ROBERT E. LEE

The Union Army "Not only save the Union, but destroy slavery," (The Grant Homepage) General Ulysses S. Grant says. Fighting for the Union army, General Grant was asked by Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the united States, to Command of all the union armies. In 1862, Grant took control of Kentucky and most of Tennessee, and led Union forces to victory in the Battle of Shilo. Working with the naval forces, General Grant was able to capture both Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee on February 6, 1862. At these battles The confederates surrender allowing Grant to capture approximately eleven thousand five hundred confederate soldiers.

The Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee became a commander of the confederate army in North Virginia in 1862. General Lee was very strategic, and won lots of battles because of it. He is said to be one of greatest commanders of the south. There is one thing about Robert E. Lee that set him apart from others. General Lee did not like slavery and didn’t want the confederates to win. In fact, Robert E. Lee only fights for Virginia because it is his home state which he feels loyal to. He was later charged for betraying his nation after the war had ended and the union had won, but he was never brought to trial. General Robert E. Lee later dies of natural causes in 1870.

Places and battle fields in the Civil War The first battle of the civil war was at Fort Sumter Charleston Over three million men fought in this particular battle and more than 600,000 (2 percent of the entire population) died. After 34 hours the defending Union army surrendered. The First Manassas was a quick and easy battle won by the Union. The battle claimed the name The First Bull Run because the troops and spectators from the Union army retreated and ran back to Washington DC. The battle of Shilo in Mississippi Valley Campaign was very expensive for both the north and south. At the end of the 2 day battle the Union was victorious. The battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania is one of the most well know battles of the Civil War. This battle was the “turning point

of the entire war. Approximately 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing after Gettysburg.
