We started Big Agnes eighteen years ago without a real plan, but with a pretty good idea: to make the best gear possible to help folks like you get outside and chase your dreams. Respected industry vets told us we were crazy. The camping gear market was ‘too saturated’, they said… We were driven to make better gear and be part of some really cool adventures, so we kept at it. The Big Agnes System, our original concept of affixing a sleeping pad and bag in a simple way, was born and everything evolved from there. We believe that innovation is born from real-world product testing, and that gear should be pushed to its limits. The photos, product reviews, stories and crazy adventures you share from all over the world are what keep us motivated. You’re using our gear exactly as intended…hard, often and in ways we never imagined. In just the past year our gear has been all over the globe with our staff, ambassadors, expeditions and you guys. This year has seen Big Agnes on a bikepacking trip to the Pakistani Himalaya, staff camping trips all over the Western states, and climbing expeditions to Everest and Cho Oyo. You’d find our gear packed and re-packed night after night on thru-hikes of all the major trails, on trips to high alpine lakes that nearly guarantee fish, blasted with dust on adventure moto trips across remote deserts and tested by kids and dogs (the toughest of all users) on countless overnights to our favorite group site up North. ta l

Big Agnes is different than other gear companies. We’re based in a ski town in northwestern Colorado. Our backyard is outdoor paradise, and our testing grounds are within sight of our office. The Continental Divide Trail is home to some of our favorite trails for skiing, hiking and mountain biking; the Mount Zirkel Wilderness beckons us with its high alpine summits. The Yampa River flows a stone’s throw from our office, and on most lunch hours the office is quiet enough to hear a pin drop while we’re out finding n fresh air or fresh tracks of one kind or another. Big Agnes Mountai ss rne lde Wi l All these years later, we feel like we have stayed on course. And you know what? We Mt. Zirke feel like the luckiest company every day. A huge part of that is because of you – so keep Rabbit Ears Pass on sharing with us what you’re doing and where you’re doing it. And to those naysayers from our past, we say, “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.” - The Crew at Big Agnes

Heat stroke in the Arctic is not a usual concern, yet this clouds my thoughts as I lie in our tent dreaming of shade. The relentless 24-hour sun has given us little respite while cycling the remote and rugged gravel of Canada’s Dempster Highway. Sitting up to catch a slight breeze and retrieve a water bottle, my gaze shifts to the kids who are sprawled, red-faced and lethargic beside me. “I wish there were some clouds,” mutters eight-year-old Ava Fei. Uncertain endeavors, like biking for months as a family, create challenges and rewards beyond anything dreamt in the comforts of home. During the planning stages of this 7,000-mile bikepacking adventure, I reserved concerns about heat, lack of water, and flat tires for the distant southern end of our trip in Baja, Mexico. Yet far above the Arctic Circle on Canada’s most northerly road we are experiencing all of these in abundance, plus bugs. It is the bugs that have us locked in the tent on this sultry summer day. Our first three days of riding from Lnuvik have been hard, and we are all tired. Our bodies have yet to adjust to the rigors of traveling by bike, and our minds have yet to adjust to the intensity of the wilderness. It is luxury to rest in the tent, reading and drawing amid the whine of mosquitos around us.

Simple as it is, we are secure and happy in our 57-square feet of living space. Yet each day is an adventure in the wilderness. Within an hour, clouds have crept across the Continental Divide and blotted out the sun. At first we luxuriate in the coolness. Soon the temperature plummets and we put on layers. But we are all caught off guard when thunder booms overhead. The interminable heat is suddenly replaced by a blast of wind that pushes over the bikes and tears at the fly. Our campsite lacks any significant shelter and soon the wind is pulling up the corners of the tent. Alice and I do our best to calm the kids, speaking loudly over the din of rain pelting nylon. We each sit in a corner to weigh down the tent, bums creating hollows as the ground liquefies beneath the tent. As the initial shock of the storm dissipates, we realize that we are not going to blow away and that we are still safe and secure. Smiles replace tears. Koby recalls another rainstorm from an earlier trip. We all laugh when Alice says, “I guess we don’t have to cook dinner.” Humor returns, like warm blood to cold fingers, and we sit out the remainder of the storm telling stories and discussing favorite ice cream flavors. Even without supper, we have everything we need. Our family of four sits huddled in our tent in a distant land where we are utterly alone, yet undeniably together.

Some days were wetter than others, but most involved varying degrees of precipitation–and even worse–headwinds. I’d been pedaling my bike for a month and a half, starting in January from Vancouver, BC. My goal was to catch a steelhead in WA, OR, and CA, but so far nearly every river I pedaled over was high and muddy; unfishable due to the ridiculous amounts of rain the Pacific Coast was receiving. After hunkering down in a cheap motel for two days in Gold Beach, OR, I mustered up some courage and continued south - into the wind and rain. I made it two blocks before taking shelter in a grocery store. Bacon maple bars and fried chicken were a consolation. Eventually the squall passed, and I saddled up long enough to make it to the next town. The rain even stopped as I set up my tent, ate the rest of the fried chicken, and laid a Franz fruit pie next to my pillow in anticipation of dessert. Excited by the lack of rain, I decided to treat myself to dinner out, and headed into town to hit up the local pub for a tankard and crab sandwich. With a full belly and sore legs, I cruised back to my campsite, unzipped the vestibule and threw panniers into the tent. At the same time, a small furry creature hopped out of my tent door and sauntered a few feet away. I was preparing some choice remarks for what I thought was a lap dog, and flicked on my headlamp. Right about then, it lifted its bushy tail and

took aim. It took a second to recognize a faint white stripe of a skunk in the dim beam of my headlamp. At the sight of its tail, I turned mine and ran. To my surprise and great relief, the creature decided not to retaliate, and simply wandered into the bushes. I prepared for the worst, expecting to find a shredded tent full of what once was a down sleeping bag and my few worldly positions. Holding my breath, I peeked inside. It seemed I had interrupted the skunk in the middle of its second course. After polishing off the chicken bones and all associated crumbs, it moved on to my fruit pie dessert, neatly opening the wrapper and eating it smartly from end to end, much as I had intended. Not only did this particular skunk show mercy with its anal scent glands, but also with its table manners. There was hardly a crumb on the tent floor, and none of my possessions were touched. Well met skunk of good taste! In the 1,700 miles from one border to the other, there were a lot of close calls: narrow roads with speeding cars, wind gusts that pushed me into the ditch, and those agonizing moments with elusive winter steelhead. Perhaps none were quite as potentially disastrous as woodland creatures with an acquired taste for fruit pies.

TRAIL WEIGHT VS. PACKED WEIGHT All published weights in our catalog and website are “trail weights”: The weight of the tent with the tent components necessary for set up. Packed weight is the VISIT BIGAGNES.COM FORweight COMPLETE PRODUCT DETAILS with everything included with purchase.

DAC makes their poles from a proprietary aluminum alloy that allows them to build thin walled tent poles with a high strength to weight ratio. Pressfit™ connectors eliminate the main causes of tent pole failure and Reverse Combi™ architecture allows for wider head room without adding extra poles. DAC eliminates the chemical polishing stage and reduces the need for these two hazardous chemicals, resulting in safer manufacturing conditions. DAC also recycles wastewater which reduces water use and creates significantly less wastewater. 35

It had been over a month in southern Arizona. We were floating desert rivers, tweezing cactus spines from inflamed feet, and hiding behind saguaros from the unrelenting meatball in the sky. One ridiculously sunny morning, the stifling heat led us to an important decision: we were escaping to the ocean. Headed to kayak on the sea Jacques Cousteau called “the world’s aquarium”, we crossed the border in our own vehicle, immediately disoriented by the beautiful, crazy chaos that just doesn’t exist a couple of miles north. An hour into it we were hassled, hugged, and in pursuit of the most magnificent al pastor tacos–which we found. This place was sweet. After two days bumping along rugged roads that would eventually demise the trusty Astro Van’s shock absorbers, we discovered a perfect basecamp down a hidden, rocky path. I decorated our “bedroom” with the snuggle bag and some LED night lights, and we bouldered on a rocky, overhanging cliff for sunset. This was a place dreams were made of, and we did what anyone would do in this magical natural environment—disrobed, frolicked around our private playground, and drifted asleep to the music of the ocean. I awoke abruptly that night, peering into headlights beaming over us, as if an UFO had just landed. I shook Braden to life, and we laid there for a moment, surveying the environment. The silhouette of a body paced briskly before our eyes, whispered to someone we couldn’t see, and held what appeared to be a knife in their hand. Braden emerged slowly from our sleeping bag, and tiptoed toward the dark figure. I stayed behind, prepared to provide backup with a piece of driftwood in my hand. Braden approached, and the figure seemed startled. But shortly after, a human face manifested; and most importantly, a smile. Turned out, it was midnight, and an elderly Mexican farmer and his

62

BAJA

son had just acquired a flat tire way out here in the middle of No-Man’s-Beach-Land. One floppy tire, no wrench, no food or water. Luckily, we had tools. One look at those lug nuts, rusty and disintegrated from decades of salty air, and the prediction was they weren’t coming off. Ever. However, in the light of a seemingly impossible circumstance, this stubborn old man was not giving up easily. He handled the wrench in ways I never would have dreamed—a hammer, a screwdriver, a saw. Eventually, he opted for a Plan B. It was a strange dream sitting in camp chairs, waves crashing behind us, observing this young Mexican boy rally and fishtail his truck around on the beach like it was in the Baja 500, in an attempt to break some lug nuts off a wheel. His father watched with pride, hooting, “MORE GAS! THE TIRE IS COMING OFF!” At 4 a.m., I noticed the old man was profusely sweating from all this hard work. I slathered some PB&J on tortillas, and offered them a platter along with a gallon of water. The two demolished their snacks quickly. They were mesmerized by this delicious discovery, and inquired for the recipe. My second wind was beginning to wear off as another truck donut torpedoed the tire off the wheel frame. The old farmer replaced the floppy tire with a new one, and then, rather anticlimactically, the old truck rumbled off into the distance. The sun was rising, and we figured it was time to go to bed. Again. The Sea of Cortez kayaking trip lasted over a month. A completely different beach and landscape by the mile, we poked through canyons with million-year old fossils in the walls, performed puppet shows with mysterious, washed up skeletons, and swam through shady sea caves. It was only when we returned stateside and were cleaning out the van a month later that we rediscovered the souvenir that served as a fabulously strange good omen—a twisted, broken tire wrench.

The Uinta’s and I have a notoriously tumultuous relationship. I can’t think of a single backpacking trip or day hike I’ve taken without nearly getting zapped by lightning, having to turn around, or wait out a storm. Working my way up the valley, the Unita’s started to show off her sexy ridgelines. Fall colors were emerging, the grass taking on a soothing shade of gold, deer grazing in the weaving meadows, creeks pushing the last bit of water through, and high clouds contrasted the stunning shade of alpine sky blue. You’re always guaranteed a lateday storm in this range, but today had stayed surprisingly tame and my optimism of avoiding a storm was high. I finally made it to my destination with plenty of time to explore and pick out a killer camp spot. In the distance, clouds were building in a fashion where most wouldn’t be bothered, but I know my significant other too well. I found a spot I deemed “good enough”, dropped my pack, and started clearing the ground. In that five minute cycle of activity, my distant storm began to creep overhead. I quickly grabbed my tent and laid it out, reached for my poles, and in that moment the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up - not from electricity in the air, but from the sensation in my hand… “These poles feel awfully big for a single-man tent.” Before I even had them assembled, I realized in my frenzy of packing I had grabbed the poles for my three-man. Shoot. “It’s all good, I have the rain fly, just need to guy it out and I’ll be fine.” Shoot, no trekking poles. “Ok, just need to find some good trees instead.” Like a sadistic game of Tetris, I couldn’t find the right combination. Either my lines were too short or the trees weren’t far enough apart. “Wow, really wish I had the extra chord I told myself I didn’t need.” I started rummaging through my pack grabbing anything that could work as extra line. Camera strap, my necklace, shoelaces... Then it happened—that first loud crash of thunder, change in the wind, and the smell of chaos overhead. Like a switch, it went from three to ten and now it was time to just make anything work. I found a log large enough that would allow for a sad version of a Boy Scout tent and wedged it between two trees. The most important thing was to not get my gear wet and whatever combination of straps and wood I needed to use, it had to happen now—fast. My concoction looked like Picasso set up a tent. A corner here, tied off over there, tightened over this, wedged under there… I laid out the tent body as a floor, inflated my pad, and crawled into my little cave. I leaned back on the tree in a moment of victory. CRASH! BOOM! KAPOW! The Uinta’s were laughing. What I thought was a standard thunderstorm reared its ugly head: This was a micro-burst, and it was time to hang on. My fly was stretched in all directions, the wind drowning out the rain, the flapping deafening me. I swiveled around in my shelter patching up leaks, tightening my sad excuse for straps, and gathering my gear as close to me as I could. I’ve never heard thunder this loud. The lightning was blinding. The rain, relentless. All the factors that lead to this moment collided into one comical realization - this was all my fault and there’s something incredibly awesome about it. My hurried pack job, deciding to leave my trekking poles behind, thinking I would be fine for two nights without my standard kit, all lead to this moment. Years of seamless adventures grew a confidence that finally outgrew my logic, and honestly, I was due for a bit of a beat down. Mistakes are necessary to grow as an outdoorsman and you can easily bet I’ll never leave my poles, tape, or cord behind again. Oh, and I’ll bring the right damn tent poles, obviously.

BIG AGNES IS COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is something everyone is talking about these days. To us, sustainability starts with our staff and our ability to maintain our small company in a mountain town like Steamboat Springs. We make camping gear and getting that gear out there into the places we love is one of our priorities. From here, we know we are in a good place to encourage others to do the same, to pay attention to the land we call our backyard, and to apply the lessons we learn there to our business sense. We also realize our impact is greater than just the decisions we are making in the design and manufacturing processes, so we’ve partnered with a number of non-profit organizations (shown below) that are looking at the bigger picture. As a business and a bunch of mountain loving folk, Big Agnes is committed.
