Jonas Norberg

Have you ever been on a Ship, boat, or vessel, and in the distance noticed light coming from the shore. Well that is probably a lighthouse. A Lighthouse is a tower or building or

any structure that is designed with a system of lights to make it easier for boats for navigation. Lighthouses are usually put on rocky coasts, or entrances to harbors.

WHY I CHOSE THIS TOPIC I chose this topic because I know lighthouses are such a huge icon of Maine, and I live in Maine, and i really never knew much about lighthouses until I started studying lighthouses

CHANGING THE FACE OF THE LIGHTHOUSE JONAS NORBERG

HENRY WINSTANLEY

Jonas Norberg was a swedish inventor who made lighthouses much better. GALE virtual library says, “Norberg designed the first flashing light used in a lighthouse. At the Korso lighthouse, he arranged clockworks to rotate two curved mirrors in order to reflect light intermittently.” Before him There would always have to be a lighthouse keeper there would always have to be a lighthouse keeper who always

Henry Winstanley was the first man ever to build an American lighthouse, he owned two ships all until both crashed on the rocks in 1696 and were shipwrecked on the Eddystone Rocks. So Henry Winstanley decided to build a lighthouse so so that wouldn’t happen anymore on the Eddystone Rocks. He completed the lighthouse in 1698, but died 5 short years later in a storm that also destroyed his lighthouse.

GREAT DUCK ISLAND LIGHT THE STORY OF SEABOY In Great Duck Island Lighthouse is located just south of Mount Desert Island and the Cranberry Islands. Theres a fascinating story about Great Duck Island Light. In the book Lighthouses Of Maine it says “In a shipwreck just off of Great duck Island, the captain and his crew abandoned there ship and clambered into a long life boat. The ship’s dog attempted to jump in the lifeboat too, but didnt make it, the whole crew had thought the dog drowned. But drowned he did not. The dog made is ashore on Great Duck Island and came shivering to the door, bleeding from his head. For two years the daughter of the lighthouse keeper fed and healed the dog, she named him Seaboy. Then one day the old captain came back to the island for two days. The dog and his old master enjoyed two days together, when it was time for the captain to leave, the dog ran down to the beach to leave with him. The keepers daughter wept thinking Seaboy was gone to her. The dog heard her, and jumped back into the arms of the little girl who had nursed him back to life.”

The Pharos Of Alexandria ANCIENT LIGHTHOUSES “let there be light.” A famous saying by a mariner on a dark stormy night before the were any lighthouses invented. One of the very first lighthouses was the Pharos Of Alexandria built on the date 300BC, in the city of Egypt. The lighthouse was reported 550 feet high.
