CIVIL WAR April 18, 1865

On April 9,1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.

“It all boils down to this: A person has only two options in life, to do something or to do nothing.”Jebediah Brewster (pg. 64) The Civil War was a war fighting for civil rights. It was fought between the Confederate Army, fighting for slavery, and the Union Army, fighting for civil rights. It lasted from 1861 to 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE The Civil War had many important people and generals. The most well known one was Abraham Lincoln, elected president of the US in 1860. 5 days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre. Ulysses S. Grant was the General of the Union Army, along with President Lincoln. They were fighting the

Confederate Army, mainly led by Robert E. Lee. Another very well known Civil War hero is Harriet Tubman, who risked her life to help free slaves in the South using the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a series of houses and other stopping places from the south to the north states and Canada. It was used as shelter and hiding for slaves wanting to escape.

There was 50 major battles and over 5,000 minor battles during the Civil War

IMPORTANT BATTLES There were many battles of the Civil War and the most famous one was the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was between the Unions, led by George G. Meade, and the Confederate, led by Robert E. Lee. The Unions ended up winning the battle and the Confederate Army was forced to go back to Virginia, and did not return to the North. Another important battle was the First Battle of Bull Run. It was the first oďŹƒcial battle of the Civil War. It was fought with about 35,000 Unions and 20,000

Confederates. Though the Confederates were out numbered, they ended up defeating the Union army. Finally, the Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle in America’s history. It had over 20,000 total deaths and casualties and about 2,000 missing. The Unions won the battle, but with a count of over 12,000 deaths.

Dear Ulysses S. Grant, I belive one of your men from Maine is my older brother. He is underaged and illegally sold to the army by our greedy uncle. If you happen to see him, please tell him that his little brother is looking for him and to get out of the army. Thank you. Sincerly, Homer P. Figg
