3 ADVICE: Always write with your reader in mind
A blog can link you to the world of work Today’s guest post comes from Katrina Collier, who helps job seekers come to grips with the changing recruitment landscape. She encourages them to showcase their expertise and coaches on how engage appropriately on social media networks. Here she looks at how blogging has increasingly become an important part of the job seeker’s armoury…. “I know it sounds crazy but you could be highlighting your expertise and creating opportunities by sharing your ideas and insights… on a blog. BEFORE you hear some reasons why blogging could help your job search, here is a tale from the other side. Recently New York start up, SeatGeek, was looking to hire a Communications Director so they tasked their candidates to write a sample blog post and promote it on the social channels. This allowed them to see who could write the clearest, most compelling and engaging content and promote it the furthest. Obviously this is an important part of this role but blogging can be useful in other ways. In my work I come across a lot of frustrated job seekers, some who have been out of work for a long time, who just cannot get a break.
Take Jenny, she’d returned to University as a mature age student and has completed a degree in Nutrition and she just cannot get a break. She’s tried every idea and tack to no avail. I suggested she try writing down her experiences in a blog. She is using her blog as a way to highlight her expertise. Rather than feel down about the stopgap job she’s in, she uses the people she meets through it as inspiration, talking about changes they’ve made in their nutrition and the affect it is having on their lives. The benefits to her are twofold, she can attract private clients and when applying for a role, she can offer a web link to her ideas along
with her standard CV, setting her apart from the rest. So where do you start? If you’re like me and have a lot to say and you can commit to writing regular blogs, go to WordPress or Blogger and get cracking. If you have less to say, try a site like Tumblr where you can use a mix of
General Vacancies
your own posts and articles by others. Work out the purpose of your blog and always write with your reader in mind. Sure you want to highlight your expertise but what better way to do that than to solve another’s problem with helpful advice. For example, this
blog offers advice on careers & job search while this post aims to inspire you to showcase your expertise as a new blogger and, hopefully, along the way it shows my expertise, subtly. Make sense? In my experience, I’ve found it’s great to mix my blogs up. Sometimes I have a genuine up-beat rant about something I am passionate about, or I may bring in another voice through quotes or I’ll go into reporter mode and interview someone who I feel is of interest to my readers. So you’ve written and published your post, now what? Tell the world! Use your social media networks to get the link out there and add it to social news websites, like Digg, Reddit and Delicious. If you’ve included pictures, pin them to your boards in Pinterest. Add your blog address to your email signature, CV and online profiles too. Look for forums or niche networks and use your post as a conversation starter. Don’t feel that you have to stop there either. Is your post topical or newsworthy? Journ-
alists are regularly on the hunt for stories, search for them online or have a look at #journorequest on Twitter. Many trade magazines now include blogging sections where, as long as you abide by their rules, you can write posts and get noticed. Finally, look for other bloggers in your field. Comment on their posts, get them chatting and connect with them on social networks because they just may know someone who is looking for you. Don’t be afraid to ask if you can write a guest post, just remember to add value and write for their readers. So have I convinced you or do you think it’s a crazy idea?
Katrina Collier, of Winning Impression is a Social Media in Recruitment Trainer and Consultant, she shows companies how to incorporate social media into the mix to dramatically reduce their hiring costs and she shows job seekers, through a range of live online training sessions, how to power their job search with social media.

7 ADVICE: First impressions really count
Eight tips to make teaching work for you It will also mark you out as someone a school can rely on.
Much like any form of temporary work – moving from placement to placement on a regular basis – being a supply teacher takes certain skills and attributes. And whether you are a seasoned supply teacher or are perhaps starting out, there are lots of things you can do to maximise your chances of success. But what are they? We asked Peter Flannery, Managing Director of Capita Education Resourcing, for his top tips to ensure you make the most of this career choice… ● Partner with a specialist: Choose a recruitment consultancy which specialises in teaching, and more specifically supply work. It might be tempting to register with lots of generic agencies; however it is wise to stick with one that knows your field inside out and has the right contacts. And once you’ve found the right one, its consultants will get to know you and your strengths, propelling you from suitable role to suitable role over a period of months, if not years. ● Be flexible: Often, schools rely on supply teachers due to a last minute absence. This means you will often be approached with little or no notice – you may, for example, get
● Research: As soon as you know what school you will be working at, find out from the agency if there is any more information they can provide you with. Are there, for example, any pupils with special needs that you might need to prepare for or who may require a teaching assistant present? Additionally, check out the website – this can often give you a flavour of the school and tell you if it has any particular specialisms.
a call from your agency at 7:30am about a role that starts at 8:30am. It is important to have a degree of flexibility to ensure you gain access to as many opportunities as possible. Let your agency know when you register that you are happy to be called with little notice. It is also important to keep your agency informed with your availability and to call them as well as them contacting you. ● First impressions really count: Like any temporary work ‘you are only as good as your last assignment’. It’s important then that you make a good first impression when you enter a school. People make their mind up about an individual in the first few min-
utes of meeting them – make sure you stand out to ensure you have the best chance of being remembered and called back for future work. ● Be punctual: Perhaps obvious, but you would he surprised at how many people fall

at the first hurdle by not being on time for an assignment, this is especially important in a school environment with strict timetables. By arriving on time or even better early, you will have the chance to familiarise yourself with the school and the other teachers.
● Be prepared: It’s a wise idea to bring your own resources and activity ideas along with you, should, for some reason, there not be a lesson plan left for you. It’s not as uncommon as you might believe so ensure you are prepared and not left thinking on your feet with a class full of children waiting. ● Leave a note for the returning teacher: No matter how long you are covering for, it stands to reason that the

returning teacher will be in the dark about what their class has been doing, therefore it is vital to leave notes explaining briefly what lessons took place, if there have been any difficulties with certain pupils, and what homework, if any, is due in. ● Gratitude: It is courteous to thank the head teacher on your last day and let them know how you got on. As long as you have performed to your best this will greatly increase your chances of being asked back. It’s also important to speak to your agency and let them know if you would be interested in working there again so they can relay this to their client. Supply teaching is a fantastic career choice, one that can provide flexibility and the ability to increase your experience in a short space of time. Hopefully by following these tips you will give yourself the best chance of success. Good luck. For more careers advice, visit jobsite.co.uk

9 ADVICE: Be brave and let company know you have the skills they’re looking for
How to get yourself noticed by a recruiter THERE are many benefits in using social media within your job hunt, but one that is often overlooked is the information that you can get by following bloggers. Many HR and recruitment professionals write regular blogs, and they often offer invaluable insight into the recruitment and hiring process, giving the job seeker a chance to see how their interviewers see things. A lot of recruiters also offer their thoughts on how candidates can improve their chances of being considered for a role and of getting feedback from, and interaction with, the people involved in the hiring process. We read one such blog today from US recruiter Amy Ala in which she offers some advice for making sure that your application doesn’t get stuck in the process… and most of her points echo those made by other recruiters. The four key actions to follow are: Know what you can do What are you good at? What
training have you had and what skills have you developed? Where can you have a positive impact? Many of these questions are those that you should ask yourself when writing your CV and certainly when applying for roles. Your chances of making a shortlist will be enhanced if you are applying for roles that match your skills and capabilities. Be selective A common complaint from recruiters is over the volume of applications for each role. They know that in the current jobs market there are many people looking for work and applying to vacant positions, but when they are trying to fill a specific role they want to be able to focus on those who have relevant skills. It isn’t easy, but the process will be helped if you target the vacancies and companies that best suit the person you identified in point one… you! Contact the recruiter It may seem that we’re going out a bit on a limb with this one, but many recruiters do respond to contact… provided
General Vacancies
you are a good match for the role and can demonstrate it. If you are using social media in your search then LinkedIn
could be a starting point as you can find the relevant person and see if you have any connections that may be able
General Vacancies
to introduce you. Don’t start sending invites through LinkedIn if you haven’t a connection though… use the con-
General Vacancies
tact information that the recruiter gives in their profile. Sometimes an email, even a phone call, can get through… provided you can show that you have the skills and abilities to do the job, and have done your homework on the company. After all, the recruiter wants to get the right person to fill the role as soon as possible. Try and make their life easier! Patience Maybe the hardest part of all is the waiting. You don’t know if you’re being considered or not and the temptation is to start following up. This is particularly tough at the moment, as the volume of applications is high, so even if you are dealing with a recruiter who does get back to all candidates, it may take time. Any follow-up should be professional and courteous, and should re-affirm your relevance for the role. The key words Amy used for the right follow-up approach were steady, consistent, positive.
