When CDTA closed Bryan Martin, Kerry Shakarjian and Josh Shusko and myself, Teresa Martinez, all previous employees and colleagues at CDTA, realized we couldn’t let the grassroots effort to support the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) fall on our watch. So together we formed CDTC. The goal was to bring together the grassroots community who cared not only about the CDT but believed in creating an organization that could support the CDT in perpetuity. On June 14, 2012 CDTC incorporated and launched with $4 from Josh Shusko’s dining room table. At CDTC, we are blessed to work with such passionate and supportive companies and partners. Big Agnes is one of those companies that not only provides support, but they also roll up their sleeves and literally, dig in the dirt. In this way Big Agnes exemplifies the types of relationships we like to build with our partners—it’s not just a one-way direction or one-time event—it is a long-term relationship that brings both of our strengths to the tables and affects both parties in ways that help us be better, stronger, and grow together in a unique and special way. We have only begun to tap the creativity, passion, and innovation that each of us brings to the relationship.
Corporate partnerships provide an avenue for companies who make the gear our supporters use to play an active role in the work we do and participate in even more ways to the stewardship of our public lands. We know not every company will be like Big Agnes or some of our other partners who live close to the CDT, or where the CDT is in their literal “backyard”, but we know that every little bit of support helps us protect the CDT. We hope that all of our existing partners and potential future partners understand that we want real, meaningful relationships that help us showcase the CDT for the right reasons, and help us continue to protect this amazing landscape to maintain and create even more access to the CDT for all those who choose to experience it. Any organization or future partner can reach out to us here at CDTC. We welcome and invite you to brainstorm and get creative with us about how to align our organization’s mission and core values to support the CDT, engage more supporters into the CDT Community, and inspire continued stewardship of our public lands.

“My legs felt like deep-fried toast when we finished. I’ve never hiked in the San Juan National Forest before. The sporadic weather and transient clouds were awe inspiring giving a sense of feeling there in the mountains and somewhere else all at once. Triumph on the trail varied like our personalities--we each had crucial moments, but as a team we helped one another push through. This felt both mysterious and familiar!”

“From the gorgeous views atop Knight’s Ridge, to a night spent along the Colorado River, my first experience on the CDT was a highlight of my summer. Not only did we test new gear, we were spoiled with a great group of friends to share the adventure. Through the rain we trekked alongside a herd of moose to reach the scenic gateway town of Grand Lake, where we were rewarded with burgers and cold beers.”

“Being a part of something special and so much bigger than myself was very empowering. Conquering a mountain of self-doubt - and summiting a 13,301’ peak while wearing a 40lb pack was life changing.”

“As our hike approached, I worried I was not prepared. I had just given birth six months before and had done zero training. Our hike was beautiful as we descended Berthoud Pass, over Mt. Flora, and finally onto Rainbow Rd. The day spent laughing and exploring this section with two amazing coworkers, is unforgettable. After descending 3,000ft we knew we reached our finish when we heard Scarlet crying through the trees. ”

“After being part of Section 1 that was turned around due to wildfires, I was ecstatic to help restart the relay on Section 3. It was an extra challenge to keep everybody moving forward through a dip in moral, but thankfully, we finished our section with smiles on our faces.”

“The World’s Longest Company Meeting: I had read about it in the paper, I had talked about it in my interview, but I never thought a spot would open up for someone who hadn’t even started her first day. But, there I was--eight days on the job with my pack on my back!”

“We ran a couple miles south to the tag the NM border, then a couple miles north back to our 7-day packs, backpacked in 5 miles, when we got the message on the sat phone saying they closed San Juan National Forest due to wildfires, we have to turn around, hike back to the pass where we started, to get our ride back home. Deflated… all 5 of us walked back to jump in the car and drive back to the office.”

“That 1 billion years of tectonic grinding, sea, wind, fire would forge the spine of the Americas. That 10-15 thousand years ago humans would forge paths in those mountains, settling from Alaska to Argentina. That their trail—which tells the history of earth and humanity—would inspire a community to care for its legacy. That after thousands of humbling miles I would call that trail, these people, our 75 miles: home.”

“Stepping over the line of white rocks on the trail marking the border between Colorado and Wyoming was emotional and symbolic. The moment represented completion of a monumental project, piece of mind knowing our crew would be out of the backcountry, and satisfaction that we recognized our dream. It felt good.”
