PRESIDENT’S PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MESSAGE

JACKIE CARDENAS | PRESIDENT

HI-YA BELLFLOWER KEY CLUBBERS! IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW ME, MY NAME IS JACKIE CARDENAS AND I PROUDLY SERVE YOU ALL AS YOUR BELLFLOWER KEY CLUB PRESIDENT FOR THE 2018-2019 TERM! <3 ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN BELLFLOWER KEY CLUB PRESIDENT FOR A LITTLE OVER 7 MONTHS NOW, I AM SO EXCITED TO CONTINUE BRINGING YOU ALL NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW AS A LEADER AND HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY. AS KEY CLUB PRESIDENT, IT IS MY JOB AND DUTY TO PLAN, ORGANIZE, AND CARRY OUT RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH MY ROLE AS THE CLUB'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER. SOME OF THESE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE PLANNING MEETINGS, CONTINUOUSLY MONITORING OUR CLUB'S PROGRESS TOWARD OUR CLUB'S GOALS AND PRESIDING OVER OUR KEY CLUB AGENDA-- THAT IS THE EVENTS, BOTH SERVICE AND SOCIAL, WE DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE IN AND LASTLY, PREPARING AND ENCOURAGING THIS YEAR'S UNDERCLASSMEN TO RUN FOR NEXT YEAR'S KEY CLUB ELECTIONS. ALTHOUGH THE HEAVY WORKLOAD THAT COMES WITH BEING PRESIDENT IS DAUNTING AT TIMES, NOTHING BEATS KNOWING THAT MY WORK AS PRESIDENT IS BENEFITING SOMEONE IN OUR COMMUNITY. AS PRESIDENT, I HOPE TO INCREASE EVERYONE'S ATTENTION TO NOT ONLY OUR CLUB BUT TO THE DIVISION 13 SOUTH NINJAS, THE CALI-NEV-HA DISTRICT, AND KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL. I HOPE THROUGH MY LEADERSHIP, EVERYONE GAINS A BETTER WIDESPREAD UNDERSTANDING OF KEY CLUB AND OUR MISSION. OUTSIDE OF KEY CLUB, I'M YOUR AVERAGE SENIOR THAT ALSO HAPPENS TO BE EXTREMELY ACTIVE IN SCHOOL CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES AND EXTREMELY DEDICATED TO MY ACADEMIC STUDIES. EARLY ON IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS ACCEPTED INTO THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE AND THE CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION, AND HAVE SINCE THEN COMPLETED VARIOUS AP, HONORS, AND COLLEGE COURSES. DURING MY JUNIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL, I JOINED ASB AND SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF SPANISH CLUB, AND SECRETARY OF CSF. MY DREAMS ARE TO ATTEND NEW YORK UNIVERSITY FOR MY BACHELORS, MASTERS, AND A DOCTORATE DEGREE IN VIROLOGY STUDIES, AND HOPEFULLY ONE DAY BECOME AN ANESTHESIOLOGIST AND VIROLOGIST. I HAVE BEEN IN KEY CLUB FOR 3 YEARS. LIKE THE MAJORITY OF OTHER KEY CLUBBERS, I JOINED KEY CLUB MY SOPHOMORE YEAR FOR THE MAIN PURPOSE OF VOLUNTEER HOURS AND HOW GOOD IT WOULD LOOK ON COLLEGE APPLICATIONS. IN ADDITION, I SAW KEY CLUB AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH MY FRIENDS THAT WENT TO OTHER SCHOOLS BESIDES BELLFLOWER! AS I ATTENDED MORE EVENTS, I FOUND MYSELF FALLING IN LOVE WITH SERVICE AND MEETING NEW PEOPLE. THROUGH KEY CLUB, I LEARNED HOW TO BETTER DEVELOP MYSELF AS A LEADER AND A FRIEND. I LEARNED THAT SERVICE DOESN'T JUST MEAN VOLUNTEERING FOR AN ORGANIZATION; IT MEANS CARING FOR YOUR COMMUNITY. TO SERVE IS TO HELP OTHERS PASSIONATELY FOR THE SAKE OF HELPING AND FOR NO OTHER BENEFIT. I HOPE THAT I CONTINUE TO SEE ALL OF YOU REMAIN ACTIVE IN THIS TRULY AMAZING CLUB. I KNOW THAT KEY CLUB TRULY CHANGED MY HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE FOR THE BETTER AND I HOPE THAT FOR YOU, IT'LL DO THE SAME. REMEMBER TO BE KIND TO EACH OTHER AND NEVER LET GO OF YOUR KEY CLUB SPIRIT. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT ME OR MY JOB, FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME! IF YOU EVER SEE ME AROUND, DON'T BE AFRAID TO JUST GO UP AND SAY HI! I LOVE YOU ALL <3

EVENT EVENT RECAP RECAP RTC SPIRIT SESSIONS In preparation for Region Training Conference 2018, our division held several spirit sessions. Our ninjas learned many different cheers and painted posters for RTC. Our division was ready to win the spirit stick!

AVATARTC Region Training Conference is an annual event where each region holds a conference for key clubbers to learn more about Key Club. RTC 2018 was Avatar themed! At RTC, Key Clubbers from Divisions 13 North, 13 South, 13 West, 19 North, and 19 South got to meet each other and make new friends! Key Clubbers also partook in several workshops on leadership, Key Club 101, officer duties, and much more! After that, the 5 divisions of Region 8 had a huge spirit battle, with the result of our division winning the spirit stick!

EVENT EVENT TACKLE WORLD HUNGER WEEKEND Bellflower Key Club participated in the Tackle World Hunger Weekend service event that occurred on October 6, 2018. At this event, one of our members helped package meals to distribute to children in communities who struggle with hunger.

BARNAFEST 2018 Greetings Key Clubbers! Without a doubt, this past month has been a blast. With a vast number of service projects to keep our Ninja spirit going, Bellflower Key Club definitely made our presence known at the Barnafest, a weekend-long event that took place on Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th at the St. Barnabus Church in Long Beach, CA. Although there was a lot that needed to be done, our Key Clubbers had no problem lending a helping hand at the tasks that followed. Some were split up to assist with the various booths that were up and running, all ranging from food booths to game booths, and others were asked to pick up any trash that may have been left behind. When the festival was over, many of our members made sure to stay behind and help roll up banners and fold up tents and canopies that were used during the event. Bellflower Key Club was proud to have served at such an amazing event and hopefully, we come back to help next year!

HISTORICAL CEMETERY TOUR HI-YA Key Clubbers! On Saturday, October 27th, Bellflower Key Club made sure to participate in the Historical Cemetery Tour division event that was hosted by none other than the Historical Society of Long Beach. There, Bellflower Key Clubbers made sure to aid the Historical Society of Long Beach in setting up tables and spreading out yard signs. When the event was over, as a courtesy, we made sure to stay a little bit afterward to help pick up chairs, folding tables, retrieve yard signs, and leave the cemetery in the condition we found it in. We can't wait to help out again next year!

8

RECAP RECAP TRICK OR TREAT ON THE BOO!-LEVARD Our club also participated in the Trick-or-Treat on the BOO!-levard service event on October 26, where our Key Clubbers helped young trick-or-treaters safely cross the streets as they trick-or-treated down Bellflower Boulevard. Moreover, our members also helped pick up trash and maintain the cleanliness of the town center plaza at the Halloween Carnival that followed the trick-or-treating event. Several of our members also assisted with the train ride offered at the carnival.

OTIS REID MEMORIAL TREE PLANTING Bellflower Key Clubbers also volunteered at an environmentally-friendly event for the month of October: the Otis Reid Memorial Tree Planting. Occurring on a Saturday morning on October 20, our members arrived early to assist in planting several trees in a Long Beach neighborhood in honor of the late Otis Reid as a part of Long Beach’s project called “I Dig Long Beach- 6,000 Trees by 2020.”

EVENT EVENT RECAP RECAP OCTOBER DCM With Fall Rally South around the corner, D13S had a whopping amount of 86 members go to the October division council meeting. Everyone arrived with creative, unique, and spoo-KEY costumes. After individual home-club roll call, the division judging committee announced multiple awards, such as Key Clubber of the Month. After that, we played multiple ice-breakers, such as the all-time favorite, “Poncho.” Keeping the theme and tradition, we split into teams and “mummified” our chosen team member with toilet paper within a 3-minute time span. Luckily, the Bellflower team won the game. The meeting proceeded with a spirit session, a time for members to learn and practice the three Fall Rally cheers. All in all, the DCM was a success and the members had a lot of fun and got to know more about Key Club. DCMs are a great way to get more involved and meet new friends. We highly encourage you to join us this month and see for yourself!

BELLFLOWER KIWANIS SWIM MEET On October 28, our club participated in the Bellflower Kiwanis Swim Meet, a division event hosted by our Kiwanis Club sponsor, the Kiwanis Club of Bellflower. At the swim meet, our members were able to assist in setting up the event and in keeping everything in order. Our members helped w/ the scoring table, cheered on swimmers, assisted swimmers in the water, prepared food for the athletes, and assisted w/ cleaning up after the event.
