OTORING is cheaper today than it was a decade ago. In real terms, travelling in a new car costs 13p per mile in fuel, compared to 15p in 2000 (inflation adjusted). Sust-it’s analysis of the Vehicle Certification Agency emissions-testing data reveals a 34 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency across car manufacturers’ ranges. Over the last 13 years, the average miles per gallon for new petrol cars has jumped from 32 to 43, and diesels from 43 to 58. Sust-it examined the energy efficiency, between 2000 and 2013, of manufacturers with 500 or more UK model variants, and found that the ten most-improved brands are Kia, BMW, Hyundai, Volvo, Toyota, Mercedes, Fiat, Honda, Peugeot and Subaru. Kia’s model range is top with a 46 per cent more fuel-efficient range in 2013 versus 2000, with the figure for BMW at 42 per cent. Unsurprisingly, small-car manufacturer Fiat has the most fuel-efficient
model range – with Seat, Skoda, Citroen and Peugeot close behind. Sust-it delved into the recently-published testing data for electric vehicles and found that the running cost of these vehicles is less than half that of even the most fuel-efficient diesel cars. The Renault Clio 4 dCi 90 ECO diesel costs around 7.5p per mile, compared to 3p mile for the electric BMW i3 (above), making it 56 per cent cheaper to run. In environmental terms, electric cars have zero emissions while moving – reducing pollution in towns and cities. However, if you factor in the
power-station CO2 emissions in electricity generation required to charge the batteries, the green benefits become less clear. The diesel-powered Clio 4 dCi 90 ECO emits 83 CO2g/km, while the power-station emissions to charge the electric BMW i3 are 69 CO2g/km, based on the average UK mains electricity supply. A Sust-it spokesman said: “My concern is that electric vehicles are being promoted as a greener option than they actually are. Zero tail-pipe emissions are only half the story. It would be more realistic to include the CO2 emissions produced in electricity generation, required to power these vehicles, on the showroom energy labels and in advertising.” The Sust-it website displays electricity costs of charging electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, plus associated CO2 emissions produced in electricity generation. Figures show the real cost of running electric cars, and their emissions. The energy-usage figures are based on VCA testing data and average UK energy costs. www.renault.co.uk

T WAS a shocking but beautiful sight: lightning flashing brilliantly, illuminating the whole of the dark sky ahead for miles around. At the time, I was heading along the M5 from Stroud towards Bristol in the dark, and in pouring rain and driving wind. The light show certainly got my attention and enabled me to see much further into the distance than the filthy weather would otherwise allow. This spectacular light show continued for a few minutes, and I missed it when it stopped. I had been particularly grateful of the better view afforded of the juggernauts – where they were and how ridiculously close together they travelled, despite the atrocious conditions. If I can, I avoid them, overtaking in the outside lane if possible, even if the lorries remain far left. A strong gust can cause a lorry to deviate across the white line – and it is best not to be in the way, especially when there is the added complication of surface water and spray to consider. Away from the motorway, I have noticed quite a bit of amber-light jumping this

Fuel economy Most customers will choose the DDiS diesel engine and rightly so. It’s better to drive and gets strong economy. Suzuki quotes a figure of 67.2mpg for the front-wheel drive version, which is on a par with the less powerful Skoda Yeti GreenLine. Go four wheel drive and you’re looking at 64.2mpg. Emissions are well in check with the front-wheel drive diesel recording 110g/km and the four-wheel drive version 114g/km. Choose a petrol-engined model and these numbers range from 125 to 135g/km, while combined cycle fuel consumption varies between 47.8 and 51.3mpg, depending on your choice between two or four wheel drive and manual or CVT auto transmission.

Verdict The old Suzuki SX4 was a good idea, blending Italian design with Japanese engineering. But its key problem was that it was too small. Step forward the SX4 S-Cross, the bigger and more comfortable successor. Go for the diesel if you fancy a crossover that is not a Nissan Qashqai.

The ALLGRIP 4WD system is only available on the top version for a premium of around £1,800. You will need an SZ5-spec model to opt for the CV auto gearbox too. Even the base SZ3 gets 16-inch alloys, air-conditioning, cruise control, front and rear electric windows, heated door mirrors and a USB socket. There is also a model designed to target the fleet market, the SZT featuring 17-inch wheels, silver roof rails, skid plates, satellite navigation, dual-zone air conditioning, DAB radio, and a keyless entry and start system. The range-topping SZ5 gets high-intensity-discharge headlamps, leather upholstery and a huge twin-panel sunroof. Perhaps the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is a tacit admission that the previous-generation SX4 was a bit lightweight for the task in hand. But in supersizing the SX4, Suzuki now has a far more competitive vehicle on its books. The problem is that the vehicles with which it is now competing are formidable and have bigger dealer networks to back them up. The S-Cross is priced keenly, is well equipped, features very low emissions, offers plenty of space inside and is styled attractively, if a little anonymously. In all likelihood, it will not outsell cars like the Nissan Qashqai and the Hyundai ix35. That said, it will certainly do a lot better than its predecessor.

Fuel economy You don’t automatically need to go for a diesel if you want decent fuel economy. Take the TCe 115 petrol engine as an example. Equipped with Stop & Start technology that cuts the engine at idle, it makes the sort of numbers that not so long ago would have been respectable turbodiesel figures. You’ll manage a combined fuel economy figure in the region of 53mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are down to 119g/km, while the car’s range is in the region of 620 miles, which is again similar to the distances associated with diesel models. Prefer a diesel? The dCi 110 Stop & Start has proven very popular. This 1.5-litre unit records fuel consumption figures of 80.7 mpg and emits just 90g/km of carbon dioxide. The 1.6dCi 130 Stop & Start makes a hefty 320Nm of torque, yet still manages a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 70.6 mpg, which is a 20 per cent saving compared to the old 1.9 dCi 130 engine. To assist parking manoeuvres, a camera located at the rear provides a precise image of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings and depicts its trajectory to help drivers adjust their line. Depreciation has not been a strong point of Renault medium-range cars down the years. But the latest Megane fights back with much-improved residual figures. That is thanks in no small part to a much-improved focus on reliability. Germany’s ADAC placed it near the top of its class when it came to mechanical durability, ranking it good and even excellent over the service period between 2007 and 2012. This third-generation Megane was introduced with a brief to improve quality and boost refinement. In 2012 it was revised again to up efficiency and integrate some clever electronics. Now Renault is improving the car again. So, the Megane now looks more extrovert and feels more expensive. Reliability should no longer be in question and there are no grumbles about the way the car drives. Economy and emissions are top drawer, as is safety. What more could Renault do to fettle the Megane further?

Yamaha MT-09 It’s a serious contender in the urban sports sector
What does it cost? Here’s where things get a little interesting as the MT-09 is priced cleverly at just below its main rivals at £6,932 on the road. The Triumph Street Triple costs £6,999 and
How does it handle? Whereas old FZ8 models made do with a tube perimeter frame, this latest MT-09 features a proper aluminium twin-spar frame cast in two halves and then bolted together. This increase in chassis rigidity means the bike handles the power of the 847cc engine with consummate ease as well as being able to corner safely under savage braking. The rear shock lies flat and is adjustable for preload and rebound but eschews compression damping which is the same for the front forks. Still 2 out of 3 isn’t bad when compared to the Street Triple which has no adjustment available at all. So this Yamaha is an aggressive sporty, urban bike but does it also have the ability to be comfortable and accommodating in the city environment where it is most likely to be seen and used? The straight answer is yes. Compared
to its main rival, the Street Triple, the MT-09 matches it at every level and in some areas even surpasses the class leader, These include a stronger engine, better quality finish and a higher specification.

YOU can probably get faster bikes than Ducati’s and you can buy more expensive bikes if you’re that way inclined, but try as you might you’ll be hard pushed to buy anything sexier than this Italian work of mechanical art – the new Ducati 899 Panigale. Based on its bigger brother, the 1199 Panigale, the new bike shares many of the bigger bike’s hardware and technology.
What does it cost? At £12,495 the Ducati 899 Panigale offers an incredibly sophisticated and high performance machine for the money and will not cause too much damage to the owner’s bank account. Buying this cheaper Ducati however does not mean you sacrifice any performance as the 899 Panigale is likely to be every bit as potent and enjoyable to ride as its bigger sibling.

How does it handle? The new Ducati 899 Panigale uses the same small cast aluminium frame as the 1199 Panigale but the engine is all-new. This is a V-twin unit with four large valves per cylinder fitted with an automatic decompression system that is an aid to starting. Its ride-by-wire system provides three riding modes (wet, sport and race) which are integrated with the ABS and engine braking control. The big V-twin sounds just as a Ducati should when you rev it to the red-line although such are its torque characteristics that you should make indecent progress even when short-shifting up through its excellent box. The gearbox is the same as that used on the 1199 with its slick action and smooth change including a quickshifter. The Brembo front brakes on the 899 Panigale have two 320 mm semi-floating discs, radially mounted monobloc M4.32 four-piston calipers with ABS as standard. The rear brakes feature a 245 mm disc and a twopiston caliper. The front suspension features Showa big-piston forks as opposed to the pressurised Marzocchi forks found on the 1199. Similarly the rear suspension consists of a single Sachs shock linked to a double-sided swingarm and no adjustable linkage as found on the 1199 Panigale.

Wide of the mark Dodgy Daley types put off the buyers

OMEN have topped a survey showing the type of salesperson motorists are most likely to trust when buying a car. A total of 431 buyers were shown five different stereotypes in a poll by Insurance4MotorTrade to determine the personalities that sell successfully – and the patter that puts buyers off. Unsurprisingly, the “Arthur Daley” type scored poorly, with just 2.32 per cent of people surveyed saying that they would this type of car salesman. Billed as a dodgy dealer, Arthur Daley is a character from the TV series Minder and has the sort of gift of the gab that would sell ice to the eskimos. He brags about getting great deals on up-to-date models, but they turn out to be old bangers. Next is the “wide boy” independent or “backstreet” trader, who polled just 6.49 per cent of the votes. This
salesman’s business isn’t a full-time vocation, it’s something he runs on the side as a nice little earner. This means he is mostly motivated by profit in any way, shape or form. Private sellers were next on the list, with almost one fifth of the vote. The general consensus seemed to be that buying privately ends up being much cheaper than through a dealership, as long as the consumer has their wits about them. The suited and booted male car sales professional came in second place, with 29 per cent of those surveyed stating that this would be the person they would feel most comfortable purchasing a car from. The positives are clear; these salesmen often work for reputable dealers in full-time positions; they understand that their clients will have different demands, and they have enough information to recommend models and negotiate great deals. However, this salesman lost points for being too “slimy” or “pushy”.

Those polled said women were empathetic in understanding a client’s demands, and they have a less pressurised sales technique which allows the customers to make the decision for themselves. Many also felt that female sales professionals were more open to suggesting family cars,
and were more able to make decisions regarding safety rather than looking good and being good value for money. Chris Lear, managing director at Insurance4MotorTrade, said: “Our survey threw up a few really interesting surprises, not least of which is that some motorists will still do business with a Del Boy or Arthur Daley! “The clear winner was the female
sales person, who encourages trust and empathy. “The majority of those we spoke to agreed that sales women were less pushy, focusing less on the deal and more on helping the driver get a new vehicle that was really right for them. It is this attention to detail that makes many buyers feel that buying a car from a sales woman rather than a sales man is the way to go.”
