THE WORLD AT WAR This is a picture of a fire in a starfish site (aka decoy town) in the UK. These sites were intended to make it seem as if there were a bombing attack in the night to deceive the nazi aircrafts.

WWII was a very dark time for both Jews in Europe and soldiers fighting in the war and had a lasting impact on the world.

DECEPTION

Deception played a very large role in the war and was considered by the Americans a way to make the odds more even. The Allies used deception as a strategy of war to help them win. For examples, deception was used with german bombing in the UK from 1940-1941, the invasion of Sicily and the Invasion of Normandy. However, the Nazis were far more trained as soldiers than the U.S. and it would take the Allies too long to catch up. By the time they did, the Nazi’s would have already won. So, what were they going to use to win the war? Deception. During The Blitz (shortened from the German term blitzkrieg) meaning lightning war, Nazi Germany sustainably and strategically dropped bombs all over the UK killing 32,00 civilians and injuring even more. (wikipedia) In an effort to stop the bombing, ‘fake’ towns were built to

from cities that had communities and were likely to be bombed. They were meant to look like burning cities in the UK and confuse the Germans. In the invasion of Sicily, deception was also used. The most famous deception in the Invasion of Sicily was Operation Mincemeat. In this operation, the allies disguised a corpse as a British soldier carrying a briefcase with fake documents that had fake information that revealed that the allies were not planning on invading Sicily and were actually planning to invade Greece and Sardina. The allies hoped the Axis powers (Germany and Italy) would redirect some of their forces to Greece and Sardina because it would make the Invasion of Sicily much easier. The Germans did move a lot of their defensive efforts from Sicily to Greece but there was still a large number of German and Italian soldiers when the allies invaded. (wikipedia)

Deception was extremely important in the Invasion of Normandy. The Allies had to deceive the germans as to the date and location of the invasion and if the Germans

INVASION OF NORMANDY

knew of their enemies plans, the plans would fail. So it was exceptionally important that the Germans didn’t learn the plans. The Invasion was code named Operation Neptune and the security was called BIGOT, which is higher than top secret. But, as we all know, secrets can be very hard to keep. The Allies think the Germans may have learned of the plans because enemy bombs that landed in England killed the man carrying the briefcase with all the information regarding Operation Neptune. The mans body was found, but the briefcase never was. Another deception in Operation Neptune was a fake American force that was supposedly attacking France in the Pas de Calais.(Operation Fortitude) The group had fake equipment that looked real from the air and the leader was rumored to be a general who was feared by the Germans. The Allies hoped that the Germans would wait at the Pas de Calais instead of sending reinforcements to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

Der Fuhrer and the Aryan Race Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th, 1889 in Austria. When he was three, his family moved to Germany and as an adult, he moved to Vienna. In Hitler’s early adulthood, his mother died of breast cancer and he was forced to live in homeless shelters. At the time he lived in Vienna, it was full of religious prejudice and racism. Hitler read newspapers such as Deutsches Volksblatt that talked about “Christian fears of being swamped by an influx of eastern Jews” (wikipedia) Hitler volunteered to serve in the Bavarian Army at the out break of WWI. He was a decorated soldier by the end of the war with seven awards. In 1919, Hitler joined a political party called the German Workers Party and soon after, he won the support of the members. Two years

later, he became the leader of the Party and designed the swastica. The party was known as the Nazi Party. Hitler promised if he became leader he would bring back Germany to greatness. He was elected as chancellor of Germany in 1933. In his Book, Mein Kampf or my struggle he talks about racism and his violent views. He also talked about turning Germany into a society based upon race and some of the passages suggested genocide. Hitler believed in what he called an aryan “master race” and that his race must remain pure in order to take over the world. Hitler’s idea of the ideal Aryan was blond hair, blue eyes and of Northern European descent.

WHATS HOT AND WHATS NOT IN THE 1940S -Hot: Gloves. Gloves are always good thing to wear but when the gloves don’t match your outfit, well thats a BIG... -Not: Gloves that don’t match your outfit. If you wear gloves that don’t match the outfit, you can be at risk of ruining the entire outfit. -Hot: Bright clothes. Any bright colors are great. The brighter the better! -Not: Because war is a serious time, not showing a serious or respectful attitude is not good. Rationing was strict so you must make do with what you have and recycle old clothing to make dresses -Hot: Silly Putty. Silly putty is so popular right now and is extremely useful. It can be a fun toy for kids but also be used by adults to hang pictures, fix wobbly furniture, and so much more! The crazy thing is, it was invented by accident by James Wright!
