Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point. Union Maj. Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's attempt to invade the North.

Hello Mom, This your son Charley. I just wanted to tell you that I'm doing fine. This “war” is taking a lot of time. It’s been a year or two, I think, I can’t remember, at least it felt like it. I made only one friend and he died in the first round. He got shot, and suddenly fell down. I didn’t even feel any kind of feeling because it was war. One thing that I hated the most was when someone gets shot in the belly, because if you go to the nurse they’ll just say that they can’t do anything. You’re just there waiting alone until you die, you’ll survive for three days then you were gone. That’s what happened to one of my friends. Winter arrived, we didn’t fight then, it was too cold then. Every single kind of disease started to spread around the soldiers. We were always doing nothing because we couldn’t even move, we just stayed there next to the fire. I had money enough to buy a cake every week. The cake wasn’t even good, it tasted like wood but I still ate it because I was hungry. I miss you and your delicious meals. I hope you get this letter and you find a way to help me, take care of yourself and my brother. Sincerely your son Charley.
