuse down the years. The chant, though, that was aimed at him must have brought a smile to even his face. It went, “There’s only two James Cordens, two James Cordens!” There have been some classic funny

chants I have heard down the years, many though are not suitable to use in this column (they are too funny). One chant which I heard while watching Liverpool play on the television a couple of seasons ago made me chuckle. It went “He’s big, he’s red, his feet stick out the bed – Peter Crouch!” I was tempted to call the show myself, and relay a comment that was shouted to one of my team-mates by a supporter during my spell at Bath City. We were defending a corner during this particular game, when a loud-mouthed supporter of our opponents shouted out “Oi, number six”. I was standing near the goal-post,

and knew it wasn’t me he was yelling at, because I wore the number ten shirt (like most of the best players do!), so I glanced around to see which one of our players was wearing number six. It was our very experienced former Bristol Rovers defender Graham Day. This supporter repeated the shout a few times, adding, “Turn around, number six”. Graham, like the old pro he was, totally ignored the remarks. However, the chap in question was not one to give up easily, and the words he used next to get Graham’s attention are ones that every one of our players will never let Graham forget. At the top of his voice the frustrated supporter bellowed, “Oi, number six,

mattress face!” None of us could keep a straight face because, believe it or not, Graham’s face did kind of resemble a mattress! As you can imagine, the moment we all got on our coach for the journey home, we burst into song, “There’s only one mattress face, only one mattress face!” Staying on the subject of radio, I was tuned into one of the local stations this week, when the host of the show announced that the pop group One Direction were hoping to play in Bristol. Within minutes, both City head coach Sean O’Driscoll and Rovers boss John Ward contacted the show and stated that they would definitely settle for a point!
