MANY people think that winter tyres are only good for the occasions when the roads are covered with snow and ice.

But modern tyre development means that the latest products are much more versatile.

In many other European countries it is common for drivers to fit cold-weather tyres in late autumn and revert to summer tyres in the late spring. So why is this not the case in the UK? The perception that winter tyres only give benefits on snow or ice is years out of date.

Modern rubber-compound technology and advances in tread-pattern design mean winter tyres now provide higher levels of road safety on cold and damp road surfaces too.

Tyre technology is now at a very advanced level. New vehicle con-

cepts, combined with tyres adapted to requirements, have made driving safer today.

The benefits are persuasive – increased mileage performance, less weight, reduced rolling resistance and shorter braking distances on wet and dry roads.

Drivers are five times more likely to skid in snowy or icy road conditions than they are on dry roads, while the number of accidents caused by wet road conditions increases significantly during the winter months.

Despite the fact that 60 per cent of people feel scared or uneasy when driving in winter conditions, 75 per cent of these same people would not consider fitting winter tyres.

It seems crazy, especially when you realise that the latest winter tyres generally outlast conventional summer tyres by many thousands of miles.

So it cannot be purely a financial consideration.

Many car manufacturers, through their dealerships and tyre centres, are now actively promoting the use of winter tyres.

They are even offering to store the set you are not using free of charge until you want them refitted.

It seems the industry and Britain’s motorists are finally starting to wake up to the benefits of changing tyres to match the seasons’ varying weather conditions.

At last, Caterham rides into the world of motorcycle production ● CATERHAM Group has launched its first motorcycle division – Caterham Bikes.

Three prototype products – the Brutus 750 (dubbed the SUV of motorcycles), Classic e-bike (an all-electric bike with retro styling) and the Carbon e-bike (a premium electric bike inspired by F1 technology) were unveiled at the Milan Motor Show.

The iconic Caterham Seven sportscar is referred to as the closest experience to motorcycle riding on four wheels. So this move, the brand’s first foray into

road bikes, is a natural step. The two-wheeled division joins Caterham F1 Team, Caterham Racing (GP2), Caterham Technology and Innovation, Caterham Composites and the latest arm, Caterham Moto Racing Team.

The new bikes will also adhere to the brand’s ethos of delivering “accessible fun”. Production of the three launch bikes will begin next spring. The Brutus 750 will be the first to be built, with the two electric bikes going into production later in 2014.

Needy kids drive pair’s rally bid

OR the second time, local businessman Aaron Banks will be taking part in the East African Safari Classic Rally, which has been described as “the most exacting test for man and machine yet devised in the world of rallying”.

The co-owner of Old Down Manor in Tockington will be heading to Kenya this month with his co-driver, consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon Tim Chesser who is from Bristol. They will be competing in a heavily-modified Ford Escort.

Through their efforts, Aaron is hoping to raise £100,000 for Sentabale, a charity which reaches Lesotho’s most needy and vulnerable children, many of whom are the victims of extreme poverty and their country’s HIV/Aids epidemic. A gala dinner at Old Down Manor, a wedding and events centre, raised £60,000.

Though Aaron has no background in motorsport of any kind, he took part in the rally two years ago with Tim and is ready for the challenge once more.

He said: “The East African Rally is a mix of gruelling conditions and 100km/h average speeds through sparsely-populated country unrivalled elsewhere in the world.

“The race is restricted to classic cars, built before 1974.

“The rally has long sections and limited back-up and service crews, just like in the early days.”

“I will be out there in the dirt and danger and you can follow me on my blog and support this really worthy cause from the comfort of your home.”

The rally runs from November 21 to 29.

So, a wacky solution was required.

In response, the child in me dug a den into the brain of my eight-year-old self and emerged with what I can only describe as a splat gun of the sort much-used in the child-acted film Bugsy Malone.

Think paintballing, except that along with copious quantities of brightly-coloured goo, said gun subsequently delivered a larger sticker with the word “IDIOT!” splatted in capital letters. In my fantasy world, everyone with one of these stickers would be whisked off the M4 by Mr Plod sharpish.

Little me and my driver companion had a fun half hour aiming the imaginary gun at all the idiots on the M4 that evening. We lost count after a while.

FEW weeks ago in this column I mentioned that I had seen a personalised number plate that read M4 YUK. And last Friday night the M4 certainly was.

Handy though that motorway is for reaching deep into Wales, between 4pm and 7pm it was thoroughly unpleasant until well beyond Port Talbot.

What with queue jumping, lane switching, lane hogging and tail gating, which causes such an unnecessary concertina-effect jam, I was pretty annoyed – and I was not even driving.

Though catching a ride in a helicopter would have been an uplifting experience in more ways than one, I tend to live in the real world – so we had no choice but to suffer the consequences of commuterville.

Something was needed to fill the time and remove some of the abject frustration.
