Dash cams help fight ‘crash for cash’ claims ● A MOTORING retailer has started stocking in-car cameras in response to the growing problem of “crash for cash” fraud claims. Halfords is now selling the devices, known as dash cams, which record the view through the windscreen and capture events before, during and after a collision. The recorded footage can also be used by defendants against accusations of lane-hogging or tailgating on motorways following new fixed penalty legislation which came into force in August. The Insurance Fraud Bureau estimates around 30,000 crash for cash incidents take place every year, costing insurers around £350 million and pushing up premiums for honest, innocent drivers by around £44 each.

have pretty much seen it all, but I’m still enjoying the work and am as enthusiastic about Mercedes-Benz today as I was when I first experienced the brand. It’s still the best and there’s no other car manufacturer for me – it gets into your blood!” In recognition of his huge contribution and commitment to Mercedes-Benz of Bristol, Andy was presented with £1,000 in high street vouchers by Mike Smith, Dealer Principal of Mercedes-Benz of Bristol. “Andy has always worked hard in a variety of roles over the past 40 years and his inherent skills, friendliness and politeness have made him a pleasure to deal with, for customers and colleagues alike,” said Mike. “He has shown huge dedication, commitment and passion, and Andy is meticulous in his organisation – he always completes tasks as if it were his first day in the company! “From all of us at Mercedes-Benz of Bristol, we would like to say a big thank you to Andy!”

Bristol. Classic car enthusiast Andy Moores began work on September 17, 1973, joining Cruickshank Motors at Kensington Place, Clifton, which became Mercedes-Benz of Bristol a decade later. Andy’s extensive knowledge and people skills lead to him moving out of the workshop and into managerial and customer-facing roles, including as service advisor, body shop manager and service manager. He has been in his current role as warranty claims administrator for the last 10 years, the last seven of which have been at the state-of-the-art, Cribbs Causeway facility that Mercedes-Benz of Bristol moved to in 2007. “I’ve seen some dramatic changes in the industry and the cars,” said Andy, who has backed up his passion for the brand by buying his own 1995 SL 320 sports car and recently acquiring an ML 320 CDI. Andy continued: “I’ve been through six or seven site moves and

● WHY I should think that aggressive driving is confined only to peak commuting periods I do not know. I was shaken from this nonsensical persuasion fairly late one evening last week while journeying between Bradley Stoke and Staple Hill, via Hambrook and the ring road. Most of Bradley Stoke is a 30mph zone, which a great many drivers seem inclined to ignore. Some, including a particular silver Golf estate driver, also want to remind all other road users that they consider said speed limit to be incredibly annoying. His exasperation manifested itself quite obviously. He zoomed up so close to my rear end that I lost sight of his headlights. There

he stayed for what seemed like an eternity until he was forced to admit that on-coming traffic meant there was no hope of overtaking. But he did not drop back to a sensible distance – he was still too close for comfort. At the first opportunity, he swerved to my outside and back again while we approached the Hambrook junction with the ring road, just in case I had not noticed he was in a tearing hurry.

As the traffic lights turned green in our favour, he floored it and overtook on the dual carriageway towards Downend in a cloud of non-too-pleasant fumes. Great, I thought, good riddance. Unfortunately, he was heading my way at the next roundabout and was further enraged – I noticed the clenched-jaw glances – when a red light meant he had to suffer my presence next to him again while we waited for green.

Unable to bear the idea that he could not get ahead of me, the Golf driver ignored the red light and began to crawl forward until he was perhaps a car length ahead. Somehow I believe he thought this would raise my hackles. Not a bit. I would be glad to get rid of him. So, as green appeared and he shot off at high revs, high speed and, no doubt, high blood pressure, I continued my merry way and soon turned off and away. The last I saw, the Golf driver was being held up by some other law-abiding driver. That raised a small smile. ● What drives you to distraction on Bristol’s roads? MILESTONES TT calendar is back, with more wittily-illustrated TT anecdotes. Milestones made its debut last year, after artist and journalist Rachael Clegg decided that making a TT calendar was her calling in life. Together with Al Jazeera photojournalist Peter Greste and assistant Shaz Nicol, Rachael created a calendar that paid visual homage to some of the most significant and quirky events in TT history. The result is 15 leaves of unusual monochrome images. The calendar is a fusion of Rachael’s background, obsession with history and her family’s racing legacy. The calendar, available from www.milestonescalendar.com, costs £15.

Range Rover Sport

Test drive The most exciting SUV in years If you thought the Range Rover Sport was just a Discovery in posh togs, you need to take a look at this latest generation model. It’s something quite special as Andy Enright reports.

T

HE formula for the first generation Range Rover Sport was simple. Take a Land Rover Discovery, drape it in Range Rover lookalike body panels, tack quite a bit on to the asking price and watch the orders roll in. And roll in they did. Introduced back in 2005 and weathering the worst years of the recession, 2012 was its second best year for sales, so the formula was clearly working. So what has Land Rover done with its replacement? Completely changed the fundamentals, that’s what. There are definite hints of the Evoque about its glasshouse and the styling is more muscular and athletic than before, with a more fashionable wheel-at-each-corner stance. Designer Gerry McGovern calls this generation Sport the “Porsche 911 of SUVs” because of its superior handling prowess. If you wanted a sharp steer from your sports utility vehicle, you were always better off choosing a Porsche Cayenne or a BMW X5. This time round, Land Rover has really pulled out all the stops. Shaving more than 400kg off the weight is obviously going to be a massive advantage. More focused air suspension provides up to 115mm of regular movement, from the lowest 50mm

setting to the standard off-road height. The +35mm intermediate setting means that the off-road mode can remain available at much higher speeds (80km/h up from 50km/h) than was possible before, which is valuable in terrain with long, rutted dirt roads. The electric power steering offers a lighter feel and a choice of two full-time 4WD systems is offered. One set-up will suit the minority of owners who’ll be venturing off road, providing a two-speed transfer case with low-range option, plus a front/rear 50/50 percent default torque split and 100 percent locking capability. The other system is designed for those whose off piste use of this car will be slight. Here, the 4x4 layout features a single-speed transfer case with a Torsen differential. In this case, a default front-rear

torque split of 42/58 percent is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum road driving dynamics. Engines? You get a choice of two – a supercharged 5.0-litre 510PS V8 petrol unit and a 3.0-litre 292PS SDV6 diesel. You can also talk to your dealer about a 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6, a high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel engine and a diesel Hybrid model. All petrol and diesel engines in the Range Rover Sport are paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. There’s nothing too surprising about the Range Rover Sport’s appearance. It’s good looking, neatly detailed, very eye-catching and a significantly longer wheelbase than before (up by 178mm) provides much more room inside. The wheelbase isn’t that far off a full-fat Range Rover but shorter over-

hangs at the front and rear, a more sharply raked windscreen and a sloping roofline distinguish this model. Buyers can choose from 19, 20, 21 or 22-inch alloy wheels. The Sport’s interior features typically Land Rover strong, architectural shapes, this time mixed with even cleaner surface treatments, finished with soft-touch surfaces. The sporting cues come courtesy of

THE RIVALS Mercedes GL Class

BMW X5

Porsche Cayenne

● Some Mercedes models are the epitome of on-road luxury. Others are almost unrivalled for off-road prowess. And then there’s one which claims to offer the best of both: the GL-Class. This is one of the very few superluxury SUVs that can seat seven adults. Price: £58,935-£73,155 0-60 mph: 6.5-7.9 Max speed: 140-149 Co2 (g/km): 242 Combined mpg: 20.8-30.7

● The X5 is the 4x4 that never put a foot wrong. Think about it. There’s never been a weak model, much less a bad generation. This third iteration on the theme improves efficiency, practicality and responsiveness and you wouldn’t expect anything less really. It’s all change but business as usual. Price: £47,895-£63,920 CO2 emissions: 162-244g/km 0-62mph: 6.9s Max speed: 155mph Fuel consumption: 45.6mpg

● The Cayenne’s task is looking tougher than it did in 2002. Porsche now has the Panamera offering an alternative kind of four-door practicality. In the UK, luxury 4x4s have taken criticism for their perceived environmental costs. Porsche’s solution was to improve the car across the board. Price: £47,390-£89,324 0-62 mph: 4.7-7.6 Max speed: 137-173 Co2 (g/km): 189-270 Combined mpg: 24.6-39.2

a smaller, thicker-rimmed steering wheel and deeply bolstered seats with a lower hip point than you might expect. A neatly integrated third row, occasional 5+2 seating package can be specified. These powered seats leave a flat floor with no loss of boot space and are split 50/50. Value is a tough judgment to make on this one. The Range Rover has marched inexorably upmarket and Land Rover could have been excused for making the Sport commensurately more expensive, but prices for the SDV6 models range in the £60,000 to £75,000 bracket and the TDV6 will make entry to Range Rover Sport ownership a little more accessible with its asking price of just over £50,000. The Supercharged Autobiography, with its 5.0-litre petrol V8 tops the range priced at just over £80,000, just over £5,000 more than the outgoing car. No premium car can do without an integrated connectivity package these days and Land Rover’s Connected technology allows the driver to check the status of the vehicle via an app installed on their smartphone and also provides support features such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Emergency Call and Land Rover Assist Call. A high bandwidth wi-fi hotspot can be installed in the vehicle so that passengers can use the internet and get the best data connection for their smartphones or tablets. Other technical highlights include an optional colour head-up display, a digital camera system which supports Lane Departure Warning,

Haggle your way towards a bargain price for your car HAGGLING over the price of a car is an essential skill that could save you a lot of money. Brits are characterised as poor hagglers, so here are a few tips to help you become an effective negotiator and clinch a great deal

✔ Know the market – Find out what similar cars are going for, set your price and then negotiate to that point. Auction websites are a good source of pricing information. Start low - Let the seller negotiate you up to a price you’re both happy with.

● The Range Rover Sport - a high bandwidth wi-fi hotspot can be installed so passengers can use the internet and get the best data connection for smartphones or tablets

24 per cent and CO2 emissions start as low as 194g/km. Wait for the diesel hybrid model and that figure falls to 169g/km. Still, it’s worth remembering that any large SUV is going to shed a significant amount of its new value in depreciation. That the Range Rover Sport is a massively superior car to its predecessor is not up for debate. If you’re anything but the retiring type and want one of the most exciting SUVs we’ve seen for some time, the decision just got a whole lot easier.

you look like a serious buyer who’s ready to do a deal, a decent salesperson should respond. If you’re getting close to a deal, say that you’ll buy a particular car at a particular price – but only if they agree to that price there and then, and in writing.

✔ Don’t be ‘matey’ - A friendly atmosphere could lull you into thinking you’re getting a great deal, when in fact the ‘mateyness’ is being used to ‘work’ you into a weaker position. Adopt a professional and detached approach, stay poker-faced, and keep calm. If

✔ Walk away - Don’t be afraid to leave if you can’t reach a deal that makes you happy. There’s always another car, always another deal. Never pay more for a car than you have to. Play the game – and play it to win.

Traffic Sign Recognition and Automatic High Beam Assist. A unique innovation on the Sport is the Wade Sensing feature that provides depth information when driving through water. When the very first Range Rover Sport was launched, buyers were faced with a choice; reasonable performance or reasonable economy. You couldn’t have both. How times have changed. Across the range, acceleration times for the 0-60mph dash start from five seconds, while fuel consumption is cut by up to

✔ Do your homework - Know exactly what it is you’re looking to buy and make sure you understand the terms and conditions of whatever warranty is included. Before you start negotiations, make sure you’re aware of what sort of discount the dealer is likely to offer and then compare it to the corresponding What Car? Target Price. Brokers, internet companies and car supermarkets also publish price information online. Timing - Many car industry sales targets are set on a monthly basis, so if you make your visit towards the end of the month, you will almost certainly find it easier to squeeze a good discount out of the dealer.

● SMALL Crossovers should be fun and fashionable but that doesn’t mean they can’t also be versatile, capable and practical too. Like Vauxhall’s little Mokka? Perhaps. Here’s the new face of this changing brand and it’s one you might very well find yourself growing to like. Price: £15,999-£23,699 0-60 mph: 9.3-11.9 Max speed: 106-120 Co2 (g/km): 120-158 Combined mpg: 41.5-62.8

● THE five-door Countryman has opened up the possibility of Mini ownership to buyers who find the smaller models too impractical. This crossover 4x4 has all the retro design cues that have underpinned Mini’s success. It has proved a surprise sales success since its launch here in 2010. There is now an uprated cabin, more efficient powerplants and a John Cooper Works firebrand model. Fiat goes all rugged with the Trekking A rugged Fiat 500? Has the world gone mad? Fiat doesn’t think so and believes the 500L Trekking more than justifies its existence. Andy Enright reports.

Verdict The chunky Fiat 500L is a larger and very different proposition to the hugely successful 500 city car it was spun from. Some felt though, that it could do with a bit more attitude. Such a thing is served up by the more rugged-looking Trekking version, a variant aiming to help this model begin to forge its own identity.

F

IAT’S 500 city car is one of the very best retro revivals, offering a modern take on a familiar shape, while blending exactly the right combination of old and new design features. In a bid to emulate what MINI had done in creating a family of cars spun off a familiar theme, Fiat created the 500L, a bigger and more spacious 500. That characteristic domed roof look was lost and the 500L looked like a generic mini-MPV that had some Fiat 500 design cues grafted on to it. As a result, sales have been slow to pick up. Beneath the hype, though, lies a very decent car and in beefed-up Trekking form, is a more self-confident take on the 500L theme. The Trekking gets the same engine choice as the rest of the 500L range, which means a 93bhp 1.4-litre petrol, while there’s also a version of the revolutionary two-cylinder TwinAir engine, in this case generating 104bhp, 20bhp up on the 500. Diesel customers are catered for with a very good 1.3-litre Multijet with 84bhp. This will make 60mph from standstill in 11.3 seconds. The key feature of the Trekking is its Traction +, Fiat’s clever traction control system that improves traction over harsh and slippery terrain. The Trekking aims to project a more dynamic image than the rather suburban 500L and as such, gets model-specific front and rear bumpers, side skirts and mouldings, air intakes, a skid-plate and standard fog lights. It’s offered in a choice of seven paint finishes, the sig-

nature colour being Hip Hop Yellow. The interior features fabric seat upholstery with eco-leather inserts. Customers can choose between two different combinations: magnesio grey fabric with brown leather inserts or black fabric with white inserts. As with the standard 500L, there’s a respectable amount of space inside. The big benefit indoors is a sliding rear seat system. Slide the seats forward and there’s still a reasonable amount of leg room. The 414-litre square boot features side cubbies, a three-position floor and pop-out bag holders. The rear seats can tumble forwards and the front passenger seat back can also fold flat. There are no specific trim levels offered with the 500L Trekking, so that makes the pricing relatively easy to get to grips with. The range opens at just over £17,000 for a 1.4 Trekking petrol, with diesel options kicking off at a tad over £18,500. This is the first car in the Fiat range to provide City Brake Control as standard. It is designed to reduce the effects of low-speed collision in traffic. By sending out laser impulses and registering how quickly they’re reflected, City Brake Control can detect remotely how far the car is from obstacles. This information is gathered by a sensor behind the windscreen which then transfers it to an electronic control unit for processing. If the control unit thinks the car is going to have a

9

collision and the driver isn’t doing anything to stop it, the brakes are applied. It operates at speeds between three and 19mph. The 500L Trekking’s good value upfront prices are matched by some very competitive economy and emissions figures. There have been some well publicised concerns about customer economy figures coming nowhere near the published numbers for the TwinAir engine, but the 1.3-Multijet diesel is a different kettle of fish. With a little moderation, you might get within sniffing distance of the official 62.8mpg figure. Its emissions are rated at 117g/km. Buyers also get the choice of a Dualogic transmission on this model which reduces emissions to just 105g/km and increases fuel economy to 70.6mpg. If funds are a little tighter, the entry-level 1.4 petrol units gets 45.6mpg and emits 145g/km. It’ll be a personal decision from there whether you see spending an additional £1,500 to get the TwinAir, with its claimed 58.9mpg and 112g/km as good value for money. The Trekking model distances itself from the original 500 city car and as such seems to justify its inclusion in the Fiat range a little more confidently. The mark-up of £700 over the standard 500L doesn’t seem at all unreasonable given the extra equipment. The 500L didn’t get off to the easiest start to life, but the Trekking would seem to suggest that this model is just hitting its stride.

Police data reveals worst car crime cities AN analysis of 515,248 UK police force records obtained by consumer motoring champion HonestJohn.co.uk has revealed that cities in the North of England are the worst affected by car crime, with Manchester topping the table. Bristol, with 255 car-related crimes per 10,000 vehicles, slots in at number 10 in the list. Between October 2011 and September 2012, 505 offences per 10,000 registered vehicles were reported in central Manchester. This figure is four times the national average for car crime, which HonestJohn.co.uk calculated as 121 offences per 10,000 vehicles. West Yorkshire emerged as another car crime hotspot, with Bradford seeing an average of 457 crimes per 10,000 vehicles, followed by Leeds with 420, Sheffield with 389, Newcastle with 318

and Liverpool with a rate of 287. London was third in the list, with a rate of 443 crimes per 10,000 vehicles. The research by HonestJohn.co.uk involved examining thousands of records released by 42 police forces, upon a Freedom of Information request in addition to data that’s available through police.uk. The HonestJohn.co.uk Car Crime Census 2013 allows motorists to find the car crime rate for their postcode. The data reveals that 41 per cent of all offences were based on theft from a vehicle, making it the most common type of car crime in the UK. The second most reported offence was criminal damage with 40 per cent of cars affected, followed by theft of a car at 16 per cent.

Risk-taking drivers putting lives at risk

O

VERCONFIDENCE and complacency is leading to widespread illegal risk-taking on roads, warns Brake, the road safety charity, and Direct Line. Research, published this month, shows that, while almost all drivers (99 per cent) believe they are comparatively safe, two thirds (69 per cent) admit putting others at risk by breaking traffic laws. As a result, the two organisations are urging drivers to sign Brake’s Pledge to help prevent the devastating crashes that often result from risky law-breaking at the wheel. Brake and Direct Line’s survey of 1,000 drivers across the UK has also found: ● More than two thirds (69 per cent) admit breaking traffic laws. ● A third (35 per cent) say they break laws

because they believe they can handle it, while another third (33 per cent) admit it’s down to not paying attention. ● Only one per cent say they know they’re taking risks, but do it anyway. Every day, five people are killed and 63 seriously injured on UK roads. The vast majority of crashes involve drivers’ risk-taking, and could be prevented if motorists stayed within speed limits, slowed for bends, bad weather and in built-up areas, did not use a phone at the wheel, and never drove on drink or drugs. Brake is also calling on government to ensure there is a strong deterrent against law-breaking, and that drivers who repeatedly flout the law are taken off the road. It wants greater priority and funding for specialist roads policing and action to tighten up the penalty points system so drivers who tot up 12 points or more can’t escape a ban by pleading “exceptional hardship”. Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, said: “It is deeply concerning so many drivers break vital traffic laws, yet still believe they are safe. “Anyone who thinks they can handle speeding, using a phone at the wheel or drink-driving is fooling themselves and taking an appalling chance with people’s lives. “Traffic laws exist to protect people from death and injury. “We are calling on drivers to make Brake’s Pledge to always drive safely and legally, to help reduce the number of people needlessly killed and hurt on our roads.”

British duo set new fastest trip to Cape Town

What drives us to road rage shown in study

A BRITISH team has set a new world record for driving from London to Cape Town, making the 10,000 mile journey in just 10 days, three hours and 16 minutes. Driving a British-made Land Rover Discovery, right, experienced endurance rally drivers Robert Belcher, 58, and Stephen Cooper, 53, broke the previous record, set in February 2013 by more than 10 hours. The pair arrived at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town – a landmark start and finish point for this journey – on Monday, October 14. They had left London at on Friday, October 4, from the RAC Club on Pall Mall. The attempt was sponsored by Warranty Direct and was raising money and awareness for charity Farm Africa (www.farmafrica.org). Donations can still be made through the website – www.londoncapetownrecord.co.uk. On the mammoth drive, the duo came up against heavy rain and thunderstorms in Tunisia, a tense border crossing into Libya, a fuel shortage in Egypt and giant potholes in Ethiopia. Their vehicle, a 2005 Land Rover Discovery 3 powered by a 2.7 TDV6 diesel engine, held up to a gruelling schedule of being driven almost 24 hours a day across a variety of terrain including hundreds of miles of bumpy and potholed dirt roads. Largely unmodified, the 4x4 had been given sump and undercarriage guards, chunkier tyres and four

CAR insurance provider Admiral has found that the main causes of road rage are being cut up by drivers (67 per cent), drivers not indicating (65 per cent) and the general rudeness of other motorists (61 per cent). Driving too slowly (43 per cent) is seen as more annoying than driving too fast (30 per cent). Nearly 1 in 10 (9 per cent) have been threatened with physical violence and over half (56 per cent) of drivers questioned agreed that road users are generally less courteous than five years ago. Of the 3,120 drivers questioned by YouGov for the Admiral Survey of UK Motorists, nearly half (48 per cent) admitted to experiencing road rage, with almost a third (32 per cent) of these saying they get it more than once a week. Over a fifth (21 per cent) of road rage sufferers have argued with another motorist because of road rage while 36 per cent admitted it makes them drive more aggressively. Almost one in ten (8 per cent) said they’ve followed another driver as a result. While both men and women get road rage, men are more likely to drive aggressively, have arguments, follow drivers and make offensive gestures as a result of their rage. Admiral spokesman, James Carnduff, said: “It’s bad enough letting yourself be annoyed by other road users, but following them or even worse, reverting to violence is ridiculous. Getting angry doesn’t achieve anything other than raising your blood pressure and negatively impacting your driving.”

high-intensity lamps mounted on the roof to better prepare it for the tough driving conditions. Extra fuel tanks also provided a range of around 1,200 miles between refuelling. Only one fault developed with the car during the trip. After hitting a bump in the road, the car’s brake warning light came on, accompanied by a continuous alar m. The fault was cleared after hitting another bump a few hours later. Driver Robert Belcher said: “What a journey. We’re exhausted but ab-

“ What a journey. We’re exhausted but absolutely elated to have broken the record and to have done it so safely and smoothly – if you don’t count the hundreds of miles of potholes through central Africa that is. Driver Robert Belcher

solutely elated to have broken the record and to have done it so safely and smoothly – if you don’t count the hundreds of miles of potholes through central Africa that is. “Despite the complexities of crossing so many borders we had relatively easy passage through each country and the friendly faces along the way made it all so worthwhile. “After seeing changing scenery like we have over the last ten days, and sometimes going hours without seeing another vehicle, I think we will both struggle returning to the morning commute!”
