WELCOME

Dear Friends,

I am excited to announce that the MJCC has completed a new strategic plan to guide our growth in the next few years! This new plan places special emphasis on six strategic priorities:

1. Revitalize and reimagine camp.

2. Invest in a significant expansion of our portfolio of youth programs, including after school enrichment, aquatics, and sports.

3. Strengthen the “pipelines” for young families into the JCC (including PJA families, PJ Library, and more).

4. Launch a “signature” outreach or event series that increases the JCC’s profile, importance and relevance in the Jewish community (and especially beyond its own campus).

5. Develop our board to more effectively carry out its governance and philanthropy work.

6. Refresh the fitness offerings in ways that accentuate our positioning as a welcoming and inviting wellness community.

Of particular note is that four of these six priorities are focused on enhancing our service to youth and young families, and implementation efforts are already underway. Our 2023 Summer Day Camp has greater capacity and new options for older campers, CIT’s, and those looking for specialty camps. Camp registration is now open (see page 13), and we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment. We’ve also expanded our spring afterschool program offerings to meet the range of interests of more children in our community.

We’re proud to offer PJ Library to families in the Portland metro area, thanks to a new partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland. We look forward to engaging PJ Library families with new programs and resources throughout the year. Don’t miss our Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) celebration on April 26 (see page 6) which will feature an array of activities for kids presented in partnership with our PJ Library partners throughout the community.

For hours, administrative office closures, and special class offerings on holiday dates, visit oregonjcc.org.

Our new “signature event” mentioned in priority #4 above is the “Day for the J!” This year, it will be held on Sunday, April 23 (see page 6), and it will feature something for everyone! Building off our successful “Walk for the J” during the past couple of years, our community can now participate in our first-ever pickleball tournament… or our racquetball tournament! Bring the family to our Sportsplex to enjoy activities for kids! Or get some exercise while supporting the J by swimming in our pool or walking laps on our playing field. Sponsorship opportunities are available, as well.

We are excited to share additional opportunities for youth and young families as we implement our new strategic plan in the coming months!

See you at the J!

SUPPORT THE MJCC!

Your support allows us to enrich lives, build community, and inspire Jewish journeys.

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is the home away from home for thousands of individuals and families in the Portland area.

As a nonprofit, we rely on gifts above and beyond membership dues. Membership, program fees and rentals account for only 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference.

Your gift of any size is needed and appreciated.

Your generous tax-deductible donation to the MJCC supports:

• New equipment in our fitness center, gymnasium and studios;

• Expanded programming for youth and young families - our key strategic priorities in our new strategic plan;

• Cultural and holiday programming that puts the “Jewish” in MJCC;

• Need-based financial assistance for membership and Day Camp to ensure that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay; and

• Competitive salaries to retain staff and trainers that are the face of the JCC.

Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged - to be an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.

Ways to support the J:

• DAY FOR THE J: Pickleball, Racquetball, Swim and Walk for the J. You can participate or sponsor an athlete. More info at oregonjcc.org/DayfortheJ;

• Donate $360 or more to the J’s Annual Campaign and become a member of “The Friends of the Center Society.” Members receive invitations to exclusive events and programs throughout the year;

• Donate appreciated stock or a minimum retirement distribution and avoid capital gains tax (please discuss with your tax professional);

• Become a Sustaining Member for $1800/year (tax deduction depends on your membership cost);

• Add a monthly donation to your membership; and

• Join the MJCC Legacy Society. You can support the JCC with an afterlife gift from your will, trust, retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy.

Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Donate at oregonjcc.org/donate.

For more information about how you can support the J, please contact Saul Korin, Director of Donor Engagement + Philanthropy at skorin@oregonjcc.org or at 503.452.3427.

MJCC INFO

Statement of Non-Discrimination

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC) assures that no person shall be discriminated against because of race, color, creed, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, religion, political affiliation, veteran status, physical, sensory or mental disability, familial status, or any other reasons protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. No person shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity for which they are otherwise eligible.

JCCA Membership Perk

As a member of JCCA, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center enjoys many perks. One perk is mutual reciprocation with membership at other JCCA member facilities. The MJCC welcomes all out-oftown JCC members for a maximum of 14 non-consecutive days per calendar year. After 14 days, we have a special offer of $12 per day per person. Members of the MJCC will enjoy reciprocal membership at other JCCA facilities according to that location’s specific policy. Make sure to bring your member ID card!

connected with the J!

Sign up for email alerts from the programs you use the most, as well as our weekly What’s Happening email blast at oregonjcc.org/newsletters.

Cancellation Policy

A full refund will be given when the MJCC cancels a program. A full refund will also be given if a participant requests to drop a class (excluding MJCC camps) with at least 24 hours before the first class. The MJCC reserves the right to cancel, change, or combine programs at any time.

Enrollment FAQs

• You may register online or in person at the Welcome Desk.

• Payment must be provided at time of registration to guarantee a spot.

• If participants miss a class, they are not allowed to drop into other classes. If a class or program is cancelled due to inclement weather or other cause, we are unable to schedule make-up sessions or provide refunds.

Accommodating Waitlists

All programs operate with minimum enrollment requirements and maximum enrollment capacities. We reserve the right to cancel, change, or combine programs when minimum program enrollments have not been met. Once a program is filled, a waitlist will be created. You will be called if an opening becomes available or if additional classes are created. Waitlists are accommodated first come, first serve. Note: If additional classes are created, they may not be at the same time or day as the original program.

Inclement Weather and Building Closures

If a class or program is cancelled due to inclement weather or other cause, we are unable to schedule make-up sessions or provide refunds if requested during the current program guide session.
