V-Strom 1000 was inspired by the 1988 DR750S, Suzuki’s first big on-road/off-road machine. This machine is due to launch in 2014 and will offer customers the best of adventure motorcycling including versatility, fun, and comfort for long-distance travel.

How does it handle? SUZUKI has created a new traction-control system for the V-Strom 1000. agility. It features a twin-spar aluminium frame that helps to reduce the overall kerb mass to 228kg, which is 8kg lighter than the original V-Strom 1000 and makes it the lightest bike in the class. The new machine also boasts a 19in front wheel, which is now the preferred size in the adventure-bike sector, to provide agility as well as stability on and off the road. The radially-mounted front-brake calliper combined with Suzuki’s lightweight ABS system look to provide braking performance that matches the control of the new V-Strom’s power-delivery system.
Verdict THE 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS has a big task on its hands as it competes head on with the market leader in this class, the BMW R1200GS. The BMW is the natural choice in this sector, meaning it is difficult for competitors to make a serious impact. But this new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS should not be overlooked as it has much to recommend it, both in appearance and technical content. If the handling characteristics match Suzuki’s ambitions, then BMW may have something to worry about. The V-Strom’s price will not do it any harm either.

New adventure is under way
C
CM is set to reveal the production-ready GP450 Adventure at this year’s Motorcycle Live event at the NEC, Birmingham. Designed and built in the UK, the new GP450 is the only mid-range adventure bike geared up for long-distance travel straight out of the crate. The bike boasts a long-range tank, a durable 30KW engine seen previously in the BMW G450 and a host of accessories, including a soft-luggage and hard-luggage option and a low-seat, low-suspension option. The machine is expected to appeal to riders wanting something more manageable off road than the large-capacity adventure bikes made popular by the exploits of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in their Long Way
Round television series. The low-seat option and light weight of only 135kg are expected to make the GP450 a hit with female riders, as well as those craving more off-road ability from their adventure bike while visiting the unmarked terrain of places like Morocco, the Pyrenees or the Swiss Alps. The GP450 Adventure is set to cost £7,995. CCM are taking pre-orders before the Motorcycle Live show, which runs from November 23 to December 1. And CCM are offering a special NEC offer. With any GP450 Adventure ordered, the customer will receive goodies worth £500, including a £250 voucher towards any aftermarket accessory. Test rides on the production models will be run during the NEC show.

EVEN out of ten motorists in the UK are against the clocks going back this weekend, according to a new survey. And 60 per cent of drivers think there would be fewer deaths on British roads if the system was abolished. A poll by Smart Witness showed that 70.8 per cent of people would vote to abolish British Standard Time if there was a referendum. British Standard Time, also referred to as British Summer Time, puts the clocks forward of Greenwich Mean Time by an hour on the last Sunday of March, and then puts them back again on the last Sunday of October. One of the main reasons for opposition to the clocks going back an hour on Sunday, October 27 was the increased number of child deaths on the roads because of darker afternoons. Some 60 per cent of drivers said the reason they want to stop the clocks going back is that road-accident mortality rates rise significantly in the winter months. Smart Witness managing director Simon Marsh said: “The findings

Act fast to grab TTS limited edition THE Audi TT has reached the landmark sales figure of 500,000 since it was launched in 1998. And Audi is celebrating with the arrival of a TTS limited-edition model. Prices start from £38,860 for the Coupe and £42,320 for the Roadster. The TTS limited edition comes with exclusive nimbus grey paint for the Coupe and Imola yellow for the Road-
ster. Only 120 TTS limited-edition models will make it to the UK out of 500 built. Both versions have 19in alloy wheels as standard, along with grey leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and a Bose stereo system. In total, the limited edition has £5,665 worth of extra equipment included for a price increase of £2,815 over a standard TTS model.

● YOU are on the motorway in really heavy rain. There is a lot of spray, which reduces visibility, and patches of standing water, which can cause aquaplaning. So, what do you do? Slow down, keep your distance and flick on the lights, including fogs – unless you are a total idiot. There were lots of idiots zooming down the outside lane of the M5 in Gloucestershire on Saturday afternoon without moderating speed or switching on lights. These are the kind of people who think they are invincible, the people who believe it will never happen to them, the people who travel as fast as they dare everywhere – regardless of the conditions – because they possess that dangerous combination of impatience, complacency and arrogance. These people have the mistaken belief that the warm, dry bubble of steel in which
they travel will protect them from harm. Instead, they should think of their vehicle as a projectile weapon, capable of untold damage and misery. Such drivers have their fingers on the self-destruct button, so I try to stay as far away from them as possible. That is easier said than done on a rain-soaked motorway when they overtake and cut in, creating so much spray that visibility is cut to virtually zilch. Let us move on to rather more positive observations. On a sunny day last week I pulled up at a set of traffic lights and noticed two drivers, both women on their own, singing away to themselves, clearly enjoying a happy moment. I have noticed the sun tends to bring out the best in motorists. So I am not looking forward to winter. ● What drives you to distraction? t a 4x4? Is it an estate? It is a bit of both – t Subaru’s Outback should be none the rse for that. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Verdict Subaru’s Outback is not a sport utility vehicle but offers most of what that class provides in a package that is a little more rugged than your average large 4x4 estate. After all, its permanent symmetrical all-wheel-drive system will keep you going long after other off-road estates have waved the white flag.
T
HE Subaru Outback. With a history going all the way back to 1996, it was the original off-road-orientated family estate, with an image that, at the turn of the century, placed it comfortably alongside big Volvos and Land Rovers as a preferred choice for the country set. In more recent times, it has been a rarer sight on our roads – something Subaru’s importers would like to change, with the introduction of this much-improved, fourth-generation version. A 50mm increase on ground clearance over the standard Legacy Tourer estate, on which this model is based, means 200mm of fresh air beneath the bodywork. It is not enough to tackle anything too rocky but certainly better than pretend off-roaders like Toyota’s RAV4. In any case, cars like this one are not bought to tackle the Rubicon Trail but to deal with muddy cart tracks and slippery back roads, with or without heavy trailers in tow. All of this is well within the Outback’s remit thanks to its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. This usually splits power 50/50 between front and rear axles in manual models – or 60/40 if you have gone for the Lineartronic CVT automatic version. The car shunts power around to the wheel that can best use it in any given slushy situation. In short, it is better off the road than a car of this kind has any right to be.
This revised model feels more upmarket, featuring smart carbon-effect accents on the doors, metallic accents for the centre console and the dashboard, and a more ergonomic steering-wheel design. There are classier instrument dials too, separated by a neat 3.5in colour liquid-crystal display. Expect to find 526-litres of space with all the seats in place and 1,677-litres when you flip the useful levers by the tailgate to flatten the 60/40 split-folding rear bench. Expect to pay around £30,000 for your Outback in manual-gearbox form. There is a £1,500 premium to find if you want the Lineartronic automatic. There is only one trim level, and the single estate bodystyle. These days, you only get a 2.0-litre diesel-engine option. In terms of Subaru’s own line-up, that kind of outlay pitches this car in about £1,000 above top-specification, comparably-equipped 4WD diesel-powered versions of the slightly-less-capable Legacy Tourer and the slightly-morecapable Forester. All Outback models come with 17in gunmetal-coloured alloy wheels, silver roof rails, power-folding heated mirrors, a roof spoiler, UV-protected glass, a power-sliding glass sunroof, self-levelling automatic HID headlamps with washers, rain-sensing wipers and front foglamps. Inside, you can expect to find dual-zone air conditioning, a six-speaker stereo system with USB and aux-in compatibility, Bluetooth phone compat-
ibility, a trip computer, a VGA centre display with rear parking camera, heated sports seats with power adjustment for the driver, and a leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel from which you can operate cruise control. There are really only two main options – leather trim and satellite navigation. Usually, a more-capable car is more expensive to run. You would expect that the permanent symmetrical all-wheeldrive system of this Outback would exact more of a fuel and emissions penalty than would be found on most other rivals, cars that trundle around in two-wheel drive most of the time, with all-wheel traction only being introduced when needed. Thanks to enhancements like an exhaust gas recirculator – which alone improves efficiency by 12 per cent – the figures suggest otherwise. Take the 47.9mpg combined-cycle fuel figure and 155g/km CO2 reading you will get from a manual, diesel-powered Outback model. The Lineartronic automatic diesel version I have manages 44.8mpg and 166g/km. In both cases, the returns are not far off those achieved by less-capable rivals like Vauxhall’s Insignia Country Tourer, Volkswagen’s Passat Alltrack and the Audi A4 Allroad. The car offers the peace of mind of a five-year/100,000-mile warranty. And with service intervals at 12,000 miles, the Outback should not prove too arduous to own.

GEAR UP FOR A TT EXTRAVAGANZA M

OTORCYCLE Live features a double dose of TT action this year, with two days dedicated to the Isle of Man’s flagship road-racing festivals. Sunday, November 24 will celebrate the Classic TT, while Sunday, December 1 will be devoted to the world’s most famous road race, the Isle of Man TT. There will also be special guest appearances from top racers on a daily basis. Twenty-time TT champion John McGuinness and 2013’s big victor Michael Dunlop will be leading a star-studded line-up which also includes Manxman Conor Cummins, fans’ favourite Bruce Anstey, SES TT Zero winner Michael Rutter, veteran competitor Ian Lougher and rising star James Hillier, who won his first TT race this year. John Holden and Andy Winkle, Ben and Tom Birchall, Tim Reeves and Dan Sayle, and 16-time TT champion Dave Molyneux along with his passenger Patrick Farrance will be representing the sidecars. Riders will be signing autographs and meeting fans on the TT Paddock Experience stand, and taking part in daily question-and-answer sessions
with TT commentator James Whitham on the Black Horse Stage in the British Eurosport Entertainment Zone. On December 1, the TT will take over the stage, with four question-and-answer sessions and a special TT-themed edition of Fast Bikes’ Question of Bikes hosted by Steve Parrish. Race fans will also have the chance to bag early-bird grandstand and VIP hospitality packages for the 2014 Isle of Man TT. Advance tickets for Motorcycle Live 2013 – which is being held at the NEC, Birmingham – are £17 per adult, £11 per senior and £7 per child aged six to 16. Children under five accompanied by a paying adult receive free admission. Bike parking is free, subject to availability.
