Travel Tuesday MUSIC LEGENDS IN UK AND ABROAD
Take an early summer holiday to see Sir Cliff
W
E’RE all going on an early summer holiday. That is what you can sing if you catch our great trip to see pop legend Sir Cliff Richard in concert. Although he may not be touring anywhere in the UK during the whole of next year, Sir Cliff is headlining a show on the Continent – in Brussels in May. His Still Reelin’ And A-Rockin’ show will be staged at the Euro capital city’s new Palais 12 indoor arena. You can be there to enjoy a two-hour set of classic hits and rock’n’roll, including songs from Sir Cliff's 100th album, The Fabulous Rock’n’Roll Songbook. The price includes coach travel, Channel crossings, two nights’ bed and breakfast in a hotel, and a seat at the Palais 12 to see the great man perfor m. You will have an opportunity to visit the cobbled streets around the Grand Place. This is full of smart boutiques, cafes and shops selling Belgian specialities such as lace and chocolates. That same evening, your coach will transfer you to the Palais 12, on the
outskirts of Brussels, for your fantastic Sir Cliff Richard Still Reelin’ And A-Rockin’ concert. After a magical night’s entertainment, your coach will return you to the hotel. You will leave for home the following morning. Sir Cliff is one of a trio of world-famous singers we have lined up for you. In March, why not join our trip to see Michael Buble in Manchester? If you missed the chance to see Michael this year – his London concert dates sold out rapidly – you really should book now to see him in Manchester next spring. Backed by his Big Band, the chart-topping Canadian crooner will perform jazz standards and modern hits to conclude his European tour. In April there is an opportunity to see Johnny Mathis in his Voice Of Romance concert. This is a great chance to join Johnny as he marks 58 years since his first recording. The three-time Grammy-winning artist plays the NEC in Birmingham – and fans can expect a fantastic concert of his greatest, classic hits with a sprinkling of songs from his most recent album, Let It Be Me.
● Cliff Richard
● Michael Bublé
● Johnny Mathis
Two decades separate Johnny's first US number one, Chances Are, from his second, Too Much, Too Little, Too Late. His performance in Birmingham promises to bring you jazz standards like the iconic Misty, plus country covers from his
latest album, pop ballads and much more. On the way home on this two-day break there will be a stop in Stratford-upon-Avon. In Stratford you can browse eclectic shops – from antiquarian booksellers to jewellers, chocolatiers and
cheesemongers – or wander along the historic lanes, and perhaps pay a visit to the birthplace of England’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. You will leave Stratford in the mid-afternoon, arriving back home by mid-to-late evening.

Travel Tuesday FESTIVE FUN
See in the new year twice with our super Rhine holiday
I
MAGINE what it would be like to do something really different to celebrate the new year. Well, that is where we can help. We have two great – but very different – ideas to help usher in 2014. For starters, how about seeing in the new year not once but twice – by heading off on a spectacular five-day break in the Rhine Valley? It is no ordinary break, either. It features exciting excursions and entertainment, including a fabulous Venetian ball to lead you up to midnight, followed by fireworks
and champagne to welcome in the new year. The fun begins as you take the Eurostar out of London and head for Remagen on the Rhine. Remagen will be your base for the next four nights. The next day, you will travel by train into the beautiful Ahr Valley to visit the walled city of Ahrweiler. While there you can sample some of the fine wine for which this region is so famous. The third day is New Year’s Eve – and it begins when you board the Vulkan Express for a nostalgic re-
turn train journey through one of the prettiest valleys of the Rhine to Engeln, while enjoying a glass of sparkling wine. Then, at 7pm. the party will begin at your hotel with a Venetian costume ball. Costumes are optional but the best will earn the wearer a bottle of champagne. A five-course gala dinner will be served, and there will be live music and dancing spread across the whole evening. At midnight you can watch the fireworks display and toast the new year with a glass of champagne –
before celebrating the British new year at 1am, as the UK time is one hour behind Europe. Day four enables you to relax at leisure or join a ramble around Remagen with a mug of mulled wine, before catching the train to Bonn – birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven. After breakfast on the fifth day you will retrace your route to Brussels and join Eurostar for the return journey to London. If you do not want to travel abroad to celebrate, we can whisk you off to London for the New Year’s Day
parade. This forms part of a three-day trip which also includes visits to Oxford and Windsor. On this fantastic break, we have brought together everything you need to relax and enjoy this special time of year. Visit Oxford – described as the city of dreaming spires – and the riverside town of Windsor, renowned for royal connections. Then celebrate New Year’s Eve in a comfortable hotel with sumptuous food, and dancing, before heading to London on New Year’s Day for the spectacular parade.

Our Opinion… Our Travel Team has journeyed extensively around the world, experiencing a whole host of sights and sounds, cultures and traditions, history and architecture. Here is a selection of handpicked favourites, just for you, and some great holidays that will enable you to experience them for yourself… Budapest is a wonderful city of two halves: take a funicular ride to the Castle District of Buda, head to Mátyás Church, an amazing white building that seems to gleam in the sun, its tiled roof is an artwork in itself. From Fisherman’s Bastion there are spectacular views across the roof of the Calvinist Church, to Pest’s Parliament Building, St Stephen’s Basilica and beyond. In Pest, start at the Neo-Gothic Parliament Building that sits right on the river bank, wander past the memorial statue of Imre Nagy, martyr and Prime Minister during the Hungarian revolution; past Ronald Regan’s statue, erected in Liberty Square in honour of his role in helping end communism, and on to St Stephen’s Basilica which is equally as impressive by day as it is by night. The city has many cafes, restaurants and bars in which to enjoy a rest from your city exploration. The Amalfi Coast stretches south from the Bay of Naples and winds its way between the Mediterranean Sea and the cliffs, past stylish towns nestled on improbable slopes, and lemon groves that make the region’s famous tipple, limoncello. It truly is a beautiful drive which offers incredible views and wonderful places to stop and explore. Sorrento lies at the westernmost point of the Sorrentine Peninsula and is a city that saw its heyday in the 18th century when the aristocracy of Europe built holiday villas on its cliff tops. More than 200 years later it still offers echoes of the past, coupled with splendid modern glamour, cobbled streets and tiny squares. Heading east along the southern shore discover Positano, a pretty enclave that has become a magnet for celebrities, and Amalfi itself, set in a suitably dramatic location at the foot of Mount Cerreto and centred around its Romanesque cathedral which watches over Piazza Duomo. Last but not least, South Africa. Often referred to as ‘the world in one country’ it offers an extreme diversity of landscape, people, history and culture and a truly unique travel experience that should be on everyone’s must-do list. A second visit to this amazing country did not disappoint, the safari experience is one of the main reasons for heading to this part of the world - the Kruger National Park is home to an incredible array of animals and birds including the ‘big five’ - game viewing is intensely moving and a successful day will leave you floating, in awe, on cloud nine. Cape Town, with its iconic Table Mountain, is a vibrant city and the perfect base for visiting the beaches, Winelands and the Garden Route.
